Oregon vs. California: Ducks see early line movement in road game vs. Golden Bears

The betting line took an early jump in favor of the Ducks this weekend vs. Cal.

This certainly is a version of the Oregon Ducks that fans were wanting to see in 2022 under new head coach Dan Lanning, isn’t it? In fact, it may even be beyond some expectations, to be completely honest.

The Ducks are playing at the top of their game right now, displayed in a 45-30 win over the No. 10 UCLA Bruins. The offense is among the very best in the nation, the quarterback is among the top Heisman Trophy contenders, and the coaching staff has proved that they know how to manage a game and scheme against the best.

After a two-week build-up that led to one of the most important games of the Pac-12 season, Oregon now gets a chance to take a breath. They still play a game this coming weekend, though it’s against the California Golden Bears, who stand near the bottom of the Pac-12 power rankings. Under certain regimes, fans would likely worry about the Ducks riding too high after a win like they just experienced, but with the way that Lanning has prepared his squad week after week, I think that this fan base feels pretty comfortable with the next two games against Cal and Colorado.

The Ducks are going to be sizeable favorites this weekend in Berkley. Let’s take a look at how the betting market opened up to start the week.

Game time released for Oregon’s matchup with California Golden Bears

Another mid-day kick for the Ducks, as well as another nationally televised game. Fans and media members rejoice.

It appears that the Pac-12 conference is doing what it can in order to get as many eyes on the Oregon Ducks as possible.

This week, after putting No. 9 Oregon’s bout with the No. 10 UCLA Bruins at 12:30 p.m. kick on FOX — a game that will draw ESPN’s College GameDay to Eugene — the Ducks are getting another mid-day kick next week against the California Golden Bears, again on FOX.

This will be the fourth time this season that Oregon will appear on FOX, and should make a lot of fans, and media members, happy that the game will not hear the final whistle come late at night, as we’ve seen with some Pac-12 games that draw few eyeballs starting as late as 11 p.m. on the east coast.

Here are all of the kick-off times for the Pac-12 slate of games through October 27-29.

Know your foe, Cal: Five Golden Bears that could give Notre Dame problems

These Bears have sharp claws

The Irish enter week three with tempered expectations. It’s been a rough go for Marcus Freeman and although Notre Dame enters this contest 0-2 and California is 2-0, the Irish are still favorites at home. The Golden Bears wins haven’t come against teams that would scare many teams, so there is some talent on their squad. Here are five Bears that could give Notre Dame problems on Saturday.

Top 20 schools with the most College World Series appearances

With the College World Series set to get underway, here’s a look at the 20 schools with the most appearances all-time. Where do the Sooners 11 appearances rank?

The Oklahoma Sooners are set to embark on another quest in their journey to become the 2022 national champions. Opening the College World Series against Texas A&M, the Sooners look to continue the level of play that carried them to a Big 12 tournament title and to series wins on the road in Gainesville and Blacksburg.

The Sooners haven’t had the easy path but they’ve made a habit of rising to the challenge of being the underdog and head to Omaha in the same boat. But with their performance on the field, they’ve shown that they’re a team to be reckoned with in the College World Series and have just as good a shot as anyone in the field.

The Sooners haven’t been to the College World Series since 2010. They’re one of three teams in the history of college baseball to make more than 10 appearances but hold a losing record in the CWS. The other two are Florida and Mississippi State. The Sooners have a chance to get to .500 record with a win against Texas A&M on Friday and remove themselves from that distinction.

The Texas Longhorns are No. 1 all-time with 38 appearances and have the most CWS wins in the history of the sport with 88. Texas also holds the dubious distinction for most losses in the College World Series with 63.

Among schools with at least 10 appearances, the USC Trojans hold the best winning percentage at .740 and the most CWS titles.

As the College World Series gets underway on Friday, here are the 20 teams with the most College World Series appearances all-time.

Where did the Celtics’ Jaylen Brown go to college?

The Celtics All-Star was a 5-star recruit out of high school.

If you clicked on this headline, chances are you’re like the rest of us on the East who refuse to stay up late for Pac-12 basketball. And that’s your first hint as to where Boston Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown went to college.

The answer is he went to University of California (Berkeley), otherwise known as Cal. A five-star recruit from Georgia and McDonald’s All-American, the explosive athlete only needed one year of college — another reason you might’ve missed him.

Brown started all 34 games for Cal in 2015-16, helping lead the Bears to a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. He was the team’s second-leading scorer and rebounder at 14.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Brown struggled in the team’s first-round loss to Hawaii, scoring just four points on 1-of-6 shooting before fouling out. That was his final college game, as he entered the 2016 NBA Draft and the Celtics selected him third overall. The following year, the team landed Jayson Tatum at the same spot in the draft, forming the dynamic duo that has now led the Celtics to an NBA Finals.

The Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list for 2022 is released

The first watch list of the college football season is out with the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.

As the temperatures begin rising and the summer months come our way, the reminders that another college football season is on the way continue to roll out. While it will still be some time before we hit our stride with watch list season later this summer, the Lott IMPACT Trophy got the ball rolling this week with the release of its watch list for the upcoming college football season.

