Thoughts on another Ohio State Basketball loss, its fifth straight

Another ugly conclusion. #GoBucks

Entering the New Year, the [autotag]Ohio State Buckeyes[/autotag] basketball team was 10-3 and looked like one of the best teams in the conference. New Year’s Day would be their last win, proceeding to drop five straight, their most recent tonight to a very average Nebraska team, 63-60.

It’s added to a very frustrating time for Buckeye basketball, inching towards .500 with every loss. Head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] must have a warm seat right now, but with a few more losses it could be getting hotter.

Not much good came from this game, especially given the level of the opponent along with the long losing streak. This season has become increasingly frustrating and here some thoughts on the most recent loss.

What we learned about Ohio State basketball’s loss to Minnesota

It feels like we keep saying it, but this loss hurts #GoBucks

This wasn’t how the Ohio State basketball team envisioned playing against a [autotag]Minnesota[/autotag] team that had yet to win a conference game this season. The Gophers battled [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] all game, and never folded and kept playing hard.

The Buckeyes wouldn’t be able to match the visitors’ energy, resulting in a third loss in a row and potentially some panic starting in Columbus. The loss sends the Buckeyes to a 10-6 record.

Head coach [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] got his starting center back, [autotag]Zed Key[/autotag] (even though he came off the bench), but it wasn’t enough for Ohio State to get back into the win column.

It obviously wasn’t all pretty for the Buckeyes and here is what we learned about their 70-67 disappointing loss to Minnesota.

What we learned about Ohio State’s road loss to Maryland

Not the Buckeyes best effort #GoBucks

The Buckeyes held a lead going into the half, but the start of the second stanza would be crushing for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag]. [autotag]Maryland[/autotag] would build a 14-point lead and never relinquished it through the end of the game, winning 80-73.

It was the second loss in-a-row for the basketball Bucks, who fell to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. It is the first losing streak this season and the Big Ten portion of the schedule is just getting started.

There wasn’t much good to come out of this game, as it was a struggle for Ohio State much of the contest even with the halftime lead. Find out what we learned from this Buckeye defeat.

It was a true tale of two halves for Ohio State but they pulled out the victory and finished off the year with a 9-3 record after defeating Alabama A&M 90-59. In this game we saw the return of two Buckeyes ahead of a stretch of conference play.

There were plenty of good things that came with this win for Chris Holtmann and this ever improving group. The freshman continue to impress and the depth obviously increased with two Bucks competing back after time off. Here is what we learned from Ohio State’s solid win against an overmatched Alabama A&M team before the New Year’s Eve and the big game.

What we learned about Ohio State’s rout of Maine

The Buckeyes get back in the win column and there was plenty we learned about their rout #GoBucks

The Ohio Sate basketball team got back in the win column tonight against [autotag]Maine[/autotag], as they led the game from start to finish, culminating in a 95-61 win for [autotag]the Buckeyes hoopsters[/autotag].

Even though the competition wasn’t has high as some of their previous opponents, there was plenty to learn about how [autotag]Chris Holtmann[/autotag] and his team would respond after the loss to North Carolina.

There were plenty of positives from this win and there were more than a few encouraging aspects of the Buckeyes’ play as they moved their record to 8-3 on the season, with Big Ten play right around the corner.

What we learned about Ohio State following the OT loss to North Carolina

Here are some things we took away from Ohio State’s loss to North Carolina Saturday. #GoBucks

At one point during the second half, it looked as though the Buckeyes were going to pull away from the Tar Heels. But last year’s NCAA Tournament runners-up would not go away. They battled back and showed why it is so important to have veteran leadership.

The young Buckeyes struggled down the stretch, and the older UNC squad took advantage of the situation. This will be a tough loss to swallow, but there were still a few things that the Buckeyes did that will help them later in the year.

Here are a few things that we learned about [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] after their tough 89-84 overtime loss to [autotag]North Carolina[/autotag].

SEC legacy recruit eyeing Clemson visit this spring

This fast-rising Peach State defensive back has been in contact with Clemson co-defensive coordinators Wesley Goodwin and Mickey Conn. In a conversation with The Clemson Insider earlier this week, Milton (Alpharetta, Ga.) three-star Bryce Thornton said that he would like to visit Clemson for spring practice next month.

Thornton — a 5-11, 185-pound junior — announced via social media Friday that he will be at the University of Alabama come March 5. So while Thornton will not be in attendance for Clemson’s Junior Day, he’s already thinking about making a trip to The Valley in the near future.

He has participated at the Dabo Swinney Camp in the past, so any return visit won’t be his first time on campus. Clemson is looking at him as a safety, this time around though, hence why Conn has been his lead recruiter to this point.

“I really loved being down there,” Thornton said. “Then, I was playing cornerback and I was talking to Coach (Mike) Reed a lot. I just like the campus and how the coaches and players were helping me. I liked it a lot.”

Conn has been in contact with Thornton for the past 2-3 months and they’ve built a foundation of a strong relationship. Thornton estimates that he’s in contact with Clemson’s safeties coach just about every three days, as they check in on one another.

What does Conn like about his game?

“They tell me they like how I play and my instincts, how I tackle and the speed I play at,” he said.

Thornton feels like he’s a playmaker on the defensive side of the football and described himself as such. He didn’t go into much further detail about his playstyle, he’d rather be known for someone who just loves to play the game of football.

Across his junior campaign this past season, the talented safety prospect recorded six interceptions, doubling his total from the season prior. He also tripled his total tackle numbers.

Thornton currently ranks as the No. 43 safety in the class of 2023, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. It’s only a matter of time before he’s considered one of the top safeties in the nation, as he continues to shoot up recruiting boards across the country.

Prior to Jan. 1, he already held 10 offers from Power 5 programs across the country. Since then, he’s been re-offered by the new coaching staff(s) at the University of Miami and Oregon and added offers from Pittsburgh, Georgia State, ECU, Louisville, Texas, Jackson State, Kentucky, Mizzou, Mississippi State, UConn and Liberty.

While the recruitment process can be a daunting task, Thornton is fortunate to have his older brother, Bruce, who is committed to the Ohio State University to play basketball and is one of the top recruits in the country. At the same time, Bryce’s dad, also named Bruce, played college football at the University of Georgia in the early 2000s and was later selected in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL draft.

“They’ve been a great resource for me,” Bryce said of his father and brother. “They told me to have fun with the process and just try to enjoy as much as I can before I have to make a decision. They’ve also taught me to just keep working and everything’s gonna fall into place.”

Right now, Bryce is keeping an open mind, as far as his recruitment is concerned. He laid out what he’s looking for in a school at the next level in pretty simple terms: can they help him get to the NFL and can they help him become a better man?

Watch Ohio State basketball commit Bruce Thornton score at will

Ohio State hoops commit, Bruce Thornton, dropped 34 points in the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions. #GoBucks

The future looks bright for the Ohio State basketball team. Four-star point guard, Bruce Thornton, is primed to head to Columbus next year but has some unfinished business to tend to in high school before making the transition.

Thornton’s Milton (Ga.) high school team played in the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Missouri over the weekend where they took home third place over Chicago’s Whitney Young high school. The bigger story was Thornton who dropped 34 points in the win.

The game’s leading scoring almost equaled Whitney Young’s entire output as the Dolphins only scored 37 total points. In case you’re wondering, Whitney Young is no slouch either, boasting multiple D1 players including AJ Casey who has committed to the Miami Hurricanes.

Take a look at the incoming point guard, who looks to be one of the top scorers in the country.

Thornton is the No. 6 ranked point guard in the country according to 247Sports composite rankings and a top 50 player overall.
