The return of college football is quickly approaching, folks. After yet another national championship winning season, Nick Saban and company will be looking for a repeat performance in 2021.

Despite key losses, the Crimson Tide is well positioned to do just that.

The opening week matchup is against the Miami Hurricanes in Atlanta, Ga. set for Sept. 4. And with it now being July 1, we are now only 65 days away from the start of the season!

True freshman offensive tackle JC Latham, a five-star out of IMG Academy in Florida, now wears the No. 65 for Alabama. At 6-foot-6, 325 pounds, Latham is a much different build than some of the other hogs who wore the number before him.

Deonte Brown, 6-4, 350 pound interior offensive lineman, wore it for the five previous seasons dating back to 2016. Before him, it was former first-round NFL draft pick Chance Warmack, who wore it from 2009-12.

Both of those guys wound up playing on the NFL, and many expect Latham to carry the torch and follow in their footsteps. In fact, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him have a better NFL career than either of those other two.

Seahawks release OG Chance Warmack without him playing a down

The Seattle Seahawks have released offensive guard Chance Warmack without him ever playing a down for them after he sat out the 2020 season.

The Seattle Seahawks have released offensive guard Chance Warmack after one year in which he never saw the field. The move was reflected on Monday’s official NFL transactions list.

Warmack opted out of the 2020 season due to his apprehension about the COVID-19 pandemic and the effect it would have on the NFL. Several of his peers did the same, but Seattle ended the season without a single player testing positive for the virus.

Warmack’s contract would have carried over into 2021, but the release makes it obsolete. The Seahawks will need solid offensive linemen to protect Russell Wilson next season, but they only possess five picks in the 2021 draft and not much cap space, so acquiring them is easier said than done.

NFL, NFLPA set deadline for players to opt out for COVID-19 concerns

The NFL and the NFLPA have officially agreed to the deadline for players to opt out of the 2020 season for COVID-19 concerns.

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have now settled all remaining issues related to the Collective Bargaining Agreement “side letter,” which details how to go forward with the 2020 season in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

One of the major sticking points for the two sides was the deadline for players to opt out of the season due to COVID-19 concerns. That deadline has now been set and agreed upon, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Players must give notice of their intention to opt out of the year by Thursday, Aug. 6 at 1:00 p.m. PT.

Pelissero also noted that there are two specified situations during which a player may opt out after the deadline. The first involves a player receiving a new high-risk diagnosis and the second scenario relates to the death, hospitalization or treatment of a family member as a result of a coronavirus-related condition.

As of this post, over 50 players around the NFL have already confirmed they will be opting out of the 2020 season. Guard Chance Warmack is the first and only Seahawk to opt out so far.

Guard Chance Warmack only Seahawk to opt out of season so far

Guard Chance Warmack is the only Seattle Seahawk to officially opt out of the 2020 season due to coronavirus concerns so far.

The Seattle Seahawks have been fairly lucky though the first week of training camp, with only one player officially opting out of the season due to coronavirus concerns. Guard Chance Warmack, who Seattle signed as a free agent just this spring, will sit the season out.

Players who are high-risk opt-outs will receive a $350,000 stipend and voluntarily opt-outs will net $150,000 as a salary advance on their existing contracts.

Per the USA TODAY’s tracker, here are the players from each team around the league known to have opted out of the season so far.

Report: Dont’a Hightower will opt out of the 2020 season

Former Alabama linebacker Dont’a Hightower has chosen to opt of out the 2020 season due to COVID-19, according to a report.

First, it was former Alabama offensive guard Chance Warmack, who was with the Seattle Seahawks. Now, it’s former linebacker Dont’a Hightower, who has been a staple on the New England Patriots defense for quite some time.

Adam Schefter with ESPN first reported the news via his Twitter account on Tuesday morning:

It’s yet another big blow to the Patriots, as several players have chosen to opt out this season.

The Patriots have been especially hit hard at linebacker, however. Earlier this offseason, Jamie Collins (Detroit Lions) and Kyle Van Noy (Miami Dolphins) both chose to head in a different direction, which means New England will be without its entire linebacker corp from the 2019 season.

And that doesn’t even include former MVP Tom Brady leaving for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Hightower is one of the most well-respected players in the New England locker room. He has been a captain for the majority of his career, and he’s been an outstanding player representing the organization — both on and off the field.

Last season, the 6-foot-3, 260-pound linebacker had 60 total tackles, 5.5 sacks and four pass deflections.

Former Alabama OL Chance Warmack to opt out of 2020 NFL season

Former Alabama OL Chance Warmack has made the decision to opt out of the 2020 NFL season due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Former Alabama offensive lineman Chance Warmack has decided that he will not be playing in the 2020 NFL season, taking advantage of the NFL’s offer to allow players to opt out of the season if they do not feel comfortable playing due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The news was originally reported on by NFL Network reporter, Mike Garafolo.

A source close to Warmack, who asked to remain unnamed, disclosed that there former Alabama star has had a close family friend pass away due to complications with the virus and has seen other family and friends hospitalized after contracting it.

Warmack, the No. 10 overall selection in the 2013 NFL draft, has played for the Tennessee Titans and Philadelphia Eagles in his career, he had just recently signed with his current team, the Seattle Seahawks.

The 2020 season will be his second consecutive season off the field, after he sat out all of 2019 in order to get healthy.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on Warmack and other former Alabama players in the NFL!

Seahawks guard Chance Warmack opts out of 2020 season

Seahawks guard Chance Warmack’s comeback will be delayed for another year as he will opt out of the 2020 season due to coronavirus concerns.

Newly-signed Seattle Seahawks guard Chance Warmack, who had hoped to make a comeback in 2020 after sitting out the 2019 season, will wait one more year before taking a snap in training camp.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network announced on Monday that Warmack would be opting out of the 2020 season amid concerns about the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Warmack’s contract, a one-year deal worth $1,047,500, will roll over to 2021. He will receive a stipend of $150,000, as dictated by the agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA.

With this announcement, Warmack becomes the third NFL player who has opted out before the Aug. 3 deadline, joining Chiefs guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Ravens wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas.

The loss of Warmack, along with cornerback Quinton Dunbar’s placement on the Commissioner Exempt List, means that the Seahawks suddenly have a roster spot to fill in order to reach this year’s training camp maximum of 80.

Is this the last chance for offensive lineman Ethan Pocic?

The 2017 NFL draft has been full of duds, including offensive lineman Ethan Pocic. Is it time for the Seattle Seahawks to cut bait?

The Seattle Seahawks’ 2017 NFL draft class is not shaping up to be one of their best.

Pro Bowl corner Shaquill Griffin was a strong pick in the third round, and the team used their second seventh round pick on Chris Carson, but outside of those two picks the class as a whole has disappointed.

Malik McDowell, Amara Darboh, Nazair Jones, and Tedric Thompson are among the early round picks who either never suited up for Seattle, or are no longer with the club thanks to poor performances.

David Moore, Lano Hill, and Ethan Pocic are still with the team, but all three of them could be roster casualties if they don’t prove they deserve another chance during the 2020 season.

Pocic was the first one selected of the group, coming to the Seahawks as a late second round pick. The versatile offensive lineman only played in four games last year, starting one and appearing in 91 total offensive snaps before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

All told, Pocic has appeared in 30 games for the Seahawks, playing every position on the line except left tackle. That versatility is what made him appealing to Seattle in the first place, but his performance thus far has not been enough for him to earn a starting role.

Heading into year four, the door may look more open after the team’s release of D.J. Fluker and Justin Britt, two starters from last year’s line, but the addition of free agents B.J. Finney and Chance Warmack and the selection of hulking guard Damien Lewis in the draft seem to indicate the team is going in a different direction.

Lewis, Finney and Warmack will compete with a host of other interior offensive linemen, including Jordan Simmons, Mike Iupati, Phil Haynes, Joey Hunt and Jordan Roos, for spots on the offensive line in 2020.

Pocic’s best chance of making the roster is at backup center, where Finney is expected to start. He’ll be in direct competition with Hunt, the team’s backup center since 2016, and could face competition from Kyle Fuller and Haynes, who played some center in practice last year.

Pocic could theoretically challenge for a backup spot at tackle as well, where there is considerably less depth, but considering his best performances (which still aren’t great) have been on the interior, it’s unlikely he’d have what it takes to make it at that spot either.

The big question is if Seattle is willing to move on from a second round pick this quickly into his career, but considering the recent move to release both Jones (third round) and Thompson (fourth round) it might be time to cut bait on Pocic and admit that, outside of Griffin, Moore, and Carson, the 2017 draft just didn’t get the job done in the Emerald City.
