Trevor Bauer rips MLB for latest postponed game: ‘Figure it the f*** out’

After Reds-Tigers already had their game time moved, the game was postponed after pitchers warmed up, and Bauer was furious.

The Cincinnati Reds were scheduled to take on the Detroit Tigers on Saturday evening, but with rain in the forecast, they moved the game to earlier in the afternoon to try and get it in. Then, just minutes before the first pitch, the game was delayed due to rain, and then later postponed.

Players weren’t happy, as they went through full warmups — with pitchers getting their arms loose — before the rain started at 1 p.m., and the tarp rolled out just ten minutes before the scheduled 1:10 first pitch. Rain came down violently for the next hour, and at 2:05 p.m. the game was postponed.

Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer was especially livid, and took to Twitter to express his anger, tagging MLB in the second tweet:

MLB has already dealt with a rash of postponements due to positive COVID-19 tests for teams, and with no fans in attendance, clearly doing all they can to try and get these games in — thus moving the first pitch of this game up five hours to try and beat the rain, then not rolling out the tarp until ten minutes before the rescheduled start of the game.

It’s understandable what they’re doing, but that doesn’t help the teams’ pitchers who now arguably have to rest their arms a few days of an already shortened season.

Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Chicago Cubs (3-1) play the Cincinnati Reds (1-3) in the second game of a four-game series Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. ET at Great American Ball Park. We analyze the Cubs-Reds betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Cubs at Reds: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Alec Mills vs. RHP Tyler Mahle

Mills got into the rotation due to SP José Quintana slicing his thumb on broken glass while washing dishes.

He is 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA through six career starts and 19 total appearances. He has struck out 69 hitters over 57 1/3 innings pitched.

Mahle (2019): 3-12 with a 5.14 ERA over 25 starts and 129 2/3 innings

  • 2019 vs. Cubs: 0-0 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts (eight strikeouts in 11 IP).

Prediction

Cubs 8, Reds 4

Moneyline (ML)

Despite their current 1-3 record, the Reds (-115) had three straight quality starts (six or more innings pitched and three or fewer earned runs) out of their first three starters. Monday, the Cubs (+105) got to SP Wade Miley early, chasing him after 1 2/3 innings pitched and five earned runs surrendered, in an 8-7 win.

Tuesday’s Reds’ starter, Mahle, fills in for regular No. 5 starter Anthony DeSclafani, who’s recovering from a shoulder injury. There’s a reason Mahle isn’t a regular starter; he has an 11-23 career record with a 4.88 ERA. Look for Cubs SS Javier Baez and LF Kyle Schwarber to find their stride—both of which have four hits in 10 at-bats against Mahle.

Also, the absence of Moustakas in the Reds lineup will make it easier for Mills, an inexperienced major league starter, to navigate. Cincinnati is ranked 22nd in batting average and has the second-most runners left on base.

BET CUBS (+105). New to sports betting? A $100 bet on the Cubs (+105) earns a profit of $105 if Chicago beats Cincinnati.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Reds (+1.5, -176) have lost three games by a combined four runs. Seven of the Cubs’ (-1.5, +145) eight wins over the Reds last year were by two-plus runs.

Since we are betting Chicago on the moneyline I lean to them here, however, I’ll PASS on the run line because of the suboptimal value.

Over/Under (O/U)

LIKE OVER 10 (-110) in Cubs-Reds. The Over has cashed in the last four Cubs road games and in the last five starts for Mahle at home.

Cincinnati is due for some runs because of all those runners left on base and their 27th ranking in BABIP (batting average on balls in play).

New to sports betting? A $55 wager on Over 10 (-110) pulls a $50 profit if the two teams combine for at least 11 runs.

Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Detroit Tigers (0-1) visit the Cincinnati Reds (1-0) Saturday at Great American Ball Park for a 5:15 p.m. ET game. We analyze the Tigers-Reds odds and lines, with MLB betting odds and picks around the matchup.

Tigers at Reds: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Ivan Nova vs. RHP Luis Castillo

Nova in 2019 for the Chicago White Sox: 11-12, 4.72 ERA in 34 starts (tied with MLB lead).

  • 2019 vs. Reds: NONE
  • Career vs. Reds: 5-7, 4.24 ERA (35 ER, 74 1/3 IP) in 12 starts.

