What draft experts said about Titans EDGE Caleb Murphy in scouting reports

Multiple experts projected Titans UDFA Caleb Murphy to be selected in the 2023 NFL draft.

If there’s one Tennessee Titans undrafted free agent signing who has caught the attention of fans and media, it’s Ferris State edge rusher, Caleb Murphy.

That attention comes from the fact that Murphy tallied an NCAA record 25.5 sacks in his final season with the Bulldogs. As a junior, he finished with 15, giving him an impressive 40.5 sacks over his final two collegiate seasons.

The knock on those numbers, of course, is that Murphy tallied them at a D2 school. However, at least he dominated that level of competition, am I right?

Nevertheless, the 6-foot-3, 254-pound EDGE enters a fairly favorable situation with the Titans, a team that needs to lock down a fourth outside linebacker outside of Harold Landry, Arden Key and Rashad Weaver.

In my way-too-early 53-man roster projection, I have Murphy grabbing that final spot at outside linebacker, but there’s a long way to go with OTAs, mandatory minicamp and training camp still to come.

In order to get more information on the Ferris State product, we’ve rounded up some scouting reports to get a feel for how experts viewed him prior to the draft. A few of them even had Murphy being drafted.

Caleb Murphy named Titans UDFA signing to watch

Ferris State EDGE Caleb Murphy was recently named the one Titans UDFA to watch.

The Tennessee Titans have been busying signing undrafted free agents, but one in particular has caught the eye of an analyst from our friends over at Draft Wire.

According to our undrafted free agent tracker, which covers every Titans UDFA signing that has been reported, the team has inked around 15 undrafted free agents since the culmination of the 2023 NFL draft.

Among those players reportedly signed is edge rusher Caleb Murphy out of Ferris State, who was listed as the one to watch from that group by Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon. Here are his thoughts on Murphy:

Murphy set the NCAA record with 25.5 sacks in one season, dominating the edge for the D-II national champs. He’s got some athletic stiffness, but his length and finishing ability give Murphy a chance to make it as a pass rush specialist who can play both standing up or with a hand in the dirt.

What’s notable in that write-up aside from gaudy sack numbers is Murphy’s ability to play standing up and with his hand in the dirt. As we know, head coach Mike Vrabel loves guys he can move around, something we’ve seen upfront on defense especially.

The Titans lost a pair of pass-rushers this offseason in defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker and outside linebacker Bud Dupree, but they did add Arden Key and are getting Harold Landry back from a torn ACL.

However, Key and Rashad Weaver, who figures to fill in as the No. 3 on the depth chart behind Landry and Key, have never been full-time players, and Landry may not be himself in his first year back.

As a result, the Titans need to make sure they give themselves options behind those three, which opens the door for a rookie edge rusher like Murphy.

Assuming they last through the rest of the offseason program, which is no given, Murphy will be competing for a roster spot in training camp with guys like Zach McCloud and Sam Okuayinonu, among others.

Lions meet with record-setting Ferris State EDGE Caleb Murphy

Murphy set the NCAA record for sacks in a single season with 25.5 for the national champions in D-II

With one of their recent pre-draft meetings, the Detroit Lions spent some time getting to know the man who set the NCAA record for sacks in a single season.

The Lions had a pre-draft visit with EDGE Caleb Murphy from Ferris State. The D-II standout bagged a college-record 25.5 sacks in 2022 for the national champion Bulldogs. Murphy acknowledged the meeting in an interview with Justin Melo from The Draft Network.

A 6-foot-3, 254-pound stand-up rusher, Murphy lit up D-II with 60 plays behind the line of scrimmage over the last two seasons. He also met with the Lions at the Shrine Bowl, where he held his own in team drills.

Having seen Murphy in person for both Ferris State and archrival Grand Valley State — he transferred three years ago to play with his younger brother — he reminds me of a bigger version of Detroit’s James Houston. While not as fast off the blocks, Murphy has the same speed-to-power type of game and is an exceptional finisher of pressures and run plays. Murphy projects as a 7th-round pick or a priority free agent.

5 late-round prospects who deserve more love in the 2023 NFL draft

Our Jeff Risdon offers up 5 Day 3 prospects who deserve more love in the 2023 NFL draft

It can be hard to remember that the NFL draft extends out to seven rounds. Much of the focus goes to the first couple of rounds, the realm where teams are selecting mostly players that fans watched excel in college and all-star games. The later rounds don’t get as much recognition, often featuring prospects that are more under the national radar.

Here are five players who generally project in the final rounds of the draft, or perhaps even as a priority free agent, who should be ranked higher or shown more pre-draft love.

2023 NFL draft: 10 potential Chargers targets to watch at East-West Shrine Bowl

The Chargers have used the East-West Shrine Bowl to find some of their players in recent years.

This showcase will feature several prospects the Chargers should have on their radar in the 2023 NFL draft.

In 2022, Tom Telesco selected two players that played in the game – Ja’Sir Taylor and Zander Horvath. Additional alumni include Trey Pipkins, Easton Stick, Cortez Broughton, and Justin Jackson.

With that, here are ten players the Bolts could be targeting:
