Insider names three more WR targets Steelers show interest in

Insider Tony Pauline has reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers have three WR targets in mind as the trade deadline draws near.

Much to the chagrin of some Steelers fans, the trade rumors keep on coming. Insider Tony Pauline originally reported that the Denver Broncos had a ’50-50’ chance of trading Russell Wilson’s former WR1, Courtland Sutton. However, according to his sources, there appear to be not one but two more wide receivers linked to the team’s trade plans, bringing their total number of WR trade targets up to three.

Pauline states that these receivers are the New York Jets’ Mike Williams, the New York Giants’ Darius Slayton, and the recently reported Broncos’ Courtland Sutton.

The draft capital Pittsburgh would be willing to part with in any of these potential trades remains to be seen. The November 5th trade deadline is less than one week away, and Steelers fans, while polarized by the recent bombardment of trade rumors and speculation, could finally see their team pull off a blockbuster trade to land a WR2 for the team.

Saints schedule: Is New Orleans playing today?

Are the New Orleans Saints playing today? Here’s a look at the 2024 schedule, their bye week, and the next games to come:

Will the New Orleans Saints be on the field today in Week 8 of the NFL schedule?

Following a rough loss in prime  time  to their old head coach Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos, the Saints are returning to the field today on Sunday, Oct. 27, and looking to end their five-game losing streak.

The Saints are getting healthier, with offensive playmakers like wide receiver Chris Olave, tight end/fullback Taysom Hill, and right guard Cesar Ruiz all returning to the lineup. Defensively, linebacker Pete Werner is back, too, meaning the front seven will be at full strength for the firs time this year.

They’ll need all the help they can get to slow down a talented Los Angeles Chargers team. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh has put young quarterback Justin Herbert in position to make some plays, and he’s exactly the kind of mobile quarterback the Saints have struggled to defend. If New Orleans is going to get out of this slump, it must start today.

What is the Rams’ record after a bye under Sean McVay?

The Rams are above .500 in games immediately after a bye since 2017, but not by much

The Los Angeles Rams will have the added benefit of coming off a bye in Week 7 when they host the Las Vegas Raiders at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, giving them an extra week to recover from injuries and prepare for Antonio Pierce’s squad. It’s a crucial game for the Rams to win and given the opponent, it’s one they’re fully expected to win, too.

During the course of his career, Sean McVay has had success in games immediately following a bye. According to Stathead, the Rams are 4-3 after their bye since 2017, though their record is just 1-2 in the last three years.

  • 2023 vs. Seahawks: W, 17-16
  • 2022 vs. 49ers: L, 31-14
  • 2021 at Packers: L, 36-28
  • 2020 vs. Seahawks: W, 23-16
  • 2019 at Steelers: L, 17-12
  • 2018 at Lions: W, 30-16
  • 2017 at Giants: W, 51-17

In three games after a bye with Matthew Stafford at quarterback, the Rams are just 1-2 and have been outscored by 24 points. Stafford has five touchdowns and two interceptions in those games, throwing for fewer than 200 yards twice.

Only three of the Rams’ post-bye games under McVay have come at home and they’ve won two of those contests. They’ll be at home against the Raiders on Sunday so hopefully that’ll help their chances of winning, too.

This is the earliest the Rams have had a bye week since 2017. Previously, their earliest bye was 2022 in Week 8 and 2017 in Week 9. As evidenced by the final scores above, the defense has typically played well after a bye. The Rams have had more games (two) allowing fewer than 300 yards than they have allowing more than 400 yards (zero) since 2017. Offensively, the Rams have averaged 336.5 yards per game after a bye under McVay.

The Raiders are a team in flux after benching QB Gardner Minshew and trading away Davante Adams, so this is a golden opportunity for the Rams to turn their season around and get a much-needed win.

Chiefs TE Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift attend ALCS Game 1

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are set to see the New York #Yankees take on the Cleveland #Guardians in Game 1 of the ALCS tonight.

As the Kansas City Chiefs begin preparing to get back to playing football after their bye week, star tight end Travis Kelce is set to join Taylor Swift for one last hurrah before the team makes its final push for a Super Bowl three-peat.

According to MLB reporter Bryan Hoch, Kelce and Swift are set to attend Game 1 of the ALCS, which is set to feature the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians in the Big Apple tonight.

Kelce has made the most of his time off with Swift in New York and went on a double date with actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively last week.

Kelce, a Cleveland native, is sure to be rooting for the Guardians in the highly-anticipated playoff matchup.

It is unclear which team, if any, Swift is supporting in the ALCS.

Stay tuned to see if Kelce and Swift are featured in the game’s broadcast.

Chiefs scouting report: Washington State Cougars DE Syrus Webster

Washington State Cougars DE Syrus Webster could be a great late-round option for the Kansas City #Chiefs in the 2025 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs have the league’s best interior pass rusher on their roster, but there’s room to improve the depth in their edge room. Washington State Cougars defensive end Syrus Webster is a great locker-room presence and leader who provides a late-round option for Kansas City.

