Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Pittsburgh Pirates (64-73) and Chicago Cubs (71-67) play the middle contest of a 3-game series Tuesday. First pitch from Wrigley Field is set for 7:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Pirates vs. Cubs odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Cubs lead 6-5

The Pirates were blown out in a 3-game series sweep loss at home by the Cubs Aug. 26-28, as Chicago outscored Pittsburgh 41-23 in a wild series. Pittsburgh rebounded nicely with a 5-3 win in the series opener at Wrigley Field on Monday, cashing as a moderate underdog (+130) as the Over (7.5) just came through.

The Cubs had a 6-game win streak snapped, and they scored under 5 runs for just the 2nd time in the past 11 games. The Over is on a 10-1-1 run for Chicago, and the total has ended up going high in 3 in a row in the Friendly Confines.

Pirates at Cubs projected starters

RHP Paul Skenes vs. RHP Kyle Hendricks

Skenes (8-2, 2.23 ERA) makes his 19th start. He has a 0.95 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 11.2 K/9 in 109 IP.

  • Last start: No-decision, 5 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 5 H, 1 BB, 6 K in 14-10 home loss vs. Cubs last Wednesday
  • 2024 road splits: 3-1, 1.66 ERA (43 1/3 IP, 8 ER), 0.78 WHIP, .168 opponents’ batting average (OBA), 9 BB, 62 K in 7 starts
  • 2024/Career vs. Cubs: 1-0, 3.00 ERA (15 IP, 5 ER), 1 HR, 2 BB, 15 K in 3 starts

Hendricks (3-10, 6.75 ERA) makes his 20th start and 25th appearance. He has a 1.53 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9 and 6.1 K/9 in 102 2/3 IP.

  • Last start: No-decision, 1 2/3 IP, 6 ER, 8 H (1 HR), 3 BB, 2 K in 14-10 home victory vs. Pirates last Wednesday
  • 2024 home splits: 1-5, 5.32 ERA (45 2/3 IP, 27 ER), 1.42 WHIP, .288 OBA, 22 BB, 36 K in 11 appearances (8 starts)
  • Career vs. Pirates: 9-14, 4.09 ERA (171 2/3 IP, 78 ER), 1.30 WHIP, 6.7 K/9 in 32 starts

Pirates at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Pirates 6, Cubs 2

Moneyline

The PIRATES (-132) probably owe Skenes a victory. He left Wednesday’s start with a 10-3 lead, but the bullpen absolutely imploded. The collapse sent Skenes’ girlfriend Livvy Dunne, the LSU gymnast, to social media to complain about managed Derek Shelton, and apparently, the bullpen.

While the Bucs aren’t likely to play extra harder for her, they do owe the rookie All-Star. While he has been lights out, somehow, Pittsburgh is just 5-6 across his past 11 starts. The Bucs should have won last time against the Cubs, though. They’ll get the W here, especially against an atrocious Hendricks.

Run line/Against the spread

If you’re a little more on the adventurous side, playing PIRATES -1.5 (+136) is the way to go.

While Pittsburgh has just 11 wins in 32 games since July 29, it has won by 2 or more runs 9 times. So, if you like the Bucs to win, you should like them to cover the run line, too.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

OVER 7 (-110) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at best.

The Over has been on fire for the Cubs lately, going 10-1-1 in the past 12 outings, while cashing at a 4-1 clip in the past 5 starts by Hendricks.

For Skenes, the Over is surprisingly 2-0-1 in the past 3 starts by the rookie righty. And, the Over has connected at a 7-3-1 clip in the past 11 games for the Pirates.

Wind shouldn’t be an issue, blowing right to left at a 9-11 mph clip, so we’ll call it neutral at Wrigley Field.

Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Chicago Cubs (70-66) and Washington Nationals (61-75) meet Sunday for the finale of a 3-game series. First pitch from Nationals Park is set for 1:35 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Cubs vs. Nationals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Chicago leads 2-0

Chicago had a 4-run 5th inning to beat Washington 5-3 Saturday while covering as a -108 road favorite. RHP Javier Assad picked up the win (6 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 2 BB and 4 K).

