PODCAST: Which Bills’ offensive position groups need to be improved?

Kyle Silagyi is joined by Justin Diloro and McKenna Middlebrook to talk about the offensive position groups the Buffalo Bills must improve.

Though the 2019 NFL season was a successful one for the Buffalo Bills, the team’s offense left a bit to be desired.

The team finished with the league’s 24th ranked offense, averaging a total of just 330.2 yards per game. Though quarterback Josh Allen improved in his second professional season, he sometimes showed lapses in judgment, resulting in turnovers and frequent errant throws. The receiving corps showed glaring holes throughout the entire season and the backfield, while talented, struggled to consistently produce.

On this episode of The Kyle Silagyi Variety Hour, host Kyle Silagyi is joined by BillsWire staff writers Justin DiLoro and McKenna Middlebrook to explore the offensive position groups that Buffalo needs to improve in the offseason. They also rant about the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres and briefly talk about the world of English football.

Montreal Canadiens at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Montreal Canadiens at Buffalo Sabres sports betting odds, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (22-21-7) are trying to bounce back from back-to-back losses as they host the Montreal Canadiens (22-22-7) at KeyBank Center for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Canadiens-Sabres odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Canadiens at Sabres: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price vs. Carter Hutton

Price lost his last start against the Washington Capitals, 4-2, after winning his previous four games. The loss sent Price to 20-17-4 on the season with a .909 save percentage and a 2.85 goals against average.

Hutton draws Thursday’s start with Linus Ullmark out with injury. He has lost his past 11 starts, allowing an average of 4.27 goals per game in those appearances. Hutton is 6-7-4 with a .892 SV% and 3.31 GAA.

Canadiens at Sabres: Odds, picks and betting tips

Prediction

Canadiens 4, Sabres 3

Moneyline (ML)

Despite the Canadiens and Sabres nearly identical records—they are tied at 51 points and both 10 points behind the second wild-card seed—Montreal (-121) is rightfully a slight favorite and the Canadiens are the right side here. The biggest discrepancy between the two clubs is in the Corsi (percentage of total shot attempts) rankings: Montreal ranks third in Corsi for percentage and Buffalo is 21st.

The Habs are a much better road team compared to home. They are 12-9-3, while scoring 3.38 goals and allowing 3.04 goals per game on the road. The favorite has fared better in recent Canadiens-Sabres games; the team favored is 7-1 in the last eight meetings. Plus, the Canadiens are facing the much weaker Sabres goalie in this matchup. Hutton ranks 64th in GAA, 65th in save % and 58th in quality start percentage.

BET CANADIENS (-121) on the moneyline. New to sports betting? Bet $121 on the Canadiens to earn $100 if they win outright.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Let’s PASS on the puck line in Canadiens-Sabres because of how even these two teams are. We already mentioned their records but another interesting tidbit is eight of their last 10 meetings have been decided by a single goal, including five games going to overtime or a shootout.

Over/Under (O/U)

Since both goalies are having seasons to forget and the Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings, I’d TAKE OVER 5.5 (-125). We already discussed Hutton’s issues but Price has been one of the worst regular starters in the NHL. Price ranks 31st in goals against average, 37th in SV%, and has allowed more goals than any other goalie in the NHL.

Ottawa Senators at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Ottawa Senators at Buffalo Sabres sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Ottawa Senators (17-23-9) visit the Atlantic Division-rival Buffalo Sabres (22-20-7) Tuesday at KeyBank Center. Puck drop is set for shortly after 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Senators-Sabres sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Senators at Sabres: Projected starting goalies

Craig Anderson vs. Carter Hutton

Anderson gave way to Marcus Hogberg against the New Jersey Devils Monday in the first game out of the all-star break. The veteran netminder is 0-4-1 over his last five starts with at least four goals allowed in each game. He has a .897 save percentage and 3.32 goals against average through 22 games.

Hutton has been equally bad for the Sabres this season. He is 6-7-4 through 17 starts with a .892 SV% and 3.34 GAA. He hasn’t been credited with a win since Oct. 22.

Senators at Sabres: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9:10 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Sabres 6, Senators 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Senators (+170) lost 4-3 in a shootout to the New Jersey Devils Monday, while the SABRES (-208) will play their first game since Saturday, Jan. 18. The head-to-head series is split 1-1. The Sabres won 4-2 at home Nov. 16, while the Sens responded with a 3-1 home win Dec. 23.

