Former UCLA Bruin Trevor Bauer set to face Yankees with Diablos Rojos del México

Trevor Bauer is facing the Yankees in an exhibition game.

A former UCLA Bruin is set to return to Major League Baseball play against the New York Yankees.

Trevor Bauer, the former Bruin and Cy Young winner in 2020 was cut from by the Los Angeles Dodgers after an investigation amidst domestic and sexual assault allegations in 2023. On Sunday, Bauer returns to play the Yankees in an exhibition game for the Diablos Rojos del México.

Bauer, who sued his accuser, as reported by FOX 11, settled their dispute in court in October of 2023. Now, he faces major league players once again for the first time since 2021.

Bauer pitched for the Bruins from 2009 to 2011 before being drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks third overall in the 2011 MLB Draft. Bauer won the National Pitcher of the Year and Golden Spikes award for the Bruins in his junior season.

The details surrounding Bauer and his situation remain grey and likely prevent the MLB team from taking a chance on the 33-year-old right-hander. Whether or not Bauer makes a return to professional ball in the United States remains to be seen.

But if Bauer is bent on returning to the MLB, a solid showing against the Yankees on Sunday could be the start of the veteran’s career revival.

Trevor Bauer immediately gave up a home run after he was sent down to the Japan minor leagues

It is NOT going well in Japan for Trevor Bauer.

Former National League Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer was eligible to return to Major League Baseball after serving the longest domestic violence suspension in the league’s history. But a complete lack of interest among big-league clubs had Bauer looking elsewhere and eventually signing with the Yokohama BayStars in Japan’s NPB.

That stint in Japan has been rough for Bauer, and it managed to get even worse this week.

After posting an 8.40 ERA in three games, the BayStars sent Bauer down to its minor-league farm team in hopes of giving Bauer an “adjustment start.” Well, it didn’t get off to the start he wanted at all.

Bauer gave up a huge home run to the first batter he faced in the game. He would end up recovering and striking out 10 batters in six innings. That home run was the only run he allowed in the outing.

Still, fans weren’t exactly upset to see Bauer’s continued struggles in Japan.

Trevor Bauer bashes MLB for suddenly cracking down on foreign substances

Trevor Bauer has already seen his spin rate decrease.

Major League Baseball announced new rules and punishments on Tuesday for any player caught using foreign substances to manipulate the baseball. An automatic ejection and 10-game paid suspension were among the punishments, and umpires will frequently check pitchers for “sticky” substances.

This crackdown stemmed from the massive increase we’ve seen in spin rate the past couple seasons, and even in the time that teams received a heads up about the new rules, spin rates have declined a bit.

The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer is among the players seeing his spin rate affected by the new rules, and, well, it’s safe to say that he isn’t happy with how the league has handled this rule implementation. (Strong language)

In a Twitter thread about Tyler Glasnow’s comments on his UCL injury on Tuesday, Bauer lashed out at MLB for a “knee jerk reaction to shifting public perception.”

He claimed that MLB lied to the players about rule changes for this season and had serious issues with the league’s decision to enact those rules two-plus months into the season.

It is important to note again that Bauer had seen increases in spin rate this season and last season. But after the crackdown, he was down 200 rpm on his four-seam fastball on Saturday compared to last season’s average. His other pitches also saw 100-plus rpm decreases, according to Baseball Savant.

So while he does make some fair points about MLB’s handling of the situation, the numbers don’t exactly help his cause.

Giants’ Mauricio Dubon mocks Trevor Bauer’s ‘sword’ celebration and the Dodgers pitcher was amused

A rivalry is reborn!

We know Trevor Bauer is totally fine with batters celebrating when they get big hits and dingers. We also know that the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher likes to stir things up from time to time.

In this case, it seems like he’s joking around, but it’s hard to tell sometimes.

Let’s break it down: the Dodgers played their rival the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, and during the Giants’ win, Mauricio Dubon hit a homer off Clayton Kershaw. When he touched home plate, Dubon sheathed an imaginary sword, which is a celebration Bauer is known for. Dubon didn’t deny it in a post-game interview:

Bauer tweeted this after:

Dubon doing the “sword” with Bauer watching and not actually pitching is still so good. We’ll see if we get more back-and-forth taunting when these two teams meet again at the end of June.

Trevor Bauer and Fernando Tatis Jr. mocked each other on Twitter over apparent sign stealing

Tatis Jr. may have stole the sign before his home run.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are quickly forming one of the most entertaining rivalries in MLB thanks to the Padres’ ultra-talented young core and the Dodgers’ perennial success.

That rivalry was in full swing on Saturday and carried over into Sunday.

This latest source of drama started when Fernando Tatis Jr. took reigning NL Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer deep in the Padres’ 5-4 loss. At the time, the homer gave San Diego the lead, and Tatis celebrated the moment accordingly. Even Bauer didn’t have any problem with Tatis’ showmanship.