Chicago has now won 5 straight while the Nationals have dropped both games in Chicago, losing the Friday opener 7-6.

Cubs at Nationals projected starters

RHP Jameson Taillon vs. LHP Mitchell Parker

Taillon (9-8, 3.85 ERA) makes his 24th start. He has a 1.20 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9 and 7.0 K/9 in 133 1/3 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 6 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 0 BB, 3 K in an 18-8 win at Pittsburgh Pirates Monday
  • Career vs. Washington: 0-1, 4.38 ERA (39 IP, 19 ER), 1.10 WHIP, 7.8 K/9 in 7 starts

Parker (7-8, 4.26 ERA) makes his 25th start. He has a 1.26 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9 and 7.7 K/9 in 126 2/3 IP.

  • Last start: Loss, 4 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K in a 5-2 loss vs. the New York Yankees Monday
  • First career start vs. Cubs

  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Cubs -1.5 (+135) | Nationals +1.5 (-160)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 9 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Cubs at Nationals picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 2, Nationals 1

Moneyline

BET CUBS (-125).

The Cubs enter as the much hotter team as they are 8-2 in their last 10 games and 7-1 in their last 8 games on on the road. Washington is only 5-5 in its last 10 games and 2-3 in its last 5 games at home.

Chicago has also won 4 straight games vs. Washington and is 4-3 in its last 7 meetings with the Nationals in Washington.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

I like the Nationals’ odds of covering here as +1.5 (-160) underdogs, but this line is set just slightly too favorably to risk betting on. Bet on the moneyline and/or total instead.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 9 (-120).

For Washington, the Under is 8-2 in its last 10 overall and is 4-1 in its last 5 losses. The Under has also hit in 6 of the last 7 Chicago-Washington matchups in the Nation’s Capital.

This is a very slight lean as the Over is 8-1-1 in Chicago’s last 10 and 4-1 in the last 5 matchups between these squads.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Chicago Cubs (67-66) and Pittsburgh Pirates (62-70) meet for a Wednesday matinee as they close out a 3-game NL Central series. First pitch from PNC Park is slated for 12:35 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Cubs vs. Pirates odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Cubs lead 5-4

Chicago has taken the 1st 2 games of this series and is 5-1 over its last 6 games. The Cubs have scored 27 runs in the 2 wins at Pittsburgh; they have averaged a robust 9.83 runs per game since Aug. 22.

The Pirates are 1-3 over their last 4. In home games against Chicago, Pittsburgh has lost 3 straight and 4 of its last 5.

Cubs at Pirates projected starters

RHP Kyle Hendricks vs. RHP Paul Skenes

Hendricks (3-10, 6.33 ERA) makes his 19th start and 24th appearance. He has a 1.45 WHIP, 2.6 BB/9 and 6.0 K/9 through 101 IP.

  • Last outing: No-decision, 4 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 0 K in 6-3 win at Miami Marlins Friday
  • 2024 road stats: 2-5, 7.16 ERA (55 1/3 IP, 44 ER), 1.46 WHIP, 5.0 K/9 in 12 appearances (10 starts)
  • 2024 vs. Pirates: 0-1, 7.45 ERA (9 2/3 IP, 8 ER), 1.76 WHIP, 8.4 K/9 in 2 starts
  • Career vs. Pirates: 9-14, 3.81 ERA (170 IP, 72 ER), 170 H, 42 BB, 126 K in 31 starts

Skenes (8-2, 2.16 ERA) makes his 18th start. The rookie owns a 0.94 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 11.3 K/9 in 104 IP.

