Baylor at BYU odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Baylor at BYU odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The BYU Cougars (1-0) welcome the Baylor Bears (1-0) to LaVell Edwards Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 10:15 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Baylor vs. BYU odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

BYU had a strong start to the season with a 50-21 win over South Florida in Week 1. Starting RB Christopher Brooks did most of the heavy lifting with 13 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown.

Three Cougars went for over 50 yards on the ground. Staring QB Jaren Hall was 25-for-32 passing for 261 yards and 2 touchdowns against 1 interception.

Baylor should be a far more difficult matchup, but it also didn’t get a competitive game in Week 1. The Bears beat Albany 69-10, leading 35-7 at halftime.

While a plethora of players were keys to the victory, it was redshirt sophomore QB Blake Shapen who carried most of the load, throwing for 214 yards (17-for-20) and 2 touchdowns.

Baylor is No. 8 and BYU is No. 25 in the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Baylor at BYU picks and predictions

Prediction

Baylor 31, BYU 28

Money line

LEAN BAYLOR (+110).

Baylor hasn’t lost to a non-Power 5 school in a game that wasn’t a bowl game since 2018 and it has an improved defense to rely upon as well.

All but two of their defensive starters are upperclassmen and they spent last season with the Bears as well. Not having shown much last season, it should be a stronger side of the ball.

BYU may not have the same explosiveness as it did last season with RB Tyler Allgeier having departed for the NFL. BYU lost at Baylor last season 38-24 as well.

While the Cougars did have some impressive wins, the same Bears defense should see similar success this time around. I’ll take the Bears with the plus-money value to win outright.

Against the spread

BET BAYLOR +2.5 (-112).

For all the reasons listed above, and the fact that Baylor had 2 games last season finishing by a 2-point margin, I’ll take the visitors plus the points here.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 52.5 (-112).

Both teams would’ve crushed this in their season opener, and the offenses have looked impressive.

Shapen looks like a solid commander for the Bears’ offense and should be able to string lengthy possessions together, having an 85% completion percentage in his opener.

With Brooks potentially being one of the better backs in the country, betting on him to be efficient again is smart. The total isn’t set too high here either with the team’s combining for 119 points in their openers.

BYU at South Florida odds, picks, and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s BYU at South Florida odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The BYU Cougars and the South Florida Bulls open their seasons Saturday in Tampa at 4 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the BYU vs. South Florida odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

USF comes into the season after winning only 3 games in the first 2 seasons under coach Jeff Scott. After an offseason in which the Bulls took more than 20 transfers, including new starting QB Gerry Bohanon from Baylor, USF looks to start strong against a BYU team playing in the muggy conditions of Tampa.

BYU comes into this game with returning starting QB Jaren Hall for coach Kalani Sitake. With RB Tyler Allgeier drafted by the Atlanta Falcons, the Cougars will need to find different options on offense if they want to return to double-digit victories and a Top-25 ranking. This game seems like an ease into the season for BYU, but with the weather forecast to be in the mid-90s with humidity at the same level, the Cougars may find it more difficult than anticipated.

It would also not be out of the question to expect a weather delay in this game for lightning. Meaning, any momentum gained early, could be gone by the end of a hard-fought game.

BYU at South Florida picks and predictions

Prediction

BYU 27, South Florida 21

Money line

PASS.

BYU (-420) will win, but staying away from a ML this expensive is a better way to use your money. If you are intent on betting this game, I’d suggest including BYU (-420) in a parlay and not betting it separate.

Against the spread

BACK SOUTH FLORIDA +11.5 (-112).

It is going to be in the mid-90s and the humidity will be something BYU is not used to. The Cougars tried getting ready for these conditions by practicing in a heated indoor area with water drenching the field to approximate the humidity.

It will not be enough to avoid the misery, cramping and exhaustion once the game gets into the late stages. BYU may jump out early with Hall leading the way, but in the end, USF +11.5 (-112) will cover. It’s my FAVORITE PLAY of this game.

