In case you hadn’t heard, Cal Haladay was raised on a chicken farm. This was a fact that we were reminded all year about the Michigan State football linebacker who would play without any gloves, bands, etc. Now, there will be a new factoid to read off about Haladay: he is a 2021 freshman all-american.

Haladay is the only Spartan to make the team this year, joining Eric Gentry of ASU and Junior Colson of Michigan as the linebackers on the squad.

Haladay racked up an impressive 78 tackles on the season to go along with an interception (for a touchdown), a fumble recovery and half of a sack.

Michigan State football LB Cal Haladay named to Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watch list

Cal Haladay has been a huge surprise this season for Michigan State football. The farm-raised linebacker who doesn’t wear any gloves, arm wraps or anything has come out of nowhere this year to help lead the Spartans’ defense, and his stellar play could earn him some hardware at the end of the season.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Haladay has made the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watch list. This will be the fourth year of this award.

Haladay will go up against star players like C.J. Stroud, TreVeyon Henderson and more for the honor.

Cal Haladay puts the Spartans on the board with a pick-six!

Michigan State is in the midst of a rivalry contest against the Indiana Hoosiers for the Old Brass Spittoon trophy.

With the offense struggling early on in the game, the defense needed to help give the team a boost and they did just that.

On a key third down play, Cal Haladay showed blitz, but backed away and read the play perfectly leading to an interception that he would return to the house for a touchdown.

Film Sessions: 5 takeaways from Michigan State football’s 2-0 start

5 takeaways from MSU’s 2-0 start when we broke down the film

Michigan State is off to a 2-0 start in the second year of the Mel Tucker era in East Lansing. Two wins matches the amount of wins the team had a year ago, when they went 2-5 in a COVID shortened season.

The best part of MSU’s 2-0 start is that both wins came pretty convincingly and the Spartans dominated both games.

A lot has gone right for the Spartans as they walked into Ryan Field and beat the defending Big Ten West champion Northwestern Wildcats 38-21, and followed it with a 42-14 win over Youngstown State.

We took a look at the film from those two games, and have come away with five big takeaways:

Michigan State opened the 2021 season with a huge conference road win against the Northwestern Wildcats. The Spartans defense only gave up 21 points in the win.

With over 15 new players, there was a lot for Spartan fans to get used to, especially the new faces.

He was not necessarily a new face, as he was a member of the 2020 recruiting class, but he was not expected to be a starter like he was on Friday night. That ‘he’ is redshirt freshman Cal Haladay, who got one of the to linebacker starting spots to open the season.

Not only did Haladay start, but he made the most of the opportunity he was presented with, having a great first game. He played so well that Pro Football Focus rated him the highest of any Spartan defender.

Look for Haladay to continue making an impact for the Spartans defense.
