Watch: Eagles Jason Kelce talks about handpicking Cam Jurgens to be his successor at center

Watch: Jason Kelce talks about Cam Jurgens being his favorite player in the NFL draft, handpicking his successor and the Nebraska center reminding the future Hall of Famer of himself

The Eagles drafted Nebraska center Cam Jurgens in the second round with the 51st pick in the draft and they didn’t have to worry about asking Jason Kelce for permission.

While participating in the draft analysis with Adam Lefkoe and Bleacher Report, Kelce revealed that Philadelphia team officials honored him somewhat by allowing the future Hall of Famer to scout prospects over the past two seasons, and on Friday night while working the draft, Kelce referred to Jurgens as the closest comparison to himself in the draft, even ahead of Iowa star, Tyler Linderbaum.

The Eagles All-Pro even referred to Jurgens as his favorite player in the draft on Friday night.

There was some discussion about Philadelphia passing on Nakobe Dean for Jurgens, but he’ll get an opportunity to learn from Kelce as a rookie, something that’ll be invaluable for his career.

While meeting with the media just now, Jurgen says that he models his game after Kelce, highlighting that impressive athletic ability that the Eagles center plays with.

Philadelphia admittedly is still in rebuild mode and they’ve continued to fortify the league’s top offensive line for years to come.

Grading the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2022 NFL draft class

Grading the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2022 NFL draft class

The Eagles entered Thursday night’s NFL draft with 10 total picks after two timely deals involving 2021 trades with the Dolphins and Colts (Carson Wentz).

The Eagles ultimately moved from No. 15 overall up to No. 13 overall to select Georgia All-American defensive tackle, Jordan Davis.

In doing so, Philadelphia parted ways with the Nos. 15, 124, 162, and 166 picks to the Texans to move up two spots where it selected Davis.

After the Chargers used the No. 17 overall pick on Zion Johnson, the Eagles made another move, trading picks No. 18 overall, and a third-round pick (101) to the Tennessee Titans for star wide receiver, A.J. Brown.

That trade left Philadelphia with four picks remaining in the draft and the Eagles utilized Day two picks on Cam Jurgens and Nakobe Dean.

On Day three, Philadelphia moved a fifth-round pick for two sixth-round picks and then traded up to pick No. 181 for Kansas linebacker Kyron Johnson.

At pick 198 overall, the Eagles ended their draft haul with SMU’s pass-catching tight end, Grant Calcaterra.

Here are the grades for Philly’s five-man class.

Eagles philosophy played role in selecting Cam Jurgens over Nakobe Dean with 51st pick

GM Howie Roseman gave some insight into the Eagles’ thought process in selecting Nebraska center Cam Jurgens over Nakobe Dean and other talented defenders with the 51st pick

The Eagles build their roster from the inside out and it is probably the biggest reason for the sustained success despite a lack of talent at key skill positions.

Philadelphia takes pride in stockpiling offensive and defensive line depth and if two draft-eligible prospects have similar grades, the trenches will usually get the pick.

That’s why it shouldn’t have been a shocker when the Eagles went with Nebraska center Cam Jurgens at No. 51 overall, despite Nakobe Dean and other talented defenders still being on the board. On Friday night after Day, two concluded, general manager Howie Roseman gave some insight into his thought process in the second round.

Andy Weidl, the Eagles’ vice president of player personnel told the media that Jurgens does all the things that Jeff Stoutland and team brass prefer an offensive line prospect to do in a certain scheme.

Howie Roseman said the Eagles actually considered drafting Dean at No. 51, but went with Jurgens based on the philosophy of building from the inside out.

When Dean was still on the board one round later, Philadelphia’s plan fell into place.

Jason Kelce had the classiest reaction to the Eagles picking his replacement, Cam Jurgens

What a moment of maturity and grace from Kelce.

At 34, Jason Kelce is still chugging along for the Eagles.

The Super Bowl champion is arguably the league’s best center. But Kelce’s not going to play forever. Someday, he will hang up his pads. And that day might be coming sooner than later.

The Eagles took a center in the 2022 NFL Draft with the No. 51 overall pick,  Nebraska’s Cam Jurgens. The prospect undoubtedly will soon be their man in the middle. In other words, he’s Kelce’s eventual replacement.

Ever the calm and composed leader, that didn’t appear to faze Kelce, who’s been broadcasting live during the draft with Bleacher Report’s Adam Lefkoe. In fact, Kelce knew the Eagles were drafting Jurgens and he wholeheartedly loved the pick.

It’s one thing to maintain your composure when your employer drafts the person who will one day take your job. It’s another thing entirely to give him a wholesale endorsement live on camera.

Few people would be gracious and secure enough to leave behind their ladder for someone else to climb. Kelce is definitely one of them.