Castillo in 2019: 15-8, 3.40 ERA in 32 starts.

Prediction

Reds 9, Tigers 2

Moneyline (ML)

The 2020 Tigers (+210) came into the COVID-altered regular season expected to be basement dwellers in the standings and looked as bad as people assumed in their 7-1 loss to the Reds on Opening Day. They finished 2019 with the worst record (47-114) in MLB by 6½ games.

The Reds (-239) came in as one of the National League sleepers and a team expected to compete for the NL Central crown. Saturday’s starter, Castillo, would be an ace on a lot of other ball clubs but the Reds rotation is stacked. The 27-year-old enters his fourth season off an impressive 2019 campaign.

We are PASSING ON THE MONEYLINE on this one because the Tigers’ payout is too small and the Reds’ price is too expensive.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Just like the Tigers were had the worst regular-season record in 2019, they were the least profitable MLB team to bet on (66-95 run line record). The Reds surprised bettors last year (81-81 run line record) but won’t sneak up on them this season hence the Reds (-1.5, -134) run line odds.

Castillo has never pitched against the Tigers, but Nova has faced the Reds. Nova has started 12 games in his career, and seven games at Cincinnati’s home ballpark.

His slash line against current Reds hitters is even less inspiring. Current Reds hitters have 155 at-bats, six home runs, 21 RBIs, and slashed .352 BA/.387 OBP/.592 slugging percentage according to http://dailybaseballdata.com/cgi-bin/index.pl.

We are more betting against the Tigers here so TAKE REDS (-1.5, -134) on the run line. New to sports betting? A $134 bet on the Reds run line earns a $100 profit if Cincinnati wins by two or more runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

Each team is bottom-10 teams in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging %. Entering 2020, the Reds lineup has hope: 3B Eugenio Suarez is coming off a 49 home run season, they picked up 2B Mike Moustakas, OF/DH Nick Castellanos and have perennial All-Star 1B Joey Votto.

I do lean Over 9.5 (-110), but the Reds had the highest Under percentage in MLB last season (61-93-8). Even if the Reds lineup is much better this season, it’s tough to see Tigers pitching in much run support here. PASS on THE TOTAL in Tigers-Reds.

Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Detroit Tigers face the Cincinnati Reds Friday with a 6:10 p.m. ET first pitch at Great American Ball Park. We analyze the Tigers-Reds odds and lines, with MLB betting advice and tips around the matchup.

Tigers at Reds: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Matthew Boyd vs. RHP Sonny Gray

Boyd: 4.56 ERA in 185 1/3 IP, 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings

  • The SO/9 figure – which came on increased velocity a year ago – was accompanied by a lot of fly balls and more than a fair share landing on the unplayable side of outfield fences. Boyd yielded 1.89 home runs per nine in 2019.
  • Boyd owns a 5.60 road ERA over his career. He was rocked in his lone career game at Great American Ball Park in 2018 and hasn’t fared well in parks considered to favor hitters.

Gray: 2.87 ERA in 175 1/3 IP

  • Gray logged his lowest season ERA since 2015, but figure on a bit of regression after benefiting from a .255 opponent batting average on balls in play and a .190 batting average with runners in scoring position.
  • The 30-year-old hurler often struggles the third time through a batting order. Look for the Cincinnati bullpen to be heavily involved in closing this one out.

Tigers at Reds: Odds, lines, picks and betting tips

Moneyline (ML)

The Reds went 75-87 in 2019, but ran into some bad cluster luck and had a runs-versus-runs allowed profile that could’ve well yielded 84 wins or so. Cincinnati improved over the offseason and was a solid preseason win-total play at 31.5 in the 60-game season.

Figure the Reds as perhaps a .540 team with a solid starter (although maybe a bit overvalued) set to take the mound. The Tigers counter with Boyd, who figures to be overlooked, but this still works out to a lean on the home nine and one with a price to leverage. TAKE THE REDS (-167).

New to sports betting? A winning $10 wager on the Reds pays out a profit of $5.99.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

A CINCINNATI -1.5 (+120) play is worth tagging to the moneyline bet as a partial-unit undercard. After 2019, the Reds should be on the right side of the ledger with the run-differential gods.

Over/Under (O/U)

Friday evening in the Queen City sets up to be a warm but relatively dry night for midsummer in Cincy. The OVER 8.5 (-110) is the lean but not with much conviction.

