Mel Kiper, Todd McShay project familiar names to Giants in latest mock draft

In the latest rotating mock draft from ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, the New York Giants land some familiar names early on.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay released a rotating three-round mock draft on Tuesday and in it, the New York Giants end up with some familiar names early on.

With pick No. 5 overall, they project NC State offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu to the Giants over both Evan Neal and Charles Cross.

Andrew Thomas looked better in 2021, but the Giants still need a tackle opposite him — and the best one in the class is still here at No. 5. New GM Joe Schoen would be sprinting to turn in the pick card if the board fell this way.

After the Carolina Panthers take Liberty quarterback Malik Willis, the Giants are back on the clock at No. 7. Unfortunately, Aidan Hutchinson, Travon Walker and Kayvon Thibodeaux are all off the board, leaving New York with Florida State edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II.

Hutchinson, Walker and Thibodeaux went 1-2-3, but Johnson is also worthy of a top-10 pick, and the Giants have a glaring issue at edge rusher. This would be a great start to the draft for the Giants, checking off a pair of boxes with their first two picks.

When things circle back to the Giants at No. 36 overall, Kiper has them addressing the safety position with Penn State’s Jalen Pitre.

If the Giants address their offensive and defensive lines with picks Nos. 5 and 7, they can move on to find a safety or linebacker here. Pitre is physical against the run and has some range in coverage.

In Round 3 (pick No. 67 overall), McShay and Kiper have the first new name going to the Giants that we’ve seen in a while: Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma.

With Blake Martinez coming off a torn ACL, why not get some insurance at inside linebacker? Muma tied for the FBS lead in tackles last season (125).

Finally, the Giants select UTSA cornerback Tariq Woolen at No. 81 overall.

I love this guy’s traits. Woolen is a former receiver who is still learning the cornerback position, but he ran a 4.26 in the 40-yard dash at the combine at 6-foot-4. Tack on the explosion demonstrated by a 42-inch vertical jump and some incredible 33 5/8-inch length, and you have someone who could develop into a star with time.

And that does it for the latest rotating mock draft from Kiper and McShay. How would you feel about this haul, Giants fans? Let us know in the comments below.

7-round NFL mock draft for the Denver Broncos

Our first seven-round NFL mock draft for the Broncos has the team going LB, OT, RB with their first three picks.

The 2022 NFL draft will be held next week, which means mock draft season is heating up! Here is Broncos Wire’s first attempt at mocking Denver’s plans for this year’s draft.

Commanders nail first 2 picks in new PFF 3-round mock draft

The Commanders address arguably their two biggest needs in this new PFF mock draft.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbykgy681k112p8 player_id=none image=https://washingtonfootballwire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

After the offseason trade for quarterback Carson Wentz, one would argue the Washington Commanders’ two most significant needs are at wide receiver and inside linebacker.

Some will continue to believe quarterback remains a massive need with Wentz’s issues at his last two stops. However, for 2022 at least, this is Wentz’s team, and Washington’s goal is to build around the quarterback to help him succeed, rather than selecting another passer.

In a new mock draft by Pro Football Focus where Seth Galina does a three-round mock for all four NFC East teams, Wentz gets some help at No. 11 overall in the form of USC wide receiver Drake London.

London would fill a big hole opposite Terry McLaurin. With McLaurin already an established No. 1 wideout, London would be the ideal complement to McLaurin. And if the Commanders can get a healthy Curtis Samuel back in 2022, the wide receiver position suddenly becomes a position of strength.

PFF on London:

Curtis Samuel will return to Washington next season, but after putting most of their eggs in the Wentz basket, the Commanders need to surround him with even more receiving talent. Drake London will play outside opposite Terry McLaurin while Samuel plays on the inside. London is not the same type of receiver as McLaurin, but he does provide Washington with another player who can make contested catches. McLaurin led the league in contested catches last season as a 6-foot, 208-pound receiver. London led the FBS in contested catches as a 6-foot-4, 219-pound receiver, as the USC product excels at high-pointing contested passeses.

