Will the 2024 Vikings offense have more 21 personnel?

The Minnesota Vikings were in 21 personnel less than 10 percent of the time in 2023. Will that number increase with the 2024 squad?

The best offenses in the NFL can keep defenses on their toes. Generally speaking, they achieve that by having a balanced run/pass attack, employing pre-snap motion to create favorable matchups, and having diverse personnel groupings to also create favorable matchups.

The Minnesota Vikings offense sometimes got predictable, thanks to a rather anemic rushing attack in 2023. The team made several moves in the off-season to rectify this problem, but will that lead to more personnel groupings in the Vikings offense for 2024? One Vikings beat writer seems to think it may.

The Vikings signed former Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones to improve the running game. But the pass protection skills of an in-house back have The Athletic’s Alec Lewis envisioning more 21 personnel.

In his article outlining quick thoughts on each of the 90 players currently on the Vikings roster, Lewis highlighted C.J. Ham’s consistent ability to pass protect and pondered at the idea of him and Jones being on the field together in 21 personnel:

Sneaky solid third-down pass protector. Vikings used 21 personnel 7.3 percent of the time last year, and that number could jump in 2024.

As Lewis points out, the Vikings were in 21 personnel—that is, two running backs and one tight end—less than 10 percent of the time in 2023. Adding diversity to their personnel groupings should help the team be more unpredictable next season. Whether or not that results in a better offense remains to be seen, but more options in an offense are rarely a bad thing.

Vikings make promotions within the training department and staff

The Minnesota Vikings announced on Friday of two people within their training department as the team continues to improve their treatment.

The Minnesota Vikings announced on Friday of two people within their training department as the team continues to improve their player treatment.

Matt Duhamel will be promoted to associate head athletic trainer and director of Rehabilitation, and Derik Keyes will be promoted to Director of Football Development and Assistant Performance Coach. This is all a part of new moves and promotions within the training department and coaching staff.

Duhamel is entering his 12th season with the team and has the support of the players on the roster, especially tackle Brian O’Neill.

“He’s the number one person who helped move the needle for me to have a successful and healthy season after the Achilles,” O’Neill said. “I spent every day with him from Jan. 1 through (Week 1 of the 2023 season). We spent a lot of time together, and I’m just super excited for him and his new opportunity.”

Keyes enters his ninth season with the Vikings and has just as much support from players. He has played a pivotal part in several players’ health and physical development, including fullback C.J. Ham.

“He’s been here through it all, and it speaks to the character he has, he’s proven himself to be loyal and trustworthy through all the change. . .”

It is easy to see why the team dealt with needs to promote them and keep them on staff with so much support across the roster.

C.J. Ham is headed to the 2024 Pro Bowl games!

Minnesota Vikings fullback C.J. Ham is headed to Orlando to participate in the 2024 Pro Bowl Games.

Since then, Ham has made his mark on the Vikings franchise, being voted a team captain for a third time and playing in over 100 games for the purple and gold.

“It’s such an honor to go back to the NFL Pro Bowl Games and represent the Vikings with my guys, Andrew [DePaola] and Danielle [Hunter]…In this league, to even be considered for this game is a huge honor that I definitely don’t take lightly.”

Fans can cheer on Ham, DePaola and Hunter throughout the week as the Pro Bowl Games will air their Skills Showdown on Thursday, February 1 at 6 p.m. CST (ESPN) and the Pro Bowl Games Championship on Sunday at 2 p.m. CST (ESPN, ABC, Disney XD, ESPN+, ESPN Deportes and NFL+)

The NFL recently unveiled their 2024 NFL Pro Bowl Games with the following Minnesota Vikings making the cut:

  • OLB Danielle Hunter

The Vikings also have six alternates, ranging from first to fourth at their respective positions.

The number of players may seem lower than usual, especially with wide receiver Justin Jefferson not being a part of the festivities due to injury. However, the Vikings are well-represented in that those who were selected, alternate or otherwise, certainly deserved it.

Vikings and fullback C.J. Ham agree to two-year extension

International Football Agency (IFA) announced that the Minnesota Vikings and fullback C.J. Ham have agreed to a two-year extension.

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to a two-year extension with fullback C.J. Ham, according to his representation, the Institute For Athletes.

Ham was due a $2.95 million base salary this season and would’ve had a $3.8 million cap hit, according to Over The Cap. While the details of his extension have yet to be released, this move will likely clear cap space for the Vikings.

Since signing as an undrafted free agent in 2016, Ham has been a key contributor to the Vikings, bringing versatility and leadership to the locker room while contributing to the offense and special teams units.

Last season, in his first year with new head coach Kevin O’Connell, Ham wasn’t used as much as in years past. As the offseason has progressed, the Vikings have shown with their signings that they are committed to the run for the 2023 season.