Over/Under

UNDER 58.5 (-110) is the way to go.

South Florida has a lot to prove this season under coach Scott. After 3 wins in 2 years, even Bulls fans are restless. With a litany of fresh faces and a better defense than offense coming back for the Bulls, this could turn into an ugly matchup.

Although many early-season games have hit the Over thus far, this one, with heat and humidity abound, will cash Under tickets. Much like the Charlotte at FAU game did a week ago in Boca Raton when the total was 59.5 and the game ended 43-13. Take UNDER 58.5 (-110), but it’s just a lean in this direction.

Independence Bowl: UAB Blazers at BYU Cougars odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UAB Blazers at BYU Cougars odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The UAB Blazers (8-4) will take on the No. 12 BYU Cougars (10-2). Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, and the game will be held at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, LA. Below, we look at the UAB at BYU odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

UAB had a solid season in the Conference USA West division, finishing second behind UTSA. UAB had four losses on the season and really only one they’ll regret, a 30-24 defeat by Rice.

UAB scores almost 30 points per game and gives up around 22 per game. Star RB DeWayne McBride, averaging 6.7 yards per game with over 1,100 yards and 12 touchdowns, has been the backbone of the offense.

As for BYU, they’re also led by a dynamic offense, one averaging over 33 points per game. RB Tyler Allgeier has been their star, totaling 20 touchdowns and over 1,400 rushing yards.

BYU’s only losses have been to Boise State and Baylor.

Prediction

BYU 38, UAB 21

Money line

PASS on the money line. I like BYU here, and the -250 just isn’t worth it when the spread is still under a touchdown difference.

Against the spread

BET on BYU -6.5 (-115) as they’ve had a far more consistent schedule and have drastically better victories. UAB was destroyed by teams like Georgia and Liberty.

As for BYU, they took Utah, a team that beat the once top-five Oregon twice. BYU also has a competent pass game behind Jaren Hall, who has 20 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions.

BYU had two losses in the NCAA’s 60th strength of schedule UAB had the 94th SOS and had four losses. BYU has looked far better and should impose its will on UAB.

Over/Under

BET on the OVER 54.5 (-120) as both teams have far better offenses than they do defenses. BYU is topping 30 points per game.

Similarly, UAB’s offense is nearing 30 per game. UAB’s strength is also BYU’s weakness. BYU’s defense allows more than 150 rushing yards per game, playing to UAB’s strength.

While I still envision a BYU blowout, points should be in abundance.

BYU at USC odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s BYU Cougars at USC Trojans odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 15 BYU Cougars (9-2) will head to L. A. Memorial Coliseum Saturday to take on the USC Trojans (4-6). Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the BYU at USC odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Coming into the game, the Cougars haven’t been great against the spread, sitting at just 5-6. However, it’s not because of lack of offense.

BYU’s offense averages the 19th-most yards per game, topping 450. The defense doesn’t help much though as they rank 74th, almost giving up 380 per game.

This will be a good game for the Cougars to flex their dominance as an independent team. They’ll be faced with the Trojans who have struggled heavily. They’ve been awful ATS with a 3-7 record.

They’re 6-4 on the over/under though, averaging over 306.7 yards through the air per game. This should be a high-paced, pass-heavy battle between a few top West Coast programs.

BYU at USC odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

BYU 38, USC 27

Money line

PASS on the money line here. While I like BYU to win, I would avoid -260, especially in the college road setting. Look to the points for value.

Against the spread

BET on BYU -7.5 (+100) as the far better bet.

USC has lost several big-time games that would’ve shown at least some competence in their program. The Trojans’ defense has been awful, giving up almost 420 yards per game.

BYU is going to abuse USC through the air.

Having scored 34 or more points in four of its last five games, BYU has taken its game to the next level. On top of that, USC is just 2-4 at home, so it hasn’t used that home-field advantage like most.

With that in mind, I’m backing the more talented side here.