Buffalo is 14-6-3 at home for the season and Ottawa is just 5-15-4 on the road. Side with the Sabres and their home and rest advantages.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Sabres to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $4.81.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The projected goaltending matchup makes this selection a little dicey with plenty of goals expected for both sides, but I’m rolling with the SABRES (-1.5, +125) to win by at least 2 goals at plus-money. Buffalo is 29-20 against the spread overall and 13-10 on home ice. Ottawa is 26-23 ATS overall but just 11-13 on the road.

Both games between the two rivals this season were decided by multi-goal margins.

Over/Under (O/U)

The easiest choice Tuesday is the OVER 6.5 (+135) on the alternate Over/Under. The base line is set at 5.5 at a costly -154 price point. Neither starting goaltender inspires any confidence, and the Sabres will have star LW Jeff Skinner back in the lineup Tuesday to boost their scoring potential.  The two teams will be combining for at least 7 goals Tuesday.

Buffalo Sabres at Nashville Predators odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Buffalo Sabres at Nashville Predators sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Nashville Predators (21-18-7) host the Buffalo Sabres (22-19-7) Saturday in Music City. Puck drop at Bridgestone Arena is scheduled for shortly after 8 p.m. ET. We analyze the Sabres-Predators sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Sabres at Predators: Projected starting goalies

Carter Hutton vs. Pekka Rinne

Hutton is without a win in his last 11 outings dating back to Oct. 22. He is 6-7-4 on the season with a .892 save percentage and 3.34 goals against average. He has allowed 17 goals over his last three outings.

Rinne gave up three goals on 31 shots in a loss to the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday. The veteran is 15-10-3 on the season with a .896 SV% and 3.02 GAA.

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Sabres 4, Predators 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Predators (-200) are laying too much chalk to be worth a play on the moneyline. They’ve lost two straight games to the Oilers and Anaheim Ducks, both by 4-2 counts, and are just 3-6-1 across their last 10 games. The SABRES (+165) enter on a three-game win streak, but they’re just 8-13-4 on the road for the season. Their last two wins came against stiff competition in the Vegas Golden Knights (4-2) and Dallas Stars (4-1).

With a $10 bet on the Sabres to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returning a profit of $16.50, the visitors are well worth backing on a smaller-unit play against the struggling Preds.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The play I prefer Saturday is the safer one. Back the SABRES (+1.5, -167) to either lose by 1 goal or win outright. The Sabres are 28-20 against the spread overall and 15-10 on the road, while the Preds are 18-28 ATS overall and 8-15 on home ice.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 5.5 (-139) with the Sabres rolling offensively of late and the shaky Buffalo goaltending opening the doors for the stagnant Nashville offense. The Sabres have scored at least 3 goals in each of their last four games. The Predators have totaled just 5 goals across their last three games.

Esten’s NHL betting record: 172-157

Buffalo Sabres at Dallas Stars odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Buffalo Sabres at Dallas Stars sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (21-19-7) and Dallas Stars (27-15-4) will lock horns at American Airlines Center in Dallas at 8:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Sabres-Stars sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Sabres at Stars: Projected starting goalies

Linus Ullmark vs. Ben Bishop

The Sabres have leaned upon Ullmark heavily, as Carter Hutton has been horrific. Ullmark is 15-12-3 with a 2.78 goals against average and .911 save percentage with a shutout. Ullmark hasn’t faced the Stars this season, but he was amazing against them in two outings last year. He allowed three goals on a total of 54 shots, but took the loss in both games.

Bishop posted an impressive 3-2 win in overtime Tuesday night in Colorado, as the Stars came back from a 2-0 deficit. Bishop is 16-9-3 with a 2.23 GAA and .930 save percentage this season. He fell 4-0 in Buffalo Oct. 14 in the first head-to-head meeting when he made just 18 saves.