A total of 42 players appear on the watch list for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which is awarded to one of the nation’s top defensive players in the country with a special focus on an individual’s character and impact on the field. Penn State cornerback [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] is the lone Nittany Lion appearing on the watch list for the award going into the 2022 season.

Last year’s winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy was Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. It was the second season in a row that a Big Ten player won the award, following Northwestern linebacker Paddy Fisher in 2020.

Penn State has one Lott IMPACT Trophy award winner in program history. [autotag]Carl Nassib[/autotag] received the award in 2015.

Four-star cornerback Jasiah Wagoner earns an Oklahoma offer

The Oklahoma Sooners send offer to the Pacific Northwest for four-star cornerback Jasiah Wagoner.

Here at Sooners Wire, we’ve documented just how different the recruiting strategy has been for the Oklahoma Sooners in short order under Brent Venables.

For most of the new staff, their recruiting prowess and success have been on targeting the southeastern. They’ve maintained a similar strategy for the most part, targeting their old stomping grounds from their time at Clemson.

However, that doesn’t mean they’ll ignore other regions like the Pacific Northwest, which is where the latest Oklahoma offer is headed.

Four-star corner Jasiah Wagoner hails from Spanaway, Washington, and reeled in an offer from cornerbacks coach Jay Valai recently. Wagoner is a playmaker on the backend and showcases the ability to attack the ball in the air. He isn’t afraid at all of getting his pads on someone, making plays as a tackler. Wagoner also made plays as a receiver and on special teams as a punt returner.

The list of offers that have been sent to cornerbacks for the 2023 class has erupted to 19 and the Sooners look determined to sign multiple players considering they could lose at least two or three cornerbacks following the 2023 season and that’s not accounting for possible transfers.

Ducks ninth inning rally falls just short in weird game at PK Park

Oregon wasn’t able too overcome Hance Smith’s 7 RBI performance as Cal salvaged one over the weekend with a 9-8 win.

It’s probably safe to say California second baseman Hance Smith is the first Pac-12 player to be robbed of a home run and then hit an inside-the-park grand slam in the same game.

The Golden Bears scored five in the eighth and then had to hang on to dear life in the ninth as they avoided a sweep at the hands of the Ducks with a 9-8 win Sunday afternoon at PK Park.

With the loss, Oregon falls to 28-15 overall and 13-8 in conference play.

The Ducks were up 5-3 going into the eighth inning and they brought in closer Kolby Somers for the six-out save. Unfortunately, things unraveled on Somers quickly. Cal scored one and still had the bases juiced when Smith hit a pop fly down the right field line. Anthony Hall was shaded into the gap and had to sprint to even have a chance at catching the fly ball.

Hall actually over ran the ball as it bounced behind him and he fell to the turf. Meanwhile, Smith was able to circle the bases. Those were RBIs 4-7 for him on the day as he had a sacrifice fly and a two-run single earlier in the contest.

That sacrifice fly was nearly a three-run homer, but Colby Shade was able to reach over the wall and bring it back.

Down 9-6 heading into the ninth inning, Oregon was able to mount a rally that eventually saw the potential winning run reach second base, but not before some fireworks.

It looked like Gavin Grant had swung at strike three, but the first base umpire ruled he checked his swing. That sent California into an uproar and coach Mike Neu was thrown out.

Grant made the most out of his second chance and line one through the legs of Hance Smith and two runs scored. But Tanner Smith grounded out to first to end the game.

Oregon now has prepare for a huge week of baseball as the Ducks and Beavers will meet up for four games, one non-conference contest on Tuesday in Eugene and three Pac-12 games in Corvallis over the weekend.

Oregon cruises past the Bears 8-3 with a five-run first inning

Oregon scored five runs in the first and cruised to an 8-3 win over California at PK Park.

Oregon Ducks baseball coach Mark Wasikowski probably prefers his offense to spread the runs out a bit more, but as long as the Ducks win, it doesn’t matter all that much.

A five-run first inning gave the Ducks the upper hand and Oregon was able to cruise to a relatively easy 8-3 win over California on a blustery day at PK Park. With the win, the Ducks improved to 28-14 overall and 13-7 in conference play.

Oregon starting pitcher Isaac Ayon pitched six solid innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out seven. He earned his third win of the season.

It didn’t look good for Ayon early on as he gave up a lead-off homer and a double in the first inning. But he was able to settle down and held the Bears off the scoreboard other than that home run.

That was all the Oregon offense needed to get to off the deck in the bottom of the first. The Ducks used three doubles and three singles to score five runs and that was more than enough for Ayon.

Cal scored single runs in the second and third. The Ducks scored a run in the second and at the end of three, it was 6-3 Oregon. It stayed that way until the seventh when the Ducks were able to score two insurance runs on Tanner Smith’s single to left that drove in Anthony Hall and Gavin Grant.

The Ducks will go for the sweep Sunday at noon as they will send out Jace Stoffal to the mound. The Bears haven’t announced their starter.