  • Last outing: Win, 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 9 K in 7-0 home victory vs. Cincinnati Reds Thursday
  • 2024 home stats: 5-1, 2.52 ERA (60 2/3 IP, 17 ER), 1.06 WHIP, 10.1 K/9 in 10 starts
  • Career vs. Cubs: 1-0, 2.70 ERA (10 IP, 3 ER), 6 H, 3 BB, 18 K in 2 starts in 2024

  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Cubs +1.5 (-155) | Pirates -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 8 (O: -115 | U: -105)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Cubs at Pirates picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 5, Pirates 4

Moneyline

Pittsburgh is 4-16 over its last 20 games.

Skenes puts the best foot forward for the Bucs, but Hendricks, who has been undone by a .425 batting average on balls in play in high-leverage situations, figures as more of a 4.25-ERA performer. And so he is likely being undervalued by bettors.

As a team, the Cubs have slightly underplayed their 4.41 RPG and 4.17 RPG allowed. Now fighting for an NL Wild Card slot, CHICAGO (+140) is the value side of this match-up.

Run line/Against the spread

Look to the ML for the best leverage here. AVOID.

Over/Under

The Over has cashed is 6 of Chicago’s last 7 games. And it is 9-2 across Pittsburgh’s 11 games at home.

On a near-90-degree afternoon at PNC and with some slight Skenes fade and recent play to the Chicago bats, peg a lean on the OVER 8 (-115).

Detroit Tigers at Chicago Cubs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Detroit Tigers at Chicago Cubs odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Detroit Tigers (61-64) and Chicago Cubs (61-64) open a 3-game series Tuesday. First pitch from Wrigley Field is set for 8:05 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Tigers vs. Cubs odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Cubs lead 2-1

The Tigers surprised the New York Yankees over the weekend, winning 2 of 3 games. Despite the winning ways, Detroit has struggled to score runs lately, going for just 12 runs in the past 5 outings, or 2.4 runs per game (RPG).

Pitching has been amazing for the Tigers lately, allowing 4 or fewer runs in 12 straight outings, with the Under going 9-3 during the impressive span.

The Cubs were denied a 3-game interleague series sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays over the weekend, losing 1-0 on Sunday after winning a pair of 1-run games Friday and Saturday. The Under is 4-1 in the past 5 outings for Chicago.

Detroit has managed an 18-19 record in interleague play, while going 30-32 on the road. Chicago is an impressive 23-14 in 37 tries against the AL, while the Cubbies are 34-28 in the Friendly Confines this season.

Tigers at Cubs projected starters

TBD vs. RHP Javier Assad

No Detroit pitcher announced at time of publishing

Assad (5-3, 3.19 ERA) makes his 23rd start. He has a 1.37 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9 and 7.7 K/9 in 107 1/3 IP.

  • Last start: No-decision, 4 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 2 K in 2-1 road loss vs. Cleveland Guardians last Tuesday
  • 2024 home splits: 2-1, 2.38 ERA (53 IP, 14 ER), 1.40 WHIP, .226 opponents’ batting average (OBA), 4 HR, 30 BB, 41 K in 11 starts
  • Career vs. Tigers: 0-0, 3.38 ERA (5 1/3 IP, 2 ER), 1.31 WHIP, 6.8 K/9 in 1 start

  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Tigers +1.5 (-170) | Cubs -1.5 (+140)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 7.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Tigers at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 3, Tigers 2

Moneyline

The CUBS (-158) are a strong play behind Assad in this series opener.

The Tigers (+134) have played good baseball lately, but they’ve struggled to score runs. On the road, the Tigers have managed a 5-5 record across the past 10 outings.

Detroit isn’t a pushover, though. The pitching staff has been a bit crushed by injuries, but manager A.J. Hinch is doing it with mirrors. They’re expected to use an opener or minor-league call-up for Tuesday. The Tigers pitching staff has managed a 2.08 ERA, 3.07 FIP and 2.2 fWAR in the past 14 days, more than holding their own despite a bevy of ailments, so be careful.

Run line/Against the spread

While the Tigers +1.5 (-170) have been doing a good job pitching, it’s too expensive playing Detroit at this price.

The Tigers are 10-1 in the past 11 games on the run line as an underdog, with 7 outright wins during the span. If you’re a little more on the conservative side, back Detroit, but it’s tough to make that wager when it’s not even certain who the starting pitcher will be.