Sabres at Stars: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:55 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Stars 3, Sabres 1

Moneyline (ML)

The Stars (-223) are favored heavily over the Sabres (+180) despite the fact Buffalo won the first meeting 4-0 Oct. 14. These teams are totally different since then, and Dallas even has a new coach, as Rick Bowness has replaced Jim Montgomery behind the bench. Buffalo is struggling, and Dallas is rolling. Still, you can’t risk twice as much as your return on investment. AVOID.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The STARS (-1.5, +135) are the play on the puck line, albeit rather lightly. The Sabres have won just 11 of their past 41 on the road, and they’re 17-41 in the previous 58 as an underdog away from home. The Stars have rocketed up the Central Division standings, winning seven of the past eight overall, and 13 of the past 17 at home.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-129) is the way to go. While the Over is 3-0-1 in the past four for Buffalo overall, the Under is 5-2-1 in the past eight when working on just one day of rest. The Under is also 6-2-1 in the past nine meetings in this series, including each of the past three.

Vegas Golden Knights at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Vegas Golden Knights at Buffalo Sabres sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

The Vegas Golden Knights (24-18-6) and Buffalo Sabres (20-19-7) lock horns at KeyBank Center at 7 p.m. ET. We analyze the Golden Knights-Sabres sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Golden Knights at Sabres: Projected starting goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury vs. Linus Ullmark

Fleury heads into action with an 18-10-3 record, 2.84 goals against average and .907 save percentage with a pair of shutouts. He has actually been much better on the road than at home. He is 13-8-2 with a 3.05 GAA and .898 save percentage at T-Mobile Arena in 23 starts, while going 5-2-1 with a 2.30 GAA and .927 SV% in eight starts and nine appearances away from home.

Ullmark is coming off a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on the road Sunday, and he has started nine of the past 10. That’s because Carter Hutton, who started out 6-0-0, hasn’t won since the end of October, going 0-7-2 since. Ullmark is a respectable 14-12-3 with a 2.81 GAA and .911 SV% overall.

Golden Knights at Sabres: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 10:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Golden Knights 4, Sabres 3

Moneyline (ML)

The GOLDEN KNIGHTS (-167) have actually cashed in just one of their past five tries against the Eastern Conference. However, the Sabres (+140) are just 4-9 in their past 13 games overall. Don’t go crazy, but a small-unit bet on VGK is certainly warranted.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered on the Golden Knights ML will profit $5.99 if they win.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

I never like betting favorites on the road on the puck line, although the Golden Knights (-1.5, +165) are tempting. Still, I expect this game to be a close one, and if anything, the Sabres (+1.5, -200) are the way to go. However, they’re too expensive. AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-143) is the best play on the board. The Over is 5-1 in the past six games overall for the Golden Knights, and 5-1 in their past six as a favorite. The Over has also hit in four of the past five for the Sabres when their playing the fourth game in a 4-in-6 (four games in six games) situation.

Buffalo Sabres at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Buffalo Sabres at Detroit Red Wings sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (19-19-7) take on the Detroit Red Wings (12-30-3) in an Atlantic Division contest at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. We analyze the Sabres-Red Wings odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Sabres at Red Wings: Projected starting goalies

Linus Ullmark vs. Jonathan Bernier

Ullmark has logged a 2.87 goals against average and .910 save percentage this season. He recorded a 41-save shutout at Detroit Oct. 25, and last season registered a .927 SV% in four games against the Red Wings. Ullmark has a history of performing well on the road.

Bernier (2.99 GAA, .904 SV%) has fared well of late (.937 SV% over his last six games) and is the lean to start Sunday’s home game against Buffalo. He’s backing a defense that has yielded fewer shots of late.

Sabres at Red Wings: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Buffalo 5, Detroit 3

Moneyline (ML)

AVOID. The Sabres (-139) are 3-13 over their last 16 games as road favorites and 3-13 in their last 16 contests after losing a game by three goals. The Red Wings (+115) are 4-9 over their last 13 home games.

The lean is the more talented Buffalo club, but there are all kinds of cross signals in this one. Both teams show some upside on offense and defense, but the Sabres have struggled mightily on the road of late. Buffalo played at home Saturday and coughed up six goals (after yielding five Thursday).

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Wings (+1.5, -238) are 9-14 against the puck line when playing at home. Again, the Sabres (-1.5, +195) are a lean, but no-go on a play.

Over/Under (O/U)

The strongest play on the board is this one. The Sabres have created more scoring chances over recent games. That hasn’t added up to the goals we’d expect (especially on the road), but Buffalo’s penalty killing of late has been suspect. The OVER 5.5 (-129) has some value.

