Final Panthers’ 53-man roster projection heading into 2023 regular season

For one last time this summer, here is our projection for the Carolina Panthers’ initial 53-man roster.

Did Friday night’s preseason finale do much to change our outlook for the Carolina Panthers’ initial 53-man roster?

Here is our final projection of the program:

Stock up, stock down from Panthers’ preseason loss to Jets

A few Panthers linebackers improved their stock in the team’s preseason opener against the Jets.

This may be difficult to believe, but a few Carolina Panthers players improved their cases in the team’s 27-0 preseason loss to the New York Jets. Oh, and there were also definitely a few who didn’t.

Here’s our stock report from Saturday’s action:

Best and worst PFF grades from Panthers’ preseason opener vs. Jets

As expected, PFF was not too kind to the Panthers’ hog mollies for their showing on Saturday.

So, how on Earth did Pro Football Focus grade the Carolina Panthers in their extremely lackluster preseason opener?

Well, let’s take a look . . . if you dare . . .

‘Madden NFL 24’ ratings for Panthers middle linebackers revealed

The Panthers are a bit little in middle throughout these “Madden NFL 24” ratings.

Unfortunately for the league’s middle linebackers, the quarterbacks—as usual—commanded the spotlight during Friday’s “Madden NFL 24” ratings reveals. So, we’ll let ’em shine a little here.

Check out the marks for the Carolina Panthers’ backers:

2 Panthers out of Wednesday’s practice ahead of Week 18 matchup vs. Saints

The Panthers held DT Matt Ioannidis and LB Chandler Wooten out of Wednesday’s practice.

The Carolina Panthers’ final Wednesday injury report of the 2022 season, thankfully, came out a bit light.

Headlining the afternoon’s chart was defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis, who was held out of practice due to a back injury. The seventh-year veteran has

started and played in 13 games for Carolina this year—totaling 37 combined tackles (five for a loss), 1.0 sack, nine quarterback hits, a forced fumble and a pass defensed.

Also out, with an ankle issue, was linebacker Chandler Wooten. Wooten, who has been used exclusively on special teams, was signed off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad back on Oct. 18. He has recorded 145 snaps, an assisted tackle and a forced fumble—which came in the Week 9 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Here’s the report in its entirety:

Injury Wednesday Thursday Friday Game status
DT Matt Ioannidis Back DNP
TE Stephen Sullivan Elbow Limited
LB Chandler Wooten Ankle DNP
LB Joel Iyiegbuniwe Hamstring Limited
OT Taylor Moton Rest DNP

Auburn Morning Rush: Tigers player signs with Panthers, Auburn practice gets visitor

A former Auburn football player gets another shot on this edition of the Morning Rush:

Happy Wednesday, Auburn fans — it’s Morning Rush day.

Well, every weekday is Morning Rush day, but that doesn’t mean we here at Auburn Wire don’t have some new tidbits for you. Today, a former Auburn linebacker gets signed to another team in the NFL and will remain in the NFC, the basketball team gets a visitor at practice with plenty of head coaching experience (and the team also killed in on social media reactions last year, apparently) and one of Auburn’s men’s golfers was recognized in the national rankings for individual collegiate golfers this year.

Without further adieu, here is your Auburn Morning Rush:

Panthers signing LB Chandler Wooten from Cardinals’ practice squad

The undrafted rookie linebacker out of Auburn impressed during the preseason.

Undrafted rookie linebacker Chandler Wooten impressed people in the preseason and has been on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad all season. That changes as he is signing with the Carolina Panthers to their active roster.

Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson reported the signing.

He signed with the Cardinals this offseason as an undrafted rookie out of Auburn. The 6-3, 232-lb linebacker now gets an opportunity with the struggling Panthers.

The Cardinals will likely announce a signing to fill his vacancy on the practice squad Tuesday.

Panthers to sign LB Chandler Wooten off Cardinals’ practice squad

He didn’t come over via the Robbie Anderson trade, but LB Chandler Wooten is headed from the Cardinals to the Panthers.

On Monday, the Carolina Panthers traded wide receiver Robbie Anderson away to the Arizona Cardinals for a small package of future draft compensation—a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 seventh-round pick. But that’s not all they got from them.

Later on that night, Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network reported that the Panthers are set to sign linebacker Chandler Wooten off the Cardinals’ practice squad. The rookie defender will now, as a result of the poaching, join Carolina’s active roster.

Wooten signed with Arizona this past spring as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn University. He spent five years as a Tiger—registering 137 total tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery over 32 games between 2017 and 2021.

The 6-foot-3, 232-pounder has not played in an NFL regular season game, but did pick up time in three outings during exhibition play. In 99 snaps, Wooten recorded 12 tackles (four for stops) while allowing six receptions for 59 yards on eight targets, per Pro Football Focus.

Cardinals releasing LB Chandler Wooten, hope to bring back to practice squad

The undrafted rookie had a strong preseason and the team hopes to bring him back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The Arizona Cardinals and the rest of the NFL must trim their rosters down to 53 players by Tuesday afternoon. Some Cardinals cuts have already been announced and other reported.

One of the young players who stood out in the preseason will not make the team.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals are releasing linebacker Chandler Wooten, an undrafted rookie out of Auburn.

Wooten played well in the preseason and, if he clears waivers, the Cardinals intend on re-signing him to the practice squad.

It was going to be difficult for him to make the final roster. The Cardinals currently have five players at linebacker who are likely locks for the roster — Isaiah Simmons, Zaven Collins, Nick Vigil. Tanner Vallejo and Zeke Turner.

Simmons, Collins and Vigil are starters. Vallejo was a starter last year and is a player the coaches trust a lot. Turner is an ace special teams player who has some of the versatility defensively that Simmons has.

But he clearly still has a future if he isn’t claimed off waivers. If he is brought back to the practice squad, he will get to continue to develop and perhaps have an opportunity later this season or in future seasons.

Colby Wooden has high confidence in Auburn’s defense

Auburn defensive end Colby Wooden believes that Auburn’s defense could be the best in the SEC this season.

Auburn junior defensive end [autotag]Colby Wooden[/autotag], like every member of the 2022 roster, has seen the lack of confidence that the media has in Auburn, as they voted the Tigers to finish last in the SEC West during SEC Media Days last month.

“We aren’t going to say too much about it, and we are going to handle it on the field,” Wooden said during a recent interview with Auburn Undercover. “I can definitely say the camaraderie and brotherhood definitely got better this offseason dealing with everything we have dealt with. We are ready to show that.”

The locker room seems to be more invested in head coach Bryan Harsin as he begins year two on the Plains, which looks to translate to the field. Wooden says that Auburn’s defense could be the best in the conference, and says that they have the units to confirm the claim.

“We have me and [autotag]Marcus Harris[/autotag] returning. We added a big presence with [autotag]Jayson Jones[/autotag] (transfer from Oregon). We have [autotag]Derick Hall[/autotag] and [autotag]Eku Leota[/autotag] coming off the edge, two very good pass rushers,” Wooden says. “I don’t see why we can’t the best and most dominant SEC group.”

Wooden enters his fourth season on the Plains in 2022, carrying 107 total tackles with him. He comes into 2022 as the team’s leading returning tackler, as he made 61 stops, 8.5 being for loss. He was fourth on Auburn’s defensive leaderboard behind [autotag]Zakoby McClain[/autotag], [autotag]Chandler Wooten[/autotag], and [autotag]Smoke Monday[/autotag].
