Chargers’ Joey Bosa carted off with foot injury

Joey Bosa is questionable to return with a foot injury.

Early in the first quarter, Bosa hopped off the field with the injury, sustained while defending an Aaron Jones run. He collapsed on the sideline and eventually was carted to the locker room.

The broadcast reported that Bosa was emotional on the bench before being carted off and that the medical staff did not evaluate him. That implies the injury is more severe than the questionable designation suggests.

With Bosa out, the Chargers will turn to Khalil Mack and Tuli Tuipulotu, with the recently signed Justin Hollins as the third edge rusher.

Chargers’ Brandon Staley says Joey Bosa “feels bad” for crucial penalty vs. Jaguars

Brandon Staley said that Joey Bosa personally addressed his brutal penalty against the Jaguars with him “as only Joey could.”

Joey Bosa’s untimely penalty against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card round of the AFC playoffs served to help seal the Chargers’ fate and end their season.

There has been plenty of talk about Bosa’s behavior since the outburst, and head coach Brandon Staley addressed the matter in his end-of-season press conference.

When he was asked if Bosa addressed the indiscretion with him personally, Staley answered the question in the affirmative.

“As only Joey could,” Staley explained, laughing. “Obviously, he feels bad about losing his composure and what kind of happened as a result of it because it hurt us. We have to have poise in moments like that.

That’s what we talk a lot about, is having your best when your best is required. Joey cares a lot. We’re going to learn from that. I think he holds himself to a high standard. I have to continue to keep holding him to a high standard.”

Clearly, penalties like the one Bosa committed against Jacksonville are brutal reminders that discipline is everything in the NFL. Staley would be wise to continue stressing that fact to his players in the hopes of avoiding a similar situation next season, when a playoff loss might cost him his job.

Chargers’ Joey Bosa fined for unsportsmanlike conduct, criticizing officials

Chargers edge defender Joey Bosa faced some consequences.

Chargers edge defender Joey Bosa faced some consequences.

Bosa was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct twice during last Saturday’s loss to the Jaguars. As a result, the NFL fined Bosa a total of $55,546 for that and public criticism of officiating.

The first flag came after he said something to an official. The second was after he slammed his helmet to the ground reacting to what he believed was a missed false start.

Here is what Bosa said about the officiating that got him fined:

“I think there just needs to be more accountability. I mean, if I say something to them, I get a $40,000 fine,” Bosa said. “But if they blow a call that ruins an entire team’s season, they get to … they’re probably back in the locker room after the game, like, ‘Ha, got that (expletive). You know, yeah, got him. Fifteen yards. What a loser.’ I guarantee you that’s what they’re (expletive) talking back in the back. Whatever. Power trip. I’m sick of those (expletive) people.”

Bosa noted that his penalties resulted from a “heated game” and playing through his groin injury.

Chargers’ Joey Bosa reveals battle with food poisoning ahead of return in Week 17

Joey Bosa had a little setback in his first game since Week 3.

Chargers star edge defender Joey Bosa returned to the field last Sunday in the victory over the Rams. Bosa had been out since Week 3 with a groin injury that he had to have surgery on.

Bosa was on a snap count restriction to get back to the speed of live-game action. He played 24 defensive snaps and logged three pressures.

While it was refreshing to see him back on the field, refreshed was not entirely how Bosa felt in his return. He had food poisoning that hit him the night before the game.

“I had gotten food poisoning on Saturday, so it was a kind of a rough outing,” Bosa said. “But other than that, my groin felt good. My mind was kind of somewhere else, luckily, so I wasn’t worrying about my groin as much.

“Kind of crappy luck, pun intended, with my first game back. My girlfriend is not going to be my chef ever again.”

Bosa is not entirely sure, but he felt like it was some fish that caused him to feel sick. He became dehydrated but was able to make a quick recovery with a six-hour turnaround from kickoff.

“Felt a bit weak,” Bosa said. “There’s a lot of variables going on, so it’s hard to know why I was feeling that way. But I think I was definitely a little run down from being dehydrated and not getting some food in me, and obviously being my first game back, but I thought I felt pretty good, need to get my wind back.”

Bosa added that it felt good to get reps again to build up ahead of the playoffs. He expects to receive more snaps this weekend against the Broncos than he did in Week 17. Then, he should be back up to a full workload when the playoffs start.

“It’s super exciting,” Bosa said on the playoffs. “Last time I was in the playoffs, it was the same deal with my foot injury. But like I said last week, I’m feeling much better this year and much more confident going into these games than I did that year.”

Bosa has been to the playoffs once, back in 2018, when the Chargers beat the Ravens in the Wild Card round but lost to the Patriots in the Divisional round. That year, he had a foot injury that he sustained in training camp, re-injured in Week 1, and didn’t return until Week 11.

The Chargers made a few roster moves ahead of their Week 17 matchup with the Rams.