With how erratic Wentz can be, receivers who can make receptions outside their frame and in contested situations are key. McLaurin is the speed, acrobat type of receiver while London is the big-bodied, jump ball receiver.

PFF makes a wise assumption in its assessment of Wentz being erratic. London is the 2022 NFL draft’s No. 1 contested-catch wideout, while McLaurin was No. 1 in the NFL in contested catches in 2021.

In the second round at No. 47 overall, PFF mocks Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma to Washington. After selecting Jamin Davis in the first round last season, it’s doubtful the Commanders would look to select another linebacker in round one, ruling out someone like Devin Lloyd or Nakobe Dean.

PFF on Muma:

The Commanders linebacker room is a mess, so taking the super productive Chad Muma is a step in the right direction. His athletic traits stand out, which was confirmed when he tested at a high level in multiple disciplines. His bench press, vertical jump, broad jump and three-cone time were all above the 85th percentile among linebackers.

Muma, at No. 47, would be an ideal pick for Washington. An athletic, productive and instinctive playmaker, Muma can immediately help the Commanders at inside linebacker. A combination of Muma, Davis and Cole Holcomb would give Washington plenty of speed and athleticism at linebacker.

10 hybrid defenders that could interest the Eagles in the 2022 NFL draft

10 hybrid defenders that could interest Jonathan Gannon and the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2022 NFL draft

The Eagles have an ever-evolving defensive scheme, and if Jonathan Gannon had it his way, he’d probably employ a 4-1-6 base defense with six defensive backs and one hybrid linebacker who can cover.

Philadelphia will look to increase pressure off the edge with the acquisition of Haason Reddick, and they’ll be quicker at linebacker after the addition of Kyzir White.

The days of three linebackers on the field are all but over and as the Eagles work to stop some of the NFL’s most explosive offenses, we’ve highlighted 10 hybrid defenders who can do it all.

2022 NFL draft: The top 11 linebackers

Touchdown Wire’s breakdown of the top prospects in the 2022 draft moves to the off-ball linebackers.

Last year, it was Elijah Molden.

This year, it is the entire linebacker class.

As I wrote last year in the write-up of Molden, the current defensive back for the Tennessee Titans, studying him late in the process rekindled my own love of the game of football. Late in the draft cycle, as the work was winding down, studying the way he patrolled the secondary for Washington reminded me of an old college teammate, and the beauty of this sport.

This year something similar happened, when I sat down to study the linebackers for this draft cycle.

Whether Nakobe Dean’s play speed, Devin Lloyd’s length and disruptive nature, the awareness of Chad Muma, the potential of Troy Andersen or even the change-of-direction skills of JoJo Domann, this group of players was fascinating to study. Even those that did not make this list, such as Brandon Smith from Penn State, are going to be great pro players.

Perhaps what we are seeing is the cyclical response to a similar process that is playing out on the offensive side of the football. The depth of this year’s class of receivers — another fun position to study — is perhaps due to the importance of the passing game at all levels of the sport. With an emphasis on throwing the football taking place at the high school level, and the growth of spring passing leagues, receivers are coming out of college ready to go.

Is it possible we are seeing something happen with linebackers?

While that might be an article for another day, let’s get to the top 11 linebackers in the 2022 NFL draft.

ESPN’s 7-round NFL mock draft would be a dream scenario for Broncos

This mock draft has OT Bernhard Raimann falling to the Broncos in the 2nd round, followed by ILB Chad Muma and OLB Nik Bonitto in the 3rd round.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid recently published a complete seven-round 2022 NFL mock draft (subscription required for link), including all eight picks for the Denver Broncos.

With their first pick in Reid’s mock, the Broncos select Central Michigan offensive tackle Bernhard Raimann at No. 64 overall. This would be a dream scenario for Denver because Raimann falling to the bottom of the second round would be a surprise.

