Texas vs. Oklahoma: Three areas of concern for the Longhorns

After narrowly escaping Texas Tech with a win, the Longhorns suffered a heartbreaking loss to TCU the following week. Continue reading “Texas vs. Oklahoma: Three areas of concern for the Longhorns”

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Sam Ehlinger’s last Red River Rivalry?’

The Locked on Longhorns Podcast breaks down Sam Ehlinger as he heads into what could be his final Texas-Oklahoma weekend matchup.

[jwplayer AntuLo7G]

The Locked on Longhorns Podcast kicks off the show with a discussion on Sam Ehlinger. Will this in fact be his last Texas-OU weekend matchup? Head coach Tom Herman jokingly stated “who said?” That was in response to a question about Ehlinger going into the final Red River Shootout game at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday. With the NCAA’s rule on college eligibility this year, seniors such as Ehlinger would have the opportunity to come back.

On Sunday’s practice the captain spoke about being disciplined and taking accountability to his team. Ehlinger obviously wants to win so what will it take for the Longhorns to get back on track on Saturday? Baker Mayfield decided to fire a shot regarding the rivalry, will there be any Longhorns who will chime in?

In the second segment the discusses switches to which Longhorns need to step up on Saturday. On offense it feels like it needs to be running backs and the wide receivers. Jake Smith returned to lead the team in receptions but if felt like it left some on the table. On the defensive side of the ball it falls on the pass rush and the linebackers. Texas is missing way too many tackles and it starts with the front seven defenders. Who are the dark horses who step up on Saturday?

With the Sooners on tap on Saturday, who will be the key matchups to watch? Oklahoma has a talented receiver in Charleston Rambo, which cornerback will need a big game to slow him down. Plus can Keondre Coburn win inside against Creed Humphrey? Plus Patrick and Cami lay out just how Texas wins this game against the rivals north of the river.

Spencer Rattler dialed in as Oklahoma leads Missouri State 41-0 at halftime

Oklahoma leads Missouri State 41-0 at halftime

Oklahoma is firing on all cylinders in their season opener, leading Missouri State 41-0 at halftime.

Leading the way is redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler, who is 14-for-17 for 290 yards and four touchdowns in his starting debut. Two of his three incompletions were both drops for eventual touchdowns.

A pair of true freshman scored the first two touchdowns of the game for OU, as Seth McGowan and Marvin Mims found the end zone early.

The Sooners offense opened up with a five-play, 58-yard touchdown drive commandeered by Rattler, and McGowan punched it into the endzone from one yard out. McGowan led Oklahoma with 34 yards rushing on five carries.

On the second drive, Rattler delivered a strike to Mims for a 58-yard score. The next was to Charleston Rambo for a 53-yard touchdown reception.

The Sooners would eventually tack on two field goals and one more touchdown in the second quarter.

Alex Grinch’s defense held strong, pitching a shutout and allowing just 37 yards of offense in the first two quarters. They finished with seven three-and-outs. Linebacker Brian Asamoah led the Sooners with five total tackles.

Oklahoma’s Charleston Rambo in first-round of NFL Mock Draft by ESPN

ESPN’s Todd McShay released his mock for the 2021 NFL Draft. Unsurprisingly, wideout Charleston Rambo made the cut for the first round.

It appears that OU’s first-round receiver streak isn’t over yet.

ESPN’s Todd McShay released his latest mock for the 2021 NFL Draft on Wednesday. Perhaps unsurprisingly, wideout Charleston Rambo made the cut for the first round.

Rambo would be OU’s third consecutive wideout taken in the first round. That feat has only been accomplished one time since the AFL-NFL merger (Tennessee, 1982-84).

“Rambo broke out a bit for Oklahoma in 2019, with 43 catches for 743 yards and five scores despite being a secondary option to CeeDee Lamb,” said McShay.

Not only will Rambo be stepping into the forefront as OU’s primary receiver in 2020, he’ll likely be doing so from the Z slot. Riley is known for consistently threatening to take the top off the defense via his past Z receivers, such as Dede Westbrook and Marquise Brown.

The Z slot is a natural fit for Rambo’s speed and acceleration package. NFLDraftScout lists the Cedar Hill, TX. native for a 4.48 40-yard-dash. In 2018, Alabama’s defenders learned first-hand just how quickly Rambo can get behind a secondary.

On April 13, 2019 third-overall pick Jeff Okudah listed Rambo as the most difficult matchup he faced in all of high school.

247Sports rated Rambo as a four-star prospect, the No. 27 WR in the class of 2017, and the No. 28 prospect out of Texas.

How Oklahoma players, coaches responded to Big 12 news

The Big 12 conference announced its schedule for the 2020 season on Wednesday, silencing any notion that the conference is preparing to bow

The Big 12 conference announced its revised schedule for the 2020 season on Wednesday, silencing any notion that the conference is preparing to bow out, at least for the time being.