PASS.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

UNDER 7.5 (-110) is the best play on the board.

The Under has cashed in 5 straight games for the Tigers, with the offense averaging just 2.4 runs per game (RPG) in the span, while allowing only 1.5 RPG in the previous 6 outings.

For the Cubs, they’re 4-1 in the past 5 outings. In addition, Assad has allowed 3 or fewer runs in the past 6 starts, and he has not served up a homer in the past 3 outings across 12 2/3 IP. Go low, and feel confidently in doing so.

Blue Jays at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 5, Blue Jays 4

Moneyline

PASS.

The Cubs have their ace on the mound and should come out on top. At this valuation, they are just too expensive to take. The Blue Jays aren’t worth a play either as an underdog.

Run line/Against the spread

BET BLUE JAYS +1.5 (-152).

The Cubs might be 2-0 in this series, but they are 0-2 ATS in the 2 games. On top of that, the Cubs have the 3rd-worst home-covering rate at 22-39 ATS. Similarly, the Blue Jays are the 2nd-best road-covering team at 40-23 ATS.

The Blue Jays have covered in 5 straight road games. While Chicago has its ace on the mound, it is 2-3 ATS in his last 5 starts, winning 2 of those 3 by 1 run. Considering those trends, take BLUE JAYS +1.5 (-152) despite the expensive value.

Over/Under

BET OVER 7 (-105).

The Cubs are 5-4 O/U in their last 9 games, and they have gone Over in Imanga’s last 4 starts. Chicago has scored 19 runs through its last 5 games and has allowed at least 5 runs in 2 of its last 3 games.

The Blue Jays have gone Over in 2 of their last 3 games and in 5 of their last 10. They are 66-55-2 O/U and have scored at least 5 runs in 3 of their last 4 games. With those trends in mind, back OVER 7 (-105).

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Chicago Cubs (59-63) welcome the Toronto Blue Jays (57-64) to Wrigley Field Friday. First pitch to commence the 3-game series is set for 2:20 p.m. ET (Apple TV). Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Blue Jays vs. Cubs odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Cubs won 2-1 last season

The Cubs lost to the Cleveland Guardians 6-1 Wednesday, closing as +114 underdogs. While Chicago won the 4 games prior to that series, it was swept against the Guardians and was outscored 17-10. The Cubs are 7-5 over their last 12 and 57-65 against the spread (ATS) on the season. They are 32-27 at home this season.

The Blue Jays swept the Los Angeles Angels, ending the series with a 9-2 win Wednesday as +102 underdogs. Toronto outscored L.A. 19-5 in the series and has won 5 of its last 7 games. The Blue Jays are 59-62 ATS on the season and 28-33 straight up on the road. Despite the road sweep, they are just 5-5 over their last 10 away games.

Blue Jays at Cubs projected starters

RHP Yariel Rodriguez vs. RHP Kyle Hendricks

Rodriguez (1-5, 3.60 ERA) makes his 13th start. He has a 1.30 WHIP, 4.5 BB/9 and 9.4 K/9 through 50 innings.

  • Last start: Loss, 5 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 5 K in 1-0 home loss to Oakland A’s Saturday

Blue Jays at Cubs picks and predictions

Prediction

Blue Jays 5, Cubs 3

Moneyline

BET BLUE JAYS (-104).

The Cubs are 5-16 in Hendricks’ appearances this season. At home, they are 2-8. They have lost his last 3 starts at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs were also swept in their last series, while the Blue Jays are coming off a sweep of the Angels. Rodriguez has also pitched far better as of late. The Blue Jays have allowed just 5 runs in total in his last 2 starts.

Couple those trends together, and take BLUE JAYS (-104).

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

As run-line favorites, the Blue Jays are just too risky, and the Cubs as run-line underdogs are far too expensive to consider. Ultimately, PASS here.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

BET UNDER 10.5 (-122).

