Carey Price seemingly forgot Canadiens’ NHL Draft pick David Reinbacher’s name during selection

Oh no, Carey Price!

Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price got a bit of stage fright as he announced his team’s fifth-overall pick during Wednesday night’s first round of the 2023 NHL Draft.

As Price shared the selection of defenseman David Reinbacher, he said the draft pick’s first name of “David” but couldn’t quite bring it home as he forgot the prospect’s last name.

It took a few moments for the Canadiens to realize that Price wasn’t going to remember the draft pick’s last name before someone stepped in to announce the selection.

It’d be Montreal general manager Kent Hughes came in with the save to finish the announcement, but all poor Price could do is stand there awkwardly as the Canadiens contingent celebrated the pick.

A bit later in the night, Price joked about the on-camera flub.

Y’know, once the cameras start rolling, it’s easy to get a bit overwhelmed by the moment. Maybe Price wasn’t nervous at all and just forgot the name altogether.

All the same, this did make for a pretty funny moment during this year’s NHL Draft. Maybe Montreal will invite Price back next year to redeem himself?

Carey Price got an emotional, heartwarming standing ovation before Canadiens home opener

Carey Price forever.

There’s no one like Carey Price in the NHL.

The 35-year-old goaltender may never play another hockey game in his life due to a lingering knee injury, but the life-long Montreal Canadiens netminder is as beloved as they come. On Wednesday, the Canadiens opened the 2022-23 season at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs, once again missing Price as their starting netminder thanks to injury.

Last season, Price played in five games for the Canadiens at season’s end, missing most of the season after stepping away for mental health reasons. Even with his career in question, Price wouldn’t miss Canadiens’ opening night for the world, as he made an appearance during Montreal’s introductory ceremony to kick off the new season and was given an emotional standing ovation in response from the fans.

After everything Price has been through, that’s one incredible welcome from Canadiens fans. Bravo Montreal and bravo Price!

The 6 most intriguing NHL players exposed for the 2021 expansion draft

NHL teams left some surprising players exposed for the expansion draft.

The NHL expansion draft is drawing closer by the day, but we now have a clearer picture as to whom the Seattle Kraken will pick by midweek. The protection lists for all 30 participating NHL teams have been revealed, and there are some interesting names left off the list.

Given the depth of many NHL teams, this expansion draft was always going to be a difficult exercise for general managers across the league. Even still, there are a handful of names left exposed for the Kraken to pick up that are head-turners, whether they be players already on the way out or players who were once thought essential but are now expendable.

With that in mind, here are the six most intriguing NHL players left off protected lists ahead of the upcoming expansion draft.

Toronto Maple Leafs blow 3-1 series lead to the Montreal Canadiens after disappointing Game 7 loss

Yes, the Maple Leafs have blown yet another lead.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans know this feeling all too well by now. The Maple Leafs had three chances to eliminate the Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs and failed to do so each time, resulting in their own exit from the postseason with a 3-1 loss in the series finale.

On Monday, during the most-dreaded Game 7 of all time, the Maple Leafs playoff aspirations ended with a whimper. It was quite a painful game to watch from the Maple Leafs perspective, as Toronto and Montreal played to a scoreless first period in a clear attempt not to make mistakes, but then the Canadiens got the opening goal three minutes into the second and that was… that.

There is set to be a lot of questions leveled at the Maple Leafs this offseason, but let’s start with what we do know:

  • Toronto has not won a playoff series since 2004.
  • The Maple Leafs have eight straight losses in playoff series clinching games.
  • For the majority of the 2020-21 NHL season, the Maple Leafs were at the top of the North Division, ultimately leading by five points at season’s end.

This is no doubt an incredibly disappointing end to the Maple Leafs season. Toronto was favored and expected by many to be the lone team standing from the North Division after the opening rounds of the playoffs. This Toronto team was probably the best we had seen in some time, with a deep offensive lineup, a well-rounded defense, and goaltending that just needed to be average to win.

Instead, the Maple Leafs’ offensive dried up at the worst possible time. The NHL’s leading goal scorer this season in Auston Matthews — who had 41 goals in the regular season — was held to just one goal and five total points in seven games. Mitch Marner, the Maple Leafs’ top point producer this season, had four points in six games. William Nylander? Four goals in the first four games of the postseason, then just one in the final three games.

It’s not fair to put all of the Maple Leafs woes on the young stars of the team. Trade deadline acquisition Nick Foligno had one assist in four games, while Toronto’s veterans in Jason Spezza, Joe Thornton, Wayne Simmonds, and Alex Galchenyuk weren’t able to come up big when it mattered. Of course, the loss of captain John Tavares to an accidental — but very scary — injury in the opening moments of Game 1 hurt Toronto big time, yet the Maple Leafs were able to win three games without him, but not the fourth.

That’s not to take anything away from the Canadiens here either, as Montreal played out of their minds defensively. And when they weren’t able to keep the Maple Leafs to the edges of the offensive zone, Carey Price in net was there to save the day. Price was, without a doubt, the MVP for Montreal in this series, putting up a heroic Game 7 performance and posting a .947 save percentage throughout the first round.

