Panthers sign LB, release another from practice squad

The Panthers made a switch on their practice squad with a pair of linebackers.

The Carolina Panthers were a little busy before hitting the practice field on Thursday.

After announcing the four-year extension for running back Chuba Hubbard this morning, the team officially signed linebacker Jacoby Windmon to their practice squad. Windmon, who spent the prior three weeks as a member of the active roster, was waived on Tuesday.

Carolina signed the 23-year-old rookie defender off the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad back on Oct. 15. Windmon played in the team’s last three games, with all 43 of his snaps coming on special teams.

He recorded one tackle in the Week 7 loss to the Washington Commanders and one tackle in this past Sunday’s win over the New Orleans Saints.

To make room for the return of Windmon, the Panthers released fellow linebacker Chandler Wooten. The departure marks the end of Wooten’s second stint on Carolina’s practice squad in 2024.

Wooten appeared in 20 games for the Panthers dating back to the 2022 campaign.

Panthers sign 2 players back to their practice squad on Wednesday

We have some non-QB news from the Panthers this afternoon . . .

There was actually a bit of non-quarterback news coming out of 800 South Mint Street on a rather eventual Wednesday afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers have announced that they have signed defensive lineman T.J. Smith and inside linebacker Chandler Wooten to their practice squad. Both players were waived from the active roster on Tuesday.

Wooten initially joined the Panthers in 2022, when the team scooped him off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad shortly after the trade of running back Christian McCaffrey. He has since played in 20 games for Carolina, mostly as a special teamer.

Week 7 saw Wooten record 51 defensive snaps, the most in his three seasons as a Panther. He amassed six combined tackles in the 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders.

Smith first signed with Carolina this past spring. The 6-foot-3, 300-pounder would prove to be one of the team’s summer standouts, as he tallied 2.0 sacks over three preseason contests.

He has appeared in three games during the regular season.

Panthers release former 1st-round pick amidst flurry of moves on Tuesday

The Panthers announce a handful of moves on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers are really trying to make things work on defense.

Tuesday afternoon played host to a flurry of moves for the team, as they announced three additions and five departures. Among the five players on the outs is outside linebacker Shaq Lawson, who was signed to the practice squad a few weeks ago.

Lawson, a Central, S.C. native, was selected with the 19th overall pick of the 2016 draft by the Buffalo Bills. The Clemson University product was elevated to the main roster for this past Sunday’s 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders, where he recorded 14 defensive snaps.

Carolina also released fellow pass rusher Marquis Haynes Sr., who has now spent each of his seven NFL campaigns with the Panthers. Haynes Sr. saw action in Week 6 and Week 7, totaling one pressure over 41 snaps.

In addition, the Panthers waived inside linebacker Chandler Wooten and defensive lineman T.J. Smith from the 53-man roster while releasing defensive lineman Jayden Peevy from the practice squad.

Those moves helped make room for the signings of defensive lineman Jonathan Harris and outside linebacker Cam Gill to the active roster and rookie center Andrew Raym to the practice squad.

Panthers officially announce 2 signings on Tuesday

The Panthers announced a pair of signings on Tuesday.

The battered Carolina Panthers defense is getting some backup.

On Tuesday, the team officially announced a pair of signings. One of the moves will see linebacker Chandler Wooten go from the practice squad to the active roster in light of the injuries to starters Shaq Thompson and Josey Jewell.

Thompson’s season ended after he tore his Achilles tendon in the Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals while Jewell is expected to miss some time due to hamstring and groin issues.

Carolina’s defense has already been without Pro Bowl defensive lineman Derrick Brown, who saw his 2024 cut short after tearing his meniscus in the season-opening defeat to the New Orleans Saints. Fellow defensive lineman Shy Tuttle and safety Jordan Fuller, two other Week 1 starters, have been sidelined recently as well.

Wooten played in 17 games for the Panthers between the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Along with Wooten, the Panthers also signed cornerback Caleb Farley—who joins the team’s practice squad. Farley, a former Tennessee Titan, was selected with the 22nd overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft.

Panthers 2024 initial practice squad tracker

Follow along as we track each of the Panthers’ additions to their initial 2024 practice squad

Yesterday wasn’t the only instance of heavy construction that we’ll see this week.

On Tuesday, NFL teams cut ties and made moves on over 1,000 players in shaping their initial 53-man rosters for the 2024 campaign. Some of those players will find their ways back on to other active rosters and even more will return to a locker room as practice-squad players.

