Chargers sign Tyeler Davison, place Christian Covington, Otito Ogbonnia on injured reserve

The Chargers made a few roster moves on Wednesday.

The Chargers made a few roster moves on Wednesday.

Los Angeles signed defensive tackle Tyeler Davison to the active roster from the Browns’ practice squad. In addition, the team signed David Moa to the practice squad.

These acquisitions came after the season-ending injuries to Christian Covington and Otito Ogbonnia, who were placed on the injured reserve.

Davison spent the last three seasons with the Falcons, starting 38 of the 44 games. He had 121 tackles, 1.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery in those appearances.

Moa, a former undrafted free agent out of Boise State, spent time with the Vikings and Falcons before landing in New York, where he played in four games and had three tackles in 2021.

Chargers sign WR Keelan Doss to practice squad

The Chargers now have four wide receivers on their practice squad.

The Chargers have brought a wide receiver home to California.

On Wednesday, the team announced they signed wide receiver Keelan Doss to the practice squad. Doss began his career with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2019 after a standout career at UC Davis and Alameda High School but has also spent time with the Falcons, Jets, and Giants.

In nine career games, Doss has 11 receptions for 133 yards with only one special teams snap. At 6-foot-2, Doss ran a 4.56 40-yard dash at UC Davis’ pro day in 2019, making him a fit for what Los Angeles tends to look for at the position. It seems he may be a potential call-up candidate if Josh Palmer’s injury from Week 4 lingers, considering the other receivers on the roster and practice squad are more slot receiver types.

The Doss signing brings LA’s practice squad to its maximum size of 16, with a potential move required later this week if the Chargers need to add a kicker to replace Dustin Hopkins, who was added to the injury report Wednesday with a quad issue. That could also mean that Doss’ tenure on the Chargers is a short one, as Los Angeles now has four receivers on their practice squad between Doss, Michael Bandy, Joe Reed, and John Hightower.

Chargers sign WR John Hightower to practice squad

The Chargers added a speedy wide receiver.

The Chargers signed wide receiver John Hightower to the practice squad on Wednesday.

As Jalen Guyton’s season has ended due to a torn ACL that he suffered in the Week 3 loss to the Jaguars, Los Angeles had the need for speed, which it filled with Hightower.

Hightower was selected by the Eagles in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He played two seasons for Philadelphia before being released in August. Hightower posted ten receptions for 167 yards in 13 games during his rookie season.

Hightower had 51 catches for 943 yards and eight touchdowns during his final season at Boise State. Hightower was also an excellent kick returner –  finishing with 840 return yards and a touchdown on 36 attempts (23.3 YPR).

Here is what I said about Hightower coming out of college:

While at Hinds Community College in Mississippi, he competed and earned sixth-place in the 400-meter hurdle and in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) outdoor nationals in 2016. On the football field, the track speed is evident, as he hits top speed quickly to blow past press coverage. He shows a nice feel for finding openings in zone coverage. He has great hands with limited drops and the ability to track the deep ball naturally. Often used on screens and sweep plays, Hightower is a threat to break off for a huge play whenever the ball is in his hands.

Chargers sign TE Richard Rodgers, fill out practice squad

The Chargers have filled out their 16-man practice squad.

The Chargers have signed tight end Richard Rodgers to the practice squad.

Rodgers, 30, has played in eight NFL seasons — the first four with the Packers and the last four with the Eagles.

For his career, Rodgers has played in 88 games, including 28 starts, and has 147 receptions for 1,549 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Rodgers takes the last spot on Los Angeles’ practice squad, which now includes:

OL Zack Bailey

WR Michael Bandy

DT Christian Covington

DL Joe Gaziano

CB Kemon Hall

CB Michael Jacquet

TE Hunter Kampmoyer

EDGE Carlo Kemp

S Raheem Layne

LB Tyreek Maddox-Williams

WR Jason Moore

WR Joe Reed

OT Foster Sarell

S Mark Webb Jr.

