Clemson’s 2022 quarterback commit garnered a huge honor on Thursday when he was named Offensive Football Player of the Year by the USA Today High School Sports Awards.

It’s been quite the summer for Cade Klubnik, who was recently rated as a five-star by 247Sports. Late last month, MaxPreps ranked the future Tiger as the No. 4 overall player in the country heading into the upcoming season.

This was prior to Klubnik earning MVP honors at the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles.

Last season, he led Westlake High School to its second straight 6A State Championship. In doing so, he completed 68% of his passes for 3,495 yards and 35 touchdowns with just three interceptions, he also rushed for 583 yards and added 15 more scores on the ground.

The five-star quarterback currently ranks as the No. 1 quarterback in the country and No. 36 player nationally regardless of position in the Class of 2022, according to 247Sports’ recruiting rankings.

Four-star receiver blown away by Clemson visit

Clemson played host this past week to a big-time wide receiver prospect from the state of Texas.

Del Valle High School 2023 four-star wide receiver Braylon James traveled to campus for an unofficial visit and saw all the Tigers have to offer and then some.

On his visit to Tiger Town, James was accompanied by his mother, father and sister. He had an opportunity to do almost everything, except talk to a professor. Everyone in the James family certainly enjoyed themselves, though.

“They really like it there, they want to see what my future holds there,” James told The Clemson Insider.

Clemson exceeded James’s expectations. He knew it was going to be “really cool,” but he didn’t expect to be blown away like he was. The Tigers truly blew it out of the water.

“I really enjoyed everything, I know that’s kind of like cliche, but honestly they did a really good job,” Jame said. “As far as what I enjoyed the most though, it was probably the whole P.A.W. Journey part of the visit.

“Not a lot of people would say that, but that’s something that really stood out to me, as far as internships and player development like mentally and stuff like that. That piece was really cool and something I’ve never seen at any other school. That was definitely something that I took away from the whole entire visit. I’m really looking forward to learning more about that.”

James’s visit up to Clemson also presented him the chance to meet Tyler Grisham for the first time in person. His connection with Clemson’s wide receivers coach made him more than eager to visit.

“It was huge. Over the phone, we had a really good relationship, but just meeting him in person, everything was organic,” James said. “Nothing was really forced. He gave the same energy he gave over the phone. I feel like me and my family, we really just hit it off with him and that’s just something that was really huge in my recruiting process.

“With most coaches, they act one way over the phone and they act differently in person. Just seeing that he acted the same way was really cool and that was also very huge for me. He’s a really great guy, a really good coach. I appreciate him.”

James did hear about a potential offer.

Right before he left, Grisham mentioned to James that he really wanted to offer him. While that offer didn’t come, James didn’t take it personally. He believes the whole staff wants to see more from him, which he views as “respectable.”

He’s looking forward to working towards that Clemson offer.

“It was a really humbling experience,” James said, “Just seeing that everything isn’t given and it’s giving me something to look forward to this season. So, I can go out and earn that offer, potentially making Clemson a huge target on my list for destinations.”

James thinks it more so has to do with how he progresses across this upcoming season and less to do with him working out in front of Clemson’s coaching staff.

“I think they feel like my play really spoke for itself,” he added. “They just wanted to see more on film. They may want me to come back and workout, but I don’t think it’ll come down to that…You never know, but I really think it was a whole film thing. I think they were gonna come down to watch us play against Westlake. Coach Swinney was kind of talking about that in the brief conversation that we had.”

Westlake, of course, is Cade Klubnik’s high school. The five-star quarterback and Clemson Class of 2022 commit has become closer with James over the past year or so. Those Austin roots run deep and Grisham will likely come down to watch the Tigers’ future quarterback and potentially a future target of his.

In addition to Grisham, James also got his first chance to meet Dabo Swinney.

“As far as offering, he wasn’t really talking about that,” James said. “He was just talking about his experience at Clemson…and also the whole family piece. He’s always relating back to that. He was also talking about how he likes to have a lot of his alumni on the coaching staff. That was really huge.”

James is unsure of a specific date, but he ensured that he’s “definitely coming back to Clemson” for a game this upcoming season.

“Clemson was a really nice spot and it’s something that I definitely want to see again,” he added.

As far as his recruitment currently stands, James is taking a patient approach. He’s waiting until Sept. 1, when coaches can finally start contacting him and communication can be a two-way street.

James mentioned Stanford, Cal and Texas A&M as schools that are really doing a good job of recruiting him and making the effort to reach out.

He didn’t want to leave Clemson out either, giving Grisham his due.

“I want to say that Coach Grisham is doing the same thing as well,” James said. “That’s why Clemson is pretty high on my list. Even though I don’t have an offer from there, Coach Grisham is making it a priority to build a relationship with me and my family, so that’s really cool.”

Elite TE Delp talks to TCI about All In Cookout

The Clemson football program hosted its signature summer recruiting event, the All In Cookout, on Sunday.

Among the Tigers’ priority targets in attendance was one of the nation’s top tight ends, Oscar Delp.

