Jags backup QB C.J. Beathard carted off field during OTAs

The Jags No. 2 QB, C.J. Beathard, was carted out of practice early Monday. The Jags also had an injury occur on defense, too, as OLB Jordan Smith had a right leg injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t reported any major injuries during organized team activities, but that may change soon. According to multiple reporters, backup quarterback C.J. Beathard was carted off the field Monday.

Beathard’s injury left him on the ground for several minutes according to those at practice Monday, but eventually, a cart was brought in to take him in for more examination.

If the injury is a serious one, the Jags could be without their most experienced backup quarterback for a while. Beathard, who was drafted in 2017 by the San Francisco 49ers out of Iowa, has started in a total of 12 games and has been in the league longer than any quarterback on the Jags’ roster. He entered this offseason with a 58.7% completion rate (293-of-499) for 3,502 yards, 13 interceptions, and 18 touchdowns.

Beathard’s injury could be a notable one for the Jags as coach Doug Pederson loves to build a strong quarterbacks room overall. However, the team did enter organized team activities with three quarterbacks behind Trevor Lawrence. In addition to Beathard, they have third-year quarterback Jake Luton and undrafted rookie EJ Perry.

There also was an injury on the defensive end on Monday as second-year edge rusher Jordan Smith also left early with a leg injury of some kind. Reporters said he had to be helped off the field and wasn’t able to return.

Former Jaguars interim coach Darrell Bevell set to land with Dolphins

Bevell is taking over as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator on Mike McDaniel’s staff in Miami.

Former Jaguars offensive coordinator — and later, interim coach — Darrell Bevell will have a fairly soft landing after he wasn’t retained by new head coach Doug Pederson.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Miami Dolphins are hiring Bevell to serve as the quarterbacks coach and passing-game coordinator under new head coach Mike McDaniel, who was previously the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.

Bevell only lasted one season with the Jaguars, as he was brought in by former coach Urban Meyer. When Meyer was let go after 13 games this season, Bevell guided the team down the stretch. Under his guidance, the team won its third game of the year in Week 18 by ending rival Indianapolis’ playoff hopes.

Regardless of the thoughts about his Jacksonville tenure, this is a move that makes quite a bit of sense for Miami, who hired a coach with just one year of coordinator experience. Bevell is a seasoned NFL play-caller who has held an offensive coordinator position in the league since 2006.

Before he was with the Jaguars, he had prior stops with Minnesota, Seattle (where he won a Super Bowl in the 2013 season), and Detroit. He also served as interim coach for the latter after Matt Patricia was fired.

The Dolphins hope that Tua Tagovailoa will develop into a franchise quarterback, and he’ll have a veteran quarterback coach to help him out.

Jags place LB Najee Goode on IR, sign safety Marcus Gilchrist

The Jags made another roster transaction this week and added some help in the secondary by placing Najee Goode (knee) on IR.

The Jacksonville Jaguars seemingly sustained a lot of injuries in Week 12’s loss against the Tennessee Titans and linebacker Najee Goode (knee) was amongst them. He was placed on injured reserve Wednesday as a result and the Jags filled his spot by signing safety Marcus Gilchrist.

It’s not known when Goode sustained the injury but it appears to be one that will take at least a week to return from based on the Jags’ transaction. He started in four total games at weak-side linebacker with rookie Quincy Williams struggling but the Jags gave Williams a lot of play time Sunday and it appears they are now comfortable with him again.

Gilchrist, 30, was drafted in the 2011 NFL Draft (No. 50 overall) out of Clemson by the San Diego Chargers but has been a journeyman throughout his career. Afterward, he spent time with the New York Jets, Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions. This season marks Gilchrist’s eighth and he will enter his tenure with 123 appearances, 98 starts, 495 total tackles, and 14 interceptions.

Gilchrist’s addition could be insurance at the safety position as starting safety Ronnie Harrison exited Sunday’s game with a concussion. While attempting to bring Titans tight end MyCole Pruitt down in the first quarter, it appears he accidentally collided with teammate Jarrod Wilson. He surfaced on Wednesday’s injury report and was projected not to practice.
