Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman has been terminated

The Texas Longhorns decided to go in a different route as they terminated Tom Herman just days after defeated Colorado 55-23.

There has been a lot of discussions about the possibility of Tom Herman being let go after the season. On Saturday morning it became a reality for the man who replaced Charlie Strong. The University announced they would be moving on from Herman in a statement.

With our football season coming to a close, our vice president and athletics director, Chris Del Conte, has evaluated the UT program’s strengths and weaknesses and where the program is relative to our goals. While we have made measured progress during the past several years under Tom Herman’s leadership, Chris has recommended to the university president, Jay Hartzell, that UT make a coaching change to get us on track to achieving our ambitious goals. President Hartzell and the chair of our Board of Regents, Kevin Eltife, concur with this recommendation and have approved the change. We thank Coach Herman for his service and dedication to our student-athletes, our program and our university.

Herman finished out his Longhorns career as the head coach with a 32-18 record and 22-13 in conference play. The latest name to replace him will be current Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian according to reports.

‘The real headline is that Urban said no’, CBS Sports on Tom Herman’s return

Barrett Sallee of CBS Sports had plenty to say on the topic of Tom Herman, Urban Meyer, and the state of the Texas Longhorns football team.

On Saturday, the Texas Longhorns and athletic director Chris Del Conte released a statement through their various social media platforms. “Tom Herman is our coach,” it was a very vague non-committal statement of support of their head coach. It felt more like a vote of confidence. While some media outlets ran with the idea that this stated he would return for 2021. Based on the statement, it was difficult to see how they came to that conclusion.

Brian Davis and Kirk Bohls released an article stated that CDC told the Austin American-Statesmen that he means for 2021. At the same time Chip Brown of Horns 247 wrote that the AD told their sources, “Tom Herman is our coach moving forward into next season.” Moving forward into next season can mean a lot of things. CBS Sports and Barrett Sallee discussed the statement.

“That the real headline is that Urban said no,” Barrett Sallee stated as he responded to Del Conte’s statement that Herman is the coach. “Because that is honestly the only reason that you would put out a statement like that, to begin with.”

The argument he made is one that makes sense, if you don’t feel like Tom Herman is your guy then what does another year do? Their actions as Sallee stated don’t give you any indication that Herman is their guy, flirting with Urban Meyer tells you they want to go in another direction at head coach.

“If there is nobody better than Tom Herman out there then fine, why are you going after Urban Meyer? If [Herman] was the second-best option then he would be winning, and he’s not.” Sallee continued, “maybe Texas thinks it is a little more beautiful in the mirror than it actually is.”

It is a monumental decision whether or not to cut ties with Herman, one that comes with a huge check to be written. Another year of Tom Herman does lower that number but at what costs? That is the discussion that Chris Del Conte and the administration need to be having behind closed doors.

Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte ‘Tom Herman is our coach’

Texas Longhorns athletic director Chris Del Conte released a statement on the status of Tom Herman. He states that “Herman is our coach.”

After months and weeks of silence from Texas Longhorns athletic director Chris Del Conte on the football side, he broke that silence in a statement. In which he stated, “Tom Herman is our coach.”

The rumors and reports have shown that the Texas Longhorns were in heavy pursuit of Urban Meyer. A pursuit that went back months to shortly after the loss to Texas Christian University at home in the third game of the year.

What was interesting about that report is that while Del Conte stated that Herman is the coach of the Texas Longhorns, there is no mention of the 2021 season. In fact, nothing beyond 2020. This feels like the de facto ‘vote of confidence’ for Herman.

Given the pursuit of Meyer, will the team go back to Tom Herman in 2021? Despite the message, this doesn’t give an indication. With the early signing period of the 2021 recruiting cycle just days away, this feels all too convenient.

Is it that they want the commits to sign with the Longhorns prior to making a move at head coach, or is it in fact that CDC believes in Tom Herman and his staff? Only time will tell but given the heat from the fan base, this probably isn’t going to sit well with them.