The Clemson Insider caught up with the four-star and top-100 national prospect from Cumming (Ga.) West Forsyth about his experience at the cookout.

“It was fun,” he said. “Good time getting out there and hanging out with all the players and all the coaches.”

Delp, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound rising senior in the class of 2022, made the trip to Tiger Town for the cookout with his mother.

“It was just me and my mom, and she enjoyed it as well,” he said.

The cookout gave him a good chance to continue building a bond with some of Clemson’s 2022 commitments, especially Austin (Texas) Westlake four-star quarterback Cade Klubnik and Myrtle Beach (S.C.) four-star wide receiver Adam Randall.

“I’m pretty familiar with some of them, so I was really hanging out with Cade Klubnik and Adam Randall,” Delp said. “I’ve already been with them a couple times at some different events this summer. So, it was good to see them again.”

Klubnik, one of Clemson’s best recruiters among the commits, is making his pitch to Delp and would love to have him as a weapon to throw to at Death Valley in the future.

“He thinks that we’d be a good combination in college together,” Delp said. “He really wants me to be a part of a team with him.”

Dabo Swinney and Clemson’s staff reiterated to Delp that he is a top priority for the Tigers and rolled out the orange carpet for him again while he was on campus Sunday.

“[The coaches said] that I’m just the guy that they want, and they were going to show me everything that Clemson has to offer,” Delp said. “Just making me feel at home.”

It marked the second visit to Clemson in as many months for Delp, who also traveled to campus during the Swinney Football Camp in June.

Did the All In Cookout change anything about where the Tigers stand with him?

“They’re still near the top of my list,” he said. “I’m just waiting to get out to games and see everywhere in a gameday atmosphere now. But it was a good visit.”

Delp, the nephew of former Clemson wide receiver James Chappell, is ranked as the nation’s No. 2 tight end in the 2022 class by Rivals and 247Sports — the latter of which considers him the No. 71 overall prospect in the country regardless of position.

He passed for 220 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns in the state championship game while playing through a shoulder injury.

Klubnik was also recently named MVP of the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder is ranked as high as the No. 4 pro-style quarterback and No. 28 overall prospect in the 2022 class by Rivals. He committed to the Tigers in March.

ESPN recently updated its ESPN 300 rankings for the 2022 class, and Clemson’s quarterback commitment is one of the big risers in the new rankings.

Austin (Texas) Westlake four-star quarterback Cade Klubnik was previously ranked as the No. 136 overall prospect in the 2022 class, but jumped up to No. 76 overall following his stellar performance at the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles earlier this month.

Klubnik was named Most Valuable Player of the Elite 11 Finals, beating out a bunch of the nation’s other top QB prospects in the 2022 class to take home the award.

As a junior last season, Klubnik led Westlake High School to its second straight 6A state championship, completing 68 percent of his passes for 3,495 yards and 35 touchdowns with just three interceptions while also rushing for 583 yards and 15 more scores on the ground.

The 2022 ESPN 300 also features several other Clemson commits, including Greenville (S.C.) four-star offensive lineman Collin Sadler (No. 113), Myrtle Beach (S.C.) four-star wide receiver Adam Randall (No. 117), Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star defensive end Jihaad Campbell (No. 124), Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith four-star safety Sherrod Covil (No. 172) and Strongsville (Ohio) four-star offensive lineman Blake Miller (No. 254).

Cade Klubnik wins Elite 11 Finals MVP, makes Texas and Clemson History

Austin native Cade Klubnik is the Elite 11 Finals MVP. See how he made history for the state of Texas and Clemson’s program:

The Elite 11 competition was founded in 1999 and is considered a truly exclusive and elite fraternity to be a part of.

After over 500 quarterbacks try out across the country, it is narrowed down to the 20 best quarterbacks within that particular recruiting class. The top 20 selected attend the Elite 11 Finals to compete for one of the 11 spots to become an official Elite 11 member. They each get the chance to compete for the MVP of the competition as well. This spot is earned by the quarterback who succeeds across all of the challenges and tasks they endure.

Four-star quarterback Cade Klubnik out of Westlake, Texas won the Elite 11 Finals MVP and beat out the nation’s top quarterbacks in the 2022 class such as Ohio State commit Quinn Ewers and Texas commit Maalik Murphy. He seemingly was in control from the very first day, as he never fell from the top spot. Klubnik proved himself every chance he got.

By winning the Elite 11 MVP, the Clemson commit made history hailing from the state of Texas. Klubnik joins Rhett Bomar (2003) and current NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford (2005) as the only Elite 11 MVP’s from the state of Texas. Clemson has had great quarterbacks grace their campus with the likes of Trevor Lawrence, Deshaun Watson, Tajh Boyd, and Chad Kelly who competed at the Elite 11, but none of them were able to win the MVP award.

A feat that Klubnik was awarded in dominant fashion. The Tigers currently have D.J. Uiagalelei behind center, but when his time to go to the NFL comes, they will certainly be in good hands with Klubnik.

Is Notre Dame getting left behind in the 2022 race for quarterback recruits?

