Bears WR DJ Moore doesn’t think a rookie QB will be better than Justin Fields

DJ Moore knows Caleb Williams and Drake Maye will be hyped going into the 2024 NFL Draft, but he doesn’t think they’re better than Fields.

DJ Moore hears the noise about a possible quarterback change next year, but he doesn’t want any part of it. The Chicago Bears wide receiver spoke with reporters following a grueling 20-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns, in which the Bears blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter once again this year. It was a tough day for the offense, which totaled just 236 yards and 10 points on the day.

For Moore, it was equally frustrating. The Bears’ top receiver finished the day with four receptions for 52 yards on eight targets while entering and exiting the field trying to manage an ankle injury. But even with the uneven performance, Moore still believes in his quarterback and doesn’t think a rookie would be a better option.

“Ya’ll asked me that last week? Somebody asked me that last week, I’m still like, bro, we’re all seeing this like, what makes him [Fields] not the quarterback for the Chicago Bears right now?” Moore asks via Marquee Sports. “I get you all got everybody coming out; what like two of them? I don’t think they’re better than Justin.”

Moore, of course, is referring to Caleb Williams and Drake Maye, the consensus top two quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft. With the Bears likely having a top pick thanks to the Carolina Panthers, one of those players could be on the Bears radar next spring. But Moore doesn’t want to see it. He thinks Fields is better than them and implies he wouldn’t want the Bears to move on in favor of one of them.

Fields had an up-and-down day on Sunday, completing 19-of-40 passes for 166 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions that came on Hail Mary attempts. Moore is having a career year with Fields, catching 80 passes for 1,123 yards and seven touchdowns. He seems content to keep Fields over drafting a quarterback, but time will tell if general manager Ryan Poles agrees.

WATCH: Bears LB Tremaine Edmunds gets pick 6 vs. Browns

Tremaine Edmunds gets the Bears back on the board with a defensive score.

The Chicago Bears nearly had a defensive touchdown in the first half. They made sure they didn’t miss their next opportunity. The Bears made the Browns pay on their opening possession of the second half, deflecting a Joe Flacco pass that fell into the arms of linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. The veteran backer followed his blockers up the right sideline for 45 yards for the score.

The interception was the second of the day for the Bears, following Eddie Jackson’s pick in the first half that went down to the one-yard line. That pick also resulted in points with a touchdown pass from Justin Fields to Cole Kmet. With Edmunds’ score and a field goal from Cairo Santos, the Bears currently lead 17-7 near the end of the third quarter.

WATCH: Bears DB Eddie Jackson gets interception vs. Browns

Eddie Jackson gets his first interception of the season in a big moment against the Browns.

It was only a matter of time until Chicago Bears safety Eddie Jackson got himself an interception this season, and it came at the perfect time against the Cleveland Browns. The Browns were backed up in their own territory when quarterback Joe Flacco threw a duck while under pressure that landed right in the hands of Jackson. The veteran defensive back set up his blockers and took the ball all the way down to the one-yard line.

Jackson nearly had his first defensive touchdown since the 2020 season but was stopped just short. Fortunately, the Bears were able to convert after a stressful goal line series, culminating with a touchdown from Justin Fields to Cole Kmet to take the 7-0 lead. Cleveland responded, however, to tie things up at 7-7 near the end of the first half.

Bears elevate LB DeMarquis Gates to active roster vs. Browns

With Noah Sewell out, the Bears elevated linebacker DeMarquis Gates from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Chicago Bears elevated linebacker DeMarquis Gates from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of their game against the Cleveland Browns, the team announced on Saturday.

Gates has played in three games this season and has one tackle. His most notable play came against the Detroit Lions in Week 11, when he recovered a fumble on a kickoff return that set the Bears up for a score in their 31-26 loss. Gates takes the roster spot of defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who was placed on injured reserve this week with a broken ankle, but will fill in specifically for rookie linebacker Noah Sewell, who is out with a knee injury.

The Bears and Browns kick off on Sunday at noon CT.

7 Takeaways from the Bears’ preseason finale victory vs. Browns

From Justin Fields’ return to Cleveland to Kindle Vildor’s surprising play, here are our takeaways from the Bears’ preseason finale win.

Preseason games usually leave football fans wanting more, but it’s fair to say Chicago Bears fans are happy with what they saw from their team as they put a bow on the offseason. The Bears defeated the Cleveland Browns 21-20 but it’s what the starting offense showed that has people talking.

