Christian Moore details hitting for cycle in College World Series

Christian Moore became the second player to hit for the cycle in the College World Series.

Tennessee second baseman Christian Moore made history on Friday in the College World Series.

Moore went 5-for-6 in the Vols’, 12-11, comeback win against Florida State. He is the first Tennessee player to hit for the cycle during postseason play.

Moore became the sixth Vol in program history to hit for the cycle. He also became the second player to ever hit for the cycle in a College World Series game, joining Minnesota’s Jerry Kindall in 1956.

“Through the whole game the only mindset I have is to win, get on base for my team, set the tone,” Moore said. “I have really good hitters behind me, so I just want to get on for them.

“Really, to be honest, I didn’t know I did it. I was just so hyper-focused on winning and just that next task. I guess talk about that last AB, just want to fight. Down to my last strike there with two outs, just want to fight. It’s a battle. Me versus him, mano a mano, and I guess I won that one.”

Tennessee’s Christian Moore hits for historic cycle during College World Series

Christian Moore hit the second cycle in the history of the College World Series on Friday night.

Tennessee star infielder Christian Moore is one of the top college prospects in the 2024 MLB draft, and he’s made himself a lot of money in the postseason.

Moore has helped carry the top-seeded Volunteers to Omaha for the third time in the last four years, and the junior did something even more special than that during the team’s first game in Omaha against Florida State.

He hit for the cycle for just the second time in the entire history of the College World Series. It was also the sixth-ever cycle for a Tennessee player and the first in the postseason.

After hitting a triple, double and single in his first three at-bats, Moore capped things off perfectly in the bottom of the sixth with a 440-foot two-run shot to dead center in the deep Charles Schwab Stadium outfield.

His heroics weren’t done there, as Moore’s two-out double in the bottom of the ninth kept the game alive, and he became the tying run in what was an eventual walk-off win.

It’s more of what Moore has been doing all year. He entered Friday night’s game with a .375 batting average on the season, and the home run to clinch the cycle was his 33rd of the season, pacing a Tennessee lineup that is arguably the best in the entire country.

Moore was ranked No. 40 on last month’s MLB draft board from ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, while Perfect Game slots him as the No. 22 prospect on its recent board. However, his performance in the postseason has likely moved him up a few spots on those rankings.

Christian Moore’s role in series finale defined versus Evansville

No. 1 national seed Tennessee (54-12) will look to advance to its third College World Series appearance in four seasons on Sunday.

The Vols will face Evansville (39-25) in a series finale at Lindsey Nelson Stadium (6 p.m. EDT, ESPNU).

Christian Moore started at second base for the Vols in the series opener against Evansville, while serving as Tennessee’s designated hitter in game No. 2.

Seventh-year Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello met with media following Saturday’s contest. He discussed whether Moore will play in the field or not in Sunday’s series finale.

“No, he’ll play second base tomorrow,” Vitello said of Moore. “His leg was sore, was a little iffy, and that was the decision. It was 100 percent the way to go today, and the decision tomorrow will be to play him at second base. That’ll be 100 percent the way to go.”
