9 best free agent pass rushers after Jadeveon Clowney joined Ravens

The Jaguars showed brief interest in Jadeveon Clowney, but now he’s off the market. Could anyone else catch the team’s eye?

The pass rushing market was already thin Friday morning, but got it a little thinner when Jadeveon Clowney decided to join the Baltimore Ravens.

Clowney, 30, previously visited the Jacksonville Jaguars, but left without a contract. The team’s interest in a free agent pass rusher made sense given the Jaguars finished 26th in the NFL in sacks last season and didn’t make many changes at the position in the offseason.

Given the brief interest in Clowney, it’d make sense if the Jaguars peeked at the rest of the market.

Here are the best edge rushers still available with three weeks left until the regular season begins:

11 remaining free-agent pass rushers the Panthers could still sign

If the Panthers venture into free agency for a pass rusher, here are 11 notable players they could scoop off the market:

If this summer’s pass-rushing competition doesn’t result in a clear partner for Pro Bowler Brian Burns, the Carolina Panthers may be venturing into free agency to pick a winner. And if they do, here are 11 notable edge defenders they could choose from:

NFL Free Agency: Saints sign Seahawks legend Jimmy Graham

The Saints have signed Seahawks legend Jimmy Graham.

The New Orleans Saints have signed tight end Jimmy Graham, who played for the Seattle Seahawks from 2015-2017. Since then Graham has put in two years with the Green Bay Packers and two more with the Chicago Bears. He was out of the league last season.

Before all that of course Graham was the most dominant pass-catching tight end in the NFC for the Saints. He was originally picked in the third round of the 2010 NFL draft by New Orleans and was a huge factor in their peak Drew Brees teams being one of Seattle’s top rivals during the prime Legion of Boom years.

Graham has a unique history with both franchises, having been on the other side of a legendary on-field trash-talking incident with Bruce Irvin in the 2013 season and later getting traded to the Seahawks in exchange for a first-round pick and center Max Unger. Graham only had two touchdowns his first year in Seattle but he racked up 16 over the next two seasons.

This time around in New Orleans Graham joins a tight ends room led by Taysom Hill and also featuring Juwan Johnson, Foster Moreau, Lucas Krull, Miller Forristall, and Jesse James.

Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett is finally getting a ring.

Seattle’s highly-underrated wideout got married this weekend, and several of his teammates – both past and present – showed up for the festivities. Here’s a photo with Bobby Wagner, Quandre Diggs, DK Metcalf, K.J. Wright, Bruce Irvin, Geno Smith and Russell Wilson right next to the groom.

Congratulations to Tyler!

NFL Free Agency: These 14 former Seahawks are still available

Here are 14 players who were on the Seahawks roster last year and are still as yet unsigned.

The Seattle Seahawks have for the most part filled out their 90-man roster for the summer. However, there’s always churning going on at the bottom end of the roster, as we saw yesterday when cornerback Artie Burns re-signed a one-year deal and rookie nose tackle Robert Cooper was waived to make room for him. Burns takes one name off the market, but there are still several former Seattle players who remain free agents.

3 Studs and 2 Duds in Seahawks’ 19-16 OT win over Rams

A look at the Studs and Duds from the Seattle Seahawks crazy overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams to keep their playoff hopes alive.

They never make it easy, do they? The Seattle Seahawks once again left the Pacific Northwest holding its breath but ultimately prevailed in a 19-16 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams. It is the first time the Seahawks have ever swept coach Sean McVay, and the first time Seattle swept the season series versus the Rams since the 2013 Super Bowl XLVIII season.

The Seahawks finish the regular season 9-8, improving upon their 7-10 record last year and a far cry from the 3-to-4-win team many predicted at the beginning of the season.

Seattle still has a chance at the playoffs, and I will discuss that at the end of the article. But for now, let us take a look at this game’s 3 Studs and 2 Duds.

Bruce Irvin: Thursday night games should be illegal

Thursday Night Football is an abomination.

Thursday Night Football is an abomination. Seahawks veteran Bruce Irvin can certainly attest to that. Now 35 years old and having played 134 career regular season games, it takes more than just three days for his body to recover from a pro football game.