Quarterback Justin Fields was masterful in his return to Cleveland, completing 14-of-16 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns. His quarterback rating was 146.9, just shy of perfection. The Bears jumped out to a 21-0 lead and held it until the final seconds after the Browns reserves made a late comeback that fell short.

This game was a dress rehearsal for head coach Matt Eberflus and it appears his team is ready for opening day in two weeks. He should have a lot to be happy about when looking at the tape because there was a lot to takeaway from this game. Speaking of takeaways, here are ours from Saturday’s preseason finale.

Bears vs. Browns: Everything we know about the Bears’ preseason finale win

The Bears finish the preseason undefeated, beating the Browns 21-20 on Saturday evening. We break down the game here:

The preseason has come to an end for the Chicago Bears and they leave with an undefeated record. The Bears held on to defeat the Cleveland Browns 21-20 to finish the preseason 3-0. Head coach Matt Eberflus had his starters play for most of the first half and they put on a show.

Quarterback Justin Fields was masterful, throwing three touchdowns to account for all of Chicago’s points. He threw passes to tight ends Ryan Griffin and Cole Kmet, as well as wide receiver Dante Pettis. He missed just two passes on the day and showed out at the place where it all went wrong during his regular season debut last year.

The Browns didn’t give up, however, and hit a pair of field goals to trim the lead to 21-6 at the end of the first half. Then things got dicey beginning in the fourth quarter when reserve quarterbacks Joshua Dobbs and Josh Rosen each scored to bring the Browns within one point. Instead of kicking the extra point on the final score, however, the Browns elected to try and take the lead with a two-point conversion that failed.

The offense looked impressive, the defense was stifling, and most important, there were no major injuries as the Bears get ready for the regular season. Here’s everything we know at the conclusion of the preseason.

WATCH: Justin Fields connects with Dante Pettis for another TD pass

Don’t tell Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields that it’s preseason because he is not letting up against the Cleveland Browns. After his score to tight end Ryan Griffin in the first quarter, the second-year signal caller kept his foot on the gas pedal and led yet another scoring drive.

Following a missed field goal by the Browns, Fields and the Bears went on a drive that took just five plays and spanned 52 yards, ending with a touchdown. Wide receiver Dante Pettis shook his defender out of his cleats on a post corner route in the end zone, getting open for an easy touchdown from Fields to go up by two scores.

Pettis has been active during this game on both offense and special teams. He has three catches for 37 yards and has been fielding punts. He’s fighting for a roster spot and is showing everything he can in the preseason finale.

Fields, meanwhile, has been on point all day and has just two incompletions through three drives. He’s 9-of-11 for 102 yards and two touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 144.5. The Bears lead the Browns 14-0 midway through the second quarter.

Myles Garrett named AFC Defensive Player of the Week following win vs. Bears

Browns DE Myles Garrett was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week after his 4.5-sack game vs. Justin Fields and the Bears.

With Week 3 in the books, the NFL announced its players of the week among the NFC and AFC. And with the way the Cleveland Browns defense delivered a beatdown of the Chicago Bears offense on Sunday, it’s not a surprise to find defensive end Myles Garrett among those honored.

Garrett was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his 4.5-sack performance against rookie quarterback Justin Fields. Garrett had 7 tackles, including 4 tackles for loss, as well as 6 QB hits to add to his sack total. The 4.5 sacks set a Browns record. In all, Cleveland sacked Fields nine times on the afternoon.

The Bears offense was limited to just 47 — that’s right, 47 — yards of offense thanks to Matt Nagy’s atrocious game plan and an offensive line that didn’t stand a chance against Garrett and the Browns’ defensive front.

This is the second time this season that an opposing player has been named a player of the week. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his near-flawless performance against the Bears on Sunday Night Football in Week 1.

Chicago will be looking to rebound following another brutal loss when they host the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Bears report card: How we graded Chicago in their Week 3 loss

We’re grading the Bears following their brutal Week 3 loss to the Browns, and it’s not good for the offense or Matt Nagy.

The Chicago Bears suffered a brutal defeat to the Cleveland Browns, which was the direct result of Chicago’s dismal offense that managed just 47 yards in Justin Fields’ first NFL start.

While the defense was sloppy in the second half, they were on the field for nearly 40 minutes and kept the Bears in the game longer than possible. And Matt Nagy, well, he had his worst performance as a head coach/play caller in his four years in Chicago.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what we saw during the game and how we graded the Bears in this loss.
