Jaguars QB C.J. Beathard’s new contract details, value revealed

C.J. Beathard new deal includes $1 million in incentives in each of the next two seasons.

The Jacksonville Jaguars don’t have much (or any right now) cap space to work with, but decided that keeping backup quarterback C.J. Beathard was a priority anyway.

On Friday, the team announced that it kept Beathard with a new contract, less than three weeks before the veteran quarterback was set to become a free agent.

According to the contract details reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the deal is more than affordable for the Jaguars.

The deal is only slightly less than the two-year, $5 million contract Beathard signed with the Jaguars during the 2021 offseason.

While the exact cap hit won’t be revealed until there’s a better idea of the displacement of the money over the next two seasons, the contract will be a minimal burden for the Jaguars, regardless.

There’s also a chance that Beathard won’t be on the roster in the fall, as the team recently added Canadian Football League star Nathan Rourke to compete for a backup role behind Trevor Lawrence.

In two seasons with the Jaguars, Beathard has only appeared a few times in clean up duty. He’s thrown just 13 passes with the Jaguars after previously starting 12 games in four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

Jaguars re-sign backup quarterback C.J. Beathard

The Jaguars’ backup quarterback and ping-pong king is staying in Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed C.J. Beathard on Friday, less than three weeks before he was set to become a free agent. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, it’s a two-year extension for the Jaguars backup quarterback.

Beathard, 29, began his career with the San Francisco 49ers as a third-round draft pick and started 12 games over four seasons with the team. The Jaguars signed Beathard in March 2021, one month before selecting Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

In his two seasons with the Jaguars, Beathard has never started a game and has only thrown 13 total passes.

While Beathard didn’t contribute much on the field, he is unanimously considered to be the toughest to beat on the locker room ping-pong table.

The return of Beathard in 2023 sets up a battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Lawrence. In January, the Jaguars signed Canadian Football League star Nathan Rourke after the former BC Lions quarterback reportedly made a tour of 12 interested NFL teams.

Jacksonville also had undrafted free agent E.J. Perry on the practice squad all season and kept him with a futures contract.

Jaguars 2022 training camp preview: Quarterbacks

The Jags will enter camp with four quarterbacks, and of course, the most-watched one will be Trevor Lawrence.

With training camp two weeks away for the Jacksonville Jaguars, it’s time to start previewing every position on the roster. Of course, the place to start that process is the quarterback position because it’s the position that is the most important on the field.

Last season, the Jags were able to select Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick, giving the fanbase the type of elite prospect they’ve long needed to revitalize the franchise. Unfortunately, they didn’t pair him with the right coach out of the gate and ended up having to make a coaching change in December.

This time around, it appears they have a much better fit for the team in terms of the coaching change that was made as it should especially help Lawrence and the quarterbacks room as a whole. Here is a preview of the position as the Jags will enter camp with Lawrence and three other quarterbacks:

Top 5 Iowa Hawkeyes to use in EA Sports NCAA Football who never got a game

EA Sports NCAA Football was last released in 2013. Let’s look at the Hawkeyes who didn’t get a game that would be the most fun to play with.

Almost a decade to the date since the best video game of all-time was released, college football fans will soon be rejoicing as the momentum towards a new EA Sports NCAA Football game is full steam ahead.

NCAA Football ’14 released on July 9, 2013, and is still played to this day by many avid fans as it was the final college football game released amidst conversations of compensating players in the game for usage of their likenesses.

Fast forward to now, it appears that EA Sports will be bringing back NCAA Football in July of 2023. The 10-year wait for fans of all ages is almost at an end.

It has been rumored that EA Sports already has 120 FBS schools on board with the game and have begun working with them to get realistic stadium noises, music, and even chants. These schools will be paid out on a tiered basis depending on their top-25 finishes.

All of that said, there was an era from 2014-2021 that saw no NCAA Football games released. There is a large group of big time players that never saw themselves in a game. Joe Burrow from LSU’s title run in 2019, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray in Norman, Okla., Christian McCaffrey at Stanford, and many more.

The Iowa Hawkeyes also had some guys who were like real life video game characters. Who would be the five most fun Hawkeyes to play with in NCAA Football that never got a game over the past decade? Let’s discuss!

Jags QB C.J. Beathard expected to return for training camp from groin injury

Jags QB C.J. Beathard is expected to resume practicing when training camp starts after sustaining a groin injury earlier this week.

On Thursday, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson was able to provide an update on the two notable injuries that occurred earlier this week in organized team activities to outside linebacker Jordan Smith and backup quarterback C.J. Beathard. As previously reported, the former will be out for the season with a knee injury, however, the news is a bit better for the latter.

