Huskers in the NFL: Week 1

Lavonte David led the way for a number of former Huskers in Week 1 of the NFL season, which also saw the debuts of Cam Jurgens and JoJo Domann.

Nineteen former Cornhuskers made their way onto opening day NFL rosters, including rookies Cam Taylor-Britt, Samori Toure, JoJo Domann and Cam Jurgens. A number of former Nebraska stars will play pivotal roles as seasoned veterans this year, such as Houston’s Rex Burkhead, Tampa Bay’s Lavonte David and Denver’s Randy Gregory.

Taylor-Britt and New York Giants’ offensive lineman Nick Gates were the only former Huskers to sit out Week 1 with injuries.

Burkhead, an ever-present receiving threat out of the backfield, has a slight lead on the Texans’ No. 1 running back position over rookie Dameon Pierce. David, a Super Bowl winner, is in his team-leading 11th year in Tampa and lines up with Shaquille Barrett and Devin White to make an imposing combination of linebackers. Week 1 marked Gregory’s first game with the Denver Broncos after spending seven years with the Dallas Cowboys.

While the aforementioned trio will likely make the most noise in the 2022 NFL season, the rest of the fraternity of former Huskers will contribute as well.

Bengals confident with Cam Taylor-Britt after trip to injured reserve

Bengals coaches expect the rookie to be right up to speed once he’s cleared.

Cincinnati Bengals second-round pick Cam Taylor-Britt projected to have a rather big role in the defense on opening day as a rotational piece alongside Eli Apple.

But a smaller injury cut CTB’s rookie training camp short and he was then one of the names the team threw on injured reserve to start the season.

Based on what he’s seen from CTB since though, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor expects the rookie will be quite ready by the time he’s eligible to return.

“I’ll tell you this about Cam, his approach has been really good since this since this happened,” Taylor said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “He’s here early in the morning, getting his stuff done. He meets extra. He’s doing everything we asked him to do. So I’m optimistic that when his time does come that he’s able to come off the list and he’ll be ready and doing everything that he possibly could have done to put himself in a position to go compete and get some playing time.”

That’s big confirmation of the behind-the-scenes work CTB continues to put in despite the setback and a small confirmation he’ll be right in the mix once cleared.

Per NFL rules, CTB and other IR players can return to work after the Week 4 game, which opens a three-week activation period.

Bengals make roster moves with Cam Taylor-Britt, others after waivers

More roster moves for the Bengals.

[mm-video type=video id=01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz/01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz-3ec0f433478cb46a844a339f334ef3d7.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals continued the roster juggling on Thursday in the wake of Tuesday’s 53-man cuts and Wednesday’s very active trip to the waiver wire.

Thursday, the Bengals shifted Khalid Kareem and Cam Taylor-Britt to injured reserve. Waiting until they passed through to the final 53 means both are eligible to return after missing the first four games, if ready.

The Bengals also re-signed wideout Mike Thomas in a corresponding move after waiving him to make room for the IR-bound players.

And as a capper, the team announced it filled the final three spots on its 16-man practice squad:

  • TE Nick Bowers
  • S Yusuf Corker
  • CB Marvell Tell III

Fans can expect a few more moves in the coming days as the dust settles on leaguewide cuts. Plus, a report says the team would still like to sign tight end O.J. Howard.

Former Nebraska CB Cam Taylor-Britt Undergoes Surgery

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers CB Cam Taylor-Britt underwent core surgery

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt underwent core surgery, and he is expected to miss the remainder of training camp, according to Cincinnati Bengals team reporter Marisa Contipelli.

Taylor-Britt spent four seasons with the Cornhuskers appearing in 40 total games. He was a Second-team All-Big Ten selection in both 2020 and 2021. In his senior season, he recorded 51 total tackles, three tackles for loss, 11 passes defended, and one interception.

At the NFL combine, Taylor-Britt ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, which was tied for the fifth-fastest among cornerbacks. He was selected by the Bengals with the 60th overall pick.

When he returns to the field, he is expected to play behind cornerbacks Eli Apple, Chidobe Awuzie, and Mike Hilton, who are currently listed as the starters on Cincinnati’s depth chart.

Bengals rookie Cam Taylor-Britt had surgery, will miss rest of camp

A promising rookie has his training camp derailed.

[mm-video type=video id=01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz/01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz-3ec0f433478cb46a844a339f334ef3d7.jpg]

Cincinnati Bengals second-round pick Cam Taylor Britt won’t partake in the rest of training camp this summer after undergoing surgery to address a core injury.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed the news on Friday before the team’s Week 2 preseason game, per Marisa Contipelli of the team’s website.

It’s a disappointing turn for Taylor-Britt, who had a chance to steal some of the starter’s snaps from veteran Eli Apple at the boundary cornerback spot. That’s still on the table if he can get back healthy during the regular season, but the reps he’ll miss over the next few weeks are critical.

Taylor-Britt had both struggled and flashed his major upside when healthy during camp. Names like the undrafted Allan George will get more chances to prove they belong while he’s out.

Cam Taylor-Britt, already looking like a breakout, excited to INT Joe Burrow

The Bengals rookie looks like a standout at camp and has the swagger to match.

[mm-video type=video id=01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz/01g8xq9xg2v53xm113zz-3ec0f433478cb46a844a339f334ef3d7.jpg]

Cincinnati Bengals rookie cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt has a chance to win at least rotational starting snaps on the boundary alongside Eli Apple this season.