MLB Parlay Bet Payday: Bank on this 5-way parlay bet

Looking to cash in on MLB’s 2020 Opening Day? Bank on this 5-way parlay bet in the return of baseball.

The 2020 MLB season is here and betting odds are up at BetMGM for the Thursday and Friday Opening Day slates. At SportsbookWire, we’ve previewed all the teams, looked at all the top 2020 award contenders and made our best bets for all player props for the 60-game season. Below, we’ll look at the opening game lines and make our best picks in a 5-way parlay bet.

MLB Opening Day Parlay: Picks

New York Yankees at Washington Nationals: UNDER 7.5 (-110)

Gerrit Cole will make his Yankees debut in a marquee pitching matchup with the defending World Series champions and SP Max Scherzer.

The Yankees and Nationals ranked first and sixth, respectively, in runs scored last season, but two of the best pitchers in MLB will have the early edge over all hitters in this delayed start to the season.

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets: ATL moneyline (+115)

Reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom will get the opening start at home for the Mets after dealing with a back injury throughout summer camp.

Look for the Braves to pounce early in what’s already likely to be a shortened outing for deGrom and get to a Mets bullpen that pitched to an aggregate 4.99 ERA last season. SP Mike Soroka gets the call for the Braves.

Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds: CIN -1.5 (+110)

One of the most lopsided Opening Day matchups sees a popular NL Central darkhorse contender hosting a Tigers team widely projected to finish last in baseball. The universal designated hitter rule will help the Reds more than the Tigers in this interleague set.

Cincinnati should win this easily by two or more runs with Sonny Gray on the mound against Matthew Boyd.

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox: MIN moneyline (+105)

The hype has built around the young White Sox through the winter, spring and summer and now has them favored on Opening Day against the defending American League Central champions. Stick with the known entity in what we saw from the Twins last year instead of expecting instant results from one of 2020’s most popular long-shot bets.

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics: LAA moneyline (+120)

Conversely, we’ll take the Angels over the Athletics, who qualified for the 2019 postseason as an AL wild-card team. 3B Anthony Rendon was one of the biggest free-agent additions of the offseason and bolsters the Angels’ lineup around OF Mike Trout. OF Justin Upton and SP/DH Shohei Ohtani are also back to full health following injury-shortened 2019 campaigns. Expect the Halos to start strong this season.

MLB Opening Day Parlay: Payout

The above five picks combine for odds of +3787. A $10 bet will return a profit of $378.74 if all five legs hit correctly.

2020 MLB Futures Odds: How many games will the Cincinnati Reds win?

Looking at 2020 MLB futures odds for how many games the Cincinnati Reds will win in the 60-game MLB season.

How many games will the Cincinnati Reds win in the 60-game 2020 MLB season? We look at the Reds’ MLB futures odds, including their projected 2020 win total and Over/Under odds at BetMGM, and make our best bet.

Cincinnati Reds’ 2019 recap

The Reds went 75-87 (.463) last season, under-producing on 4.3 runs per game and 4.4 RPG allowed. Cincinnati flummoxed bettors to the tune of a -9.3% ROI when playing as an underdog. The team was nine games under .500 (24-33) in one-run games, and the offense in particular was time and again undone by shaky performances in high-leverage situations. (A midsummer stretch of 66 games – June 12-Aug. 27 – saw the Reds notch an impressive .801 OPS.) That on-base plus slugging mark was matched however, by a June-to-August spell which saw Cincinnati pitching clock a 5.20 ERA.

Cincinnati Reds’ offseason

Few, if any key losses, have been easily eclipsed by some shrewd acquisitions. Donning Reds’ threads in 2020 will be 2B Mike Moustakas, OF Nick Castellanos, OF Shogo Akiyama and RP Pedro Strop. It wasn’t a splashy shopping spree for Cincinnati GM Nick Krall, but for a team that already has some regression-bounce-back candidates the Reds did well to add some wins here and there.

Cincinnati Reds’ 2020 schedule

Cincinnati’s 60-game schedule will be two-thirds comprised of National League Central games (10 vs. each team), with the one-third balance (20 games) coming against American League Central clubs.

How many games will the Cincinnati Reds win in 2020?