Los Angeles activated edge defender Joey Bosa from injured reserve. Bosa has been out since Week 3 with a groin injury that he had to have surgery on.

In correspondence, L.A. waived running back Sony Michel to make room for Bosa on the roster.

Additionally, the Chargers promoted RB Larry Rountree and defensive lineman David Moa from the practice squad.

Rountree has appeared in two games this season. In 2021, he rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries.

Moa, a former undrafted free agent out of Boise State, spent time with the Vikings and Falcons before landing in New York, where he played in four games and had three tackles in 2021.

Chargers’ Joey Bosa designated to return from injured reserve

The Chargers’ defense should soon be getting some reinforcement.

The Chargers’ defense should soon be getting some reinforcement.

On Thursday, Los Angeles designated edge defender Joey Bosa for return from injured reserve. Bosa has spent most of the regular season on IR after sustaining a groin injury that required surgery in Week 3.

Bosa can begin practicing with the team as soon as Thursday, opening a 21-day window in which he participates in all team activities without counting against the 53-man roster.

He may be activated during those three weeks, at which point he would be eligible to play in the Bolts’ remaining games, including the playoffs.

Getting the four-time Pro Bowler is enormous for a defense that has finally gotten into stride in the past three games.

During the first two games of the season, Bosa and his partner-in-crime Khalil Mack combined for 5.5 sacks, 20 quarterback pressures, and 13 hurries.

Chargers’ Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack heap praise on each other

Chargers’ Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack discussed what it could mean to be potentially the best pass-rushing tandem in the NFL.

Quarterbacks, the past few seasons, had to worry about Joey Bosa coming off the edge whenever they faced the Chargers. But now, they will have another terror in their faces in Khalil Mack, who was acquired via trade.

Between his time with the Raiders and Bears, Mack has a resume that includes the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year, three All-Pro selections, six Pro Bowl nods, and four straight years with double-digit sacks from 2015 through 2018.

Up to this point in the offseason stage, Mack has been limited as he is coming off a foot injury that forced him to miss the final ten games of the 2021 season. Still, the star-studded edge defenders have steadily been feeding tips to each other.

“It’s amazing. Just to have another guy like that to lean on, to look at,” Bosa said about Mack. “He’s great to talk to. Along with that, he’s obviously an unbelievable player, so having a guy like that on the other side is going to be really fun.”

Bosa added that he has looked up to Mack since he was a young player in the NFL and that their opposite skill sets will complement each other’s perfectly.

Mack will not only benefit from rushing opposite another premier pass rusher but playing for Brandon Staley, who boasts a similar scheme to former head coach Vic Fangio.

The year Staley was outside linebackers coach in Chicago in 2018, Mack enjoyed a solid campaign that year, finishing with 68 pressures, 48 hurries, and 12.5 sacks.

“That’s the thing. Strangely enough, the defensive calls are pretty much all the same. It’s just different wording,” Mack said on the defensive scheme. “Just figuring out the different tangibles as far as what coach Staley and the defensive staff want from myself, first and foremost, making sure I’m able to affect games the way I know how to affect games.”

Mack said it’s going to be very fun playing with Bosa, calling him “very smart,” adding that he’s looking forward to their joint film sessions during the season.

Last season, Los Angeles ranked 19th in pressure rate overall, and on third-and-longs, the team ranked 25th in pressure rate. Now, with Mack’s explosive power and burst and Bosa’s athleticism and hand usage to threaten blockers, these numbers should improve drastically.

Chargers EDGE Joey Bosa ruled out vs. Texans

The Chargers will be without their star pass rusher against the Texans.

The Chargers will be without their star pass rusher this Sunday when they take on the Texans, as Joey Bosa has been ruled out after being placed on the COVID-19 list on Monday, per Brandon Staley.

Bosa, who is unvaccinated, must stay isolated for at least 10 days.

In addition, Kemon Hall is also out for this weekend.

As for the other two players who were added to the COVID-19 list, Corey Linsley and Austin Ekeler, they are considered day-to-day, according to Staley.

With the new NFL protocols, Linsley and Ekeler can use one of three testing options and return if they’re asymptomatic for at least 24 hours.

With Bosa out, Chris Rumph II will likely be the starter opposite Uchenna Nwosu, with Kenneth Murray and Emeke Egbule rotating in.

Watch: Relive Chargers EDGE Joey Bosa’s career game vs. Bills

Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa set personal and team records on Sunday.

Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa was the best player that stepped foot on Bills Stadium on Sunday.

Bosa was a man on a mission, posting arguably his most dominant performance since entering the NFL back in 2016.

The 25-year old had eight tackles, three sacks, five quarterback hits and a fumble recovery.

Even though Los Angeles wasn’t able to pick up the win, he still helped himself by setting a few personal and team records along the way.

Bosa passed Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau for the fifth-most sacks in team history with 47.5. His three sacks were a career-high. He also became the third player to record three sacks, five QB hits, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery in a single game.