And yet, if you’re the Maple Leafs, this playoff showing is nothing but a catastrophic disappointment. It’s hard to even say where Toronto goes from here, whether they deem this to be an aberration and that their players have more to give, or if they’ll make cataclysmic changes to their roster over the next few months in an attempt to shake off their ghosts once and for all.

One thing is for certain, however, and it’s that the Maple Leafs will absolutely be the team to watch this upcoming offseason after yet another inadequate, underwhelming playoff performance.

Canadiens Carey Price committed absolute robbery against the Maple Leafs with this desperation stick save

Absolutely the best save of the Stanley Cup playoffs so far.

With a goaltender like Carey Price in net, the Montreal Canadiens are never out of a play as long as he can make an attempt on a save. The Toronto Maple Leafs — and Jason Spezza — got a front row seat to Price stealing a goal away with his stick during Monday night’s Game 3 of their first round Stanley Cup playoff series.

At the halfway point of the first period, the Maple Leafs were able to exploit a Canadiens’ misplay in their zone, allowing Spezza to receive a pass wide open at the side of the net. Though Spezza had net to shoot at, Price was able to dive over Superman-style to stop the puck, as it deflected off his stick and up out of play.

And yes, it was absolutely as mind-blowing as it sounds.

Talk about the save of the playoffs so far! Here’s the money-shot angle from inside the net to showcase just how good this save was by Price as Spezza had nothing but daylight to shoot at.

That tinniest bit of hesitation from Spezza upon receiving the pass was a big reason why Price was able to gather himself enough to dive over to stop the shot. If it was a tap-in attempt, like it seemed to be as the play was happening live, Price would have had no shot.

And yet! Price made the desperation stop to keep the game scoreless for Montreal, no doubt one of the best saves we’ve seen this year.

Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens (30-28-9) tangle with the New York Islanders (35-21-8) Tuesday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Canadiens-Islanders sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Canadiens at Islanders: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price vs. Thomas Greiss

Price is 26-23-6 with a 2.76 goals against average and .910 save percentage across 55 starts. While he actually has a losing record since the All-Star break, going 6-7-2, his GAA is better than his season numbers at 2.54. He also has a 2.63 GAA on the road in 25 outings as opposed to a 2.87 in 30 contests at home. He allowed two goals on 23 shots in a 4-2 win over the Isles at Bell Centre in his only previous start vs. NYI this season.

Greiss is 16-8-3 with a 2.65 GAA and .916% SV% across 29 starts and two relief appearances. He is 9-2-1 with a 2.44 GAA and .917 SV% in 13 home games (12 starts). He lost to the Canadiens Dec. 23, yielding three goals on 39 shots.

Prediction

Islanders 3, Canadiens 2

Moneyline (ML)

The ISLANDERS (-143) have rattled off five wins in the past seven home games, and they’re 5-1 in the past six as a home favorite. The Isles are also 15-5 in their past 20 against Atlantic Division foes, making them an attractive play against the Canadiens (+120). Montreal is just 3-7 in the past 10, and 2-5 in the past seven tries against winning teams.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Islanders ML returns a profit of $6.99 if they win, while a $10 wager on the Canadiens ML results in a profit of $12.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

This is going to be a close battle with strong goaltending. Goals will be at a premium. If the Islanders (-1.5, +185) do cover the puck line, bettors will likely need to sweat out an empty-net goal in the final seconds. Too risky. AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. The O/U is set at 5.5 (Over +100, Under -121). The under is a risky, considering the Over is 6-1 in the past seven for the Habs, and 5-0 in the past five against winning teams. However, the Under is 8-1 in the past nine for the Isles. The trends are all over the board, making this a play to AVOID.

Montreal Canadiens at Washington Capitals odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Montreal Canadiens at Washington Capitals sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Montreal Canadiens (27-27-8) visit the Washington Capitals (37-17-5) Thursday at Capital One Arena for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Canadiens-Capitals odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

The Canadiens enter on a five-game skid, recently losing at the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 Tuesday. The Capitals own a two-game losing streak and have dropped four of their last five – recently suffering a 3-2 setback at the Vegas Golden Knights Monday.

Canadiens at Capitals: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price vs. Braden Holtby

Price is 24-22-5 with a 2.76 goals against average (GAA), a .910 save percentage and three shutouts. The 2015 Vezina Trophy winner’s recent struggles have been in direct correlation with the Habs’ skid. He’s allowed 17 goals – at least 3 per game – in the current five-game losing streak. He’s 1-1 vs. the Capitals this season, winning at Washington 5-2 Nov. 15, and losing 4-2 (allowing 3 goals) in Montreal Jan. 27.

Holtby – the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner – is 21-13-4 with a 3.11 GAA, an .897 SV% and no shutouts. He was pulled in his last start after yielding 7 goals on 25 shots in a 7-2 loss vs. the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday. He did win the start before that, beating the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 Feb. 13. He did not play in the first game vs. the Canadiens, but he was the winning goalie Jan. 27 when he stopped 31 of 33 shots.