On Twitter last night Irvin remarked that he’s still sore from Sunday’s loss to the Panthers and thinks Thursday night games should be illegal.

We’re all on board for eliminating TNF entirely, but the NFL does not surrender revenue willingly – no matter the cost to player safety. Amazon is paying the league $1 billion a year for the rights to Thursday night games.

TNF games are often sloppier than usual and this one has the potential to get particularly ugly. Geno Smith is struggling with turnovers, the Seahawks are down to scraps at running back and they’re about to face a 49ers team with the best defense in the league. They rank first in fewest yards and points allowed and second in DVOA.

The Niners also crushed Seattle 27-7 back in Week 2.

On the other hand, San Francisco has its own injuries to deal with. Deebo Samuel will be out a few weeks and rookie QB Brock Purdy suffered a rib injury on Sunday and has been limited at practice. If he can’t go, the Niners will look to their No. 4 quarterback, the recently-re-signed Josh Johnson. He is 1-8 as a starter in his career.

Bruce Irvin calls out Seahawks defense: ‘It’s man on man’

The sad truth is that aside from a strong four-game stretch from Weeks 6-9 this defense has been straight up bad otherwise, especially against the run.

The Carolina Panthers physically punished the Seattle Seahawks on the ground in their win on Sunday, much to the delight of commentator Mark Schlereth. Carolina ran variations of the same play over and over, relying on their linemen to simply out-muscle their opponents. In the end, they totaled over 200 rushing yards and two touchdowns – which wasn’t the first or the second time that’s happened to Seattle this season.

After it was over Bruce Irvin called out the defense, saying all 11 players need to adopt his mentality.

This is the right attitude to have for any defender and there’s something to be said for beating your guy. However, when the team keeps losing for the same reason it falls on the coaches to find a solution.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll calls Munich field conditions a ‘nightmare,’ but equal

Carroll called the field conditions a nightmare, but one both sides had to deal with.

Figuratively speaking, the Seahawks didn’t find their footing against the Buccaneers until the fourth quarter in Sunday’s five-point loss. In a much more literal sense Seattle’s players had an awful time with the playing surface at Allianz Arena, a venue with a dayjob as a soccer stadium.

While NFL teams will switch fields for sports, that hasn’t been the case in international games – something Seahawks long snapper Tyler Ott pointed out after the game. Veteran Edge Bruce Irvin has also decried the field conditions. Now, we can add coach Pete Carroll’s voice to the chorus. In his weekly ESPN radio hit, Carroll called the field conditions a nightmare, but one both sides had to deal with.

While it’s technically true that both teams struggled, on film the Seahawks seemed to have more issues with their footing, especially when it mattered. Tom Brady’s hilarious slip and trip on Tariq Woolen’s interception aside, Tampa didn’t seem to suffer much in any critical plays because of the field.

While fans should still be feeling pretty good heading into the bye week, Carroll has admitted that this loss was a real missed opportunity. Time will tell how the rest of the season plays out but it’s exactly the kind of thing that could be the difference between hosting a playoff game and visiting one of their conference rivals.

Nevertheless, the team and everybody involved seemed to enjoy the trip to Germany. Carroll says they’re down to return as soon as the NFL allows it.

Bruce Irvin echoes Tyler Ott on ‘terrible ass’ field conditions at Allianz Arena

Irvin stuffed Rachaad White on the first snap of the game and finished with a season-high four tackles

The Seahawks and Buccaneers both had to play on the same surface in yesterday’s game. It seemed Seattle had worse luck with the grass at Allianz Arena, though. In several key moments they had players slip and fall.

After the game, long snapper Tyler Ott called out the NFL for going out of its way to change fields for visiting soccer teams and then sending their own to international stadiums with field conditions not suited for football.

Today, Bruce Irvin echoed that sentiment, calling it a “terrible ass” field.

Irvin stuffed Rachaad White on the first snap of the game and finished with a season-high four tackles. He also had a hand in igniting the defense on the sidelines with a fiery speech after falling behind 14-0.

Even though they rallied in the fourth quarter, an atrocious fumble by Geno Smith after Cody Barton’s interception doomed their chances of a comeback.
