Seahawks made offer to Jadeveon Clowney, had to move on with business

The Seahawks have attempted to re-sign defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, however, GM John Schneider made it clear the team is moving forward.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider held their annual pre-draft press conference with the media on Tuesday via Zoom as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

While most of the discussion was related to the 2020 NFL Draft, the two were asked about the current state of negotiations with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who remains an unrestricted free agent.

“We made an effort to re-sign him,” Schneider confirmed. “The door is not closed, but we couldn’t wait any longer, we had to conduct business. Everything was very cordial, he’s a great guy – represented by a great guy . . .  We’ve had great conversations. He’s just going to feel his way through this odd process and we’ll see where that goes.”

With Clowney clearly testing the open market, Seattle added defensive ends Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa back to the roster to assist with the pass rush.

Things could change with Clowney’s camp at any time, but for now, Schneider has made it clear the Seahawks are prepared to move on without him including looking ahead to the NFL draft.

Ranking the Seattle Seahawks’ offseason acquisitions so far

The Seattle Seahawks have acquired nine new players this offseason. Here’s a ranking of each of them, and how they might contribute in 2020

The Seattle Seahawks, as of this writing, have acquired nine new players heading into the 2020 season.

With more additions to come, during both free agency and the draft, it’s hard to know exactly what impact all the newcomers will have on this year’s squad.

However – we can take some guesses based on their history, Seattle’s typical use of players, and various other factors.

The following is a ranking of Seattle’s nine new players, with analysis on their potential impact on the team in 2020.

This list is not to be taken as an order of talent, but rather the best fit for the team, based on the current roster construction and expected use.

Should the Seahawks pursue a reunion with DE Dion Jordan?

The Seahawks are already in the mood to bring back former pass rushers, and reuniting with Dion Jordan would be a good low-cost gamble.

It’s no secret the Seattle Seahawks need help rushing the passer. The hope throughout the offseason has been to reunite with Jadeveon Clowney and to potentially add another big name piece as well, like Everson Griffen, Yannick Ngakoue or Matthew Judon.

So far none of that has come to fruition, with the Seahawks biding their time while shoring up their depth in the form of a pair of old friends: Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa, two veteran pass rushers who played with the team during the Legion of Boom era.

While the Seahawks certainly need to add at least one big name rusher, ideally Clowney, they could continue to add depth pieces to bring into training camp, hoping the collective unit will help form a solid pass rush in 2020.

Another name the team could consider, since they are on the reunion track, is Dion Jordan.

Jordan spent the 2019 season with the Raiders, appearing in seven games and racking up two sacks. He was with the Seahawks in 2017 and 2018, and while injuries limited him to just 17 total games, he did accrue 5.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles.

Jordan has had plenty of red flags in his career, namely injury and disciplinary related, but the former third overall pick has proven capable of getting to the quarterback when he’s healthy, and he’s familiar with coach Pete Carroll’s defensive scheme and what his role would be.

Seahawks finalize signing of defensive end Benson Mayowa

The Seattle Seahawks how now finalized the signing of defensive end Benson Mayowa to the roster.

The Seattle Seahawks have signed a familiar defensive end back to the roster but his name is not Jadeveon Clowney. Seattle has now officially announced Benson Mayowa is under contract, a move that was first reported last week.

Mayowa first joined the Seahawks in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of Idaho. After one season in Seattle, he spent time with the Raiders (two stints) the Cardinals and the Cowboys.

His one-year deal is reported to be worth over $3 million fully guaranteed, with up to another million in incentives, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Mayowa joins defensive end Bruce Irvin as former Seahawks who have been re-signed to the roster from other teams, reuniting in Seattle.  Both of these moves don’t necessarily rule out a return for Clowney, however, it shows the Seahawks aren’t just going to sit idly by while he continues to test the open market.

Russell Wilson to Jadeveon Clowney: ‘I need you, homie’

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson made a plea for Jadeveon Clowney to come back to Seattle during his Instagram live Q&A session.

Russell Wilson, like most Seattle fans, has been very vocal about his desire to see star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney in a Seahawks uniform in 2020.

During a Q&A session on his Instagram account, Wilson was asked about Clowney’s free agency and he reiterated his feelings, even calling out Clowney directly.

“Clowney come back,” Wilson said in his response. “If you are listening bro. We’ve got another Super Bowl to win, man. We need you. We need you to come back Clowney. Clowney, Clowney if you can hear me, please come back, bro. I need you homie.”

Wilson originally mentioned Clowney as a player he would love to see return to the squad back in January, when he was clamoring for more superstar talent on the team.

“Jadeveon is a big-time guy that we would love to get back on our football team,” Wilson said. “He was so good in the locker room. He brought so many just havoc plays to the field.”

Clowney is the last remaining domino on the free agent market for edge rushers, and players like Everson Griffen are waiting for him to sign before they make their moves.

The Seahawks have maintained interest in the former first overall pick, although recent additions like Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa lowered the team’s available cap space – which likely means an addition would require another cut to clear room.

Stil – many feel Seattle is Clowney’s most likely destination, thanks in part to their advanced knowledge of his medical situation.

However, it could be a while until he makes his decision, so the wait continues.

Seahawks bring back DE Benson Mayowa on 1-year deal

The Seattle Seahawks brought back another former player to help with the pass rush, coming to terms with Benson Mayowa on a 1-year deal.

The Seattle Seahawks are bringing back another former player to help out their ailing pass rush, agreeing to terms with Benson Mayowa on a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Mayowa’s deal will net him over $3 million in guaranteed money, and could reach over $4 million with incentives.