With multiple quarterbacks making commitments in the 2022 class, should Notre Dame fans fear the Irish will be left behind?

Another quarterback domino fell yesterday as Clemson received a commitment from Texas quarterback Cade Klubnik. Alabama recently receiver a commitment from Tennessee’s Ty Simpson, who considered the Irish but ultimately choose between the Tiger and Crimson Tide. The other 2020 College Football Playoff participant Ohio State, they have a commit from Texas’ Quinn Ewers, the top rated player in the nation. All three of them are considered top-100 prospects.

[lawrence-related id=26038]

Notre Dame, well, they’ve yet to grab a quarterback in their 2022 class and their options are dwindling down. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, the top 8 quarterback have now committed, but this doesn’t mean doom and gloom for the Irish.

Kentucky’s Gavin Wimsatt, who holds an Irish offer, is very high on Notre Dame and are viewed as one of the favorites to land his commitment. He’s considered to be a top-100 prospect.

[listicle id=24070]

Ohio’s Drew Allar, was offered by Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees last week. Allar likes the Irish along with Penn State, who recently saw 247Sports director of recruiting, Steve Wiltfong, place a prediction for Allar to end up committing to the Nittany Lions. It looks like Notre Dame has some catching up to do with Allar.

[lawrence-related id=25972]

The third option at the moment is New Jersey’s Steve Angeli, who is also extremely high on the Irish. Angeli’s courtship with Notre Dame has been going on for a while, as the offer to him went out in August of last year, the same day as Wimsatt received his. All 6 of the crystal ball predictions logged for Angeli have him ending up in South Bend.

[listicle id=24150]

I really like Angeli, I believe he has a bright future, but he isn’t my first choice, Wimsatt is. I would love to see Kelly and Rees put the full-court recruiting press on the Kentuckian and see where that takes them. If it doesn’t work out, Angeli would be a great consolation prize.

[listicle id=17189]

With the cycle being still in it’s early stages, there is some worry that the Irish will get left behind and not have one of their top choices end up in South Bend. Don’t get caught up in that, the Irish are fine and will get a very good quarterback prospect in this class.

Four-star quarterback Cade Klubnik commits to Clemson over Texas, Texas A&M

Cade Klubnik announced his commitment to Clemson on Tuesday. The Tigers offered him after missing out on five-star Ty Simpson to Alabama.

When Maalik Murphy committed to Texas in February, a two-quarterback class was not out of the question. Cade Klubnik, a four-star prospect out of Austin Westlake High School, was still in the mix. Then, Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers got involved.

Klubnik announced his commitment to the ACC powerhouse on Tuesday afternoon. Clemson offered him after missing out on five-star Ty Simpson to Alabama on Friday. Four days later, Klubnik was ready to shut down his recruitment and be the Tigers’ quarterback in the 2022 class.

Both Texas and Texas A&M were once considered the favorites for the in-state quarterback. Even with hometown programs interested, when a national power such as Clemson comes knocking, turning down the opportunity is difficult.

The recent succession of quarterbacks has been impressive for Swinney, with Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence being first-round draft picks and D.J. Uiagalelei getting ready to take the college football world by storm.

Klubnik could be next on that touted list.

With Klubnik’s commitment, the dominos have fallen with the elite quarterbacks in the 2022 class. All seven signal-callers ranked inside the top 75 on the 247Sports composite are committed.

  • No. 1 overall Quinn Ewers – Ohio State
  • No. 20 overall Gunnar Stockton – Georgia
  • No. 22 overall Walker Howard – LSU
  • No. 27 overall Ty Simpson – Alabama
  • No. 36 overall Maalik Murphy – Texas
  • No. 71 overall Conner Weigman – Texas A&M
  • No. 74 overall Cade Klubnik – Clemson

Texas had extended offers to Ewers, Klubnik, Murphy, Simpson, and Weigman. Ewers was once committed to the Longhorns before opting to head north to Columbus, Ohio. Steve Sarkisian will still push for the Southlake Carroll product, but Murphy seems to be the future of Texas’ program.

Texas Football Recruiting: Pros and cons of Maalik Murphy’s commitment

As with every recruitment, there are pros and cons of taking players into your class.

Steve Sarkisian landed his first five-star prospect as the head coach of Texas on Saturday in quarterback Maalik Murphy. Since Murphy is a California native, Sarkisian’s west coast ties were one of the biggest reasons the Longhorns were able to bring him in.

On the 247Sports composite, the quarterback ranks as the No. 30 player in the country. Murphy has been classified as a pro-style QB and is No. 2 at his position behind only Quinn Ewers. Since recruiting grades were kept, he ranks as the fourth-highest quarterback that Texas has landed.

As with every recruitment, there are pros and cons of taking players into your class. With Murphy, there are a lot more positives than negatives. He projects as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2022 recruiting cycle but his lack of experience will leave questions.

Here are the pros and cons of Maalik Murphy’s commitment to Texas.

Take a look at the top five quarterbacks that Texas has offered from the 2022 recruiting class.

The 2021 recruiting cycle will conclude in less than two weeks as the second signing day is approaching on Feb. 3.