Over/Under

“LEAN” on the OVER 64.5 (-117) as neither team has shown they can defend at any level. USC is giving up over 400 yards to their opponents.

It’s hard to even comprehend that USC can consistently give up that type of yardage. BYU should be able to murder them through the air, but it, to an extent, goes both ways.

USC has cashed more Overs as well. The Trojans also put up over 445 yards of total offense per game themselves. With the fact that passing can stop the clock as well, I like many points to be scored in this one.

Given the ways of college football and the sporadic nature, I’d still only lean on a total this high.

Virginia at BYU odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Virginia at BYU odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Virginia Cavaliers (6-2) and No. 25 BYU Cougars (6-2) meet for a Saturday 10:15 p.m. ET game at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. Below, we look at the Virginia vs. BYU odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Virginia takes a top-15 offense  – and a four-game win streak – into Saturday’s tilt at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The Cavaliers are coming off a 48-40 win over Georgia Tech, and have played three one-score games over their last four contests. With junior QB Brennan Armstrong (64.2% completion rate, 23 TD passes) leading the way, the Wahoos rank fourth in the nation in total yards (539.5 per game) and 16th in scoring (37.6 points per game).

The Cougars are back at home after tough back-to-back contests on the road (at Baylor, at Washington State). Brigham Young went 1-1 on the trip, with the win coming at Wazzou last week. BYU has won 12 of its last 13 at home.

Virginia at BYU odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Virginia 34, BYU 28

Money line

PASS, but consider a line watch: grab Virginia if the Cavaliers get to +120.

Against the spread

BYU is 4-10 ATS across its last 14 games vs. winning teams. The Cougars scoring figures are a bit fortunate compared to the quality of BYU’s drives in general. The opposite holds true for the UVA defense. (So, a bit of red-zone/inside-the-40 regression spells some lean toward Virginia.)

Last week’s UVA win over Georgia Tech was more of a rout than what showed in a garbage-score-tainted final score. An earlier close shave at Louisville (34-33) was a clear statistical win for the Wahoos. UL had a couple big plays find pay dirt, and the Cardinals had three scoring drives of less-than-40 yards.

Former BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall now leads Virginia. His Cavaliers head into a bye week after this trip. In time spanning his years in Charlottesville and Provo, Mendenhall’s teams are five for their last six ATS in road efforts before a bye.

UVA will be the best passing game BYU has seen. The Cougars are 1-2 ATS against the three best passing teams it has seen. The one win (Utah State) was influenced by a plus-2 turnover margin and a late BYU score.

TAKE VIRGINIA +2.5 (-110).

Over/Under

The Under is 20-10 over BYU’s last 30 home games. This total is higher than any of those 30.

UVA has a really good offense, but its monster performances have come on its home turf.

TAKE THE UNDER 65.5 (-107).

BYU at Washington State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s BYU Cougars at Washington State Cougars odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The BYU Cougars (5-2, Independent) travel to meet the Washington State Cougars (4-3, 3-2 Pac-12) Saturday at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Washington. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the BYU vs. Washington State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

BYU has tumbled two weeks in a row, falling at home to Boise State Oct. 9, and at Baylor last Saturday by a 38-24 score. The Cougars are allowing 32.0 PPG across the past two, as the defense has struggled a bit.

It’s been a tumultuous week for Washington State, as head coach Nick Rolovich was dismissed for failing to comply with a state COVID-19 vaccination mandate. Four assistant coaches were also dismissed, leaving the team in a bit of disarray.

BYU at Washington State odds, spread and lines

BYU at Washington State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

BYU 31, Washington State 24

Money line

BYU (-200) catches Washington State (+160) in a tough spot. Wazzu had been playing exceptional football, rattling off three straight wins with four covers in a row.

But, with Rolovich and several other coaches gone, and others forced to wear several different hats on the fly, it’s going to be chaos on the Palouse.

Still, risky two times your potential return is a little too much. AVOID, and look to the spread.

