The Houston Texans have a promising edge defender in defensive end Charles Omenihu, but the problem for the former 2019 fifth-round pick has been finding his spot.

According to interim coach Romeo Crennel, the 23-year-old former Texas Longhorn is starting to find ways to be a consistent contributor to defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver’s scheme.

“I talk with Charles all the time,” Crennel told reporters Monday. “We have a good d-line-head coach relationship because I’ve got a d-line background. So, I can talk to him about what I see and what I think he needs to do. I think Charles is beginning to find his spot and how he needs to play the game because of his length and what he brings to the table.”

Against the Indianapolis Colts, Omenihu provided the Texans with two combined tackles, a tackle for loss, and two pass breakups in the 26-20 loss at NRG Stadium Sunday afternoon.

“He can’t play the game the way, let’s say Whitney Mercilus. He can’t play the game the way Whitney Mercilus plays the game. He can’t play the game the way J.J. (Watt) plays the game,” said Crennel. “He has to find out what his way to play the game is, and I think he’s beginning to find that.”

On the season, Omenihu has collected seven combined tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two pass breakups and 11 quarterback hits through his 11 games, two of which he has started.

Longhorns in the NFL: Week 12 recap and highlights

Week 12 of the NFL season isn’t technically over with the Pittsburgh-Baltimore game set for Wednesday. How the other former Horns performed?

The NFL’s Week 12 was a wild one. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens were set to kick off on Thanksgiving. That game was moved to Sunday. Then to Monday. Then to Tuesday. Then to Wednesday. Who knows if that game is going to take place before week 13 kicks off. The Ravens were also supposed to host the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. That game is now kicking off on Tuesday, allegedly.

This week’s NFL action saw the Texas Longhorns’ all-time leading passer return to the football field. Due to an injury to New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, Colt McCoy was thrust into action against the Cincinnati Bengals. He would lead them to a win to give them possession of first place in the NFC East.

The weekend also saw two players from the 2020 NFL Draft class have big contributions to their team. Collin Johnson showed by the Longhorns offense missed him this year and Brandon Jones recorded the first sack of his NFL career.

Texans’ Romeo Crennel says DE Charles Omenihu has figured how to play consistently

Houston Texans interim coach Romeo Crennel says that second-year defensive end Charles Omenihu is starting to play more consistently.

Charles Omenihu’s snap counts have fluctuated throughout the season, but the Houston Texans defensive end is starting to find more stability in the defensive line rotation.

According to interim coach Romeo Crennel, part of why Omenihu has seen more playing time is because his production has started to be more consistent.

“The thing about Charles, he hasn’t played quite as much because we rotated him in a little bit and some of that depends on what the defensive group we have in the game,” Crennel said. “Then some of it depends on how he plays, how he’s been playing. Early on, I talked to you guys about not doing the things we need to do on a consistent basis. Well, sometimes if you don’t do things consistently the way we need them done, then we don’t give you as many opportunities.”

On the season, Omenihu has collected 2.0 sacks, three combined tackles, two tackles for loss, and nine quarterback hits through nine games, one of which he started. The lone game Omenihu missed was Week 10’s 10-7 loss to the Cleveland Browns, and it was due to a hamstring strain the week prior that limited him to 10 snaps. The fewest snaps he has played in a complete game was 20 against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4’s 31-23 loss.

“I think Charles has kind of figured out what we need done, how we need it done,” said Crennel. “So, I think that we’re going to see him more and he will continue to have that impact on a quarterback whether it’s hits or hopefully I know for him, he wants to get the guy on the ground. So, he’s going to be working to do that.”

Houston could use consistent production from the former 2019 fifth-round pick as they take on Pro Bowl quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CT at Ford Field.

Horns in the NFL: Week 11 in the NFL recap

Week 11 of the NFL season is now under wraps. We take a look at how each player performed in the National Football League over the weekend.

Week 11 of the NFL season wrapped up on Monday night with one former Longhorn in action. Malcom Brown and the Los Angeles Rams were looking to take down Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on MNF. Despite getting the fewest carries of the backs, Brown led the Rams in rushing.

The Tennessee Titans and the Baltimore Ravens game featured the most Texas exes with five total. Kenny Vaccaro was inactive for this game or else six former Longhorns would have been playing in that game. The Arizona CardinalsSeattle Seahawks game featured four more former Longhorns.

Texans declare DE Charles Omenihu, QB Josh McCown out for Browns

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu and third-string quarterback Josh McCown are out for the Week 10 matchup with the Cleveland Browns.

Defensive end Charles Omenihu and quarterback Josh McCown won’t be traveling with the Houston Texans as they take on the Cleveland Browns Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at FirstEnergy Stadium.

For Omenihu, a hamstring injury he sustained during the Week 9 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars is the reason. The former 2019 fifth-round pick did not practice at all this week.

For McCown, the Texans already have the backup quarterback situation under control with A.J. McCarron backing up starter Deshaun Watson. The team nonetheless indicated that McCown was not being held out for any injury or COVID-19 related reasons.

Texans DE Charles Omenihu injured his hamstring in 27-25 win over the Jaguars

According to interim coach Romeo Crennel, Houston Texans DE Charles Omenihu injured his hamstring in the 27-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Houston Texans defensive end Charles Omenihu injured his hamstring in the 27-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday afternoon at TIAA Bank Field.

In the second quarter with 8:20 until halftime, Omenihu was injured on a first-and-10 run from running back James Robinson that gained eight yards. The blow was significant as the Texans were already lacking in their edge defense due to outside linebackers Jacob Martin and Whitney Mercilus being on the COVID-19 reserve.

According to interim coach Romeo Crennel, the injury happened because Omenihu is “a really fast guy.”

Said Crennel: “On the leg injury to Charles, Charles is a really fast guy and sometimes fast guys strain their hamstrings so he has a hamstring. We will work through that. Hopefully, we will get as many of those guys who got banged up back soon.”

The Texans also lost outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett with an arm injury. On offense, the Texans had running back David Johnson and guard Senio Kelemete both sustain concussions.
