Report: Chargers’ Chris Rumph II expected to miss remainder of season

The third-year player suffered a foot injury.

Chargers edge defender Chris Rumph II is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Rumph sustained the injury during warmups before Sunday’s game against the Lions. He was ruled out and was on crutches in the locker room after the game.

Rumph, the third-year player, appeared in six games this season and recorded five tackles and a fumble recovery. Across 37 games, he had 39 tackles, nine quarterback hits, four tackles for loss and three sacks.

With Rumph out, Los Angeles could call up Andrew Farmer or Brevin Allen from the practice squad or just opt to roll with Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu.

Chargers’ Corey Linsley to be placed on injured reserve

The Chargers will be without Corey Linsley for at least the next four games.

The Chargers will be without starting center Corey Linsley for at least the next four games.

According to multiple reports, Linsley is going to be placed on injured reserve with a non-emergent heart-related medical issue.

Linsley will continue working with doctors and specialists in the coming days.

With Linsley out, L.A. will turn to Will Clapp to resume the duties as the starter at center.

Signed last offseason, Clapp started three games while Linsley was out with a knee injury, food poisoning and a concussion in 2022. He was strong in pass protection, allowing just four pressures on 252 pass-block snaps.

Signed in 2021, Linsley has appeared in 33 games. In his first season with the Bolts, he was named second-team All-Pro and made his first Pro Bowl.

Chargers’ Derwin James in concussion protocol, will not be suspended for hit

Derwin James was ejected for leading with his helmet and launching himself into Ashton Dulin’s helmet on a hit.

Chargers star safety Derwin James has entered concussion protocol following Monday night’s win over the Colts, head coach Brandon Staley said at his post-game media availability.

James was ejected in the first quarter after hitting wide receiver Ashton Dulin in the head and neck area with the crown of his helmet. Dulin also didn’t return to the game after being diagnosed with a concussion.

Additionally, James will not be suspended for the hit on Dulin, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero. However, Pelissero added James could still be fined.

Before being ejected, James had a leaping interception in the first quarter, marking his second of the season.

James returned to the playing field after missing Weeks 14 and 15 with a quadriceps injury.

When James left, Alohi Gilman was thrust into the action, where he was outstanding, replicating the level of play from the two previous games when he was the starter in place of James.

Report: Chargers expected to have Joey Bosa back at practice this week

The Los Angeles Chargers will get a key player back.

The Chargers will get a key player back as the regular season nears an end and they get into postseason play.

Los Angeles is expected to get edge defender Joey Bosa back at practice this week, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and Bridget Cotton.

Head coach Brandon Staley teased the possibility of Bosa and left tackle Rashawn Slater returning, and it appears the prolific pass rusher will be the first of the two.

When asked about the status of Bosa, Staley said, “We’re going to take that on a day-to-day basis.”

From the day he begins practicing, L.A. will have three weeks to activate him from injured reserve.

Bosa has been out since Week 3 when he sustained a torn groin injury that required surgery.

Getting the four-time Pro Bowler is enormous for a defense that has finally found its stride in the past three games.

During the first two games of the season, Bosa and his partner-in-crime Khalil Mack were wreaking havoc, as they combined for 5.5 sacks, 20 quarterback pressures, and 13 hurries.

Throw in Kyle Van Noy coming into his own, as he has ten pressures and three sacks in the last three contests, and there should be plenty of production from the edge defender position.

Chargers DT Austin Johnson out for season with knee injury

The Chargers will be without their best interior defender for the remainder of the 2022 season.

One of the Chargers’ most underrated defenders will miss the remainder of the season.

Defensive tackle Austin Johnson has an MCL injury and fractured knee, per Brandon Staley. The injury cuts short what had been a stellar campaign for Johnson, who was playing like Los Angeles’ best run defender up the middle.

With Johnson likely heading to IR, look for Otito Ogbonnia and Christian Covington to split his starting role. Ogbonnia played 46% of snaps Sunday against Atlanta, while Covington played 39%. Both saw larger roles with Jerry Tillery out, and Tillery is a candidate to receive more snaps when he returns from his own back injury.

Johnson’s injury may also open a path for preseason favorite Breiden Fehoko to garner an active roster spot after being waived in favor of Covington between Weeks 1 and 2.

The 28-year-old was tied for the team lead in run stops with 14 but led the team in run stop percentage at 11.4%. His average depth of tackle was 2.7 yards. Ogbonnia has stopped the run at a 5.1% clip with an average depth of 4.1 yards, while Covington stops 6.3% of plays with an average depth of 3.6 yards.

Chargers WR Keenan Allen suffers another injury setback

The Chargers’ wide receiver room is thin heading into Week 9.

The bye week was a good time for Chargers players to rest and recover, especially the ones who had injuries.

However, that was not the case for Keenan Allen.

Allen said his hamstring worsened during the bye week when training.

He did not practice Monday or Wednesday, and it’s possible he will miss Sunday’s game against the Falcons, according to Brandon Staley.

After missing five games following the season opener, Allen returned to the lineup in the Week 7 loss against the Seahawks. He only played in the first half.

Allen said he felt great going into Week 7, but not 100%.

Nothing happened in the game,” Allen said on the injury setback. “Taking my time with it and just going through it how we planned it and just through the bye week, kind of hit it again.

“I don’t think it was a restrain or anything. It is just some more scar tissue that is trying to break off and whenever it is ready to heal, just got to let it do its own thing.”

If Allen does not play, the Chargers could be without their top three receivers. Mike Williams is out for weeks with a high ankle sprain. Joshua Palmer is out of concussion protocol, but Staley did not say if he will play.

That would leave DeAndre Carter, Michael Bandy and Jason Moore as the active receivers. Joe Reed or John Hightower would likely be promoted from the practice squad.