Against the spread

BYU -4.5 (-105) is one of my favorite plays on the board. QB Jaren Hall is back for the visitors, and he should excel in this road game. I feel bad for the Washington State +4.5 (-115) players, as they deserve much better.

But, I feel good for myself, and bettors, as you have to take advantage of a favorable situation when it presents itself. This is certainly one of those times.

Over/Under

UNDER 56.5 (-110) is the lean here, but play it lightly. The Under is 4-1 in the past five for Washington State, while going 5-2 in seven games overall for BYU.

This won’t be confused with a defensive slog, but we also won’t see a lot of fireworks, either. And again, Washington State could be a little disjointed with all of the changes this week.

BYU at Baylor odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s BYU Cougars at Baylor Bears odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 20 BYU Cougars (5-1) and Baylor Bears (5-1) battle in a Saturday non-conference game at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the BYU vs. Baylor odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Brigham Young was saddled with its first loss of the season when the Cougars dropped a 26-17 home game against the Boise State Broncos Oct. 9. BYU short circuited its own effort by logging a minus-4 in turnovers. Prior to that setback, the Cougars had allowed just 19.4 points per game (PPG).

The Bears have yielded just 17.8 PPG. They’re coming off a 45-20 win over West Virginia and have already won three more games than they did in nine contests last fall. Led by RB Abram Smith (7.7 yards per carry, 7 TDs), Baylor has cranked out 227.7 rushing yards per game (ranking 16th).

BYU at Baylor odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

BYU 31, Baylor 28

Money line

Peg Baylor as being a tad overrated on both sides of the ball and perhaps looking forward to a bye week and subsequent in-state rivalry game against Texas.

BYU (+190) is a fair price in a game that could well settle into a back-and-forth.

Against the spread

The Cougars are 4-0 ATS in their last four games as underdogs.

The Bears are a plus-6 in turnover margin and have been at the fortunate end of turning red-zone trips into TDs (18-for-23). Figure BU as a legitimate 4.5-to-5-point favorite; the 5.5-point number makes for some lean toward the Cougars.

An edge to the Brigham Young offensive line – especially in avoiding negative plays – goes a long way toward liking the Cougars to stay within a field goal.

BACK BYU +5.5 (-110).

Over/Under

BYU ranks 81st in the nation in points per game and 66th in yards per game both. Advanced stats metrics peg BYU very close to Baylor, which ranks 17th and 24th, respectively.

TAKE THE OVER 51.5 (-110).

Boise State at BYU odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

BYU 31, Boise State 24

Money line

This is the 10th year in a row the two teams have faced one another. Boise State has won five of the last 10 matchups but BYU won each of the last two.

BYU has lost only one of its last 15 games and has wins over two top-25 teams this season.

Boise State is allowing opponents to convert 45% of their third downs this season, which will keep the BYU offense.

Take BYU (-230).

Against the spread

BYU has not won a game by fewer than 8 points this season.

Both teams are 3-2 ATS and Boise State is 2-0 ATS on the road.

Boise State covered the spread in only one of the last six games against BYU.

Take BYU -5.5 (-112).

Over/Under

BYU has not scored more than 35 points this season and only one of its five games this season hit the Over. The Cougars are allowing only 19.4 points per game.

Boise State allows 22.8 points per gameand is 3-2 O/U.

Take UNDER 57.5 (-110).

BYU at Utah State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s BYU at Utah State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 15 BYU Cougars (4-0, Independent) and Utah State Aggies (3-1, 1-1 Mountain West) meet Friday at Maverik Stadium in Logan, Utah. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the BYU vs. Utah State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

It’s four up and four down for the Cougars. It hasn’t been easy, either, as QB Jaren Hall went down with a lower leg injury on the final drive against Arizona State in Week 3. It was next man up, as QB Baylor Romney stepped right in and led a scoring drive, and then took the team to a win last week against USF, connecting on a touchdown with his brother WR Gunner Romney.