He transferred to Washington State in 2024 after earning All-Conference honors in consecutive seasons at Utah Tech. His frame is undersized, and his arm length is not ideal, which contributes to his late-round profile.

Webster’s active hands compensate for his lack of length and help him violently attack the offensive tackle’s hands. His pass rush plan consists of speed rushes, two-handed swipes, swims, club-swims and push-pulls. Webster’s polished spin move is the best weapon in his arsenal.

As a pass-rusher, Webster makes use of exceptional counter moves when his initial plan stalls, and he counters into the B-gap when he feels a path to the quarterback open. Unfortunately, he lacks the explosiveness and bend to provide a consistent threat around the outside.

Webster’s excellent motor shows up in run defense. He resets his hands frequently while stacking and peaking around blockers. Webster keeps offensive linemen out of his pads on most plays, but he struggles to hold the point of attack when blockers get into his frame.

Washington State’s next game is against Fresno State on October 12 at 6:00 p.m CST.

Dan Campbell: ‘We have to improve’ coming out of the bye week

Lions head coach Dan Campbell: ‘We have to improve’ coming out of the bye week

The Detroit Lions come out of the Week 5 bye with a nice 3-1 record and a lofty status in every NFL power poll. It’s been a good start for the Lions, but head coach Dan Campbell knows it can be better.

In fact, Campbell is emphasizing how what they’ve accomplished thus far isn’t good enough. The Lions have to get better in some areas, and Campbell knows it.

“The emphasis really is still on improving. We have to improve. And it’s really about, ‘Alright, we’ve got to,’ – we did some things on Monday night that were – that’s more what we’re looking for, and so now that’s the floor,” Campbell stated on Monday. “How do we continue to play even better than that, how do we clean up some of the things that got us in trouble in that game? It wasn’t all perfect, and so I think you just continue to strive that way and try to be – you’re trying to play a perfect game.”

The Lions head to Dallas in Week 6 to play the 3-2 Cowboys, who are coming off a win over Pittsburgh on Sunday night. It’s a game Campbell knows his team must play better to beat.

“So, we’ve got things to clean up, and so it really is, it’s about improving,” Campbell continued. “That’s what you’ve got to do during the week.”

One example of an area where Campbell cited that the team could improve is in communication. And the head coach pointed the finger in the mirror on this one,

“We went through all of it with the coaches. I would tell you one, communication on my part. Overall communication, particularly with the staff, is where I can be much better,” Campbell said introspectively.

NFC North watch: All 3 Lions divisional foes win in Week 5

NFC North watch: All 3 Lions divisional foes win in Week 5 while Detroit was on the bye week

Week 5 saw the Detroit Lions catch their bye week, a welcome break for the 3-1 team. Unfortunately for the Lions, their NFC North divisional foes all had positive outcomes for the weekend.

Minnesota kicked off the football Sunday in London by beating the New York Jets, 23-17. The Vikings offense struggled in this one, but Jets QB Aaron Rodgers threw three INTs, including one in the final minute to save the Vikings victory. Minnesota improves to 5-0, the NFC’s only unbeaten team after Week 5.

The Chicago Bears had a cakewalk game against the Carolina Panthers. The 36-10 final score makes the game appear closer than it was in reality; after an early Panthers touchdown run, Chicago absolutely dominated all phases of the game. The Bears improve to 3-2 with the win.

Green Bay also improved to 3-2 with a hard-fought win over the upstart Rams in Los Angeles. The Packers held on, surviving a Matthew Stafford comeback effort and winning despite converting just one third down attempt all afternoon.

Up next

In Week 6, the Vikings are on a bye week. Chicago plays Jacksonville in England, while Green Bay hosts the Arizona Cardinals. Detroit plays in Dallas in the late-afternoon window next Sunday.

Bye week Sunday watch guide for Lions fans

Bye week Sunday watch guide for Lions fans, with four straight games on Sunday to fill the void of Detroit being idle

No Detroit Lions football this Sunday? No problem. The Week 5 NFL schedule has plenty of other games for Lions fans to check out, with four straight games of interest.

Sunday’s slate features all three of Detroit’s divisional foes in action, with none playing at the same time. It starts at 9 a.m. with the Minnesota Vikings playing the New York Jets in London.

At 1 p.m., the Chicago Bears host the Carolina Panthers. After that game, the coverage switches to Los Angeles, where the Rams are hosting the Green Bay Packers.

Then on Sunday night, the Dallas Cowboys visit the Pittsburgh Steelers. Detroit plays Dallas when the Lions return from the bye in Week 6.

