Goshen News publishes story about Notre Dame cornerbacks

Do you have high hopes for this unit?

With spring practice in full swing at Notre Dame, now is the time to write about pretty much everything related to the program. After all, the first game of the season is months away, so it’s nice to read about the team without having to look at it through the lens of game performance. The Goshen News realizes is and decided to look at one of the units the Irish have. Specifically, Evan Lepak has written about Mike Mickens’ cornerbacks.

Significant attention is given to veterans TaRiq Bracy, Clarence Lewis and Cam Hart. Lepak also notes that the Irish have a bunch of freshmen after those three on the depth chart. There are redshirt freshmen Ryan Barnes, Philip Riley and Chance Tucker. The Irish also have early enrollee Jaden Mickey in camp.

We don’t know how effective the Irish will be at cornerback in 2022, but this cast of characters will be interesting to watch if for no other reason than to see how deep they can go with such a drop-off of experience.

Freeman visits Maryland High School that has been kind to Notre Dame

Could two more Good Counsel players be headed to South Bend?

Although Maryland isn’t known across the country for having a large contingent to football players to matriculate to play at the Power-5 level, but that doesn’t mean the state doesn’t have solid football. The Irish have still recently found two players from the state to make contributions in South Bend.

Most notably defensive back Cam Hart, who played a huge role his past fall and Davis Sherwood who just completed his first season playing for the Irish. Today, new head coach Marcus Freeman visited Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and the question is, who is on his radar.

If I had to guess, it isn’t a 2022 prospect but 2023 defensive end’s Dylan Gooden and Neeo Avery. Currently, both prospectus hold Irish offer’s so there is a very good chance Freeman was there to see them. Due to NCAA recruiting rules, he was not able to speak to them, but visiting the school is more than enough to show to Avery and Gooden that they are wanted in Blue and Gold.

Significant injury news regarding Notre Dame defense

How much would Notre Dame miss him Saturday?

Notre Dame is just days away from taking on Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl and the Irish already knew they’d be without star safety Kyle Hamilton who hasn’t played since mid-October.  Now it appears that Notre Dame may be playing without another stellar member of their secondary as cornerback Cam Hart was seen at Wednesday’s practice with his leg heavily wrapped and not moving around well whatsoever.

Hart was stellar in Notre Dame’s secondary this season with his biggest game coming against Wisconsin when he recorded a pair of interceptions.  If he’s  unable to go expect to see more playing time at corner for senior Tariq Bracy or possible some of freshman Ryan Barnes.

The hidden plays at made a difference for Notre Dame in their win over Virginia

It’s not always touchdown passes and turnovers that can make a difference in a game. There are always more than a handful of other plays that won’t be shown on highlight shows that make a massive impact on the game. Here are five plays that won’t get the recognition they deserve but where very important in Notre Dame’s 28-3 win against Virginia.

Can Notre Dame stop USC star WR Drake London?

The Irish need to key in on London this weekend

So far this year USC wide receiver Drake London has torn apart every defense he’s faced except on, Stanfords. On the year, London has 64 receptions for 832-yards and 5 scores. The yardage puts the Trojan wide receiver 4th in the country and second in the country in catches.

He’s been awesome over his last four games, each of them going over 130-yards, averaging a score each of them. How do you stop London? Well, you have to go back and look at what the Cardinal did to him, specially cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly.

After holding London to a season low 4 catches and 68-yards, he mentioned that his “mentality going in, it was gonna be a battle…. I had to go in with confidence, knowing that I could press or I could play off,” said Kelly.

That’s the key right there, will be mixing coverages, press and off, to confuse London as much as possible. Having a safety over the top, most likely Kyle Hamilton to help whichever cornerback, Cam Hart or Clarence Lewis ends up on him.

Another key will be to get pressure on Kedon Slovis and not give him time to make the proper reads. Isaiah Foskey has to continue to be a monster while Jayson Ademilola also has to pressure Slovis.