RB Larry Rountree

TE Richard Rodgers

The Los Angeles Chargers began announcing members of their practice squad on Wednesday, signing the following players:

CB Kemon Hall

CB Michael Jacquet

TE Hunter Kampmoyer

EDGE Carlo Kemp

S Raheem Layne

Teams can have up to 16 players on their practice squad, meaning the Bolts will add two more players in the coming days.

Stay tuned for more information.

Chargers sign WR Joe Reed to Reserve/Future contract

The Chargers have added one more young player to their growing list of players on future contracts

On Tuesday, the Chargers announced that they signed wide receiver Joe Reed to a Reserve/Future deal.

Reed, the team’s fifth-round pick of the 2020 NFL draft, spent this past season on the practice squad/injured reserve list after dealing with an ankle issue that he sustained in training camp.

In his rookie season, Reed appeared in 11 games and carried the ball five times for 29 yards and a touchdown.

By signing Reed to this deal, it gives Los Angeles offensive depth with a gadget player who’s capable of catching and running the football as well as returning kicks.

The Chargers have now signed 12 players to future contracts, as the team previously announced they had signed Michael Bandy, Andre Brown, Cole Christiansen, Ben DeLuca, Emeke Egbule, Maurice Ffrench, Ryan Hunter, Hunter Kampmoyer, Forrest Merrill, Jason Moore, Foster Sarell.

Chargers sign 2 players to practice squad

The Chargers added offensive and defensive line depth.

The Chargers signed offensive tackle Foster Sarell and defensive lineman Andrew Brown to the practice squad. In correspondence, Los Angeles released linebacker Nate Hall, a day after he was added.

Sarell, who was once considered the nation’s top offensive tackle prospect, went undrafted out of Stanford. He signed with the Ravens and spent the summer there before being released. Sarell also spent some time on the Giants’ practice squad.

Brown, on the other hand, was recently released by L.A. before being picked up again.

Brown, a fifth-round pick by the Bengals in 2018, played in 21 games over his first three seasons, 18 with Cincinnati and three with the Texans. He was on the Colts prior to being released ahead of the 2021 season.

In that time period, he posted 17 tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss, and three quarterback hits.

Chargers sign LB Nate Hall to practice squad

In the midst of Drue Tranquill’s injury, the Chargers added some reinforcements.

The Chargers signed linebacker Nate Hall to their 16-man practice squad. To clear up space, the team released defensive lineman Andrew Brown.

After being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cowboys in 2019, Hall bounced around the league, specifically the Bills, Texans, and Panthers.

The move to bring in Hall comes amid Drue Tranquill’s chest injury, which could indicate that he might have to miss this Sunday’s contest against the Ravens.

If so, Los Angeles will then likely promote someone from the practice squad ahead of the matchup.

The linebackers currently on the Bolts’ practice squad aside from Hall are Cole Christiansen and Josh Watson.

Chargers sign 2 players to practice squad

The Chargers made a roster move on Wednesday.

The Chargers signed defensive lineman Andrew Brown and linebacker Josh Watson to the practice squad on Wednesday, the team announced.

After promoting defensive tackles Forrest Merrill and Breiden Fehoko from the practice squad to the active roster, it left two vacant spots.

Watson, on the other hand, played his collegiate career at Colorado State before being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Broncos in 2019. In two seasons, he appeared in 17 games and totaled seven sacks.

Chargers sign WR Maurice Ffrench to practice squad

The Chargers added a special teams standout to the practice squad.

The Chargers signed wide receiver Maurice Ffrench to the practice squad on Wednesday.

Ffrench takes the spot left by WR Joe Reed, who was placed on the injured list.

After going undrafted out of the University of Pittsburgh in 2020, Ffrench signed a rookie contract with the Chiefs and was added to their practice squad.

Following the season, Ffrench signed a reserve/future contract. After the preseason, he was added to the practice squad but ended up being released.

Ffrench never appeared in a regular season game.

Ffrench finished his collegiate career with 156 catches for 1,637 yards and 14 touchdowns in 45 games, while tallying over 600 yards and two touchdowns between punt and kick returns.

He reunites with wide receivers coach Chris Beatty, who held the same position at Pittsburgh during the 2019 season.

The team may look to elevate him to the active roster and give him a shot as a return specialist.