Lions bye week medical status report and outlook for return

Lions bye week medical status report and outlook for return for players like Frank Ragnow, Derrick Barnes, Ifeatu Melifonwu and more

With four games in the books and entering the bye week, it’s a good time to recap where the Lions are at from a medical standpoint. Overall, despite some injuries, the Lions are in good shape coming out of the bye.

Not listed here are a couple pending concerns from the Seahawks game in Kerby Joseph and Carlton Davis (see my postgame article for details).

MAJOR LOSSES

Marcus Davenport, DE

Davenport missed game two due to a groin injury and game four due to a left elbow injury. The elbow is expected to be a season-ender.

Signed to a 1-year contract as a free agent, the Lions were hoping that Davenport would solidify the edge position opposite Aidan Hutchinson.

With Davenport out, Levi Onwuzurike, Josh Paschal, and James Houston will have increased opportunities.

Derrick Barnes, LB

This versatile LB took a direct impact on his right knee in game three, which may have caused a hyperextension, MCL sprain, and possibly more. He was placed on IR after the game.

The earliest he could return is Week 9 vs the Packers, but he’s expected to be out longer than that with the possibility it’s even a season-ender.

With Barnes out, Malcolm Rodriguez and Ben Niemann saw a big increase in snaps at the LB position against the Seahawks.

MINOR LOSSES

Frank Ragnow, C

This 2nd-team All-Pro is a major player, but he’s in the minor category because his left pec injury is not expected to be a long-term issue. He hurt the pec early in game three and missed game four.

The diagnosis is a partially-torn pec which translates to a grade 1 or 2 strain. If the strain is mild and does not involve the tendon, Ragnow could be back after the bye vs the Cowboys. Even if a longer recovery is needed, I would not expect him to be out much longer than that. He was not placed on IR which suggests an injury of less than four weeks.

To fill Ragnow’s void, Graham Glasgow moved from LG to C, and Kayode Awosika inserted at LG. Both played well against the Seahawks.

Ifeatu Melifonwu, S

A persistent ankle issue landed Melifonwu on IR before game four. The injury suffered likely in the second preseason game on August 17 was not initially expected to be a long-term issue, otherwise the Lions would have put him on IR much sooner. Melifonwu’s earliest possible return is in week nine vs the Packers.

If starters Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph stay healthy, Melifonwu’s absence is not a major problem. But if either go down, it would be valuable to have Melifonwu who made numerous splash plays in the second half of last season.

REINFORCEMENTS COMING SOON

Brodric Martin, DT

This 2023 3rd-round pick hyperextended his right knee on August 24 and was placed on IR at the 53-man cutdown. This means he could return to the team at any time now although Dan Campbell’s comments suggest he is not quite ready yet. I would expect him to start practicing sometime in the next three weeks.

With the loss of Davenport for the year, having Martin available on the defensive line will give the Lions more flexibility if they choose to play Levi Onwuzurike at the DE position.

Christian Mahogany, OG

The Lions 6th-round pick missed all of camp due to mononucleosis and started the season on NFI (non-football-injury). He is now eligible to return anytime and Dan Campbell says he is close.

His mono was likely diagnosed around July 20 and is typically a 3-4 week recovery unless there are complications like persistent splenomegaly. He was able to resume training before the start of the regular season which was a good sign.

Mahogany’s return is dependent on his strength, conditioning, and mental readiness. For a rookie who missed all of camp, the mental game might be the limiting factor.

I’m not expecting Mahogany to play much of a role this season, but any injuries to the guys ahead of him could change things in a hurry.

LONG RANGE HOPEFULS

Emmanuel Moseley, CB

After two straight ACL tears, Moseley tore his pec around August 5 this year. Assuming this was a complete rupture, expect a return around Thanksgiving if he follows the same 16-week timeline as CJ Gardner-Johnson of last year.

John Cominsky, DT/DE

An MCL tear on July 30 was complicated enough to require surgery. The initial estimated recovery was 5-6 months which would mean a return in January-February. Optimistically, the fact that Cominsky made the initial 53-man roster before being placed on IR means the Lions think there is a chance of a return this year.

Dan Campbell lays out self-scouting plan for Lions coaches over the bye week

Dan Campbell lays out self-scouting plan for Lions coaches over the bye week

The Detroit Lions are now off for a few days. Well, they’re out of the building for the bye week.

That doesn’t mean the Lions are done working, of course. That’s especially true for the coaching staff. Head coach Dan Campbell gave his assistants a self-scouting mission for the time off from practices.

“I told the coaches, I really want us to look at ourselves more than the players if that sounds – because of it’s so early in the season,” Campbell said on Monday. “I think it’s more about, let’s look at ourselves here individually as position coaches, coordinators and myself, head coach, and let’s say, ‘Where are we at? What are we doing well? What are we not doing well? How do we help these guys?’ And I think that’s really got to be the emphasis right now.”

The Lions are 3-1 and rank well in most categories, but there is definitely work to be done. As Campbell also noted,

“We can be much better. We need to be much better.”