Prediction

Capitals 5, Canadiens 2

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. The Capitals (-209) are just too expensive. Every $2.09 wagered on the Caps ML only profits $1 if they win. The Canadiens (+170) offer value – a 1.7-to-1 payoff – but I can’t back a team on a 5-game slide. I’ll PASS.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (PL/ATS)

WASHINGTON (-1.5, +135) is the STRONGEST PLAY. Look for LF Alex Ovechkin to snap a 5-game scoreless streak in his quest for 700 career goals – he has 698 – in front of a raucous home crowd as the Caps return from a three-game road trip. The Canadiens (+1.5, -162) will be skating into an ambush here.

Over/Under (O/U)

A slight lean to the OVER 5.5 (-154). The Over is 4-1-1 in the last six head-to-head matchups, while the Capitals are 6-0-1 Over in their last seven vs. Eastern Conference teams.

Every $1.54 bet on the Over profits $1 if there are 6 or more goals scored.

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens (27-25-7) visit the Steel City to play the Pittsburgh Penguins (34-15-6) at PPG Paints Arena in a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Canadiens-Penguins odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Canadiens at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price vs. Matt Murray

Price dropped his last two starts against the Boston Bruins (4-1) and the Arizona Coyotes (3-2). His record is 24-20-4 with a .913 save percentage and 2.71 goals against average through 48 games played (all starts).

In the other crease, Murray is coming in on consecutive losses himself, but both were to the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have the second-most points in the NHL. Murray is 16-7-5 on the season with a .902 SV% and 2.82 GAA.

Prediction

Penguins 3, Canadiens 2

Moneyline (ML)

This is the third meeting this year between the Canadiens and Penguins with the season series tied 1-1. Both games were won by the road team and both went Over the projected total. The Canadiens (+155) have been better on the road this season with a 14-10-3 record and a plus-.26 goal differential on the road compared to a 13-15-4 record and minus-.33 goal differential at home. Also, Montreal has won two straight games in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins (-189) are one of the better teams at home this season with a 19-5-4 record in Pittsburgh. Their scheduled starting goalie, Murray, has a 4-1 lifetime record against Montreal with a .921 SV% and 2.19 GAA. PASS ON THE MONEYLINE because there isn’t enough value on either side.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Despite the low odds, the CANADIENS (+1.5, -167) are the right play here because of their against the spread trends. Montreal is 17-10 ATS on the road and 21-7 when getting 1.5 goals. Pittsburgh is just 11-17 ATS at home and 13-23 when laying 1.5 goals. Price has been better on the road than at home this season. He has a better record, higher SV% and lower GAA in 21 road starts. Also, the underdog is 5-0 in the last five meetings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The last three Canadiens-Penguins games went Under the projected total. Plus, the Under has cashed in four straight Canadiens games and two consecutive Penguins games. The Canadiens have played a lot of close, low-scoring games against quality opponents recently. The Under is 3-0-1 in the Canadiens last four games versus a team with a winning record and 5-1-1 in the Canadiens last seven games as an underdog.

BET UNDER 5.5 (+105).

Previewing Monday’s Washington Capitals at Montreal Canadiens sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Washington Capitals (33-11-5) visit the Montreal Canadiens (22-21-7) Monday at the Bell Centre for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Capitals-Canadiens odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

The Capitals, who lead the Metropolitan Division by 4 points, open the second half of the season on a three-game winning streak. The Canadiens own a two-game win streak and have won four of their last five.

Capitals at Canadiens: Projected starting goalies

Braden Holtby vs. Carey Price

Holtby is 18-9-4 with a 3.09 goals against average (GAA) and a .897 save percentage. The 2016 Vezina Trophy winner allowed four goals on 22 shots in his last start before being removed for Ilya Samsonov after the second period at the New York Islanders Jan. 18 – Washington scored five third-period goals to rally for a 6-4 win.

Price – the 2015 Vezina Trophy winner – is 20-16-4 with a 2.84 GAA and a .908 SV%. He won his last four starts and features a 2.11 GAA in January. He stopped 26 of 28 shots in a 5-2 home win vs. the Capitals Nov. 15, the one time these two clubs met this season.

Prediction

Canadiens 5, Capitals 3

Moneyline (ML)

Back the CANADIENS (+115) despite a 10-12-4 home record and the Capitals’ 18-6-1 road mark. Washington is (-139), but Holtby has struggled in January, going 1-2 with a 3.82 GAA and an .857 SV% in four starts.

Every $1 wagered on the Canadiens ML will profit $1.15 if they prevail.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (PL/ATS)

AVOID. Montreal (+1.5, -239) is too expensive – the Habs are 25-25 vs. the PL overall and 9-17 vs. the PL at home. Washington (-1.5, +190) offers a 1.9-to-1 payoff, but since I’m going with the home team ML play, I’ll PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-154) is bit more costly than usual, but it’s the STRONGEST PLAY. I won’t be surprised if the O/U closes at 6. Washington is 7-3 O/U in its last 10 and 31-18 O/U overall. Montreal is usually an Under team, going 2-8 O/U in its last 10, but I’m counting on the Habs to find the back of the net several times vs. Holtby.

Every $1.54 bet on the Over profits $1 if there are 6 or more goals scored.
