Washington State vs Central Michigan Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Preview

Central Michigan paid its ticket for the Arizona Bowl and it got an upgrade. Boise State couldn’t go, to the Chippewas moved from Tucson over to El Paso to get a shot at a Washington State team that’s had a wild and fun ride to get here.

The Cougars fought through their own adversity to win three of their last four games and six of their last eight. After all of the drama with former head coach Nick Rolovich, Washington State kept on winning, and it rewarded its coach by making Jake Dickert the full-time head man.

– The Cougars are going to throw and throw some more, but it’s all to control the clock and the tempo – they led the Pac-12 in time of possession.

The Chippewas are a whole lot of fun. They make big plays.

They make big plays on offense with the MAC’s second-best passing game. They make big plays on defense with the most sacks and plays in the backfield by anyone in the conference. They make big plays on special teams with the nation’s best punt return game.

Titans take OT Bernhard Raimann in PFF mock draft

If the Titans made this pick, Raimann would be the third early-round tackle drafted by Tennessee since 2020.

After the 2021 campaign, the Tennessee Titans need to take a good long look at their offensive line, as the group has not performed well in pass protection this season.

Tennessee’s offensive line has given up 45 sacks, the fourth-most in the NFL, after allowing just 26 last season. Adding to that, in-game injuries have also been an issue for most of the big guys upfront.

Center Ben Jones will be a free agent in 2022, and both left tackle Taylor Lewan and left guard Rodger Saffold are potential cap casualties with their friendly dead cap numbers. All three are a bit long in the tooth as well.

On the right side, right guard Nate Davis is mostly solid but inconsistent, and right tackle David Quessenberry has been a downgrade from Dennis Kelly and doesn’t look like a long-term solution at the position.

Tennessee might have a few in-house choices if big changes do come, as both rookie offensive tackle Dillon Radunz and guard/center Aaron Brewer could take over starting positions.

With all that said, Pro Football Focus’ Eric Eager has the Titans addressing the offensive line in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft by taking Central Michigan offensive tackle, Bernhard Raimann.

Here’s Eager’s thoughts on the pick:

I originally thought quarterback here, but Ryan Tannehill’s cap charge is prohibitive until at least 2023 (and realistically 2024), so we go with some support. Raimann blew up in 2021 after three years of improvement, earning a 94.6 overall grade and allowing 10 pressures all season.

Should the Titans draft Raimann, he would be their third early-round tackle pick in three years after Isaiah Wilson was taken in the first round in 2020, and then Radunz in the second round in 2021.

Raimann could play on either side of the offensive line depending on what the Titans need from him, and his impressive athleticism is a great fit for Tennessee’s zone-run scheme.

Eastern Michigan vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Is that really the Eastern Michigan running game?

The passing attack has been great throughout the season with the ground game along for the ride. In the stunning 22-21 win over Western Michigan two weeks ago, former UCF RB Jawon Hamilton ran for 187 yards as the team came up with a season-high 255 yards.

Central Michigan’s run D has been fine, but it gives up plenty of yards through the air. Eastern Michigan’s offense should be balanced, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Central Michigan O has been dominant.

The 39-38 loss to Northern Illinois was the killer for MAC West title hopes, but the Chippewas have won five of their other six games since early October with 200 yards both on the ground and through the air over the last two weeks.

Eastern Michigan doesn’t generate enough consistent pressure, the defense isn’t good on third downs, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan will close out with a bang, making a statement that it might just be the second-best team in the MAC if Northern Illinois goes on to win the MAC Championship.

Both teams are bowl eligible with solid seven-win seasons – NIU is currently the only other MAC team with seven or more wins – so the pressure is off. This is just for a little bit if in-state MAC pride.

Central Michigan’s offense will be more effective, but the Eastern Michigan passing attack will make this a whole lot of fun.

Central Michigan vs Ball State Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

There’s a chance Central Michigan can still win the MAC West by winning its last two games and Northern Illinois losing its last two. Unfortunately, NIU is playing Buffalo at the same time this is happening – there might be a wee bit of scoreboard watching happening.

The Chippewas lost to NIU in a 39-38 thriller a few weeks ago, but that’s been the only blip over the last five games as the offense has been consistent through the air and good enough running the ball to keep up with the Kent States and Toledos of the world.

Ball State doesn’t have much of a downfield passing game, it doesn’t control the clock, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Ball State Will Win

The offense is running all over everyone lately.

The Cardinals were right there with Northern Illinois only to lose 30-29 – but they ran for 246 yards.

After doing nothing on the ground for most of the year, they’ve hit 200 yards in three of the last four games to balance out a decent enough offense that’s more effective than the overall stats.

Central Michigan won’t pick off a whole lot of passes and it’s more than happy to give up close to 300 yards a game through the air, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Central Michigan run defense has been a rock. It allowed over 200 yards to Missouri to start the season, and that’s been it – only Northern Illinois has come close to two bills.

However, Ball State is finally back in Muncie after playing four of its last five games on the road, and at 5-5 it needs this a whole lot more than 6-4 Central Michigan does.

The defending MAC champs will rise up defensively in the fourth quarter in yet another close game – the last four Ball State games have been decided by a touchdown or less.

Kent State vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Kent State Will Win

No one’s stopping this offense.

It might not be great on third downs, and the offensive line gives up a whole lot of plays behind the line, but the yards and points don’t stop.