And let’s just say he’s making the most of his opportunity.

CTB looked like a breakout on the first day of camp, showing off that athleticism and coverage ability near the sideline that had the Bengals racing to trade up and make sure they drafted him.

And it’s not just strictly on the field where CTB impresses, either. Already nicknamed “The Energizer Bunny” by teammates, CTB joked in the locker room that he can’t wait to pick off Joe Burrow.

“He’s not here right now? I’m ready to pick him off and hand him the ball,” Taylor Britt said, as captured in the footage from Jeremy Rauch of Fox 19:

Rest assured there are normal highlights too:

It’s going to be a long summer and CTB has a long ways to go in order to see a sizeable role in the defense. But so far? He’s pacing like one of the camp’s biggest breakouts.

Watch: Bengals rookie Cam Taylor-Britt dons bomb suit at WPAFB visit

A hilarious moment from when Bengals rookies visited Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

[mm-video type=video id=01g68qmx5frptcghjre0 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g68qmx5frptcghjre0/01g68qmx5frptcghjre0-272c2020142a68dfcfbca117a23c5d0e.jpg]

Cincinnati Bengals rookie defensive back Cam Taylor-Britt has been one of the most vocal from his draft class since joining the team and has quickly morphed into a fan favorite.

So naturally, the guy teammates already describe as the “Energizer Bunny” was the one rookie to hop in a bomb suit during a visit to Wright Patterson Air Force Base.

In the hilarious footage shared by the team (starting at around the one-minute mark), CTB falls down once he dons the suit, though eventually manages to rip off a few push-ups before getting to his feet.

Here’s the footage from the team:

Cam Taylor-Britt considered x-factor for Bengals in 2022

Is the Bengals rookie an x-factor to know?

[mm-video type=video id=01g68qmx5frptcghjre0 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g68qmx5frptcghjre0/01g68qmx5frptcghjre0-272c2020142a68dfcfbca117a23c5d0e.jpg]

It isn’t hard to come up with x-factors for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022.

Fans know the usual names like Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, plus some defenders like Trey Hendrickson and D.J. Reader.

But what about a rookie like Cam Taylor-Britt?

Tasked with breaking down all 32 rosters and finding x-factors, Pro Football Focus’ Ben Linsey tabbed the second-round rookie as the possible name to know in Cincinnati:

“The Bengals made their way to the Super Bowl with Eli Apple as their No. 2 cornerback, but their investments in the secondary early in the 2022 NFL draft indicate that they’re not necessarily looking to run that back this season. Their second-round pick out of Nebraska, Cam Taylor-Britt, could push Apple for his starting spot. Taylor-Britt allowed a sub-80.0 passer rating on throws into his coverage in each of the past three seasons. He could make an impact for Cincinnati as a rookie.”

It was easy to see with the Bengals drafting Dax Hill in the first round and CTB in the second that they had the long-term angle in mind, but also wanted to grab guys who could rotate in right away.

And for CTB’s case, it sure doesn’t hurt that he was impressing teammates right upon arrival at Paul Brown Stadium. He also managed to be wildly entertaining for fans during a mic’d up session.

While Eli Apple played superb ball in the system last year on the boundary, coaches would surely love to see CTB get in on the action and get those all-important reps, too.

Bengals share fun mic’d up footage of rookie Cam Taylor-Britt

CTB is a leader already for the Bengals.

[mm-video type=video id=01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf-a232440145eb59fc62f9844a355c3e21.jpg]

It’s hard not to notice new Cincinnati Bengals rookie cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt.

The team’s second-round pick this year arrived and instantly impressed teammates. He’s also already earned a funny “Energizer Bunny” nickname from those teammates.

And now we know why.

The Bengals hit social media recently and shared mic’d up footage of CTB in action at OTAs and it is, in a word, hilarious.

The footage certainly backs up the comments from teammates about his energy and leadership already. And just viewing the roughly two minutes of highlights says it all about where he fits and how in terms of that locker room culture.

Here’s a look at the footage:

Bengals draft pick Cam Taylor-Britt already impressing teammates

The Bengals draft pick has the attention of teammates already.

[mm-video type=video id=01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf/01g1yc256yn39q1m6paf-a232440145eb59fc62f9844a355c3e21.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals might have something special with second-round cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt based on the reaction of a team leader like Mike Hilton.

Hilton, a locker room leader and starter, has taken it upon himself to stand in as a mentor for CTB as the rookie gets his career going.

And Hilton’s also already come away impressed with what he sees.

“I’ll make sure he’s ready. That’s part of being a leader and a vet,” Hilton said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “Absolutely. They’re here to help us. I want them to be on top of their game to help us win. I’m definitely going to take him under my wing and try to show him the ropes.”

Hilton also added this about CTB already exceeding expectations: “He’s long. He’s a lot taller than I expected. He has some length. That will be good for us. He looks smooth and agile.”

Already dubbed “The Energizer Bunny,” some of what has already caught Hilton off guard in person is why the Bengals made sure to move up and draft CTB. He projects to get snaps on a rotational basis at the boundary corner spot right away.

And with a guy like Hilton leading the way, it’s reasonable for the team and fans to expect a solid showing from CTB right out of the gates.
