Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo: Chris Oladokun is portraying Lamar Jackson at practice

Kansas City #Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says Chris Oladokun is portraying #Ravens QB Lamar Jackson at practice.

The Kansas City Chiefs are one victory away from returning to the Super Bowl and a chance at winning back-to-back titles. The effort from everyone on the roster is essential to the team’s success, and it stretches well beyond the active players we see on game days.

Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo knows the importance of slowing down Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson in the AFC Championship game.

On Thursday, he spoke with the media about working with Chiefs third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun as he is performing on the scout team against the defense, trying to replicate Jackson’s actions.

“He did it yesterday for us,” Spagnuolo explained. “I will say we’re fortunate that we have Chris (Oladokun). He did it last week for us. He was Josh Allen, and Blaine (Gabbert) did a little bit of it too, but you can’t simulate it.

“Even in practice, because you’re not tackling anybody, see, not finishing on a guy. But there are some things that we have talked about in how we should practice to prepare for him. And I think Chris gives us as good a look as we’re gonna get during the course of a practice week.”

Oladokun has spent the season as the Chiefs’ emergency option, primarily relegated to work on the practice squad. He showed well in preseason to earn a spot on the practice squad, and he continues to be a significant help in practice for Spagnuolo’s defense.

Jackson will likely be named league MVP after his incredible regular season. The efforts in practice from Oladokun will hopefully prove to be helpful in the tall task Kansas City’s defense faces on Sunday.

Former Chiefs QB Shane Buechele signs practice squad contract with the Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs surprised many fans who expected to see Shane Buechele remain with the team after the roster was trimmed to 53 on Tuesday. A decision that opened the quarterback to the other 31 teams in the league for an opportunity.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Buechele has signed a practice squad contract with the Buffalo Bills. The deal was announced a day after Chiefs general manager Brett Veach wished Buechele well after deciding to keep Chris Oladokun as the team’s third-string quarterback. Buechele played well through the first two preseason games but fell flat in the finale against the Cleveland Browns, highlighted by two interceptions as the starter.

The Chiefs coaching staff decided to move forward with a seasoned veteran in Blaine Gabbert, who played exceptionally well throughout the preseason games. Buechele gets a fresh start in Buffalo on their practice squad as the Chiefs turn the page and prepare for the beginning of a new season next week.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback room played exceptionally well through the three preseason games. The team committed to veteran Blaine Gabbert as Patrick Mahomes’ primary backup after he won the job in training camp.

According to Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, the Chiefs will re-sign quarterback Chris Oladokun to the practice squad. The addition of Oladokun will officially have three quarterbacks on the team, with currently no word on the status of Shane Buechele, who served in the role last season.

Oladokun played well during his time on the field in the preseason, aside from the late-game interception in New Orleans that cost the team the opening game. He finished with 181 yards passing and a touchdown following the interception and in limited action due to being the fourth quarterback in training camp. He joined the Chiefs on the practice squad last season after being released by the Pittsburgh Steelers as a rookie.

The Buechele questions will continue as he made plenty of fans and supporters during the preseason, but Oladokun proved he was efficient and deserving of an opportunity.

WATCH: Chiefs TE Matt Bushman catches touchdown to tie game vs. Browns

#Chiefs TE Matt Bushman made this clutch catch to even the score in Kansas City’s preseason finale against the #Browns.

The Kansas City Chiefs have successfully come back from a 19-point deficit to take the lead against the Cleveland Browns in their preseason finale and control their destiny heading into the fourth quarter of the matchup.

After a Dicaprio Bootle interception put Kansas City in favorable field position late in the third quarter, quarterback Chris Oladokun found tight end Matt Bushman for this impressive touchdown to tie the game.

Safety Justin Reid came in to nail the point after, which officially gave Kansas City their second lead of the game after seeing their first-quarter advantage evaporate after offensive dysfunction derailed their efforts early in the game.

Bushman has proven to be a consistent presence with the Chiefs’ second and third-team offensive units, and with fan-favorite tight end Jody Fortson out due to injury, he has a chance to sneak onto Kansas City’s 53-man roster next week.

Plays like this will certainly help him secure a coveted regular-season roster spot, and if he can make another touchdown catch in the fourth quarter of this game, Bushman could solidify his spot as the Chiefs’ fourth tight end.

5 Chiefs with something to prove against Cardinals in preseason Week 2

These five #Chiefs should play with chips on their shoulders against the #Cardinals on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs had several standouts in their loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, but others were not so impressive. Luckily, they’ll have their chance to redeem themselves against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday as they look to earn their spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster for the 2023 regular season.

While the Chiefs’ first-team units are relatively safe, their pool of talent deeper down on their depth chart is competing for jobs heading into Kansas City’s second preseason tilt.

These five players in particular should play with a chip on their shoulders against Arizona on Saturday:

Chiefs duds in preseason Week 1 loss at Saints

These #Chiefs left something to be desired in Kansas City’s loss to the #Saints on Sunday.

