Notre Dame 24, Cal 17: Irish reCalibrate with win

It wasn’t a masterpiece but it was a victory and the importance of that can’t be overstated.

It’s not going to win any awards for being overly pretty, gorgeous or even memorable necessarily, but it will go down as the one that at least stopped the bleeding. Notre Dame beat Cal, 24-17, at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday.

The win came in what was [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag]’s first career start and in the early parts of the contest it was fitting he was wearing green with some of the mistakes and misfires. He calmed the nerves, however, and finished the day 17-of-23 for 150 yards and a two touchdowns.

[autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag] had seemed underutilized in the first two games but came up large on Saturday, scoring on a 21-yard touchdown reception in the first half. The junior speedster finished with 108 yards while [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] led all rushers with 76 yards. He also hauled in three catches for 43 yards.

[autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] had two receptions, but the second was huge. His six-yard touchdown reception put Notre Dame ahead, 24-17, the eventual final score.

The win is the first for Marcus Freeman as head coach at Notre Dame and a building block. We’ll have plenty of postgame reaction at Fighting Irish Wire as the Hail Mary for Cal wasn’t answered as time expired.

Notre Dame vs Cal Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

No pressure or anything, but how’s this all going, Notre Dame?

Marcus Freeman is the first Notre Dame head coach to lose his first three games – going back to the bowl game last year – QB Tyler Buchner is likely out for the year with a shoulder injury, the College Football Playoff is almost certainly gone, and there’s no conference title to play for, and …

Cal can come in loose against a team that desperately needs a big performance.

The Bears haven’t shown much offensively against UC Davis and UNLV, but the passing game has been fine, the defense has been okay, and the team knows how to control the clock and the tempo.

Notre Dame’s offense didn’t do much of anything against Ohio State, the three turnovers against Marshall were a killer, and again, this is going to be one tight teams that plays with desperation. If Cal can get up early, it’s going to make things very, very interesting.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Cal isn’t doing anything amazing.

It played two teams it should’ve rolled over, and the secondary wasn’t great, the defense overall wasn’t special, and the pass protection has been missing.

This is where the Irish defense needs to take over. The offense is scuffling as it’s trying to find something that consistently works, but the D has been great, all things considered.

Cal isn’t going to come out and light it up. As long as the Irish can get out to a decent start – the running game should be able to push for five yards per carry – the D should be able to take care of the rest.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Marcus Freeman will get his first win.

Cal doesn’t haven enough offensive pop, and the defense isn’t as good as it should be. Turnovers have been a bit of an issue, there’s not enough of a ground game, and now it’s Drew Pyne’s time. Tyler Buchner wasn’t bad, but the offense needs a spark.

The passing game will be better, the defense will step up, and the pressure will be released – at least for this week.

Know your foe, Cal: Five Golden Bears that could give Notre Dame problems

These Bears have sharp claws

The Irish enter week three with tempered expectations. It’s been a rough go for Marcus Freeman and although Notre Dame enters this contest 0-2 and California is 2-0, the Irish are still favorites at home. The Golden Bears wins haven’t come against teams that would scare many teams, so there is some talent on their squad. Here are five Bears that could give Notre Dame problems on Saturday.

Notre Dame-Cal: Do Irish finally find the win column?

Do the Irish finally find the win column?

We certainly didn’t expect to be here two weeks into the season but here we are.  Notre Dame is 0-2, is fresh off getting pushed around by Marshall, and is an 11 point favorite against a 2-0 Cal team despite averaging just 15.5 points per game to date.

Oh, and Notre Dame is now playing with their backup quarterback who is a junior but has completed 20 of 39 career pass attempts and thrown all of three touchdowns in his time.

“The pilot has turned on the fasten seatbelts sign.  Please return to your seats as we’ll be experiencing (more) turbulence.”

So what happens against Cal?  Does Notre Dame change the narrative of the 2022 season and get in the win column?  Or does Cal come to Notre Dame Stadium and shove the Irish around on both lines of scrimmage like Marshall did last Saturday?

Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire staff sees happening Saturday:

Jeff Feyerer (1-1):

Blink twice and everything we thought this season was going to be has changed. This was never going to be easy. This was never going to be a title team. I just didn’t expect we’d be at 0-2 without a starting quarterback. Granted, my concern from the start was Tyler Buchner’s ability to stay healthy. Drew Pyne has proven in moments he can rally the troops and this Irish team is far more talented than the Cal Bears. At home, I expect Freeman to help his squad bounce back from a demoralizing loss to Marshall. I expect the run game to explode and the defense to lead the way. I’m choosing to remain optimistic, but realize, I may be asking too much. This is not an 0-3 team. And I don’t anticipate that will be the case on Saturday.

