Newly offered RB talks Clemson offer, says he’s never really met a guy like Spiller

Following Jeremiah Cobb’s commitment to Auburn University, Clemson made the expected move of offering rising senior three-star running back Christopher Johnson, Jr.

Johnson, who hails from Fort Lauderdale’s (Fla.) High School told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview last week that he knew that the offer was coming, so when running backs coach CJ Spiller phoned him with the good news on Wednesday, July 6, it didn’t come as much of a surprise.

Johnson, who recently included Clemson in his top six schools, which also features Alabama, Florida State, Miami, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, was in Tiger Town earlier this summer.

“The campus was lovely,” Johnson said. “That’s probably the best campus I’ve been on. I had a good time with Coach Spiller. He showed me around. I learned a lot while I was up there. I could see myself there.”

Johnson said it felt good getting to meet Clemson’s running backs coach in person. Spiller had been down to Dillard to watch Johnson during the live evaluation period, but this was, obviously, different.

“You know, I never really met a guy like that,” Johnson said of Spiller.

Johnson is intrigued by the success that Spiller has had at all levels and the opportunity he would have to learn from a guy like that.

The former Rutgers pledge has seen his recruitment just completely take off since walking back his commitment to the Scarlet Knights. Johnson decommitted from Rutgers on the same day he picked up an offer from the University of Georgia.

In addition to his Clemson offer, he has since added schools like Tennessee, Louisville, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Oregon, Michigan, UCF, Mizzou, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Miami, Florida, Penn State, Jackson State, Utah Ole Miss, N.C. State, North Carolina and Alabama, on his offer list.

He visited all the schools that are in his top six, except for Texas A&M and Florida State.

Johnson said that he will be taking an official visit to Clemson and imagines that might happen for a game day sometime this upcoming season.

Before making his eventual college decision, Johnson told us that he would like to take all five of his official visits, with most of them taking place during the season.

“I wanna go somewhere where I’m gonna produce early,” Johnson said when asked what he’s looking for in a school at the next level. “I want to get on the field right away and I want to have a good relationship with my running backs coach, my head coach and all the position coaches — I want to have a good connection with them. Chemistry is everything, that’s big for me. Having a bond and just being on a winning team.”

Tigers offer 2023 recruit at a position of need

After missing out on a four-star recruit last week, Clemson’s staff has offered a prospect at a position of need.

Clemson seems to be addressing a position of need in its 2023 class.

After missing out on four-star running back Jeremiah Cobb, who committed to Auburn last week, the Tigers have offered three-star running back Christopher Johnson Jr. (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). The 5-foot-11, 178-pound Johnson is the No. 30 tailback and the No. 413 overall recruit in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Before offering Johnson, Clemson had four running back prospects on its radar. Although Cobb listed the Tigers as a finalist, 247Sports has crystal balled the initial three to other schools.

So far, Clemson has landed 16 commitments in its 2023 class, with none of them being running backs. In the Tigers’ 2022 recruiting class, C.J. Spiller landed one recruit in three-star Keith Adams Jr.

Last week, ClemsonWire said that running back was the biggest position of need for the Tigers’ 2023 class, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that the staff has been proactive after Cobb’s commitment.

A running back prospect out of the sunshine state reported an offer from Clemson wednesday.

Christopher Johnson, Jr. — a big-time running back prospect out of Florida’s Dillard High School— announced the offer via social media Wednesday after camping at Clemson last month. He previously announced the offer on his Instagram account three weeks ago, but waited until Wednesday to make it more public.

Johnson released a top-6 on Friday, July 1, featuring the Tigers along with Alabama, Florida State, Miami, Ole Miss and Texas A&M.

The Clemson Insider previously reported back in May that Clemson was showing interest in a new running back target — Johnson. At the time of our conversation with the talented Sunshine State back, we asked Johnson what a potential offer from the Tigers would mean for him and his recruitment.

“That would be a big piece for my recruitment,” he said.

Johnson was committed to Rutgers for about a month earlier this year.

He wanted to open things back up as he evaluated his options going forward. That seemed to be a wise choice, as he’s seen his recruitment take off since backing off his pledge to the Scarlet Knights.

Clemson has yet to secure the commitment of a running back in its 2023 recruiting class. Montgomery (Ala.) Catholic four-star Jeremiah Cobb, who was on campus for the program’s official visit weekend, committed to the University of Auburn last week.

Johnson is the only current offered running back who hasn’t eliminated Clemson from contention.

After speaking with a Sunshine State product, The Clemson Insider has identified a new running back target for Clemson in the 2023 recruiting class.

Clemson running backs coach CJ Spiller first got in touch with Christopher Johnson, Jr. a couple of weeks ago. The big-time running back prospect out of Florida’s Dillard High School — a former Rutgers University commit, who recently reopened his recruitment — has been in constant contact with Spiller.

They talk to each other just about every day and have been going back-and-forth about the Grizzlies-Warriors series in the second round of the NBA playoffs. They chatted with each other this morning about Memphis’ 134-95 victory over Golden State Wednesday night.

“I’ve been talking to Coach Spiller for like this past week,” Johnson said. “We’ve just been bonding and getting to know each other. We talk about a lot of things outside of football, it’s not just about football with him. He asks me about personal things, like my family and things like that.”

“That’s big because he played in the league,” Johnson said when asked about potentially playing for a College Football Hall of Famer. “I know that if I go to Clemson, I could learn a lot of things and he could teach me certain things that I would’ve never learned. So, that’s big for me.”

According to Johnson, Spiller will be coming down to Dillard to watch his spring game next week. Johnson is confident that he’ll be able to earn an offer from the Tigers once Spiller is able to see what he can do.

“That would be a big piece for my recruitment,” he said regarding a potential Clemson offer.

While the two haven’t talked about Johnson coming up to Clemson for a visit, he imagines that conversation will be had after Spiller sees him in action. Johnson knows that he’s going to visit Clemson this summer, but there’s not a set date at the moment.

Johnson was committed to Rutgers for about a month. He wanted to open things back up as he evaluated his options going forward. In addition to Clemson, Johnson mentions schools like Georgia, Oregon, Tennessee, West Virginia and Louisville as the schools currently recruiting him the hardest.

Right now, Johnson is in the process of taking his visits this summer and made sure to tell us that he plans on making Clemson one of his official visits. He plans on making two official visits during the summer and likely the rest during the season.

In all likelihood, Johnson will commit after the end of his senior season.

With that being said, what are going to be some of the more important factors that he sifts through when it’s time to make that decision?

“I’m gonna be looking for a school where I can see the field early and where I’m gonna play at,” Johnson said. “Just good chemistry with my position coach. I need a home, like a home where I fit now, I need a home where I can produce.”

Talking about Johnson and his game, he describes himself as a self-motivated running back, who has a unique blend of speed and change of direction.

“I just feel like I’m one of a kind,” he said. “There’s not too many people that can do what I do.”

What top recruits visited Rutgers football this week?

Rutgers football hosted dozens of players this week for spring practice.

It was a big weekend for Rutgers football as the Scarlet Knights hosted dozens of top players from their Big Ten footprint as well as their recruiting hotbeds.

Spring practice is always a busy time for recruiting, but Rutgers certainly made this a very busy week.

Visitors from this current recruiting class all the way to freshmen were on campus on Friday and Saturday for the spring practice. A number of local players from New Jersey programs including Bergen Catholic and DePaul were on hand. Players were also in from Long Island and even Ohio.

The class of 2023 is coming along for Rutgers football and includes four commits. Two top 10 players from New Jersey, four-star defensive lineman [autotag]JaSire Peterson[/autotag] and three-star offensive lineman [autotag]John Stone[/autotag], headline this class. In addition, a pair of three-star skill players, Florida running back [autotag]Christopher Johnson Jr.[/autotag] and wide receiver [autotag]Yazeed Haynes[/autotag] of Pennsylvania, add some intriguing athleticism to the group.
