Dontae Manning looking for breakout season in fourth year at Oregon

It’s taken a while for Dontae Manning to find his footing in Eugene, but 2023 might be the season he breaks out.

Since before he began his college career, Dontae Manning, a cornerback for the Oregon Ducks, has had big things expected of him. He expects the same things of himself and recognizes that his past two seasons haven’t cut it.

“I felt like I left a lot of plays out there that I could have made for my teammates and for this defense,” he said.

In the class of 2020, Manning was a 5-star recruit for the Ducks and was the fourth-best cornerback recruit in the country according to 247Sports. To this day, he is still the highest-rated CB to ever sign at Oregon. Unfortunately, he was kept off the field that year for what would’ve been his freshman season. Manning’s seasons in 2021 and 2022 weren’t bad, but not at the level of someone who was previously expected to be a first-round draft pick.

Despite not yet reaching the heights we were promised, Manning is optimistic and excited for the 2023 season. He has been working hard this spring to develop what he recognizes as the weaker parts of his game.

“Working on my ball skills, using my length more, and more physicality just for myself, but just being able to use my tools and create a bigger tool bag,” he said.

One reason for fans to be optimistic is that 2023 will be the first time Manning plays under a defensive system that he already knows. This will be Manning’s fourth season as a Duck, but it will be his first playing with the same head coach and defensive coordinator two years in a row, which is something he thinks he will benefit from.

“From year one to year two is massive,” Manning said. “Year one was like a trial run. We know the system, we know the coaches, and we know what we’re supposed to do with the technique. So then it’s just adding pieces to it, now adding pieces for me to go to that next level.”

This offseason, Oregon lost star cornerback Christian Gonzalez — who is projected to be taken in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday. Additionally, former 4-star corner Jalil Tucker announced on April 15th that he is leaving Eugenes and entering the transfer portal.

Following both of these losses, the Ducks need a cornerback who is capable of locking down the elite receivers Oregon will face in 2023. Entering 2023, there is no reason it can’t be Manning that steps up to the occasion. With his talent, humility, and the benefit of a complete season under Lanning’s system, he can still be an elite corner, and the Ducks will need him to be.

NFL Draft: Tyler Forness’ top 13 cornerbacks

The NFL Draft has some pretty impressive cornerbacks. Managing editor @TheRealForno has nailed down his top 13 cornerbacks.

The 2023 NFL draft class is an interesting one, but the best position group is at cornerback. This class is deep and extremely talented throughout and you can get a starter in the fourth round.

When you look at this class, the value proposition the class provides an interesting conundrum. The Minnesota Vikings need cornerbacks but do they need them badly enough to take one in the first round? That is going to be an interesting development come draft day.

Here are my top 13 cornerbacks in the 2023 NFL draft class.

What cornerback will be available for the Commanders at No. 16?

It will be interesting if one of the top cornerbacks falls to Washington at No. 16.

If the Commanders want a cornerback at No. 16 overall in this week’s 2023 NFL draft, will there be one good enough to be dependable for the next decade?

The vast majority of 2023 mock drafts have seen the Commanders select either an offensive tackle or a cornerback. Sunday, Commanders Wire looked into the various options the Commanders might have at No. 16 if they select an offensive tackle.

Today, what if the Commanders actually select a cornerback at No. 16? Is there a consensus on who the most likely candidates are for a cornerback to be chosen in the No. 16 position?

Overwhelmingly, there have been two consistent trends in nearly every mock draft regarding cornerbacks. Devon Witherspoon (Illinois) is most often the first corner to be drafted, and when not, I don’t know that I recall seeing him lower than the second corner chosen. The chances are highly unlikely Witherspoon will still be available at No. 16.

The other consistency has been Joey Porter Jr. (Penn State) has been the cornerback Washington has taken in the most mock drafts. Porter is virtually always seen as a No.12-No.20 selection.

A third option that has been observed is Washington at No. 16 selecting Maryland corner Deonte Banks. Banks has developed at Maryland, and his NFL combine numbers of 4.35 in the 40-yard dash with a 42-inch vertical and an 11-foot-4 broad jump certainly illustrated his explosiveness as an athlete.

One other possibility at corner for the Commanders would be to keep an eye on Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez. Most mock drafts have Gonzalez being selected prior to No. 16, but if for example there is a run on offensive tackles Thursday night in round one, that would mean some others will unexpectedly be available for the Commanders at 16.

2023 NFL mock draft round-up: Experts share final predictions for Eagles at No. 10 overall

We’re doing a 2023 NFL mock draft roundup, and the consensus from the experts seems to be leaning toward Bijan Robinson at No. 10 overall for the Philadelphia Eagles

The 2023 NFL draft is now just five days away, and as the teams manage their final draft boards, the experts are releasing their last mocks.