As soon as the activity on Wednesday’s waiver wire is through, those who are not claimed can be signed to practice squads—often a 16-man group used as depth for practice sessions, scout work and emergency game situations.

Now, there’s little question as to if the Carolina Panthers and general manager Dan Morgan will be busy today. Morgan, on a few occasions, hasn’t been shy to flex the advantage of having the league’s very top spot on the waiver wire.

But when that work is through, we’ll need to shift our focus right to the taxi squad.

So, keep it here as we track each of the team’s additions to their initial practice squad for 2024 . . .

Panthers 2024 roster cuts tracker

Keep it here as we track each move the Panthers make in getting to their initial 53-man roster

Despite the difficult decisions that lie ahead, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales isn’t shying away from the challenge of getting down to his very first 53-man roster.

“Yeah, it’s hard. And I’m excited for it,” he told reporters after last Wednesday’s practice. “When you respect and regard the whole unit and you’re kinda bringing everybody up at the same time—with the teaching, with the practices, the drill work and all those things as we improve everyone—it makes the decisions harder and harder.

“So I’m really excited about doing this with Dan [Morgan], with Brandt [Tilis], with the coaching staff. We’ve kinda had our touch-points throughout camp to evaluate where we’re at right now, and then we’ll have that culmination after we get through this last game.”

Well, they got through that game—besting the host Buffalo Bills in their final preseason outing of the summer on Saturday. So now, the “excitement” begins.

Keep it here, from now until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, as we track each of the team’s moves in the path to their initial 53-man roster for the 2024 season.

Panthers QB Bryce Young talks about skirmishes from Tuesday’s practice

The Panthers revved up the intensity at a contentious practice on Tuesday.

This summer’s introduction of the pads certainly gave way to some increased physicality for the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday. (And that’s kind of putting it mildly.) Nonetheless, it’s all a part of the process.

Quarterback Bryce Young talked about this morning’s session, the very first padded practice for the team this training camp.

“The pads, obviously, they bring out more intensity,” he told reporters. “It gets more physical. We wanna clean some stuff up. We’re still family at the end of the day. When we go to the locker room, we’re brothers. But it gets competitive out there.

“Obviously, there were a couple of things that happened on the field, and it’s part of the game. We leave it out here. We don’t want it to happen in the future. But we’re competing.”

The Panthers left a few skirmishes out on that field today. Some of the contentious action featured running backs Chuba Hubbard, pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, offensive lineman Cade Mays and linebacker Chandler Wooten.

But, as they say—it’s iron sharpening iron.

Panthers keep 7 players out of Tuesday’s walk-through

OLB Brian Burns and CB CJ Henderson were among the seven Panthers kept out of Tuesday’s walk-through session.

Meet Tuesday’s injury report, same as Monday’s injury report.

Rather than a prototypical practice, the Carolina Panthers had themselves a walk-through for the second straight afternoon ahead of their Thursday night showdown against the Chicago Bears. And, save for linebacker Chandler Wooten, we have ourselves a carbon copy of the injury report from yesterday:

Injury Monday Tuesday Wednesday Game status

Wooten was placed on injured reserve earlier this morning due to the ankle injury he sustained in Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Tight end Jordan Matthews was brought up from the practice squad to fill Wooten’s spot on the active roster.

Panthers sign Jordan Matthews to active roster

After sending LB Chandler Wooten to IR, the Panthers have signed TE Jordan Matthews to their active roster.

The Carolina Panthers made a handful of moves official on Tuesday morning—which included sending yet another linebacker, Chandler Wooten, to injured reserve. So, they had an open spot to fill.

That spot, as announced by the team, now goes to tight end Jordan Matthews—who has been signed from the practice squad.

Matthews, a standout at Vanderbilt University, broke into the NFL as a second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2014. It’d be there, in his final season with the franchise in 2016, where he’d cross paths with current Panthers head coach Frank Reich—who was in his first year as the Eagles offensive coordinator.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder has amassed eight pro seasons—picking up additional stops with the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers. He’s recorded 274 receptions for 3,288 yards and 22 touchdowns over 76 games.

To fill Matthews’ vacancy on the practice squad, the Panthers have brought back linebacker Ayinde “Ace” Eley—who spent the summer with the team as an undrafted free-agent signee.
