Michigan State football names captains for season opener

MSU has announced who will be the captains for week one against Western Michigan

Mel Tucker doesn’t like to name captains for the whole season, instead, Michigan State does captains on a week to week basis. It is something to keep the players, and the fans, engaged each and every week.

Tucker will be continuing that tradition this year, selecting captains every week seperately, and the team has announced who will be leading the Spartans into the season opener against Western Michigan.

Quarterback Payton Thorne, safety Xavier Henderson and punter Bryce Baringer will be MSU’s captains in week one.

Michigan State football punter Bryce Baringer named to Ray Guy Award watchlist

Michigan State football punter Bryce Baringer named to Ray Guy Award watchlist

Michigan State football’s punter, Bryce Baringer, nearly quit the sport back in 2019. Now, he’s been named to the Ray Guy Award preseason watchlist, an award that’s given annually to the top punter in college football.

This comes just a few months after Mel Kiper Jr. named Baringer his No. 1 ranked punter in the 2023 NFL draft.

This could become quite the story for MSU’s excellent punter.

Michigan State football punter ranked No. 1 on Mel Kiper Jr.’s 2023 NFL draft board

Bryce Baringer is the No. 1 punter on Mel Kiper Jr.’s 2023 NFL draft board

Michigan State football really found something with Bryce Baringer. After not playing in 2019 and nearly hanging up his cleats, Baringer returned in 2020 and has looked like one of the best punters in the country ever since.

Now, Baringer might be poised to not just make the jump to the NFL, but actually be one of the rare punters to be drafted in a middle-round, as ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. recently ranked him the No. 1 punter in the 2023 NFL draft class.

Top five returning punting leaders in the #B1G.

The NFL draft is in the books and the annual spring games have come to an end across the Big Ten and it is time to start diving into who to watch and what to expect during the 2022 season. We already dove into the top five returning rushers, passers, receivers, overall scorers and kick return leaders returning in the Big Ten.

Next, I wanted to provide the top five returning punting leaders in the Big Ten. This may not be the sexiest list, but field position can be vital in close games and this can provide some insight to who may dominate in that aspect of the game.

Off we go.

Three Michigan State football players back for a sixth season

The Spartans will have three players back for their sixth season of eligibility

Michigan State’s football program released its spring football roster on Monday ahead of the start of spring practice. Apart of the roster reveal was the good news that three of Michigan State’s seniors will be returning to school for a sixth season, using an extra year of eligibility because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

TE Tyler Hunt, OL Matt Carrick and P Bryce Baringer will all be returning to East Lansing for an additional season.

All three are very welcomed additions. Tyler Hunt will provide veteran stability to the tight end spot while younger players like Maliq Carr and Jack Nickel prepare to take the role. Matt Carrick will give the Spartans much-needed depth on the interior offensive line, being able to spell both guard positions off the bench. Lastly, Bryce Baringer was one of the nation’s best punters a year ago, bringing him back will give MSU a strong advantage.

The legend is coming back to East Lansing for one more ride. On Thursday, Michigan State football punter Bryce Baringer announced that he will be using his extra year of eligibility from COVID to return to the school for a sixth and final season.

Baringer emerged as one of the best punters in the country and was named Second Team All-Big Ten. This is a meteoric rise for a guy who didn’t even play in 2019 and many thought would not return after that. This is a huge get for the Spartans to get one of their biggest assets back for one more season.

Michigan State football returner Jayden Reed, punter Bryce Baringer named Second Team All-Big Ten

While this might not have been the absolute best year for Michigan State football on special teams, they did have two very special players on that unit, both returning punts and kicks, and sending punts. Because of that, Jayden Reed and Bryce Baringer have been named Second Team All-Big Ten special teams by both the media and coaches.

Jayden Reed has emerged as one of the top return specialists in the country, returning 2 punts for touchdowns this year.

Baringer became a weapon in his own right, allowing Mel Tucker to play a field position game in many contests due to his booming leg. He averaged 48.6 yards per punt this year.