Philadelphia has been linked to an All-American running back, the top edge rusher, defensive tackle, and offensive tackle on the board.

However, only Howie Roseman knows what he’ll do when placed on the clock.

With the final mock drafts pouring in, the consensus at No. 10 is Bijan Robinson.

Eagles hosted these 21 prospects on Top 30 pre-draft visits

With five days to go until the 2023 NFL Draft, we’re breaking down the Eagles’ top 30 visits and how that’ll play into Howie Roseman’s draft plans.

The NFL draft is fast approaching, and the 2023 influx of talent comes at a reasonable time after a mass exodus of free agents on defense.

Only a tiny percentage of this incoming class will make their mark on the league as a rookie.

With Philadelphia signing Jalen Hurts to a massive deal, GM Howie Roseman needs all his picks to deliver the goods immediately.

With the draft just five days out, we’re taking a closer look at the Eagles’ predraft visits and whether they offer a glimpse into what Howie Roseman has in store.

Each NFL team can meet with 30 top prospects on their draft boards.

The players you see visiting respective team facilities can help outline organizational needs or serious interests.

Philadelphia has two first-round picks, and they’ve embraced the process, bringing in a host of top names that’ll be selected up and down the draft board.

CB coach Demetrice Martin explains why Khyree Jackson made sense for the Ducks

CB coach Demetrice Martin explains why Khyree Jackson made sense for the Ducks

Bringing in a transfer, especially on the defensive side of the ball, can be a dicey situation. That player needs to fit into a particular scheme as well as fit in with his new teammates.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t.

Oregon brought in corner Christian Gonzalez from Colorado and it was an absolute home run. He was a first-team all-conference player and should a first-round NFL draft pick this week.

The Ducks are going to the well once again with former Alabama corner Khyree Jackson and so far, it might be another homer for the home team. According to cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin, Jackson is a transfer that hasn’t needed to adjust to the system and visa versa.

“You know, he’s a longer guy. He’s got a lot of exposure, some good ball skills, and then one of the things in the place that he comes from that is a very similar style of defense,” Martin said of the former Crimson Tide corner. “Our defense is probably not free-agent friendly. So it’s guys that have been in the system and know the terminology and know some of the fits and adjustments that usually thrive.”

Jackson came to Oregon for more playing time than he was receiving in Tuscaloosa. In two seasons, he just played in 13 games and has 14 tackles to his credit. Oregon isn’t expecting Jackson to be another Gonzalez, but at least he has the underlying tools to come close to the home run transfer Gonzalez was.

With his experience and talent, the Duck coaching staff doesn’t have to worry about Jackson fitting in. They can just let him go out and play ball.

Breaking down the Eagles picks in Matt Miller’s latest 7-round NFL mock draft for ESPN

We’re breaking down the Philadelphia Eagles’ six picks in Matt Miller’s latest seven-round NFL mock draft for ESPN.

We’re now less than five days from the start of the 2023 NFL draft, and all eyes will be on the Carolina Panthers with pick No. 1 overall.

The Eagles offer their amount of intrigue with two first-round picks and a GM known for moving up and down the draft board.

ESPN NFL draft analyst Matt Miller released a seven-round mock on Sunday, and he has Philadelphia reloading on defense with their first three picks.

2023 NFL mock draft: What Kevin Fielder would do

With just five days until the NFL Draft, contributor @TheKevinFielder goes through what he would do for each team in the first round.

We’ve reached the final lap of draft season.

If that sentence doesn’t give you a sense of excitement, then check your pulse. While the pre-draft process can be fun, it tends to overstay its welcome by late April. Between the number of mock drafts and discussions revolving around prospects, there comes a time when the process becomes a little tiring.

As a result, let’s take a minor step back from your typical NFL Mock Drafts. Instead of predicting how teams will pick, this mock is who I, the author, would select at each spot.

As a note, this mock still includes trades but does not involve potential compensation. Predicting the running rate for a pick in this year’s draft seems like a near-impossible challenge, especially with the number of quarterbacks who could go in the top 10.

Without further ado, here’s your “what I would do” NFL Mock Draft.

Falcons pre-draft poll: Which CB should Atlanta target?

Falcons Fan Poll: Which CB prospect would you prefer if Atlanta drafts one with the No. 8 pick?

Now that the Atlanta Falcons have parted ways with veteran Casey Hayward, they may be looking to add a cornerback in the 2023 NFL draft. The team recently traded for Jeff Okudah, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be on the team beyond next season.

If Atlanta does look to add another piece to its new-look secondary, Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez and Illinois DB Devon Witherspoon both figure to be in play. The two have consistently earned top-10 grades from scouts.

Which player would you prefer to see in a Falcons uniform next season (assuming they take a corner in Round 1)? Cast your vote in our latest fan poll below!