Beathard, who injured his groin and had to be carted off the field Monday, is expected to be good to go when training camp arrives next month. However, Pederson added that his progress over the summer would be a key factor in his return.

“Jordan Smith. As of right now, obviously it’s a knee injury,” Pederson said. “I believe surgery’s scheduled here in the next couple of weeks on him and obviously he’ll miss the season. C.J. [Beathard] is a little bit better, a bit better news on C.J. Again, [it’s an injury in the] lower body, groin area and he should be okay for training camp. We’ll just wait and see as it progresses over the summer.”

When looking at the experience in terms of years in the NFL, Beathard leads the Jags’ quarterbacks room in that category. He was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers out of Iowa and spent three seasons in the Bay Area.

He signed a two-year deal with the Jags last offseason but didn’t have to start in any games during his first season on the team. However, he entered this season with 12 career starts and has played in 21 games. As for his stats, he’s managed to garner a 58.7% career completion rate (293-of-499) for 3,502 yards, 13 interceptions, and 18 touchdowns.

If Beathard needs more time when training camp arrives, the Jags have good depth at the quarterback position behind Trevor Lawrence. They have third-year player Jake Luton, who has three career starts, and undrafted rookie EJ Perry.

The veterans have been given mandatory minicamp off, so Luton is also done until training camp. However, Perry will have the opportunity to continue working and will have a few more days to work with the coaches before taking his summer break.

Jags QB C.J. Beathard not expected to need surgery after groin injury

C.J. Beathard’s groin injury is believed to not be overly serious. He’s not expected to need surgery to return.

The Jacksonville Jaguars received a few scares to open the week as two players had to leave Monday’s organized team practice early due to injury. One of those players was backup quarterback C.J. Beathard, who was carted off the field by the team’s staff.

However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported some good news on the veteran’s situation Tuesday. According to him, Beathard’s injury isn’t a major one, and it’s not expected to require surgery.

With this news coming out, it appears Doug Pederson’s quarterback room will remain intact eventually heading forward, though it’s unknown how long Beathard will be out for the current phase of OTAs.

When looking at the Jags’ full quarterbacks room, Beathard has been in the league the longest (since 2017), though starter Trevor Lawrence technically has more experience when it comes to starts (17). Beathard’s 12 starts are good for second on the team in terms of the Jags’ current group of signal-callers, while Jake Luton’s three starts fall behind that.

Beathard entered this offseason with a 58.7% career completion rate (293-of-499) for 3,502 yards, 13 interceptions, and 18 touchdowns. Last season was his first with the Jags, but he previously played for the San Francisco 49ers, who drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

While Beathard’s injury isn’t believed to be serious, the Jags can take their time with his return due to having three signal-callers still available. In addition to Lawrence and Luton, the Jags also have undrafted rookie EJ Perry on the roster, who signed with the team after April’s draft.

Update provided on C.J. Beathard’s injury after he was carted from practice

C.J. Beathard’s injury has been revealed as a groin injury. The team is awaiting the results from his MRI.

Jacksonville Jaguars backup quarterback C.J. Beathard left the team’s seventh organized team activity practice early after having to be carted off the field with an unknown injury. The injury was one where he was down for a few minutes before being taken back for examinations.

However, later Monday afternoon, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was able to provide somewhat of an update. According to his sources, the injury was a groin injury, but the extent of the injury isn’t known yet as the veteran is awaiting results from an MRI.

Beathard joined the Jags last season and entered the regular season as their No. 2 quarterback behind rookie Trevor Lawrence after a strong preseason. Beathard previously played with the San Francisco 49ers before signing with the Jags and was drafted by John Lynch and Co. in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Iowa.

After being the No. 2 behind Lawrence in 2021, Beathard entered this offseason with a 58.7% completion rate (293-of-499) for 3,502 yards, 13 interceptions, and 18 touchdowns. And while he didn’t start in a single game last season, he came into this offseason with the most experience in terms of players behind Lawrence with 12 starts to his name.

The Jags entered OTAs with four quarterbacks, so they still have depth at the position if Beathard’s injury is severe. Behind Lawrence now is Jake Luton, who the Jags drafted in 2020 and has three career starts. They also have undrafted rookie EJ Perry, who the team signed after April’s draft out of Brown University.

Jags backup QB C.J. Beathard carted off field during OTAs

The Jags No. 2 QB, C.J. Beathard, was carted out of practice early Monday. The Jags also had an injury occur on defense, too, as OLB Jordan Smith had a right leg injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t reported any major injuries during organized team activities, but that may change soon. According to multiple reporters, backup quarterback C.J. Beathard was carted off the field Monday.