Notre Dame football adds names to back of jerseys (for this week at least)

“I don’t care if they play in purple and have someone else’s name on their back, just win baby” – Me if this game is close in the 3rd quarter

We’ve known for a couple of months now that Notre Dame was going to wear green during the “Irish Wear Green” game for 2022, a first, as ridiculous as that sounds.  What we didn’t know was that there would be a slight twist to the green jerseys for this game as they’ll feature last names on the back.

The Notre Dame football Twitter account showed off what the Irish uniforms will look like on Saturday and they have that feature that is usually only reserved for bowl games.  Take a look at the set of photos that Notre Dame’s social media team provided below.

I know some people really like these but the white letters now have me wondering if white numerals wouldn’t look (significantly) better.

Whatever the case or your thoughts on the green jerseys, just get a stinking win on Saturday.

Please.

Notre Dame starting quarterback out for the year

Pyne time. How you feeling?

One of the most asked questions by Notre Dame fans this offseason was if quarterback [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] could stay healthy for an entire season. Unfortunately we already have that answer, and we’re only through two games, which means just one thing.

Nope.

Buchner left Saturday’s loss to Marshall with a shoulder injury and we now know he suffered a high grade shoulder strain that will require surgery according to [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]. The sophomore quarterback’s season is officially done.

Now enter [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag], who went 3 of 6 passing with a touchdown and interception in relief duty against Marshall. The junior quarterback stepped in effectively enough to help beat Wisconsin last season, but is just 20 of 39 (51.3%) passing in his career for 256 yards (6.6 average), three touchdowns and an interception.

Since Buchner completed his first pass attempt of 2022 for 54 yards to [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag], Notre Dame quarterbacks have gone 30 of 55 for 344 yards (6.25 average) with one touchdown and three interceptions.

See Notre Dame’s entire updated depth chart for the Cal game here.

Cal vs UNLV Game Preview

Why UNLV Will Win

Did the Rebels turn a corner?

It might have only been against Idaho State, but the offense was outstanding, the passing game unstoppable, and the team showed off playmakers.

The Cal defense is a whole lot better than the one the Bengals brought to Vegas, but Doug Brumfield hit 21-of-25 passes, he found the deep plays, and now he has to test it out and keep firing.

Cal was just okay on the ground in the 34-13 win over UC Davis, the offense wasn’t all that sharp – it was down early, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Cal Will Win

The Bears might not pretty, but they’re going to be effective this season.

Purdue transfer Jack Plummer started out strong against the Aggies, the defense didn’t exactly unleash all it can do – and it was still fine – and UNLV is about to deal with a whole other level of D.

The UC Davis running game worked, but the Rebel offensive line will have a hard time finding room to move, the Bear offense should be able to control the clock for stretches, and Plummer will start pushing the ball downfield a bit more.

That was a timing game. Cal played like a team that needed the warm up, and now …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Can UNLV really rise up and maintain the same level it showed against Idaho State? No, but it’s a far better team than the 2020 version and won’t be an easy pushover for the Bears.

There’s not going to be anything flashy about Cal, but its style has to work.

It has to get the ground game going a little better than it did against UC Davis, Plummer has to avoid mistakes, and the D has to raise its game a few notches.

All of those things will happen.

Cal vs UC Davis Game Preview

Why UC Davis Will Win

The Aggies aren’t going to be any sort of a pushover.

They have the defense that can hold up, the running game will be solid, and like last year, they’re going to have one of those teams that keeps finding ways to stay in games.

They don’t fumble the ball, don’t get hit with a lot of penalties, and they’re good at keeping the chains moving.

This is an ever-evolving Cal team that needs to find some semblance of a consistent offense, and …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Cal Will Win

The Bears have to run the ball.

Purdue transfer Jack Plummer is a good quarterback who can spread the ball around, but the Bears need to hammer away on a UC Davis run defense that will once again give up yards in chunks.

Keep feeding the ball to the rotation of back, hope the linebacking corps – helped by the addition of Washington transfer Jackson Sirmon – can be fantastic, and make the Aggies press.

As long as the Bears don’t give UC Davis a slew of breaks and easy chances, they should be okay.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

UC Davis is going to be an annoying out.

It’s going to get into the backfield with a whole lot of pressure, and it’s going to run the ball. However, it’ll also throw three picks that Cal will convert into points.

This might not be the prettiest win for the Bears, but after losing the last two season openers they’ll take the W before getting UNLV.

Pac-12 Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Pac-12 preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

Forget all the monster changes, moves, and speculation about the future for a moment. This year should be a whole lot of fun for a few key reasons.

USC is going to be a blast – there’s going to be as much attention on the football teams, at least for a few months before expansion talk cranks up even more – and the divisions are going bye-bye.

There’s no more Pac-12 North and South with the goal to win the six-team division. Now the conference race comes down to who the top two teams are overall, and it should mean the season comes down to the last day of the regular season.

The schedules play a massive role.

Who misses USC? Who has to play Utah in Salt Lake City? Who has to travel late in the season, and who has to make a longer road trip? It all matters in the 2022 Pac-12 college football predictions for every game.