The MAC East race isn’t over – it still has to get past Miami University if the RedHawks win this week against Buffalo – but at least the Golden Flashes are close. It’s coming from QB Dustin Crum and an attack that just ripped through Northern Illinois for close to 700 yards.

This team moves fast, fast, fast, with the balance to figure out how to roll no matter what defenses try to do. Central Michigan has a bit-time offense with the best passing attack in the MAC, but the defense gives up a whole lot of yards.

Can the Chippewas keep up the pace? Kent State will put up close to 500 yards. Get there, CMU. And …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewa offense can hang.

This might not be the dangerous all-around O that Kent State brings, but the scoring punch has been there over the past few weeks – helped by a few big punt returns for scores against Western Michigan from Kalil Pimpleton – with Daniel Richardson a sure thing for 200 yards or more through the air.

The Kent State secondary has been getting crushed, allowing close to 1,200 yards over the last three games including 532 in the win over Northern Illinois. Combine that with a whole lot of Golden Flash penalties, and Central Michigan should have more than enough chances to keep on scoring – and to hold serve once in a while – at home.

What’s Going To Happen

Get ready to have a whole lot of fun, because Kent State games are always a blast.

The Golden Flashes manage to come up with wins even though they give up a bazillion yards – that’s the cost of doing business.

However, Central Michigan will bomb away and have one of its better games on the ground, but it’ll be an up-and-down fight that will end with a big late scoring drive.

Kent State doesn’t turn the ball over, but Central Michigan’s offense won’t need the help.

Central Michigan vs Western Michigan Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The passing game has been terrific.

The Chippewas might have suffered a crippling blow in a wild 39-38 loss to Northern Illinois last week, but Daniel Richardson ripped it up for close to 300 yards with three scores and a whole lot of big plays.

With the top passing attack in the MAC – Richardson has been bombs away over the last five games with 14 touchdowns and just two picks, both against Ohio – and Western Michigan has to prove it can be consistent enough to keep up.

The Bronco pass defense hasn’t been bad. It’s the offensive side that’s been the puzzling part of the picture, without enough points for all the yards. They average over 431 yards per game and are balanced, but they’re only pushed past 24 points once in the last five games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Western Michigan Will Win

Can the Broncos control the tempo like they want to?

Again, it’s a strangely disappointing team. There’s no problem getting the passing game going, and the rushing yards are enough to help balance things out, but the real calling card is time of possession – the O is always on the field.

Western Michigan is second in the nation at controlling the clock, holding the ball for close to 37 minutes a game, but Central Michigan’s defense is outstanding on third downs and it’s great at coming up with tackles for loss.

The Western Michigan offensive front, though, is excellent in pass protection, and its own defensive front can get behind the line without a problem against a leaky Central Michigan line.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s a big game in the MAC West race, made even bigger by Eastern Michigan stepping up and knocking down Toledo on Tuesday night. With so much traffic in the division, the loser of this is all but done.

Expect to be a bit of an offensive show, even though the Western Michigan defense is good enough to keep this in check for stretches – and that will be the difference.

The Broncos will have the ball for what seems like three hours, and the Central Michigan defense will have too many problems coming up with the difference-making play.

Western Michigan will do a better job of getting into the backfield than the Central Michigan D will.

Northern Illinois vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Northern Illinois Will Win

Is Northern Illinois really ready to make a big step forward in the MAC race? It all starts with ten running game.

It took a few years, but this is how the program is supposed to roll with 240 rushing yards or more on the ground against everyone but Michigan and Georgia Tech.

It’s getting a massive year out of its offensive front, the O controls games by dominating the time of possession battle, and the formula might just be good enough to counteract Central Michigan’s biggest strengths.

Can the Chippewas stop the run? Sort of, but it hasn’t played too many teams that gave it much of a shot. Central Michigan allows more than four yards per carry, and …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The defensive front is great at getting into the backfield.

Northern Illinois might be outstanding at preventing defenses from getting to the quarterback, but Troy Hairston and company are about to provide a huge test.

The Chippewas lead the MAC in tackles for loss and are second in sacks – they’re going to be happy to make Northern Illinois try to win this through the air.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams have been involved in tight battle after tight battle. Five of the seven Northern Illinois games were decided bay a touchdown or less, and three of the last four Central Michigan games have been close.

The Northern Illinois ground game will control the clock and the tempo for a while, but the Central Michigan defense is too good at getting off the field – it’s outstanding on third downs.

The Huskies will have to throw the ball late, and it’s not going to work.

Toledo vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Toledo Will Win

Toledo has the versatility to move the ball however it needs to, and in this it should all happen through the air.

The team does better when it’s able to run, but Central Michigan has a bigger issue against anyone who tries to throw – LSU, FIU, and Miami University all cranked up 350 passing yards or more against the Chippewa secondary.

Start throwing, get into the backfield against a leaky CMU offensive line, and rely on the MAC’s best scoring D to come through in the clutch.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Central Michigan Will Win

Can Central Michigan stop the Rockets from running?

Granted, the Chippewa run D stats are partially good because everyone spends so much time running on this group, but it really is solid. It allows just 3.6 yards per carry and hasn’t allowed 200 yards since the opening week 34-24 loss to Missouri.

Toledo is 3-0 when it runs for 200 yards or more, and it’s 0-3 when it doesn’t, so …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Central Michigan defense will hold Toledo to under yards, but it won’t matter.

The Rockets are coming up with well over six yards per carry over the last three games. That, combined with a strong day from the passing attack, will be enough to get them over last week’s loss to Northern Illinois and back into the MAC race with a must-have win.