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday, July 6 at 11:10 a.m. ET.

Some better baseball luck, a bounce to projected form, and a potentially soft schedule all point to better things for Cincinnati. But much of that is reflected in a win total of 32.5 games with the price shaded to the Under (-120). Take the even-money OVER (+100), but it’s a moderate-confidence play at best.

Cincinnati Reds’ World Series odds

The Reds draw a +2500 tag on winning the World Series. In the parlance of the region, the 2020 season is a five-furlong sprint on the dirt. Thus, a Cincinnati wager here is a WORTHY PLAY on the tote board.

Cincinnati Reds’ playoff odds

Cincinnati is priced at +275 to win the NL Central (A SOLID PLAY) and +1200 to take the pennant in the Senior Circuit (neutral).

Suggestion: Bracket all these plays by taking the Reds to win 33-plus games and the World Series. Last season the Reds stumbled out of the gate and finished back in the pack. But the numbers in the “Form” point to some darkhorse value.

Jarrett Freeland, Tight End (#48):

Class: Redshirt sophomore

Height: 6-7

Weight: 258 pounds

Hometown: Liburn, Georgia

High School: Parkview

Georgia Bulldogs tight end Jarrett Freeland has one of the more unique stories of any player on the University of Georgia roster. Freeland signed with Georgia baseball in 2013, but elected to pursue an MLB career after the Cincinnati Reds drafted him in the 15th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft.

Injuries and positional changes took their toll on Freeland, who was released by the Arizona Reds in late 2017. Following this, Freeland decided to return to Georgia. Freeland, who is turning 26 in June of 2020, is one of the oldest players on the Georgia roster.

Freeland has excellent size and could be utilized as a blocking tight end at some point. For now, he’s adjusting back to football and looking to help the team anyway he can.

His father, Buddy Freeland, graduated from the University of Georgia as well.

Trevor Bauer called out ESPN for ‘massive screw up’ and had the perfect response

Trevor Bauer spun a negative into a positive.

It’s easy to slip into negativity and frustration amid the coronavirus pandemic. But Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer managed to spin a negative into a positive on Saturday.

When Bauer realized ESPN accidentally leaked his phone number to the public, he decided to have fun with what he called a “massive screw up.” He announced on Twitter he was going to hold a giveaway, and he put the rules for the contest in his voicemail. Fans could call him and find out what they had to do to land his signed cleats and an autographed baseball during the 48 hours which followed his announcement on Twitter on Saturday.

Here’s a look at what he said.

We called the phone number on Sunday, but got a message from the wireless provider that the number was not available. If Bauer did indeed hold the actual giveaway, this is such a great turn of events, except for Bauer, who must have been forced to change his phone number (something pro athletes often do regularly anyway).

[vertical-gallery id=916424]

Trevor Bauer prepared for possible sign stealing by telling hitter what pitch was coming

“Here it comes, try to hit it.”

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer has been one of baseball’s more outspoken players when it comes to the Astros cheating scandal. He was among the players to accuse the Astros of using wearable buzzers to steal signs, and he’s spoken out against baseball commissioner Rob Manfred in recent weeks.

But if baseball isn’t going to find a way to eliminate sign stealing from the game, Bauer seems determined to prepare for possible cheating.

During Monday’s Cactus League game between the Reds and Dodgers, Bauer signaled his pitches to Dodgers first baseman Matt Beaty during a fourth-inning at-bat. The Reds broadcast quickly caught on to Bauer signaling the pitch with his glove — as a pitcher typically would do during between-inning warmups — and Bauer challenged Beaty to hit what was coming.

Despite intentionally giving away his pitches in advance, Bauer would get Beaty to line out to straightaway center field.

The broadcast speculated that it had something to do with the Astros cheating scandal, and Reds teammate Derek Dietrich confirmed that during an in-game interview.

Dietrich said:

“In fact, I do. Trevor and I are good friends. If you’ve followed baseball this offseason, there’s a little thing going on with sign stealing. So, Trevor’s not too fond of it, so he figured he’s gonna try something new this season. And he’s gonna start telling the batters what’s coming. And that way there’s no ifs, ands or buts about what’s going on. Just here it comes, try to hit it.”

Bauer only signaled his pitches for that one at-bat in the fourth inning, but he did put together three innings of scoreless work.
