UFC 304 results: Gregory Rodrigues outgrapples a bloodied Christian Leroy Duncan

Gregory Rodrigues proved to be too big of a step up for Christian Leroy Duncan at UFC 304.

[autotag]Gregory Rodrigues[/autotag] proved to be too big of a step up for [autotag]Christian Leroy Duncan[/autotag] at UFC 304.

Rodrigues (16-5 MMA, 7-2 UFC) landed heavy blows and multiple takedowns on Duncan (10-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) to win a unanimous decision on Saturday. The middleweight bout was part of the UFC 304 main card at Co-op Live in Manchester, England.

In Round 1, Rodrigues charged with a flurry and connected early. He kept Duncan on the backfoot. Duncan landed a leg kick, followed by a body kick, but Rodrigues proceeded to take him down. Duncan tried to reverse, but Rodrigues maintained firm control to outgrapple him in the opening five minutes.

Rodrigues landed big shots to kick off Round 2, prompting Duncan to initiate the grappling. They exchanged positions in the clinch before Rodrigues landed an uppercut on the break. Rodrigues went back to the clinch, but struggled to take Duncan down. The referee broke up the position as the pair started phone-booth brawling. A Rodrigues knee caused a big hematoma on Duncan’s head as he took him down at the end of the round.

Duncan attempted multiple spinning back elbows but was taken down early in Round 3. He returned to his feet quickly and started working for his own takedown. The pair clinched against the cage until Rodrigues got his hooks in for a rear-naked choke attempt.

Rodrigues, who stepped in on short notice, called for a ranked opponent next. “Robocop” has now won three straight, and five of his past six fights.

Christian Leroy Duncan vs. Gregory Rodrigues prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC 304

Christian Leroy Duncan gets a big stage to make a statement. Can he come through against “Robocop” at UFC 304?

[autotag]Christian Leroy Duncan[/autotag] and [autotag]Gregory Rodrigues[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC 304 at Co-op Live in Manchester, England. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 3-2
UFC main cards, 2024: 61-54-3

Christian Leroy Duncan vs. Gregory Rodrigues UFC 304 preview

Duncan (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) has people excited after winning three of his first four UFC fights. He’s coming off back-to-back finishes of Denis Tiuliulin and Claudio Ribeiro. … Affectionately known as “Robocop,” Rodrigues (15-5 MMA, 6-2 UFC) will also enter on the strength of back-to-back finishes.

Christian Leroy Duncan vs. Gregory Rodrigues UFC 304 expert pick, prediction

I can see why everyone is so excited about the prospects of Duncan given that he has all the classic attributes everyone from gamblers to pundits pop for: flashy offense, undeniable swagger and a long, athletic frame and look that many automatically associate/conflate with skills ceiling.

Although I’m leaving the door open to be pleasantly surprised in regards to Duncan (who is still developing, mind you), this might be one of those spots where I have to see it before I believe it.

Duncan appears to smartly be working on key areas like his boxing and wrestling given that his natural offensive kicking flows often lead him into this area anyways. However, I suspect that those sensibilities could be dangerous given that Rodrigues is the superior wrestler and submission grappler by a country mile.

Add in the fact that Rodrigues is the more proven product who packs some serious heat, and I can’t help but side with “Hobocop” in this spot.

The pick is Rodrigues by rear-naked choke in Round 2.

Christian Leroy Duncan vs. Gregory Rodrigues UFC 304 odds

Duncan is listed as a slight favorite at -110, with Rodrigues coming back at +130, according to DraftKings.

UFC Fight Night 238 video: Christian Leroy Duncan smashes Claudio Ribeiro with ground-and-pound

Former Cage Warriors champ Christian Leroy Duncan excelled violently vs. Claudio Ribeiro at UFC Fight Night 238.

[autotag]Christian Leroy Duncan[/autotag] may have turned in his most impressive career performance Saturday at the UFC Apex.

On the UFC Fight Night 238 prelims, Duncan (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) smashed his way to victory over [autotag]Claudio Ribeiro[/autotag] (11-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) with a ground-and-pound TKO stoppage at 1:57 of Round 2.

After some slick striking on the feet, and some elusive defense of Ribeiro’s wild charging attacks, Duncan got the fight to the canvas and mounted. From the front mount and back mount, Duncan rained down elbows and punches until the referee dove in.

Duncan, 28, has a UFC win streak for the first time. His other promotional victories came against Dusko Todorovic and Denis Tiuliulin. Ribeiro falls to 1-3 in his most recent four.

Uros Medic, Christian Leroy Duncan get new UFC Fight Night 232 opponents days before event

The UFC matchmakers have been hard at work with multiple replacements needed during fight week.

UFC Fight Night 232 has encountered two fight week changes thus far, and it’s only Tuesday.

With [autotag]Cesar Almeida[/autotag] and [autotag]Jonny Parsons[/autotag] out of Saturday’s event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, [autotag]Christian Leroy Duncan[/autotag] and [autotag]Uros Medic[/autotag] have new opponents.

Three people with knowledge of the changes recently informed MMA Junkie of them but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Almeida (4-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who withdrew due to an infection, has been replaced by [autotag]Denis Tiuliulin[/autotag] (11-8 MMA, 1-3 UFC) and will fight Duncan (8-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in a middleweight bout on the preliminary card. The pairing was first reported by Vestnik MMA.

Tiuliulin looks to snap a two-fight skid. He most recently competed in August when he was quickly finished with strikes by Gregory Rodrigues. Duncan is a former Cage Warriors middleweight champion who will look to bounce back from his first career loss, a unanimous decision dropped vs. Armen Petrosyan in June.

Parsons is out for an undisclosed reason. He’s been replaced by promotional newcomer [autotag]Myktybek Orolbai Uulu[/autotag] (11-1-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who will fight Medic (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in a welterweight bout on the main card. The matchup was first reported by MMA Orbit.

Uulu is an LFA standout with 10 finishes (six knockouts and four submissions) in 11 victories. Medic rides a two-fight winning streak into the matchup with TKO finishes of Omar Morales and Matthew Semelsberger.