Beathard’s injury left him on the ground for several minutes according to those at practice Monday, but eventually, a cart was brought in to take him in for more examination.

If the injury is a serious one, the Jags could be without their most experienced backup quarterback for a while. Beathard, who was drafted in 2017 by the San Francisco 49ers out of Iowa, has started in a total of 12 games and has been in the league longer than any quarterback on the Jags’ roster. He entered this offseason with a 58.7% completion rate (293-of-499) for 3,502 yards, 13 interceptions, and 18 touchdowns.

Beathard’s injury could be a notable one for the Jags as coach Doug Pederson loves to build a strong quarterbacks room overall. However, the team did enter organized team activities with three quarterbacks behind Trevor Lawrence. In addition to Beathard, they have third-year quarterback Jake Luton and undrafted rookie EJ Perry.

There also was an injury on the defensive end on Monday as second-year edge rusher Jordan Smith also left early with a leg injury of some kind. Reporters said he had to be helped off the field and wasn’t able to return.

Jags QB C.J. Beathard set to join George Kittle and several others at TEU in June

C.J. Beathard will be joining his former Iowa and San Francisco 49ers teammate, George Kittle, for this year’s Tight End University event with many other notable players.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are currently in the second phase of their offseason workout program, which means one phase will remain before they take a break before training camp. However, as we’ve seen in recent years, many players find some way to remain busy when it comes to preparing for the season.

Players from around the league typically use the downtime before training camp to join players from around the league who play the same positions for what is labeled as “university” events. That will be the case for the tight end position as notables like George Kittle, Travis Kelce, and several others are in the process of putting together a Tight End University in Nashville for next month. And while it isn’t known if any Jags tight ends will be attending, there will be at least one player representing the team in quarterback C.J. Beathard.

In a recent interview with Pro Football Talk, Kittle told NFL journalist Mike Florio that Beathard would be one of the quarterbacks attending alongside Nick Mullens, Trey Lance, and possibly Zach Wilson and Josh Allen.

“I’ve got three [quarterbacks] confirmed for you,” Kittle said. “I’ve got my guy, C.J. Beathard. I’ve got my guy, Nick Mullens. I’ve got my guy, Trey Lance. He’s coming down to TEU. … Zach Wilson is at about 99 percent. He’s trying to decide if he wants to come back from Cabo or not. I was like, ‘Zach, you’re going to come back from Cabo.’ … And then the last one I’m working on: Josh Allen is trying to see if he can make it work.”

Kittle and Beathard attended the University of Iowa together from 2012-16. Both ended up being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 and were teammates there until 2020. The Jags then signed Beathard in 2021, and he’s been their QB2 since.

Last year, Jags tight end Chris Manhertz attended the tight end gathering after signing with the Jags last Spring. It’s unknown if he, Evan Engram, or any other Jags tight ends will attend, but it shouldn’t be long before the list is revealed.

Urban Meyer says backup QB job is still up for grabs

Urban Meyer said the competition between Gardner Minshew II and C.J. Beathard for the No. 2 quarterback spot is still very much open.

The Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff finally dispelled any notions that Trevor Lawrence won’t be their team’s starting quarterback when coach Urban Meyer named him the starter for the Week 1 game against Houston. It was a highly anticipated move although Lawrence hasn’t had the opportunity to showcase much of his skills in the preseason.

With Lawrence having secured the starting job, one might assume that Gardner Minshew II, who was at least nominally in the running to win the job, would assume the backup role. However, things may not be that cut and dry.

The Jaguars signed C.J. Beathard from San Francisco this offseason, who is an experienced backup that saw a lot of action after Jimmy Garoppolo went down last season. Beathard is being paid like a backup, and he’s been the clear standout among the quarterbacks through two preseason games.

He’s 22-of-30 passing right now for 223 yards and three touchdowns, and Meyer said that he’s still in the running with Minshew for the backup job.

“That’s open as well,” Meyer said of the No. 2 quarterback role. “Obviously, my respect for Gardner [Minshew II] has been well documented as just a warrior. Then Gardner got stuck behind some protection issues, at times [he] was running for his life back there. Then C.J. [Beathard] came in, that’s two weeks in a row. I just admire C.J., and I like C.J. as a person. He has a nice release ball, gets out fast. He played well, so yes that’s open as well.”

Given Minshew’s struggles in the preseason, the Jaguars could potentially look to move on from the third-year passer if it gets a good trade offer for him. If that doesn’t happen, though, the Jaguars will have a difficult decision to make. It is certainly possible that both players remain on the roster into the regular season, however.

Minshew will hope to make a strong statement in the final preseason game, where his role as even the backup could be on the line.