Buffalo Sabres at St. Louis Blues odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Buffalo Sabres at St. Louis Blues sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (19-17-7) and St. Louis Blues (27-10-7) tangle at Enterprise Center in St. Louis at 8 p.m. ET Thursday. We analyze the Sabres-Blues sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Sabres at Blues: Projected starting goalies

Linus Ullmark vs. Jordan Binnington

Ullmark enters Thursday off of back-to-back wins and has improved to 13-11-3 for the season. He has a .911 save percentage and 2.83 goals against average.

The Stanley Cup-winning tendy has posted a 20-7-4 record, 2.53 goals against average and .917 save percentage with one shutout so far this season. Justin Bieber has a bet with Binnington that he can beat him at least once on 10 shots, and the money will go to charity. It seems unlikely, as lately, men who are paid to play hockey have struggled to sneak it by Binny. He has won seven of his past eight outings, allowing three or fewer goals in six of the contests.

Sabres at Blues: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 11 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Blues 5, Sabres 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Blues (-209) will cost you more than double your investment, and my rule is always to go only as low as -160 or -170, or AVOID. The Sabres (+170) also can’t be counted upon to pull the upset, as they’re just 3-6-1 in the past 10 overall.

New to sports betting? Every $10 wagered on the Blues ML will profit $4.80 if they win.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The BLUES (-1.5, +135) are worth a roll of the dice. Ullmark gives the Sabres a better chance than Carter Hutton would  but back the home side to win by at least 2 goals.

The Blues are 6-0 in their past six at home, 9-1 in the past 10 as a favorite and 26-9 in the past 35 against losing sides.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-125) is a bargain. While there is some concern if the Sabres can solve the red-hot Binnington, the Blues should be able to handle the bulk of the scoring Thursday.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Lightning at Buffalo Sabres sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning (20-13-4) and Buffalo Sabres (17-16-7) battle at KeyBank Center at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday. We analyze the Lightning-Sabres sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Lightning at Sabres: Projected starting goalies

Andrei Vasilevskiy vs. Linus Ullmark

Vasilevskiy, the defending Vezina Trophy winner, puts his 16-9-2 record, 2.85 goals against average and .908 save percentage on the line against the Sabres. He won his first meeting with Buffalo in Stockholm Nov. 8, stopping 20 of 22 shots in a win. Vasilevskiy also topped the Sabres at home Nov. 25, making 28 saves on 30 shots.

Ullmark is on a personal three-game losing streak which has dropped his season record to 11-10-3. He has a 2.80 GAA and .913 SV%.

Prediction

Lightning 5, Sabres 2

Moneyline (ML)

The LIGHTNING (-176) are heavy favorites to finish the four-game season sweep against the Sabres (+145). This is almost about as sure of a thing as it gets, yet the price isn’t terrible.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

LIGHTNING (-1.5, +155) are a tremendous value, as four of the Sabres’ (+1.5, -189) last five losses were decided by at least 2 goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+125) is a nice value here, and the Lightning have the potential to take care of the Over almost all by themselves.

Previewing Sunday’s Buffalo Sabres at Boston Bruins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Buffalo Sabres (17-15-7) and Boston Bruins (23-7-9) tangle at TD Garden at 7 p.m. ET Sunday. We analyze the Sabres-Bruins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and tips.

Sabres at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Linus Ullmark vs. Tuukka Rask

Ullmark is 11-9-3 on the year with a .914 save percentage and 2.79 goals against average.

Jaroslav Halak blanked the Sabres in the front end of the home-and-home, now it’s Rask’s turn to try and get back into the win column. He snapped a personal five-game winless drought last time out, but it is still the only win in six appearances since Dec. 1. The last time he faced the Sabres he allowed just two goals on 38 shots Nov. 21 at TD Garden.

Prediction

Bruins 5, Sabres 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Bruins (-238) are heavy favorites, and they are just too expensive at a risk of more than two times the return. AVOID.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

BRUINS (-1.5, +120) are a much better play on the puck line. Their past two games have not only resulted in a straight-up win but a puck-line cover, too. In fact, that has been the case in each of their past five victories, so if you bet the B’s, you might as well play the puck line, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 5.5 (-121) is worth a small-unit bet. The Bruins offense is more than capable of hitting the number all by themselves.
