Another Penn State wide receiver removed from roster

Penn State has lost another former four-star player at a key position of need.

Penn State has been hit hard at the wide receiver position since the end of the 2023 season, and the hits seem to just keep on coming. [autotag]Carmelo Taylor[/autotag], a former four-star recruit in Penn State’s Class of 2023, has reportedly been removed from the team’s roster.

According to On3, Taylor was removed from the Penn State football roster found online, although his name has yet to appear in the NCAA transfer portal as of Friday. As of now, the reason Taylor was removed from the roster is unconfirmed, although it will be worth watching the transfer portal updates moving forward.

Taylor joined Penn State as a member of the Class of 2023 from Roanoke, VA. Taylor committed to Penn State over offers from South Carolina, Maryland, and more. He spent just one season with Penn State and appeared in two games.

Penn State has already lost one leading wide receiver to a transfer when KeAndre Lambert-Smith made a move to Auburn. Dante Cephas had previously transferred to Kansas State and Cristian Driver made a move to Minnesota. Other wide receivers currently in the transfer portal include Malik McClain and Malick Meiga.

Penn State did add former Ohio State wide receiver Julian Fleming to the roster from the transfer portal. Wide receiver remains a high priority for the Nittany Lions in the transfer portal before the start of the 2024 season.

Top five true freshman wide receivers in the Big Ten for 2023

Top five true freshman wide receivers in the Big Ten for 2023 #GoBucks #B1G

It is always fun to look at recruiting rankings. The recruiting landscape receives more coverage every year and is a very important aspect of building a program. Still, it is important to remember these players and prospects are not defined by these rankings.

I was diving into the most recent class and trying to figure out which future Buckeye is going to shine brightest and fastest but noticed that the Big Ten as a whole was pretty interesting recruiting-wise this cycle, and we already dove into the top quarterbacks and top running backs of the class, but now we will take a look at the top wide receivers in the class of 2023.

The following are the top five wide receiver recruits ranked by 247Sports heading to Big Ten schools this fall.

Penn State football locks in Class of 2023

Here is every player Penn State has announced in its Class of 2023.

Penn State’s start to the early signing period on Wednesday ended with the official signing of 22 members of its Class of 2023. The recruiting class is one balanced with offense and defense and will add some terrific quality and depth on the line of scrimmage a year after addressing some skill positions in the Class of 2022. And while the latest recruiting class didn’t necessarily go off without a mild bump in the road on the first day of the early signing period, it is getting head coach James Franklin excited about the program’s future.

Penn State made sure to sign some of the top players from in the state but also did some solid work beyond the state’s borders. This was especially true in Virginia as the Nittany Lions kicked the class off with the first commitment on the board from Virginia offensive lineman [autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag] and continued to add help from the state right up until the final days of the recruiting efforts before the early signing period opened. In all, Penn State added players from nine different states ranging from Alabama to New York.

Here is the full rundown of the confirmed additions to the Penn State program in the Class of 2023.

Penn State recruiting snapshot: 4-star Carmelo Taylor

Snapshot profile of Penn State commitment Carmelo Taylor.

Penn State continues to put together a fine Class of 2023 with some four-star talent across the roster. One of the last pieces of the class added to the recruiting haul is wide receiver Carmelo Taylor, who surprised many by committing to the Nittany Lions over South Carolina.

Taylor is a recruiting prize out of Virginia, a state that has been kind to Penn State over the years and continues to produce talent for the program as a pipeline state.

Here is a brief overview of Penn State’s wide receiver commit.

Penn State scores four-star wide receiver commitment for Class of 2023

Penn State recruiting gets a nice rebound with the addition of four-star receiver Carmelo Taylor.

What better way to rebound from losing a four-star recruit than by adding another? Penn State did just that on Wednesday with a commitment from four-star wide receiver [autotag]Carmelo Taylor[/autotag], from Virginia.

Taylor announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions with a post on his Instagram account. Taylor ultimately chose Penn State over South Carolina, which had been predicted as the favorite according to the 247Sports crystal ball predictions in recent weeks. Virginia Tech was the other top school in the running, but James Franklin managed to win a recruiting battle against his former assistant and new Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry.

Taylor joins a stellar Class of 2023 lineup heading to Penn State, and his addition will help keep Penn State in the top 10 of the national recruiting rankings. His addition also softens the blow felt earlier in the week with the decommitment of a four-star recruit on the defensive side of the football.

Taylor also fills a key position in the recruiting class as Penn State’s only wide receiver currently lined up in the current recruiting cycle. Penn State did add some receiver depth in the Class of 2022 but the Nittany Lions lost a commitment from a receiver in late July.

Taylor made an official visit to Penn State in late June after making previous trips in June to Maryland and South Carolina.

Four-star receiver sets decision date; Penn State in Top 5

Penn State made the top 5 for this wide receiver target out of Virginia with a decision date locked in.

Penn State has been busy this summer putting together one of the best recruiting classes in the Big Ten and in the nation for the Class of 2023. After an eventful and rewarding month of June, Penn State is hoping to keep the good news flowing throughout July. Toward the end of the month, one key recruiting target will announce his college decision, and Penn State is considered to be in the mix.

[autotag]Carmelo Taylor[/autotag], from Roanoke, Virginia, announced on his Twitter account that he will be sharing his college decision with the public on July 25. In that announcement, Taylor revealed his top five schools as the decision looms. Penn State was among those in the final running, with Maryland, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia being the others.

Taylor made two official visits in the month of June, with Penn State getting the last opportunity for an official visit on campus. Taylor’s other official visit was to South Carolina. Judging strictly by his Twitter feed, the trip to Columbia went pretty well, which is part of the reason the Gamecocks are considered one of the top contenders for Taylor’s commitment.

While there are no crystal ball predictions currently on file at 247Sports, the On3 prediction machine gives fairly even chances to Virginia Tech (37.0%) and South Carolina (32.3%) to receive Taylor’s verbal commitment later in the month. Penn State is third in the running according to the On3 prediction machine with a 27.7% chance of securing the commitment. We may get a better read on things once any crystal ball predictions are formally submitted, but Penn State does appear to be on the outside looking in down the stretch.

There would be nothing current Virginia Tech head coach and former Penn State defensive coordinator [autotag]Brent Pry[/autotag] would love more than to “dominate the state” by keeping Taylor close to home and away from the Nittany Lions (and Gamecocks).

Here is a look at this Class of 2023 wide receiver that could be flying under the radar for many out of Virginia.
