CFP, Super Bowl championship on menu for Harbaugh brothers

The Harbaugh Bros. are on quite the roll

They have already met in a Super Bowl. Now, there is a chance — a good one — the Harbaugh Bros. could win the CFP Championship and NFL championship game in 2024.

Jim Harbaugh and his Michigan Wolverines will play for the national championship on Jan. 8 in Houston.

The Wolverines won the Rose Bowl, a CFP semifinal, on Monday. They defeated Alabama, 27-20, in overtime.

Brother John was busy over the weekend, too, as his Baltimore Ravens earned the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a 56-19 trampling of the Miami Dolphins.

The Ravens are the favorite to win Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas in February.

Combined, the Wolverines and Ravens have a 27-3 record this season,

When John Harbaugh’s Ravens met Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII, Baltimore came away with a 34-31 victory.

America reacts to Alabama’s final play call as Crimson Tide lose CFP semifinal to Michigan

Alabama lost the CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game to Michigan in heartbreaking fashion, and America had a lot to say about that last play.

The Alabama Crimson Tide had the ball at the Michigan Wolverines’ three-yard line on fourth down, hoping to tie the CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl Game at 27 in overtime. But a bad snap to Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe forced Milroe to run into the teeth of Michigan’s defense, Milroe got just one yard to the two-yard line, and Michigan advanced to the championship game next Monday.

From the snap to the run, everybody had a lot of thoughts about how that play went… and what happened.

Top ’24 QB Dylan Raiola: ‘Georgia is the cream of the crop’

Raiola was on-hand at SoFi Stadium to watch the game.

Georgia is on top of the college football world again, having crushed TCU in the national championship game 65-7 to win their second-straight title. The CFP championship game always brings out a lot of interesting characters. One, in particular, was impressed by how the Bulldogs do things.

That would be the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2024, Chandler (Ariz.) quarterback Dylan Raiola – who recently decommitted from Ohio State. Raiola was on-hand at SoFi Stadium to watch the game. Here’s what he had to say about it, per 247 Sports.

“Georgia is the cream of the crop! They do everything with such class and they do everything the right way! The fans are awesome! So passionate about the Dawgs and I love it… Coach Smart built something special for college football. He went to Georgia and that means a lot to him to build that place! It’s such a special place and I can’t wait to get back to Athens.”

Raiola told 247Sports he has no official visit scheduled for Georgia as of yet. They are one of 25 schools that have extended him an offer.

5 takeaways from Alabama’s heartbreaking championship loss to Georgia

5 takeaways from Alabama’s heartbreaking championship loss to Georgia

You win some and you lose some. Unfortunately, for Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, the loss came in the College Football Playoff national championship game at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs 33-18.

The score isn’t a true indicator of how close the game truly was from start to finish. Both teams traded blows for the majority of the contest, but the Bulldogs took over late in the fourth quarter and iced the game with a pick-six off of Bryce Young.

As we drown in our sorrows, let’s take a look at five of the takeaways from Alabama’s heartbreaking loss.

Nick Saban and his medical team wouldn’t allow Jameson Williams to play despite his desire to return; cites future in NFL as reasoning

Jameson Williams wanted to play in the 2nd half despite his injury, Saban and his medical team wouldn’t allow it, citing his future NFL career as the primary reason.

Alabama lost, but it doesn’t feel like the end of the world, at least in my household.

The Crimson Tide accomplished far more than I thought possible this season, especially following the loss in College Station to Texas A&M.

But, among the confetti, a future NFL draft pick named Jameson Williams watched on. Williams cemented his future in the NFL after transferring to Alabama from Ohio State this season. It turned out to be one of the best decisions he’s ever made.

In his only year at the Capstone, Williams proved himself to be a dangerous weapon on the offensive side of the ball. He caught 75 passes for 1,507 yards this season and 15 touchdowns in his only season playing for Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide.

During the national championship game, Williams suffered an injury that looked scary, but he managed to find his footing on his own weight as he walked gingerly to the locker room prior to halftime.

However, after suffering the injury, Williams reportedly wanted to play in the second half despite the injury. Saban refused to allow that to happen, and in his press conference following the game, he explained the situation.

Saban explained that Williams requested to go out and play in the second half, but the medical team wouldn’t allow it to happen. He mentioned Williams’ future in the reasoning behind not allowing him to return to the field.

It’s clear that Saban and his team have and have always had the best interests of his student-athletes at heart.

WATCH: Harris forces fumble, Alabama offense converts points off the turnover with Latu TD reception

The forced turnover by Christian Harris led to a TD pass from QB Bryce Young to TE Cameron Latu.

Alabama’s offense finally got into the endzone during this CFP Championship against the Georgia Bulldogs in the fourth quarter thanks to a Stetson Bennett fumble recovered by Crimson Tide DB Brian Branch on the sideline.

Crimson Tide linebackers Will Anderson and Christian Harris got the initial pressure on Bennett and forced a fumble that Georgia fans, of course, were not happy about (even though it was the obvious call).

Branch made the nice grab on the sideline without awareness of the situation, most likely, as it appeared that he was nonchalant in trying to gain possession of the loose ball. He managed to get his toes in with possession to secure the turnover for the Tide. He collected the traditional belt given to any Tide defender that can grab a live ball.

Tired of field goals, Nick Saban on the ensuing possession decided that the Crimson Tide weren’t going to kick another field goal this close to the endzone, so they went all in to get the touchdown on the short reception in the endzone by Cameron Latu off of a nice Bryce Young pass.

Alabama now leads over Georgia in the CFP championship game by a score of 18-13.

WATCH: Brian Robinsons stiff-arms FOUR UGA defenders on strong run in 3rd quarter; Score 13-9 after UGA TD

B-Rob stiff-armed 4 UGA defenders on his 16-yard run in the 3rd quarter! But the Crimson Tide are now down 13-9 late in the 3rd.

Alabama and Georgia are in the middle of a knockdown drag out of a football game, and so far it’s favoring the Crimson Tide.

The point of attack, the line of scrimmage, has favored the Crimson Tide slightly throughout the game, but significantly so during this second half so far.

Alabama running back Brian Robinson rushed for 35 yards during the Crimson Tide’s first drive of the second half, which included a powerful 16-yard run which saw four Georgia defenders get a mean stiff-arm from the hand of Robinson.

Alabama’s first drive of the second half began with 10:55 on the clock in the third quarter at their own 3-yd line. It burned seven minutes and 45 seconds but culminated in a blocked field goal giving the Bulldogs the ball at their own 21-yard line.

Good Morning Football’s Kyle Brandt might classify that as an angry run.

The run was nice, but it would have been way better had the Tide punched the ball into the endzone during that drive.

The Bulldogs marched down the field during the ensuing possession and score this national championship game’s first touchdown. Georgia now has a 13-9 lead over the Crimson Tide with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter.

Report: COVID-19 issues at Ohio State could delay CFP championship

A report suggests COVID-19 issues at Ohio State could lead to a postponement of the CFP championship

Ohio State has been limited to seven games this season. It already was an issue about whether the Buckeyes deserved to be one of the four teams in the College Football Playoff.

Well, the Buckeyes were chosen and advanced to the championship game on Jan. 11. Now, AL.com reports COVID-19 issues could led to a postponement of the game with Alabama.

Per Al.com:

There are concerns related to Ohio State’s player availability for the game, according to sources, setting up a massive decision less than a week from when the game is scheduled to kick off in Miami. Ohio State has informed key parties involved it could be without a position group due to COVID-19 testing and related protocols.

There have been discussions amongst the SEC, Big Ten, the College Football Playoff and the schools related to possibly postponing the Jan. 11 title game, sources said, though a final decision on the situation has yet to be reached. The CFP has already established Jan. 18 in Hard Rock Stadium as the makeup date should the title game have to be postponed.

College Football Playoff delays final rankings by 2 weeks

The late start to the college football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the CFP selection committee to audible on its schedule.

The final rankings were scheduled to be released Dec. 6. However, executive director Bill Hancock announced Wednesday the date for the final rankings is Dec. 20.

“With recent schedule changes for the regular season, it makes sense for the committee to make its final rankings after the conference championship games, when it can get a complete picture of the season,” Hancock said. “The selection committee members understand the need to be flexible as we all navigate uncharted waters this season, and this move will allow them to evaluate all the available information.”

The change is a result of several conferences having moved their championship games to Dec. 12, 18 or 19.

The top four teams will participate in the Playoff Semifinals Jan. 1, in the Rose Bowl Game and Sugar Bowl. The national championship game will be played on Jan.11, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.

One other change was announced about when the teams in the championship games would arrive in Florida.

The teams participating in the CFP National Championship will arrive Jan. 9, a Saturday, instead of Friday evening.

“In this unprecedented time, the Management Committee believes it is in the best interest for the health and safety of the student-athletes, coaches and staffs to complete their game-week preparation on campus, under the familiar protocols they will have used all season,” Hancock said. “This is an unfortunate consequence of the pandemic, but it is the right thing to do.”

There remains much to think about before deciding when — if — teams should travel to a site for the CFP championship. Hard to understand how the season is still being considered when such caution is in place months up the road.