After the Big Ten and Pac-12 postponed their seasons on Tuesday, college football came to a standstill awaiting the Big 12’s decision, which would likely determine the fate of the season.

By aligning with the SEC and ACC and remaining on course to play this fall, the Big 12 kept hopes of a fall football season alive.

Form coaches to current players to former ones, Sooners of every shape and size chimed in on the Big 12’s announcement.

Saints pick a first-round WR in Todd McShay’s first 2021 mock draft

The New Orleans Saints picked Oklahoma Sooners WR Charleston Rambo in the first 2021 NFL mock draft from ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay.

[jwplayer mVv4mgFy-ThvAeFxT]

The NFL is committed to moving forwards into the 2020 season despite the coronavirus pandemic, so the rest of their operations are continuing to prepare for the future. Scouts are busy connecting with college coaches to gather information on possible opt-outs and early entrants for the 2021 NFL Draft, and mock draft season is officially upon us.

In his first 2021 mock draft, ESPN’s Todd McShay has the Saints making a big addition to the wide receivers room: Oklahoma Sooners prospect Charleston Rambo. Here’s what he wrote of the selection:

One more receiver for the mock, making it eight total, or 25% of the Day 1 picks. But hey, the class is good, and even after that loaded 2020 class, there are still a lot of teams in need. New Orleans, which had only four picks in 2020, is on that list. Beyond Michael Thomas, who do the Saints have? Emmanuel Sanders will be 34 years old at draft time, and Tre’Quan Smith still hasn’t made the jump. Rambo broke out a bit for Oklahoma in 2019, with 43 catches for 743 yards and five scores despite being a secondary option to CeeDee Lamb.

Rambo played second fiddle to Lamb last season, but with Oklahoma’s leading wideout off to the NFL (and, annoyingly, joining the Dallas Cowboys) Rambo is set up for a monstrous 2020 season. If the Big-12 does end up playing, that is.

Pro Football Focus had Rambo with the best yards per target in FBS on in-breaking routes (21.6), noting his high potential for explosive plays with 16 gains of 15-plus yards. He’s an exciting prospect, and should definitely be on the Saints’ radar. But whether he ends up landing in the first round depends on a lot of factors outside his control.

It would make sense for the Saints to add another receiver early, though. Thomas is the only sure thing in the receiving corps, as McShay said; but both Sanders and Smith will be entering the final year of their contracts, leaving a long-term vacancy in the lineup. The Saints rarely wait for draft day to fill critical roster needs, but a difficult 2021 salary cap outlook might force their hand.

Oklahoma tight end Austin Stogner named to Mackey Award watch list

Sophomore tight end Austin Stogner was named to the Mackey Award preseason watch list on Friday.

The John Mackey Award, which annually honors the nation’s best tight end, released its preseason watch list on Friday.

The list included sophomore tight end Austin Stogner, one of only three sophomores to make the cut.

Stogner played in seven games last season, recording seven catches for 66 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Notably, both of Stogner’s touchdowns came on back-to-back offensive drives in the midst of OU’s 25-point comeback against Baylor on Nov. 16.

Stogner’s red-zone capabilities were vital to that comeback, and there’s good reason to believe that trend will continue into next season.

Lincoln Riley’s offense favors strong tight end play, setting up Stogner to follow in the footsteps of former Sooner tight ends Grant Calcaterra and Mark Andrews.

But Stogner is not the only Sooner receiving preseason accolades.

WR Charleston Rambo was named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list. RB Kennedy Brooks made the Doak Walker Award watch list.

And QB Spencer Rattler was named Big 12 preseason Newcomer of the Year.

It’s looking like OU’s offense is primed for yet another historic season.

Oklahoma receiver Charleston Rambo named to Biletnikoff Preseason watch list

Oklahoma receiver Charleston Rambo was named to the Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list on Thursday.

Oklahoma receiver Charleston Rambo was named to the Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list on Thursday.

The Biletnikoff is annually given to the best receiver in college football, and Oklahoma has had its fair share of Finalists.

After playing in just five games his freshman season, Rambo emerged as a weapon for Lincoln Riley’s offense in his sophomore campaign. He played in 14 games, and finished as the Sooners’ second leading receiver behind 2019 Biletnikoff Finalist CeeDee Lamb.

The junior posted 758 receiving yards and five touchdowns last season. He snagged 43 receptions, and averaged 16.8 yards per catch.

The last Oklahoma receiver to win the award was Dede Westbrook in 2016.

Rambo was also named to the 2020 Preseason All-Big 12 football team.

Oklahoma is currently schedule to begin their season on September 5 against Missouri State, but could be looking to move that date up in order to test for coronavirus between games.
