Lions elevate two from practice squad to face the Vikings in Week 16

Lions elevate Michael Badgley and Anthony Firkser from the practice squad to face the Vikings in Week 16

In advance of Sunday’s matchup with the Vikings in Minnesota, the Detroit Lions have elevated two players from the practice squad to the active roster.

As expected, kicker Michael Badgley was promoted for the Week 16 game. It’s the second elevation in a row for Badgley, who beat out Riley Patterson in an in-season kicking competition. Players are allowed three elevations per season.

Tight end Anthony Firsker was also elevated. It’s the first elevation for the 6-year vet, who has not played yet in 2023. He will fill the role of reserve TE Brock Wright, who has been ruled out with an injury for the game after not practicing throughout the week.

The Lions did not elevate EDGE Bruce Irvin for the game. He will not play against Minnesota

Lions elevate veterans Bruce Irvin and Michael Badgley from the practice squad for Week 15

In advance of Saturday night’s game at Ford Field, the Detroit Lions have elevated two players from the practice squad to the active roster.

Defensive end Bruce Irvin and kicker Michael Badgley have been promoted for the Week 15 matchup against the Denver Broncos. It’s the second elevation for Irvin, who was also moved up for the Week 13 game. Badgley has not played in Detroit this year after spending most of the 2022 season as the teams kicker.

Regular kicker Riley Patterson did not have any injury issues noted through the week,  which makes Badgley’s elevation an interesting choice. Badgley does have longer field goal range than Patterson, but not by a large distance.

Here’s what Dan Campbell said about Lions players coming back from injuries

Here’s what Dan Campbell said about Lions players coming back from injuries, including James Houston and Frank Ragnow

One of the reasons the Detroit Lions have lost two of their last three games is a litany of crucial injuries. While some of the players, including Pro Bowl left guard Jonah Jackson and top linebacker Alex Anzalone, have returned to action, there are still a few who remain sidelined.

Head coach Dan Campbell spent a fair portion of his press conference on Monday updating the status of many of the injured Detroit players. Campbell addressed several Lions and their potential returns. It is a list that includes currently active players as well as some who are attempting to return from injured reserve.

Derek Carr injured on a big hit by Lions pass rusher Bruce Irvin

Derek Carr was injured on a big hit by Lions pass rusher Bruce Irvin, with Jameis Winston entering to replace him:

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr was rocked on a big hit from Detroit Lions defender Bruce Irvin, and he had to leave the game with assistance from the training staff. Irvin was fouled for roughing the passer on the play. A trainer’s cart initially came out to ferry Carr to the locker room but he waved it off to leave under his own power.

It’s the third time this year Carr has left the game with an injury; he was knocked out of losses to the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings with injuries to his throwing shoulder and a concussion. The nature of this injury and whether he’ll be able to return late in the fourth quarter is unclear. Jameis Winston is filling in for him. Stay tuned.

Update: The Saints announced that Carr was doubtful to return after entering concussion protocol and receiving treatment for back and shoulder injuries.

Lions elevate Bruce Irvin and Quinton Bohanna for Week 13

Irvin is set to make his Lions debut against New Orleans

Veteran pass rusher Bruce Irvin is set to make his debut in a Detroit Lions uniform in Week 13. The team elevated Irvin and defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna from the practice squad for Sunday’s matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

Irvin was signed to the practice squad in November but has not been elevated until this week. With the Lions pass rush struggling of late–only two sacks in three games–moving up Irvin is worth the try.

Bohanna has filled in capably in being elevated the last two games. If the Lions wish to play the big nose tackle again beyond Week 13, they’ll need to add him to the active roster.

The Lions also announced that injured LB Alex Anzalone did not travel with the team and was downgraded from doubtful to out, as was widely expected.

Dan Campbell opens the door for Bruce Irvin to play vs. Saints

Irvin, currently on the Lions practice squad, has 3.5 sacks over the last three seasons

The much-maligned Detroit Lions pass rush could get a shot in the arm in Week 13 against the Saints. Head coach Dan Campbell opened the door for Bruce Irvin to play as a potential practice squad elevation.

In his weekly radio visit with 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit, Campbell indicated it could be time to try the veteran.

“Potentially,” Campbell told the hosts. “We’re looking at everybody. And he’s a guy that we’ve got our eye on.”

Irvin would be a shot-in-the-dark potential solution for Detroit, which has two sacks in three weeks. The 36-year-old Irvin signed with the Lions practice squad prior to the Week 11 matchup against the Bears. Irvin has bounced around a lot; the Lions are his sixth team since 2018. He’s managed just 3.5 sacks in the last three seasons.