But that sentiment somewhat changed when replays showed Tatis sneaking a look at the catcher’s sign before the pitch.

Tatis clearly looked down to see Will Smith’s sign. It wasn’t quite Astros-level sign stealing, but it’s still frowned upon. Once the video made rounds on Twitter, Bauer chimed in and told Tatis to simply ask for the pitch next time. After all, Bauer has been known to tell the batter the pitch for fun.

Tatis responded with an edited photo of Bauer’s face on a child in Tatis’ arms.

Yeah, Sunday’s series finale should be a fun one.

OK. Fine. Trevor Bauer made a good point about not beaning batters after they celebrate.

Bauer explained why he was ok with Fernando Tatis Jr.’s showmanship after a home run.

Cue up that old Clickhole headline. The most unlikable pitcher in Major League Baseball said something that made a lot of sense and we should all just acknowledge it.

No, you don’t have to change your overall opinion of Trevor Bauer. He enjoys being toxic. He wants to stir things up for the sake of stirring things up, while simultaneously pretending he’s fearlessly speaking some difficult truth. He’s a troll. He’s deeply unlikeable.

But when it comes to the idea that pitchers should retaliate against batters who celebrate home runs … well, he’s on the right side of it.

Our Mary Clarke brought to you the tale of Fernando Tatis Jr. going deep on Bauer last night and absolutely owning him afterward. The shenanigans continued through the game.

Afterword, Bauer …. was reasonable?

Note about Mr. Braden’s note in the Tweet above: It’s OK if your “personal preference” tells you that you don’t like a person who has questioned whether humans contribute to climate change or where Barack Obama was born. That’s reasonable. Judging people by what they do and say is how it’s supposed to work, actually.

But Bauer does have a solid view on the events of last night. It starts around the :43 mark. Here’s the heart of it:

“I like it. I think that pitchers who have that done to them and react by throwing at people or you know getting upset and hitting people or whatever, I think it’s pretty soft. If you give up a homer, a guy should celebrate it. It’s hard to hit in the big leagues. I’m all for it and I think it’s important that the game moves in that direction and we stop throwing at people because they celebrated having some success on the field.”

Bauer went on to describe his back and forth with Eric Hosmer, wherein they traded “sword celebrations” after individual successes, and explained that he thinks that’s all part of competition and should be embraced.

And, well, yes.

Baseball’s stodgy adherence to some unspoken code definitely makes the game more difficult to relate to. Because as Bauer notes, it IS incredibly difficult. Of course players should celebrate. Makes it feel more human.

About this, Bauer has a point.

About many other things, he’s just talking to rile.

Fernando Tatis Jr. mocks Trevor Bauer with hand-over-eye celebration after deep home run

The trolling here from Fernando Tatis Jr. is off the charts!

Fernando Tatis Jr. was out for blood on Saturday and delivered some top quality trolling while he was at it. On the second pitch of the Los Angeles Dodgers game against the San Diego Padres, Tatis went yard off Trevor Bauer to get things going for the visitors early.

For starters, the home run was an absolute moonshot out to left field for Tatis’ sixth of the season. With the Padres having won the first two games of the series against the Dodgers, Tatis’ home run was a great start to continuing the streak.

But his celebration after the fact is where things get fun.

While it’s not originally noticeable on the initial play, the replays of the home run clearly show that Tatis is holding a hand over his eye, a direct retort to Bauer and his spring training shenanigans.

In March, Bauer famously started pitching with one eye closed, a move he adopted for a bit of fun to start off the year.

“I figured if they can’t score off me with one eye open, it’s gonna be difficult to score off me with two eyes open,” Bauer said to reporters during spring training in March.

Tatis opted for quite the top-quality trolling of Bauer on this home run celebration, getting in the last laugh after taking the pitcher deep on just the second pitch of the game.

We don’t often see dunks this hard in baseball, but Tatis — literally and figuratively — knocked it out of the park here.

Trevor Bauer told former teammate Jose Ramirez what pitches were coming, still struck him out

Amazing.

We’re nearing the start of the 2021 MLB regular season, so these final spring training games are extra important for those fighting to make the Opening Day roster.

But for the defending National League Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer, it’s more of an opportunity to get some pitches in and enjoy the nice weather in Arizona.

We saw that play out over the weekend.

The Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, who had previously tipped his pitches to opponents and pitched with one eye closed in spring training, brought both gimmicks to the table in a matchup with his former Cleveland teammate Jose Ramirez.

Bauer signaled to Ramirez that a fastball was coming. He’d also point at his eye to let him know he had one eye closed.

And despite giving Ramirez a noted advantage in the matchup, Bauer still struck out the Cleveland third baseman on a 2-2 fastball. Bauer was especially pumped and joked around with Ramirez after the at-bat.

I must say that Bauer really needs to raise the stakes here and try that during a meaningful game. That would be something.
