Chargers’ Joey Bosa reveals battle with food poisoning ahead of return in Week 17

Joey Bosa had a little setback in his first game since Week 3.

Chargers star edge defender Joey Bosa returned to the field last Sunday in the victory over the Rams. Bosa had been out since Week 3 with a groin injury that he had to have surgery on.

Bosa was on a snap count restriction to get back to the speed of live-game action. He played 24 defensive snaps and logged three pressures.

While it was refreshing to see him back on the field, refreshed was not entirely how Bosa felt in his return. He had food poisoning that hit him the night before the game.

“I had gotten food poisoning on Saturday, so it was a kind of a rough outing,” Bosa said. “But other than that, my groin felt good. My mind was kind of somewhere else, luckily, so I wasn’t worrying about my groin as much.

“Kind of crappy luck, pun intended, with my first game back. My girlfriend is not going to be my chef ever again.”

Bosa is not entirely sure, but he felt like it was some fish that caused him to feel sick. He became dehydrated but was able to make a quick recovery with a six-hour turnaround from kickoff.

“Felt a bit weak,” Bosa said. “There’s a lot of variables going on, so it’s hard to know why I was feeling that way. But I think I was definitely a little run down from being dehydrated and not getting some food in me, and obviously being my first game back, but I thought I felt pretty good, need to get my wind back.”

Bosa added that it felt good to get reps again to build up ahead of the playoffs. He expects to receive more snaps this weekend against the Broncos than he did in Week 17. Then, he should be back up to a full workload when the playoffs start.

“It’s super exciting,” Bosa said on the playoffs. “Last time I was in the playoffs, it was the same deal with my foot injury. But like I said last week, I’m feeling much better this year and much more confident going into these games than I did that year.”

Bosa has been to the playoffs once, back in 2018, when the Chargers beat the Ravens in the Wild Card round but lost to the Patriots in the Divisional round. That year, he had a foot injury that he sustained in training camp, re-injured in Week 1, and didn’t return until Week 11.

Chargers’ Derwin James in concussion protocol, will not be suspended for hit

Derwin James was ejected for leading with his helmet and launching himself into Ashton Dulin’s helmet on a hit.

Chargers star safety Derwin James has entered concussion protocol following Monday night’s win over the Colts, head coach Brandon Staley said at his post-game media availability.

James was ejected in the first quarter after hitting wide receiver Ashton Dulin in the head and neck area with the crown of his helmet. Dulin also didn’t return to the game after being diagnosed with a concussion.

Additionally, James will not be suspended for the hit on Dulin, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero. However, Pelissero added James could still be fined.

Before being ejected, James had a leaping interception in the first quarter, marking his second of the season.

James returned to the playing field after missing Weeks 14 and 15 with a quadriceps injury.

When James left, Alohi Gilman was thrust into the action, where he was outstanding, replicating the level of play from the two previous games when he was the starter in place of James.

Report: Chargers planning to sign EDGE Jeremiah Attaochu

The Chargers are adding a reinforcement at the edge defender position.

The Chargers are planning to sign edge defender Jeremiah Attaochu, pending a physical, according to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper.

Attaochu is no stranger to the Bolts, as he was their 2014 second-round pick and played for them through the 2017 season.

Attaochu, 29, is in his ninth NFL season. He was with the Bears last season but tore his pectoral in Week 5 and was released in June. This year, he spent some time on the Ravens’ practice squad before being waived.

Attaochu has 20.5 sacks in eight seasons. He recently had a solid campaign in 2020 with the Broncos, logging 31 tackles, 21 pressures, five sacks, and nine quarterback hits in 13 games.

Following the loss to Joey Bosa, who was placed on the injured reserve list with a groin injury, there was no production at the edge defender position aside from Khalil Mack.

Chris Rumph II and Kyle Van Noy have struggled to get to the quarterback, amassing ten and eight pressures in seven games, respectively. Further, Rumph is expected to miss weeks with an MCL sprain.

Chargers injury updates ahead of matchup with Seahawks in Week 7

Keenan Allen is a game-time decision for Week 7 vs. Seahawks.

The Chargers will soon host the Seahawks, looking to pick up their fourth straight win before they head into the bye week.

The good news is that they may be getting back Keenan Allen, who has missed the past five games with a hamstring injury. Allen is questionable and will be a game-time decision, per Brandon Staley.

“He’s closer,” Staley said on Allen.

Sebastian Joseph-Day is listed as questionable with an ankle issue, but Staley said he should play.

The bad news? Los Angeles will be without Dustin Hopkins (hamstring), Joshua Kelley (knee), Josh Palmer (concussion), and Donald Parham Jr. (concussion), who were ruled out.

Hopkins is out for the next two to four weeks. Taylor Bertolet will serve as the team’s kicker in his absence.

With Kelley out, rookie Isaiah Spiller will be active, Staley announced Friday. Spiller has been inactive for each of the first six games.

If Allen can’t go, the Chargers will only have three active wide receivers. If that’s the case, Los Angeles will likely sign Michael Bandy to the active roster and promote John Hightower or Joe Reed from the practice squad.

Chargers HC Brandon Staley gives injury updates on Isaiah Spiller, Josh Palmer

Chargers HC Brandon Staley gave updates on RB Isaiah Spiller and WR Joshua Palmer before Monday’s practice.

Chargers running back Isaiah Spiller left last Saturday’s preseason game against the Cowboys with an ankle injury in the second half.

Head coach Brandon Staley gave an update on Spiller on Monday, adding that he is considered week-to-week. He will miss the preseason finale against the Saints this Friday and could miss the season opener against the Raiders.

Before suffering the injury, Spiller was in competition for the second running back spot with Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree. With him potentially being unavailable for Week 1, it’s likely Los Angeles will carry four backs on the 53-man roster.

In addition to Spiller, wide receiver Joshua Palmer is in concussion protocol coming out of the game against Dallas.

Palmer, the summer standout, had an eyebrow-raising performance with three catches on four targets for 75 yards and a touchdown.

We will update on the statuses of Spiller and Palmer once further information is released.