After rolling up three wins and three covers, the Aggies had cold water splashed on them at home last week against the Boise State Broncos. Utah State was outscored 27-3, failing as a 9.5-point underdog as the Under connected. The Aggies’ biggest issues are on defense where they rank 121st with 463.3 total yards allowed.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

BYU at Utah State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

BYU 36, Utah State 25

Money line

I like BYU to continue unbeaten, although it’ll certainly get a test from Utah State. The Aggies are a solid team offensively who could catch the Cougars in the right moment. However, there is just something about this BYU team that always seems to find a way to get the win.

The Cougars will pull away for the cover in the fourth quarter.

AVOID, as you can’t risk more than three times your potential return.

Against the spread

BYU -9.5 (-115) is a great play on the road in this rivalry game, although it won’t be an easy cover. It will likely take a late score to grab the backdoor cover after a tough test from Utah State.

The Aggies have won two of the last three in this series, although the Cougars rolled up a 42-14 win in Logan the last time these teams met on Nov. 2, 2019.

Over/Under

UNDER 63.5 (-108) is the lean, but it’s only worth a small-unit play.

The Under has cashed in three of the last four games for the Cougars, with the Over hitting last time out as South Florida’s overachieved Saturday in Provo.

The Under is a risky play though, as Utah State ranks 9th in total yards per game (533.3) and 121st with total yards allowed (463.3).

Holy War: Utah at BYU odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Utah at BYU odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 18 Utah Utes (1-0) travel to LaVell Edwards Stadium to play the BYU Cougars (1-0) Saturday in what’s known as the “Holy War”. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:15 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Utah vs. BYU State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Utah opened its 2021 season by bulldozing Weber State of the Big Sky conference 40-17 but wasn’t able to cover a massive 29.5-point spread at home. The Utes found a lot of offensive success and outgained the Wildcats 450-270 in total yards; however, they turned the ball over twice.

BYU handled business in Week 1 by taking down Arizona 24-16 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas but couldn’t cover as a 13.5-point favorite. The Cougars made Arizona a one-dimensional team by holding the Wildcats to just 81 rushing yards on 35 carries and intercepted 1 pass.

The “Holy War” had a truce last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Utah won the last nine meetings and covered against BYU in six of those games.

Utah at BYU odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Utah 34, BYU 17

Money line

PASS even though Utah (-300) is clearly the right side because risking three times your money when betting team sports has a really bad long-term return on investment. Utah has a nine-game win streak over BYU, but the Utes’ money line value is pretty minimal.

Against the spread

TAKE UTAH -7.5 (+100) for 1 unit because there’s “sharp line movement” heading in that direction, Utah has extra prep time and these squads are on the opposite sides of the returning talent spectrum.

Both the “pros” and “Joes” are backing Utah right now, which is the reason oddsmakers have moved this line up from the Utes laying 6 points to the listed number. Utah also benefits from starting its season Sept. 2, while BYU’s opening game was two days later.

Furthermore, BYU has the worst-ranked return of production out of the 127 charted teams, according to ESPN, while Utah ranks eighth.

Not only did BYU’s 2020 starting quarterback, Zach Wilson, go second in the 2021 NFL Draft but the Cougars were actually hit harder on defense. BYU ranks dead-last in returning defensive production and has just four starters returning this season.

Since both programs reside in the same state, BYU doesn’t have much of a home-field advantage, which is evident in Utah’s five-game road ATS win streak against the in-state rival.

Over/Under

Slight “LEAN” to the OVER 49.5 (-108) for a quarter unit only because we are getting to the party a little late since all the pro-Over money has pushed this total up from the 47-point opener to the listed number. This is despite the Under cashing in three of the last four Utah-BYU meetings.

However, Utah’s offense started to look good at the end of last season, while scoring 30 or more points in the last three contests and dropped a 40-piece in the season opener.

With BYU’s defense being as raw as it is I could see the Utes hammering the Cougars and leaving a lot of garbage time for the OVER 49.5 (-108) to cash.