Bruce Irvin not expected to play vs. Packers

Recent practice squad addition Bruce Irvin is not expected to play vs. Packers based on Dan Campbell’s assessment

Don’t expect to see recent practice squad addition Bruce Irvin in the Detroit Lions lineup on Thursday. Head coach Dan Campbell was pretty clear in ruling out Irvin from being promoted for the Thanksgiving visit from the Green Bay Packers.

Irvin was added to the practice squad last week after a rough outing from the Lions pass rush. Detroit’s pressure was better in the game against the Chicago Bears and Justin Fields, but still could use more oomph and finishing ability. But Irvin hasn’t yet shown Campbell or the Lions coaches that he can help.

Here’s what Campbell said when asked if Irvin would play in Week 12 against Green Bay,

“Yeah, it’s possible. I still don’t see that happening, not right now. We want to be smart. We want to be smart with how we do it. And he’s – look, he’s working, he’s learning it, he’s in good shape and I just think – just want to be smart with how we proceed here.”

Irvin is 36 and was unsigned all year until the Lions added him to the practice squad. Detroit is his sixth team in as many years, including two nonconsecutive seasons in Seattle. The Lions are healthy at the DE/OLB spots, too.

Lions officially sign Jake McQuaide, add Bruce Irvin to practice squad

McQuaide becomes the oldest player on the Lions roster

A couple of Detroit Lions roster moves that were widely anticipated became official on Wednesday. The Lions signed long snapper Jake McQuaide from the practice squad to the active roster. Detroit also added veteran EDGE Bruce Irvin to the practice squad to fill the spot opened by McQuaide’s promotion.

McQuaide played in the Week 10 win over the Chargers as a practice squad elevation. Regular long snapper Scott Daly went on injured reserve after Week 8. McQuaide, 35, is now the oldest player on the Lions roster. He’s in his 13th NFL season, the first 10 of which were with the Los Angeles Rams.

Irvin is technically older than McQuaide at 36, but the practice squad doesn’t count in the official tally. His addition was known on Tuesday after working out for the Lions, but did not become official until Wednesday’s practice.

Bruce Irvin announces that he has signed with the Detroit Lions

The latest stop for Bruce is Detroit.

The top of the Seahawks 2012 draft class is still going strong 11 years later. Russell Wilson has rebounded from his rough 2022 campaign and looks to be himself again with the Broncos. Meanwhile, Bobby Wagner has kept on playing middle linebacker at an elite level and Bruce Irvin continues to find work and contribute meaningfully every year.

The latest stop for Bruce is Detroit. Yesterday on Instagram Irvin announced that he has signed with the Lions.

Irvin is up to 138 regular season games played in his career between the Seahawks, the Raiders, the Falcons, the Panthers, the Seahawks again, the Bears, the Seahawks yet again and now the Lions. All together he has totaled 55.5 sacks and 129 quarterback hits.

At this point in his career Irvin is mostly a situational pass rusher, but last season he proved he can still be effective in that role. Irvin posted 28 pressures in just 11 games with Seattle in 2022.

Lions are signing veteran EDGE Bruce Irvin to the practice squad

Irvin bagged 3.5 sacks for the Seahawks in 2022

In search of more potential help on the pass rush, the Detroit Lions are bringing in veteran Bruce Irvin. Per numerous reports, Irvin is signing with the Lions practice squad.

Detroit opened the space on the practice squad earlier in the day by releasing running back Devine Ozigbo. By adding Irvin, the Lions should remain hopeful that Irvin has plenty left in the tank as the 36-year old veteran is playing for his 5th team in as many seasons.

Irvin was the 15th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft to the Seattle Seahawks. During that time it was surprising to see Irvin selected that high as the national media didn’t have him predicted to be a first round pick. However, he had become a top draft pick due to his strong Scouting Combine performance where he ran a 4.50 second 40-yard dash and 6.70 second time in the 3-cone drill.

Overall, he spent six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks where he posted 25.5 sacks and 31 tackles-for-loss. In addition to that, he spent three seasons with the Raiders and spent time with the Bears, Falcons and Panthers. Last season, Irvin played for the Seahawks and he posted 3.5 sacks with 10 games started.

This move might not necessarily move the needle to give the Lions an elite edge rusher opposite of Aidan Hutchinson. However, it does give them another body to try and add into their rotation as they await the return of James Houston. Head coach Dan Campbell said to the media today that “late December” seems like the ideal timeline for a potential return from Houston.

Time will tell on James Houston. For now, the Lions move forward with Bruce Irvin. They’ll hope he’ll be able to get up to speed as the Lions push for their first division championship since 1993. To capture that, they’ll need help with their pass rush. Maybe Irvin can provide a spark down the stretch for Detroit.