The Blue Jays have gone Under in 4 of their last 6 games and allowed 2 or fewer runs in 5 of their last 6. They have scored 4 or fewer runs in 4 of those 6.

The Cubs have gone Under in 2 straight games and in 3 of their last 4. Chicago has scored a combined 2 runs in the last 2 games. It has struggled to score consistently and is 53-65-4 O/U on the season.

With that in mind, take UNDER 10.5 (-122).

Chicago Cubs at Cleveland Guardians odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Chicago Cubs at Cleveland Guardians odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Chicago Cubs (59-62) and Cleveland Guardians (71-49) wrap up a 3-game interleague series Wednesday. First pitch from Progressive Field is set for 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Cubs vs. Guardians odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Guardians lead 2-0

The Cubs made a valiant comeback Monday, but ended up falling 9-8 in the series opener. On Tuesday, it was another 1-run loss, as the Guardians eked out a 2-1 victory behind LHP Matthew Boyd in his 1st start of the season.

The Guardians suffered a 7-game losing streak, but won the final 2 games in the Twin Cities. Cleveland carried the momentum home and it has now won 4 in a row after taking the 1st 2 games from the Cubs.

Despite the Under (9) on Tuesday, the Over has still cashed in at a 7-2 clip in the past 9 games at Progressive Field. For the Cubs, they’re 8-4 in the past 12 games, while the Over is also 8-4 in the span.

Cubs at Guardians projected starters

RHP Jameson Taillon vs. RHP Alex Cobb

Taillon (8-6, 3.50 ERA) makes his 21st start. He has a 1.18 WHIP, 1.7 BB/9 and 7.0 K/9 in 115 2/3 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 5 IP, 5 ER, 9 H (2 HR), 0 BB, 4 K in 7-6 road victory vs. Chicago White Sox Friday
  • 2024 road splits: 3-3, 4.50 ERA (56 IP, 28 ER), 1.25 WHIP, .270 opponents’ batting average (OBA), 10 BB, 38 K in 10 starts
  • Career vs. Guardians: 1-2, 4.71 ERA (21 IP, 11 ER), 1.24 WHIP, 9.4 K/9 in 4 starts

Cobb, acquired at the MLB non-waiver trade deadline from the San Francisco Giants, made his season and team debut Friday in Game 2 of a doubleheader in Minnesota. He started the season on the 60-day injured list recovering from hip surgery, while also dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder.

  • Last start: Loss, 4 2/3 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 9 H (1 HR), 1 BB, 1 K in 6-3 road setback vs. Twins
  • 2023 home splits (w/Giants): 5-2, 1.95 ERA (74 IP, 16 ER), .225 OBA, 1.04 WHIP, 15 BB, 60 K in 12 starts (2 CG)
  • Career vs. Cubs: 0-1, 1.50 ERA (12 IP, 2 ER), 9 H, 1 BB, 17 K in 2 starts

  • Over/Under (O/U): 8 (O: -122 | U: +100)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Cubs at Guardians picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 6, Guardians 5

Moneyline

The CUBS (+108) are a good, but risky, play behind Taillon, as they look to salvage something from this interleague series. While Taillon won last time out, it was against the lowly White Sox. And he has allowed at least 3 ER in each of his past 3 road outings, so expect to chew down your fingernails.

The visitors are the play, though, as the Guardians (-126) have Cobb on the hill, and he was underwhelming in his team debut over the weekend in Minnesota. The veteran journeyman could be a good addition to the beleaguered staff, once he gets his sea legs, but he is coming back from a lengthy layoff, so it to take some time before effectiveness returns.

Run line/Against the spread

The Cubs +1.5 (-205) will cost you more than 2 times your potential return, if you need some insurance and can’t fathom betting Chicago straight up. That’s way too much risk for not enough reward.

AVOID, and just play the moneyline if you like the Cubbies.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

OVER 8 (-122) might be the best play on the board with this combination of starting pitchers.

