Tennessee has practiced 10 times this spring under first-year head coach Josh Heupel.
Following the Vols’ tenth spring practice, special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Mike Ekeler met with media. He discussed JUCO transfer linebacker Byron Young.
Ekeler mentioned Young has made “a ton of improvement” and has “speed off the edge that you’re looking for.”
“With his skill set, he’s got unbelievable speed,” Ekeler said of Young. “The guy is extremely fast and he bends really well, so he can hit that corner and dip, rip, rub and beat them to the edge.
“He’s really doing a good job working on his counter moves, and I’m really excited about him. That guy, he really, truly, every single day, just coming out and competing. I love the guy.”
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound junior transferred to Tennessee from Georgia Military College.
Young totaled 31 tackles and seven sacks in 11 games during the 2019 season at Georgia Military College.
The early signing period has kicked off and goes through Dec. 18.
Tennessee secured another signee during the early signing period on Wednesday.
3-star linebacker Byron Young has signed with the Vols. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker played at Georgia Military College. He is from Carvers Bay High School in Hemingway, South Carolina.
Alabama hasn’t forgotten about what happened last year after facing LSU.

If Alabama came into Saturday night’s matchup against LSU seeking revenge, it most definitely got what it came for, leaving Baton Rouge with a 55-17 win.
It had to have felt good, after Alabama dropped a home game to LSU last year. The Crimson Tide fell, 46-41 in a season where it was LSU who played in the national championship and finished out with a perfect record.
Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron said he hadn’t personally thought about the Tide being out for revenge or that playing a significant factor.
“I don’t know, I can’t say that,” he said after the game. “I think any time a team beats you, the next time your want to beat them. That’s sports. I ain’t heard anything about revenge or nothing like that. I was focused on our team this year. That’s it.”

Regardless of what was said ahead of the game, it’s clear Alabama football players like defensive end Byron Young got a pretty good bit of satisfaction out of topping the Tigers.
Let’s face it, we all knew this one in particular would come up again after the whole “Roll Tide, what? F– you,” incident.
The Tigers will look to get their feet back under them as they take on the Florida Gators up next on the schedule on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
Young is an unheralded product out of Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Georgia. At 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, he does not yet hold any ratings from the 247Sports Composite.
Although no primary recruiter is officially listed, Young tagged Tennessee outside linebackers coach Shelton Felton and tight ends coach Joe Osovet in his Tweet announcing the offer.
Tennessee’s 2021 recruiting class currently ranks No. 10 in the country, and No. 5 in the SEC.
We are only 47 days from Alabama football kicking off its season. With the cancelled USC game, we’re just not sure who the opponent with be.
Alabama’s opening week game against the USC Trojans at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has been cancelled after the Pac-12 announced its teams would play a conference-only schedule in 2020.
Yes, that was unfortunate news, and, yes, that means the Crimson Tide is looking for a new opponent to open its season on Sept. 5, but, as of right now, that is still the target date to open the season. Until that changes, we’ll continue the countdown to kickoff.
With it now being July 20, we are officially 47 days away from the start!
Sophomore defensive lineman Byron Young currently wears the No. 47 for Alabama. After playing in all 13 games and seeing a handful of starts in Year 1, Young will be a key part of the Tide’s rotation along the defensive line in 2020.
Prior to Young, former Alabama outside linebacker Christian Miller wore the number, and other key defensive front players such as Mark Anderson have rocked it in the past as well.

Analysis: Byron Young was one of the many first-year defensive linemen to earn playing time last season. The Mississippi native played in all 13 of Alabama’s games while notching five starts.
On the season, he accumulated 23 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and one pass deflection.
Yes, there is still room for Young to grow, but for a true freshman, he showed enough potential to be considered an important piece along the Crimson Tide’s defensive front for the foreseeable future after being a top 100 prospect coming out of West Jones High School.
With LaBryan Ray, Christian Barmore and DJ Dale expected to be the starting three, don’t expect Young to see as many starts this season — unless the injury bug hits again. But still expect him to be an important contributor.