It will not be an easy task to contain London, but the Blu print is there. With a week off prior to facing the Trojans, Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman should have a good game plan to stop the star receiver. B

Notre Dame at Virginia Tech: First-Quarter Analysis

Not having fun yet.

So far, the prognostications that the game between Notre Dame and Virginia Tech would feature little offense mostly have held to form. The offense that we have seen has not gone the Irish’s way. Accordingly, they find themselves down, 7-0, after the first quarter.

The Irish took the ball first and opted to start Jack Coan. The drive went nowhere, and it ended with him being sacked by Amare Barno on third-and-long. The Irish’s defense caused a three-and-out the first time it saw the field. When the offense came back out, Drew Pyne took over quarterback duties, and he helped get the ball into Hokies territory before his first drive stalled.

Braxton Burmeister engineered his second drive to perfection, mixing a series of complete passes and runs. He was aided by a holding call against Cam Hart, but based on how the drive was going, what followed seemed destined to happen anyway. Raheem Blackshear concluded the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run, giving the folks in Blacksburg something to keep their loud support going. It all happened in less than four minutes of game time.

In what could be a sign that Pyne is going to remain in the game for now, he came back out for the Irish when their offense returned to the field. He did nothing but get sacked by Josh Fuga on third down. The quarter ended with the Hokies picking up a first down that put them in Irish territory. This could be a long night.

Let’s get wild, Cincinnati! Predictions for Notre Dame against the Bearcats

Who do you think has a big game against the Bearcats?

It that time of the week again, where the homer comes out. The Irish are riding high, after soundly beating Wisconsin to improve to 4-0 and once again rise in the rankings. This week another big challenge awaits the undefeated squad, the Cincinnati Bearcats. Let’s get a bit crazy with a few predictions for how this afternoon will go.

Cincinnati quarterback thinks they’ll silence the Notre Dame crowd

It’s going to be loud Saturday

Every week at any level of football is the biggest week of the year and this Saturday is no different for the Irish. They welcome in defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman’s former team, the No.9 ranked Cincinnati Bearcats.

It presents yet another ranked opponent in front of Notre Dame, this one at home. The Bearcats come in confident, especially fourth-year starter Desmond Ridder. He enters the contest with tons of experience and a winning resume. Over his four seasons he’s guided Cincinnati to a 34-5 record while throwing 64 touchdown passes to just 22 interceptions. Ridder has played in plenty of big games on the road and this one won’t phase him at all.

He told Cincinnati TV sports reporter Brandon Saho that Notre Dame Stadium “shouldn’t be loud for too long.” Clearly Ridder is implying that not only will the Bearcats play well, but they’ll silence the crowd early with their play.

I love the confidence but Ridder doesn’t have to play against the soon to be raucous fans. He’s going to have to go against Isaiah Foskey, Kyle Hamilton, JD Bertrand, the Ademilola brothers, Cam Hart and the rest of the Irish defense. His focus should be on them, not the crowd. Ridder is just adding fuel to the Irish’s fire, and a defense that saw turn a huge corner against Wisconsin last week.

5 Stars: The Best and Worst of Notre Dame’s win over Wisconsin

That was fun, but the Irish still have some work to do

The first half wasn’t pretty, but heading into the locker room with a 10-3 lead was great for the Irish. The Badgers battled back to take a 13-10 lead but the Irish answered in a huge way. They made the plays at the most opportune times and ended up blowing out Wisconsin, 41-13. Find out who had the best, 5 stars, and worst, 1 star, performances for the Irish today.

Watch: Drew White get’s another pick-6 for Notre Dame against Wisconsin

It’s a pick-6 party for the Irish!!!

Oh hey Jack Kiser, this is Drew White, I saw your house call and wanted to make one of my own. As the Badgers scrambled to try and come back against Notre Dame, they were forced to go through the air and it wasn’t such a good idea.

Jack Kiser just returned an interception for a touchdown and then it was White’s turn to do the same. The tip drill resulted in White picking off yet another Graham Mertz pass, this fourth of the day, and with a convoy of defenders turned blockers, White like Kiser, found the endzone to put an exclamation point on the huge win against Wisconsin.