The Over has cashed in 5 of the past 7 starts by Taillon, and the total has ended up going high in 8 of the past 12 games for Chicago since July 31.

For the Guardians, the Over cashed in Cobb’s lone start with the team in Game 2 of Friday’s double dip in the Twin Cities. Despite the unexpected pitcher’s duel Tuesday, the Over is still 7-2 in the past 9 outings at Progressive Field.

Chicago Cubs at Cleveland Guardians odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Chicago Cubs at Cleveland Guardians odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Chicago Cubs (59-61) and Cleveland Guardians (70-49) play the middle contest of a 3-game interleague series Tuesday. First pitch from Progressive Field is set for 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Cubs vs. Guardians odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Guardians lead 1-0

The Guardians held off the Cubs 9-8 in Monday’s series opener. Cleveland opened an 8-3 lead after 6 innings, but a Cubs’ 4-run top of the 7th made for a harrowing final few innings for the Guardians. Rookie OF Jhonkensy Noel swatted a pair of homers, including a go-ahead 3-run HR in the bottom of the 4th. Nicknamed “Big Christmas,” he has 8 homers in 21 career games since his MLB debut June 26.

After a 7-game losing streak, the Guardians have picked up 3 consecutive wins. Cleveland also snapped a 5-game losing skid at home, and the Over is now 7-1 in the previous 8 outings at Progressive Field.

Despite the loss Monday, the Cubs are 8-3 in the past 11 games, while cashing the Over in 8 of the past 11 outings, too.

Cubs at Guardians projected starters

RHP Javier Assad vs. LHP Matthew Boyd

Assad (5-3, 3.24 ERA) makes his 22nd start. He has a 1.36 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 in 102 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 4 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 1 K in 8-2 home victory vs. Minnesota Twins Wednesday
  • 2024 road splits: 3-2, 4.17 ERA (49 2/3 IP, 23 ER), 1.33 WHIP, .257 opponents’ batting average (OBA), 8.9 K/9 in 10 starts
  • Career vs. Guardians: 1 relief appearance July 1, 2023, no-decision, 3 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K in 6-0 home loss

Boyd, who signed a free-agent deal June 29, makes his season and Cleveland debut. He last appearance in an MLB game was June 26, 2023, as a member of the Detroit Tigers. The 33-year-old southpaw has been recovering from Tommy John surgery. He went 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 15 starts last season for Detroit.

  • 2023 home splits (w/Tigers): 1-5, 7.49 ERA (33 2/3 IP, 28 ER), .294 OBA, 1.69 WHIP, 7.2 K/9 in 7 starts
  • Career vs. Cubs: 0-1, 6.75 ERA (6 2/3 IP, 5 ER), 7 H, 1 BB, 8 K in 1 start and 1 relief appearance, last facing them in 2021

Cubs at Guardians picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 6, Guardians 4

Moneyline

The CUBS (+104) are a solid play at plus-money as the short ‘dogs on the road in Game 2 of this series.

The reasoning for backing the road team is pitching. Assad has been solid, yet unspectacular, eating up innings for the Cubs, while posting rather consistent numbers.

Boyd, on the other hand, is a wild card. He is coming back from a major injury, and making his team and season debut. As a result, playing the Guardians (-122) is a risky play.

Run line/Against the spread

If you’re a little more on the adventurous side, forget about the moneyline, and play CUBS -1.5 (+164) for a much better payday.

The Cubs offense has been producing, going for 33 runs in the past 5 games, or 6.6 runs per game (RPG). Chicago should have a field day against the southpaw Boyd, who could be a little rusty, and won’t go terribly deep into the game, either.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

OVER 8.5 (-105) is worth a look.

Again, the Cubs have averaged 6.6 RPG in the past 5 outings, while the pitching staff has allowed 5.7 RPG in the past 3 outings. The Over is on a 4-1 run in the past 5 games for the Cubs, while going 8-3 across the previous 11 contests.

For the Guardians, the Over is on a 2-1-1 run in the past 4 outings, while going 8-2-2 across the past 12 contests.
