Bills hide OL answers in first unofficial depth chart

Buffalo Bills release first depth chart ahead of 2020 regular season.

The Bills released their first unofficial depth chart on Wednesday ahead of their season opener. Despite that, Buffalo still managed to find a way to not give the Jets a single inch ahead of this AFC East clash.

The biggest question mark on the Bills depth chart sits along the offensive line. Who’s starting on the right side? We still don’t have a definitive answer on that.

The highlighted portion of Buffalo’s depth chart comes in that area, where there’s no first, second or third stringer named. Instead we see right tackle with a listing of “Cody Ford/ Ty Nsekhe/ Daryl Williams” while right guard has “Cody Ford/ Daryl Williams/ Brian Winters.”

For reference on the difference in that area, here’s the official depth chart the Bills drew up:

Clearly there’s something funny going on there. The Jets, who released their depth chart two days before the Bills did, had “little surprise” found in it via our friends at Jets Wire.

To each their own…?

Aside from the offensive line intrigue, here’s a quick rundown of other interesting nuggets in Buffalo’s first depth chart of the season:

  • No fullback listed post-Patrick DiMarco cut. Bills are still insisting that Reggie Gilliam, listed at the fourth slot on the depth chart, is a tight end.
  • Expected, but it’s a quarterback note so worth mentioning: Matt Barkley is ahead of rookie Jake Fromm.
  • Ryan Bates is the backup center. With Jon Feliciano out, that duty was up for grabs between him and Ike Boettger. Bates also lists as a third-string left tackle.
  • Defensively, Trent Murphy is listed as a starting defensive end while Mario Addison as Jerry Hughes’ backup. Likely gamesmanship by the Bills.
  • Second-round pick AJ Epensa is a third-string defensive end. There’s a rotation along the D-line for the Bills so we’ll see how much Epenesa plays. Darryl Johnson is ahead of Epenesa, last year’s seventh-round pick.
  • Again, rotation, but Vernon Butler starts in Star Lotulelei’s vacant spot ahead of Harrison Phillips.
  • Former UDFA Tyrel Dodson lists as the No. 2 middle linebacker behind Tremaine Edmunds, edging out Tyler Matakevich, who’s known as an ace special teamer but below average defender.
  • Matt Milano doesn’t have a backup listed. That could be a variety of players such as Dodson or AJ Klein, who’s listed as the starting strong-side linebacker. Buffalo’s defense under Sean McDermott runs mostly two-linebacker sets (Edmunds/ Milano).
  • Josh Norman is CB2 ahead of Levi Wallace.

Bills roster comparison: 2017 vs. 2020 defense, special teams

Buffalo Bills roster comparisons from 2017 training camp to 2020 training camp.

After a couple of seasons, a lot can change in the NFL.

But in the case of the Buffalo Bills, maybe “a lot” just doesn’t cover it.

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane both joined the team’s front office prior to the 2017 season. That year the Bills cracked the postseason in very unlikely fashion with a much-inherited team.

The duo did make big roster moves before that season, like moving Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby. But now entering the fourth training camp under this regime, the names and down-right talent on their roster is a night and day comparison, so let’s do just that.

Here’s a full comparison of the Buffalo Bills’ 2017 defense and special teams roster compared to their current one:

Advantage: 2020
The Bills are hoping to finally have a finished product at this position in 2020. It’s taken a few seasons for Buffalo to get their pass rush in a place that McDermott likes it, but at minimal, the current group is certainly the deepest. If the club decides to keep Trent Murphy heading into the season instead of cutting him, this group will be amongst the deepest edge rushing groups in the entire NFL, along with Mario Addison, AJ Epenesa, and the consistent in Jerry Hughes.

Denver’s record may be a disappointing 3-7, but the team saw glimpses of promise in last weekend’s 27-23 loss to Minnesota on the road. Brandon Allen, making his second career start due to an injury to Joe Flacco, threw for 240 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Running back Phillip Lindsay carried the ball for 67 yards and wide receiver Courtland Sutton hauled in five passes for 113 yards. It was the second time this season Sutton eclipsed the 100-yard mark. The Broncos had a 20 point lead before the Vikings came storming back. Denver took three shots at the end zone with the game nearing the end after converting three fourth downs on the drive, but couldn’t get the job done.

The Broncos defense was lights out in the first half but surrendered touchdowns on the Vikings four possessions following the half. The unit had five sacks and held Dalvin Cook to just 26 yards and one touchdown. Kirk Cousins was the difference maker though. He completed 29 of 35 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns. The pass defense for the Broncos has been one of their stronger suits, as they were holding teams to an average of 210.3 YPG. Shelby Harris racked up three sacks in addition to five tackles in the game.

While the Broncos look to bounce back from a tough loss, the Bills are coming off an easy victory over the Miami Dolphins. Buffalo beat Miami, 37-20, in South Florida behind a four touchdown performance from quarterback Josh Allen. Allen totaled 256 yards in the air and three touchdowns. As a team, the Bills tallied 168 yards rushing and John Brown had nine receptions for a season-high 137 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bills defense is ranked third in points allowed, yards allowed and passing yards allowed. Against Miami, they sacked quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick seven times and held the Dolphins running game to 23 yards. Tremaine Edwards led the team with 12 tackles and half of a sack, while Matt Milano chipped in seven tackles and half of a sack.