The return of Mayowa does not indicate the Seahawks are out on Jadeveon Clowney, although it does make the financials a little harder to work through. However, with many other second-tier pass rushers coming off the market, the Seahawks likely felt they had to strike quickly to avoid coming out of free agency empty handed, outside of Bruce Irvin.

Mayowa played in two games with Seattle back in 2013, signing with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Idaho.

He’s bounced around the league since then, playing for the Raiders in two separate stints, along with the Cardinals and the Cowboys in between.

All told, the 28-year-old has 20 career sacks to his name, including a career-high seven last year with Oakland.

He’ll give the Seahawks excellent depth on the outside at a relatively affordable price while they look to continue shoring up areas of need ahead of the 2020 NFL draft.

Seahawks at No. 11 in Touchdown Wire’s mid-free agency power rankings

The Seattle Seahawks have landed at No. 11 in Touchdown Wire’s mid-free agency power rankings.

Now that the first wave of NFL free agency is in the books, it’s time to take a look at where teams stand after a little roster adjusting.

The Seahawks have added a few key additions to the squad over the last week, including linebacker Bruce Irvin, cornerback Quinton Dunbar, guard B.J. Finney and tight end Greg Olsen much earlier in the offseason.

For their efforts so far, Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield ranks Seattle at No. 11 in Touchdown Wire’s mid-free agency power rankings.

“The biggest question right now is where Jadeveon Clowney winds up,” Schofield notes. “If he returns to the Seahawks, that would definitely boost their stock. Adding Irvin is a nice acquisition, as the Seahawks struggled to generate consistent pressure last year and Irvin tallied 8.5 sacks a season ago, his career high. Seattle also absolutely stole cornerback Quinton Dunbar, one of the most effective players at his position in 2019, for a fifth-round pick.”

“They lost George Fant to the New York Jets, but adding pieces such as Finney will help the offensive line somewhat,” Schofield continues. “Plus, having a mobile quarterback such as Russell Wilson works to mitigate any mistakes or deficiencies up front. Olson is a solid tight end, provided he remains healthy, but the organizations hedged their bets at that position by assigning a second-round tender on Jacob Hollister and inking Luke Willson to a contract extension.”

Regardless of the moves they’ve made so far, the Seahawks will never stop tweaking their roster so expect another wave of depth signings in the near future.

Jadeveon Clowney may take 1-year deal to reestablish value

The Seattle Seahawks could pounce on a one-year deal with Jadeveon Clowney if he chooses to go that route and reestablish his value.

The first week of free agency has not gone according to plan for free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.

The market for a defensive end with three sacks last year, and some concerning injury issues, has not reached the $20 million per year threshold he was hoping for.

Now, a report from Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle indicates Clowney may be willing to take a one-year deal to reestablish his value, and his health, in order to reenter the market in 2021 when the salary cap is expected to increase by a hefty margin.

This could be bad news for the Seahawks. Although the team currently has roughly $18 million in cap space, they have a handful of players they could cut or restructure contracts for in order to clear space.

However, signing Clowney to a long-term deal would allow the team to spread some of his money out over a handful of seasons, which could afford them more flexibility in the short term.

Clowney may still ultimately land a lucrative multi-year deal, and it could still come from the Seahawks, but the slow to develop market makes it more likely he’ll take a one-year deal.

Seattle could have an advantage in that Clowney may want to return somewhere he is familiar if it is just for one season, but it will create a tricky salary cap situation – but one that could be worked around if it nets them a bigtime player like Clowney.

Seahawks select EDGE in latest USA TODAY mock draft

Penn State defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos remains a popular target for the Seattle Seahawks in mocks as we get closer to the NFL draft.

The start of free agency has monumentally shifted a handful of team’s priorities as they head into the 2020 NFL draft.

The Seattle Seahawks have been hard at work collecting pieces for their revamped offensive line, which will for sure be without George Fant and likely won’t have Germain Ifedi anymore either.

The team has yet to bring back star pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, although they did come to terms with Jarran Reed and former Seahawk Bruce Irvin, giving them two players with extensive experience rushing the quarterback.

That didn’t stop USA TODAY from mocking pass rusher Yetur Gross-Matos to the Seahawks in their latest mock draft, even with the new additions.

“Regardless of whether Jadeveon Clowney re-signs or bolts, Seattle’s pass rush could stand for an infusion of speed even after Bruce Irvin’s return,” Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote.

Gross-Matos recorded 17 sacks and 34.5 tackles for loss in his final two years at Penn State, and with some refinement most scouts believe he will become an above average or elite pass rusher at the next level.

With or without Clowney, the Seahawks need more bodies to come in and get to the quarterback next year, and if they choose to keep pick No. 27 in the draft, Gross-Matos would be an excellent addition to the team.

Twitter reacts to return of DE Bruce Irvin to the Seahawks

Perhaps no one was happier than Bruce Irvin to be returning to Seattle to play for the Seahawks, but Twitter had some reactions.

The Seattle Seahawks added the first piece of their pass rush puzzle into the fold on Wednesday, agreeing to terms with veteran defensive end Bruce Irvin on a one-year deal.

Irvin spent the first five years of his career in a Seattle uniform after getting drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, the same draft class that also brought Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner to the Seahawks.

Irvin was a fan favorite while in the Emerald City, and no one is more excited than him to be back in the green and blue for the 2020 season.

Of course, his new teammates are pretty happy to see him back home as well, including defensive tackle Jarran Reed, who himself just re-upped with Seattle this past week.

And finally, it wasn’t just NFL players who were happy Irvin is back in Seattle, as the fan base made it clear they are welcoming the 32-year-old versatile pass rusher back with open arms.

Irvin answered a few fan questions after agreeing to return to Seattle as well, including what number he will wear and which restaurant he will go to first:

Irvin’s return will be a much-needed boost for this Seahawks team, both on and off the field.
