Three-star defensive back Khalil Barnes spoke to The Clemson Insider in a follow-up interview following his visit to Death Valley on Oct. 22.

Barnes said to The Clemson Insider prior to his visit that he looked forward to meeting coach Dabo Swinney, feeling the atmosphere of Death Valley and seeing what Clemson had to offer and it seems like Clemson didn’t disappoint the safety target.

“Man, Death Valley lived up to the hype,” he said. “The crowd was in the game all day long and they love their Tigers. They also pay attention to recruiting, because I had a few fans stop and ask me for pictures and just showing love.”

Barnes also had the opportunity to connect with Swinney, as well as the coaches that have recruited him, safeties coach Mickey Conn and defensive coordinator Wesley Goodwin.

“I talked to coach Swinney before the game,” he said. “His message to me was just that he wants me to be a part of his team not only because I’m a special player, but he feels like I’m a culture fit for them. I spent a lot of time with coach Conn and coach Goodwin as well.”

It wasn’t just the coaches and staff that welcomed Barnes, but the players as well. Barnes expressed that between the interactions he had on Saturday and the environment of Death Valley, Clemson was “gonna be hard to beat.”

“The team was really cool,” he said. “All the guys showed love to recruits and after the game and even when they were down they never panicked and showed a lot of faith in each other, which is cool. They set a standard high for my next visits. Gonna be hard to beat.”

The key prospect was joined by his dad and both his high school head coach and offensive coordinator. Barnes wasn’t the only one who loved Clemson.

“My dad and my head coach Tyler Aurandt and offensive coordinator Kurt Dorehman came with me,” he said. “And, yes they loved everything about the place.”

Clemson had a thrilling, come-from-behind victory over Syracuse and Barnes just feels like that’s what Clemson does. He expressed his thoughts about the outcome of the game.

“Man, I don’t know why, I just always feel like Clemson finds a way to win,” he said. “Even when they were down, you always have a gut feeling they are going to find a way to pull it out and I’m glad they did, because it made the visit even better.”

Being a top defensive back prospect for the class of 2023, Barnes had some insights about how the defense played, fending off a talented Syracuse offense.

“Man, they kept the team in it simple,” he said. “Shout out to coach Goodwin and the staff for pitching a second half shutout.”

When he reflects on his visit, he thinks about how Clemson made history and there was just so much hype surrounding the team in that moment.

“It would’ve probably been the locker room environment after just seeing how hype it was to see history being made,” he said.

Four-star defensive lineman Kayden McDonald is coming to Death Valley this weekend ahead of his highly anticipated college decision announcement expected on Monday, Oct. 31.  This weekend’s visit will be closing time for the Tigers.

McDonald, who’s from North Gwinnett (Suwanee, Ga.) High School, spoke to The Clemson Insider and detailed expectations about this visit and how close he is to a commitment.

“I’m close to a decision,” McDonald told The Clemson Insider.

The defensive lineman expressed what he looks forward to the most this Saturday, as Clemson hosts an undefeated, confident Syracuse team in Death Valley.

“The atmosphere, the players and talking with coach Swinney and the staff,” he said. “The atmosphere with the students around, the locker room culture and see if it’s a family atmosphere with the staff.”

With Clemson in his top five schools, alongside the likes of Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma and Ohio State, McDonald shared what makes Clemson a stand out program to him.

“Close to home,” he said. “The academic’s Paw Journey and Championship Program.”

He was candid with his prediction for how he believes Syracuse will match up against the Tigers in Memorial Stadium.

As for a score prediction of the highly anticipated game in Death Valley, McDonald said, “41-17.”

McDonald, who is the No. 8 defensive tackle in his class, also had a prediction for what he expects from Clemson’s defensive line this Saturday.

“To play fast and stop the run,” he said.

Since Clemson extended the offer to McDonald in May the Tigers have been one of his top schools.  He recently included Clemson among his top five schools.

With a college decision on the horizon for McDonald, he shared which coach he’s most excited to meet during his time in Death Valley.

“I’ve never met Coach Swinney, so I wanna meet him,” he said.

Clemson lands four-star defensive lineman prospect

Clemson just landed a massive four-star commitment who is close to becoming a five-star prospect.

Clemson has landed its 11th commitment to its 2023 class, and it’s a priority addition for the Tigers.

Announcing his decision on Wednesday, four-star defensive lineman Vic Burley will attend Clemson. He chose the Tigers over his three other finalists: Georgia, Michigan State and Tennessee.

Ranked by 247Sports Composite as the No. 4 defensive lineman and the No. 40 overall recruit, Burley is 6-foot-5 and 276 pounds. Playing for Warner Robins High School in Warner Robins, Ga., he finished his junior season in 2021 with 54 tackles (14 for loss), five sacks and one forced fumble.

Although five-star quarterback commit Christopher Vizzina edges him out, Burley is the second-highest graded prospect in Clemson’s 2023 class with a .9816 247Sports Composite score.

The Tigers previously had 11 commitments on Tuesday, but four-star wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph decommitted, bringing the number back to 10 before Burley’s announcement on Wednesday.