The Broncos get another gem in the third round when Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma falls to them at No. 75. Denver landing Raimann and Muma without having to make any trades would be a great start to the draft.

After that, the Broncos land Oklahoma edge defender Nik Bonitto, which would represent another smart value selection at No. 96 overall.

To finish out the draft, Denver selects Fayetteville State cornerback Joshua Williams (No. 115), BYU running back Tyler Allgeier (No. 116), Tennessee defensive back Alontae Taylor (No. 145), Florida offensive tackle Jean Delance (No. 206) and Iowa safety Dane Belton (No. 232).

This would be a fantastic draft for the Broncos as it would fill the biggest needs of OT, ILB, OLB, RB and CB with excellent candidates.

The first five picks alone would make this mock an A+ class. To view the complete seven-round mock draft, visit ESPN (subscription required).

Broncos big board: Top 39 players for Denver in NFL draft

Here are some names to know as the Broncos prepare for the NFL draft.

Broncos Wire has identified defensive line, right tackle, inside linebacker, cornerback, running back, tight end and outside linebacker as the seven primary needs for the Denver Broncos in the 2022 NFL draft.

To give fans an early look at some of the top prospects at those positions, we’ve put together a list of 38 players who might be available for the Broncos during the draft (plus one more bonus player).

Keep in mind that many of the top first-round prospects in the draft did not make this list because they are unlikely to fall to Denver in the bottom of the second round, where the Broncos are scheduled to make their first pick.

Here are some of the top names to know as the draft approaches, sorted by position.

Lions 2022 draft: A linebacker for every round

It’s a fantastic LB draft class, arguably the deepest crop of talent at any position in this entire draft

The next position in the “prospect for every round of the 2022 NFL draft” series for the Detroit Lions is a popular one: Linebacker. And it’s a fantastic draft class to need one, arguably the deepest crop of talent at any position in this entire draft.

With the team’s all-time leading tackler, former starting LB Chris Spielman, as part of the decision-making team in the front office, it’s easy to see the Lions looking intently at the linebacker class. An upgrade to the corps would certainly be a welcome addition.

There isn’t much room on the roster, however. The Lions brought back Alex Anzalone, Josh Woods and Shaun Dion Hamilton and also signed free agents Chris Board and Jarrad Davis. They join Barnes, who the team is counting on to make a big step forward in his second season. For a team that will primarily have just two LBs on the field, that’s a lot of investment for 2022 already. And the coaching staff sincerely likes them all, too.

Lions 2022 NFL draft: A safety for every round

Lions 2022 NFL draft: A quarterback for every round

Lions 2022 NFL draft: A wide receiver for every round

Lions 2022 NFL draft: A tight end for every round

Note: These are off-ball LBs, not players whose primary role will be rushing the passer. Think of them as inside LBs, though in the new-look 4-man front they will also be charged with making plays outside the tackle box and covering tight ends and RBs near the line of scrimmage.

As with the rest of the entries in this series, the purpose here isn’t to advocate for any one player. Instead, it’s designed to show the relative talent level that should be available in different rounds of the draft. The Lions do not currently have a fourth-round pick, so consider that entry here as the team’s pick at No. 97 at the end of the third round.

Full 7-round Eagles mock draft post-blockbuster trade with the Saints

2022 NFL draft: Philadelphia Eagles add more talent on defense in full seven-round mock post blockbuster trade with the New Orleans Saints

The Eagles once again shook up the NFL draft boards after a blockbuster trade that saw general manager Howie Roseman trade pick No. 16, No. 19, and No. 194 to the Saints for pick No. 18, No. 101, No. 237, a 2023 first-round pick, and a 2024 second-rounder as well.

Philadelphia now has two first-round picks in 2022, an extra third-round picks in 2022, along with pushing a first-round pick back to 2023 and also accumulating an extra second-round pick in 2022.

With the moves made, here’s an updated Eagles-only seven-round mock draft via Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator, that’ll likely see the Birds still land players that were on their board.
