Magic rookie Chuma Okeke to return Tuesday after 16-game absence

The Magic announced that Chuma Okeke will be available to play on Tuesday after missing the past 16 games due to a left knee bone bruise.

Prior to hosting the Toronto Raptors, the Orlando Magic announced that rookie Chuma Okeke will be available to play on Tuesday after missing the past 16 games due to a left knee bone bruise.

Okeke initially suffered the injury on Dec. 31 versus the Philadelphia 76ers when he tweaked his knee on a spin play. He wasย later seen hobbling off of the court back to the locker room and later said it was initially a pretty painful injury.

The return of Okeke comes just as Aaron Gordon is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks with a severe ankle sprain. Gordon suffered the injury on Sunday in Tampa versus the Raptors and was forced to leave the game in the third quarter.

“(Chuma) is going to play,” Magic head coach Steve Clifford said before the game. “He is ready. He has been through contact and stuff. He is not ready to play big minutes but we need him to be able to play, tonight it will probably be 12-14 minutes. It will be a way to ease him in.”

Okeke missed all of the 2019-20 season after suffering a torn ACL in March 2019 during the NCAA Tournament. He made his debut with the Magic this season and appeared in the first five games, averaging three points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 18.3 minutes per game.

Magic rookie Chuma Okeke committed to overcoming yet another obstacle

Okeke suffered a left knee bone bruise and is reportedly expected to miss several weeks for the Magic.

Orlando Magic forward Chuma Okeke missed the entire 2019-20 season recovering from a torn left ACL suffered in March 2019 during the NCAA Tournament. He finally returned to the court this season but is dealing with yet another injury in the same knee.

Okeke was diagnosed with a bone bruise in the same knee that is expected to sideline him for several weeks, according to one timeline. The Magic said an MRI showed all of his ligaments remained intact and that his return to play will be dependent on his response to treatment.

The 22-year-old said on Sunday that he has only been able to lift in the weight room. The news of the injury was initially tough on him but Okeke said he is committed to overcoming this obstacle.

“At first, it was tough,” Okeke said. “But then, once I knew it was just a bone bruise, it was kinda like, ‘Okay, at least it’s just that and now we’re just going to keep on working. It’s just another obstacle.'”

Okeke suffered the injury during the fourth quarter on Thursday versus the Philadelphia 76ers. He appeared to tweak his knee on a spin play and was later seen hobbling off of the court back to the locker room. He said it was initially pretty painful but that later subsided walking back to the locker room.

The 16th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft has emerged as a valuable contributor for the Magic. He carved out a spot behind Aaron Gordon in the lineup and is often among the first players off the bench each game. Through five games, Okeke is averaging three points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 18.3 minutes per game.

Without Okeke in the lineup, the Magic turned to Gary Clark off the bench Saturday in a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Okeke has given the team a strong defensive option off the bench while also managing to contribute offensively, as well.

The loss of Okeke could be a big hit to the Magic should his absence linger on for several weeks but he is committed to returning to the court stronger than ever.

Magic rookie Chuma Okeke to miss ‘several weeks’ with knee injury

Okeke suffered the injury on Thursday night in a loss to the 76ers and will miss several games as a result.

Orlando Magic rookie Chuma Okeke is reportedly expected to miss several weeks with a left knee bone bruise, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The injury to Okeke is in the same knee in which he suffered a torn ACL in March 2019 during the NCAA Tournament. The Magic announced on Friday that an MRI showed that all of his ligaments remained intact and that his return to play will be dependent on his response to treatment.

Okeke suffered the injury during the fourth quarter on Thursday versus the Philadelphia 76ers. He appeared to tweak his knee on a spin play and was later seen hobbling off of the court back to the locker room.

Okeke missed the entire 2019-20 season due to his ACL tear but has emerged as a key player in the Magic’s rotation this season.

The 16th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft is averaging three points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 18.3 minutes per game. He has carved out a spot behind Aaron Gordon in the lineup and is often among the first players off the bench each game.

The loss of Okeke figures to be a big hit to the team’s depth and will likely open the door for Gary Clark to see additional playing time. The Magic have gotten off to a 4-1 start this season and were the last unbeaten team in the NBA prior to losing on Thursday.

Orlando returns to action on Saturday vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder.

NBA predictions: Our picks for All-League teams

HoopsHype predicts all of the All-NBA squads for the 2020-21 season, including the All-Defense and All-Rookie honorees as well.