The Chiefs’ 26-24 preseason Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints wasn’t exactly a pretty game. There were some standouts for Kansas City, sure — even some studs — but there were plenty who didn’t exactly show out, either.

Below are Chiefs players who had a rough game in the first week of the preseason, and may have even hurt their stock a little in the process:

Chiefs stock watch: Which players impressed during preseason Week 1 vs. Saints?

Here’s a look at the stock trends for some #Chiefs players after the preseason Week 1 win over the #Saints. | from @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs are officially into the new year after finishing their first preseason game on Sunday with a 26-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

The final result wasn’t the goal of the preseason tune-up, but instead, the performances on the field will carry much more weight. Several players helped and hurt themselves as training camp concludes this week.

Here’s a look at how the stock is trending for some players after the preseason Week 1 in New Orleans:

Chiefs QBs Shane Buechele, Chris Oladokun emulating Texans two-QB system in practice

The #Chiefs are using Shane Buechele and Chris Oladokun on the scout team to emulate the # Texans’ two-QB approach with Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel.

The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for the Houston Texans’ unorthodox approach at quarterback. Last week, they debuted a two-headed monster at the quarterback position, featuring both Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel. Mills filled the traditional pocket-passer type of role, while Driskel was deployed mostly as a zone-read runner.

It’s a unique challenge for Kansas City, one that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says they haven’t exactly faced before.

“I’m not sure we’ve gone in knowing it was going to be a rotation,” Spagnuolo said. “You get in certain games and a quarterback gets hurt and you have to be ready for the backup, but listen, we’ve got to prepare for both of them. And, you know we have a No. 6 jersey (Jeff Driskel) out there in practice and a No. 10 jersey (Davis Mills).”

The Chiefs are using two different quarterbacks on the scout team during practice. Shane Buechele is working as the Davis Mills-type quarterback, making passes from within the pocket, with the occasional scramble. Rookie QB Chris Oladokun is more of a dual-threat quarterback akin to Jeff Driskel, recording 73 attempts for 166 yards and two rushing touchdowns in 2021 at South Dakota State.

“Chris (Oladokun) is great. Yeah, Shane’s (Buechele) great,” Spagnuolo said. “It’s a good point because when we play these zone-read quarterbacks – and those two guys, they know what they’re doing in that. We put the card up and they read it, but they’ll look at it and they know exactly what to do because they’ve done it most of their careers before they got into the NFL. That’s real helpful. I value that. Both of those guys to be able to do that.”

There is a bit of role reversal at times with Buechele and Oladokun as the Chiefs seem to expect some curveballs from Houston in Week 15. Being cognizant of which player is in the game and what exactly they’re capable of and likely to do on a given down and distance will be key.

“The players have to be aware of who is taking the snap because it looks like the football is different,” Spagnuolo said. “Now that could change, they could expand the package with (Jeff Driskel) and do some different things with (Davis Mills). But it’s two quarterbacks that – I think, one of them is a really good athlete. And let’s not be fooled, he can still throw it. He didn’t throw it a lot last week, but that doesn’t mean he’s not going to line up and throw the ball this week.”

Chiefs host QB Chris Oladokun for visit, WR Jaquarri Roberson for tryout

The #Chiefs had some players they’d previously hosted on top-30 visits in town for visits/tryouts on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs got a jump start on doing some background research on some potential practice squad players.

According to the NFL’s official personnel notice on Tuesday, the Chiefs hosted QB Chris Oladokun on a visit and WR Jaquarri Roberson on a tryout. If those names sound familiar, it’s because they’re two of the players the team hosted on top-30 visits ahead of the 2022 NFL draft.

The difference between a visit and a tryout is simple. Players who come on visits tour team facilities and meet with staff members, but don’t participate in football activities. Tryouts include a bit of everything, but most importantly football-related activities.

Oladokun was a prospect out of South Dakota State with a reputation as a dual-threat passer. He impressed so much that the Pittsburgh Steelers took a flyer on him in the seventh round hoping he’d play a part in their post-Ben Roethlisberger future. Oladokun was released on Aug. 23 in the Wave 2 roster cuts for the Steelers. He didn’t even get a chance to play in the preseason with Mason Rudolph, Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky deadlocked in competition through the first two games.

As for Roberson, he was one of the most productive receivers in college football over the past two seasons as the go-to option in Wake Forest’s offense. He was outplayed during the preseason by other receivers on the Cowboys roster and they too let him loose during Wave 2 roster cuts. He didn’t catch a single pass during the preseason, but he did have one tackle on special teams.

Why is Kansas City looking at both of these players? Well, they clearly had a pre-draft interest in both. Specifically, with Oladokun, he brings a dual-threat option to the scout team that none of the Chiefs’ other quarterbacks do. With Kyler Murray on deck for Week 1, they might be looking for that specific type of skill set for the practice squad.