As we get closer and closer to the upcoming 2020-21 season, HoopsHype decided to make predictions for the All-NBA squads โ€“ including rookies and defensive players.

As the league does it, for each group, HoopsHype writers were allowed to pick one big man, two forwards and two guards. These were the results:

Chuma Okeke realized he was in the NBA once he saw his Magic jersey

Okeke finally felt like an NBA player once he saw his jersey in the locker room prior to the Magic’s preseason opener on Friday.

Chuma Okeke spent much of the 2019-20 season around the Orlando Magic team facility rehabbing from an ACL tear suffered in March 2019 but it wasn’t until Friday night that he finally felt like an NBA player.

Okeke made his long-awaited Magic debut almost two years after suffering a major knee injury in the NCAA Tournament with the Auburn Tigers. The game on Friday marked the end of painstaking work to get back out onto the court, an experience he cherished.

“It felt really good out there, especially with it being my first time on the court in a long, long time,” Okeke said on a Zoom call with reporters after the game. “It was very fun. I just gotta keep working to be where I want to be at but my first NBA experience was really fun.”

Okeke recorded nine points, three rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot in 14 minutes off the bench in a 116-112 win over the Atlanta Hawks. He shot 3-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range, in the Magic’s preseason opener.

Magic head coach Steve Clifford said after the game that he thought Okeke and fellow rookie Cole Anthony did some good things on the court in their first game. Okeke said he knew there are several adjustments that need to be made but just overall enjoyed his first game.

After such a long delay, Okeke finally felt like an NBA player prior to the game.

“I realized it when I was sitting down on the bench,” Okeke said. “It was like, ‘Dang, I’m really here.’ I really noticed it when I first picked up my jersey in the locker room like, ‘Dang, this is really my jersey.’ It was a good experience and, hopefully, I can just build from here.”

The preseason will serve as a great opportunity for Okeke to get a taste of the speed of the NBA ahead of the regular-season opener on Dec. 23. The Magic believe he can impact games on both ends of the floor and certainly have high hopes for him this season.

Orlando returns to action on Sunday versus the Hawks at 5 p.m. EST.

Chuma Okeke admittedly was ‘very nervous’ for first NBA practice

Okeke finally returned to the court with his new teammates and was admittedly nervous during his first practice.

[jwplayer gGabj0xN]

Nearly two years have passed since Chuma Okeke last played competitively on the court but that all changed on Friday when the former Auburn Tigers forward participated in his first practice with the Orlando Magic.

Of course, Okeke missed the entire 2019-20 season in order to rehab an ACL tear suffered in his left knee in March 2019 against North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament. He and the Magic agreed to redshirt last season to recover from his injury and not miss a year of his contract.

Okeke finally returned to the court with his new teammates as the Magic continue preparations for the 2020-21 season. Admittedly, he was a bit nervous ahead of his first practice, something he hasn’t felt since his time in college.

“I was very nervous, it has been a long time since I have been on the court,” Okeke said on a Zoom call with reporters. “After a while, I got it going a little bit but those nerves were still going throughout the whole practice. The next practice, hopefully, I should get used to everything. The last time I got nervous was probably the first or second game of my sophomore year in college.”

After such a long layover, Okeke said he is still working to get his conditioning back and his legs under him. He even recalled one play during practice when Terrence Ross blew right by him, something he wasn’t expecting.

The Magic have been using Okeke at the four on the court so far during training camp, a position that he said feels natural to him. He has been touted as a versatile player on both ends of the floor so he could eventually see time at other positions, as well.

Orlando begins preseason play on Dec. 11 vs. the Atlanta Hawks.

Magic officially sign 2019 NBA draft pick Chuma Okeke to contract

Okeke missed the entire 2019-20 season in order to rehab an ACL tear suffered in March 2019 during the NCAA Tournament.

[jwplayer eZ1ualGT]

The Orlando Magic on Monday signed former Auburn Tigers forward Chuma Okeke, the 16th pick in the NBA draft, to his rookie-scale contract, the organization announced in a press release.

Okeke missed the entire 2019-20 season in order to rehab an ACL tear suffered in his left knee in March 2019 against North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament. He and the Magic agreed to redshirt last season to recover from his injury and not miss a year of his contract.

Okeke has spent much of his time rehabbing with the Magic’s G League affiliate in Lakeland, roughly one hour west of Orlando. He has practiced with some of the team’s G League players and has supported his teammates in Lakeland.

Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in August that Okeke was at the late stages of his recovery. He was unable to practice in 5-on-5 settings due to the coronavirus pandemic but will be integrated into workouts prior to next season.

Chuma Okeke signs rookie contract with Orlando Magic

Chuma Okeke was selected with the 16th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft after becoming a star for the Auburn team that made the Final Four

We will finally get to see Chuma Okeke in an Orlando Magic uniform this upcoming NBA season.

The former Auburn star and 16th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft has signed his rookie contract with the team. Okeke missed all of last season due to rehabbing after tearing his ACL in Auburn’s Sweet 16 victory against North Carolina in the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

Chuma Okeke is in the ‘late stages’ of his rehab from knee surgery

Magic first-round pick Chuma Okeke is nearing the end of his recovery from a torn ACL suffered in March 2019 during the NCAA Tournament.

[jwplayer iSQVM3BJ]

Orlando Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman on Monday said that Chuma Okeke, the 16th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, is in the late stages of his recovery from knee surgery, according to Philip Rossman-Reich of Orlando Magic Daily.

The former Auburn forward suffered an ACL tear in his left knee in March 2019 against North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament. Okeke is the only unsigned first-round pick from the 2019 NBA Draft after he agreed to redshirt the 2019-20 season in order to rehab his knee.

Okeke has spent much of his time rehabbing with the Magic’s G League affiliate in Lakeland, roughly one hour west of Orlando. He has practiced with some of the team’s G League players and has supported his teammates in Lakeland.

The road back for Okeke is not complete yet, however. He will still need to participate in 5-on-5 practices with the Magic. Due to workout restrictions, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the team is unsure when he will be able to practice with the team ahead of next season.

The Magic view Okeke as a potential player that can impact games on both ends of the floor. Head coach Steve Clifford believes Okeke is a perfect fit with the team as a player that is versatile on defense and can help stretch the floor on offense.

The organization has high hopes for Okeke and Weltman has said in the past that the team will not rush him back into action early but it appears likely that Okeke will suit up for the Magic next season.

Auburn basketball: Why JT Thor is a perfect fit on the Plains

Auburn freshman JT Thor will be a force for the Tigers.

Auburn freshman forward JT Thor has the kind of growth mindset that fits perfectly in Bruce Pearl’s program. It’s a mentality that harks back to the 2017 and 2018 teams who found great success when they were dramatically underestimated.

The rising star discussed a few of his favorite things as well as his playing career, both past and present, with AuburnTigers.com’s Greg Ostendorf earlier this week.

Here’s a few quick facts:

  • Thor’s favorite movie is Scarface
  • He loves his mom’s cooking
  • He intends to major in Business Marketing
  • Thor models his game after Kevin Durant and says the 31-year old Nets forward was an inspiration to him growing up
  • Yes, his favorite Marvel character is Thor not just because they share the same name, but because they, “can both drop the hammer. That thunderous dunk.”

Another interesting fact is that he grew up in Alaska before eventually moving to Norcross, Georgia. He wants everyone to know that in Alaska it does not snow there every single day and that while the winters are brutal the summers are actually very sunny and warm.

So, how does a kid who was born in Nebraska and raised in Alaska end up at Auburn?

According to him it all started on February 8, 2020 when the four star recruit attended the LSU vs Auburn basketball game on his first unofficial visit.

“They (Auburn) were down by 20, and they came back and won the game. The whole time I was on the visit, it just opened my eyes. It wasn’t even an official visit yet. But as soon as I came here, it was like “I think I want to be here.” It made me want to come on another visit, so I came to the game vs. Texas A&M. They lost, but after that, I was ready to plan my official and commit. This is where I wanted to be. It’s a good environment, a family-type environment that I want to be in.”

Thor says he’s ready to grow as a player under Bruce Pearl’s leadership. He cites Chuma Okeke, Isaac Okoro, and Tobias Harris (Tennessee) as models for his own playing potential under Coach Pearl. The freshman is ready to make an impact on both sides of the court and believes the 2020 class is one of the best in the country.

After losing six starters this spring (5 seniors and 1 lottery pick) preseason talking heads aren’t giving Auburn much love going in to the 2020-2021 basketball season. It’s nothing new for Coach Pearl and Auburn. JT Thor just arrived on campus and he already knows,

“I feel like we’re all underdogs. Everybody is an underdog, and we’re coming in with a chip on our shoulder. People are sleeping on us.”

This team is young, but they’re worth watching out for.
