Bruce Irvin reacts to KJ Wright joining 49ers coaching staff: ‘Terrible!’

Bruce Irvin reacts to KJ Wright joining 49ers coaching staff: ‘Terrible!’

Over the weekend, the 12th Man was treated to news that did not seem to please anyone. Former Seattle Seahawks great and founding member of the Legion of Boom, K.J. Wright, is joining the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff. The rivalry between the Seahawks and 49ers is as deep as it gets in this league when it comes to pure hate between teams and fanbases.

It turns out the hate still lingers among former players as well, especially for other Legion of Boomers. Fellow linebacker and pass rush specialist Bruce Irvin took to Twitter to react to the news of his former teammate joining San Francisco in a now-deleted tweet.

Of course, it is hard to imagine Irvin is truly angry at his former teammate. Objectively it is a great opportunity for Wright if he wants to get into coaching. That being said, it is also hard to disagree with Irvin’s sentiments.

The 49ers are easily Seattle’s biggest rival, and any game between them and the Seahawks from 2012-2014 was practically a clash of the Titans. Wright and Irvin were involved in plenty of games that made life miserable for those playing for San Francisco.

Seeing Wright in the red and gold will be a tough sight for 12’s.

4 burning questions ahead of Dolphins-Chiefs wild-card battle

Four burning questions ahead of Dolphins vs. Chiefs.

The Miami Dolphins are headed to Kansas City for a matchup with the Chiefs during the wild-card round of the postseason. Miami was hoping to host a couple of playoff games this season and was on track to do so most of the year. Unfortunately, the loss to the Buffalo Bills last week cost them the AFC East.

The Dolphins now hold the No. 6 seed and will be on the road for the playoffs. This was a massive flip in the standings, considering Miami held first place in the AFC East for 16 out of 18 weeks during the regular season. Both Miami and Kansas City hold records of 11-6 in 2023.

The Dolphins have a short week to get ready for one of the most anticipated playoff runs in recent history. Here are some of the most burning questions ahead of the wild-card weekend.

Dolphins signing LBs Bruce Irvin, Malik Reed

Miami adding two more on the edge.

The Miami Dolphins have had some bad luck with injuries at the linebacker position in recent weeks, losing Bradley Chubb,  Jaelan Phillips, Andrew Van Ginkel, Jerome Baker and Cameron Goode for the season.

After reportedly signing Justin Houston on Monday, the Dolphins are adding more talent on the edge, as they’re signing Bruce Irvin to the active roster and Malik Reed to their practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Irvin, 36, was once among the best outside linebacker in the game, recording 56.5 sacks in his career. He played just two games for the Detroit Lions this season recording just one sack.

Reed, 27, is probably a familiar name to Dolphins fans, as he spent this past offseason with Miami and was on the roster through the preseason. Since then, he’s played four games for the Las Vegas Raiders this season, recording three tackles.

Miami needs all the help they can get on the edge, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see these guys get meaningful reps on Saturday.

Dolphins add ex-Lions EDGE Bruce Irvin to their playoff roster

The Dolphins have lost their top 6 EDGEs since Thanksgiving

Bruce Irvin had a brief tenure with the Detroit Lions near the end of the 2023 regular season. The veteran pass rusher was on the Lions’ practice squad for several weeks and appeared in three games as an elevation.

When Irvin exhausted his practice squad elevations, the two sides parted ways. Now Irvin has found a new team to ride into the postseason.

The Miami Dolphins signed Irvin on Tuesday to help alleviate their critical injury issues at the EDGE position. Faced with playing without as many as their top six EDGEs due to recent injuries, including losing three in Week 18 alone, the Dolphins added Irvin and fellow vet Justin Houston. The Dolphins play in Kansas City against the Chiefs in wild card weekend.

Irvin managed one sack in his three games in Detroit, as well as a roughing-the-passer penalty that ended the season of Saints QB Derek Carr.

5 NFL free agents who could help your playoff-bound team, including Ndamukong Suh

Which NFL free agents could help your playoff-bound team? There are some good names out there.

The NFL playoffs are right around the corner, and postseason-bound teams are looking over the state of their rosters for a January push.

The Baltimore Ravens bolstered their offense by signing running back Dalvin Cook to the practice squad on Thursday, hinting that more signings like it could be on the way for playoff football.

While some of the players on this list haven’t played all that much this season (if at all), they’re all proven veterans who could factor in for a couple of games to help a team compete for a Super Bowl.

Let’s run down five of these names and try to identify how they could help and which teams make the most sense at this point.

Dan Campbell explains why the Lions parted ways with Isaiah Buggs and Bruce Irvin

Campbell’s tone and message was very different between talking about Buggs and then Irvin

The Detroit Lions parted ways with two defensive linemen this week. Tackle Isaiah Buggs was waived from the active roster on Tuesday, followed by the Lions releasing EDGE Burce Irvin from the practice squad on Wednesday. Both men played in the Week 17 loss to the Cowboys.

Head coach Dan Campbell was asked about the departures during his meeting with the press on Wednesday afternoon.

On Buggs, Campbell did not go into much detail.

“Yeah, I mean, look, those things, they’re – when those things happen, nothing about it is easy, but it’s just – it was the best thing for us and for him. So, I wish him the best of luck,” Campbell said.

Buggs had been a healthy scratch most of the season when Alim McNeill was healthy earlier in the season, and McNeill is now returning from a month-long stint on injured reserve.

The head coach dove quite a bit deeper when discussing Irvin, who was officially waived shortly before this press conference took place.

“Yeah, yeah and that one’s tough too, man. Bruce, what a pro. I mean, he is. He’s been a blessing to have him around here,” Campbell effused. “I mean, he just brings a whole different perspective. I mean, he’s as professional as you get. I mean, just the way he goes about his business, everything about him. And we talked last week, talked again yesterday, had a long talk and so just at this moment, it just – couldn’t totally commit and he’s got stuff going on too. And so, it’s hard. I mean, it’s just one of those, at this point it just wasn’t going to work out. But he’s an absolute stud, he sure is.”

The tangible change in Campbell’s tone and more verbose sendoff for Irvin can only be seen as an indication that the coach still wanted Irvin around. The same cannot be said for Buggs.

Bruce Irvin indicates he’s not on the Lions anymore

Irvin posted on social media that he’s no longer part of the Lions practice squad and is ready to move on

It appears Bruce Irvin’s time on the Detroit Lions practice squad is over. The veteran pass rusher indicated on a social media post that he’s no longer part of the team.

“As a 12-year vet, thank you for the opportunity to be apart (sic) of your team,” Irvin wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “However I’m looking forward to what’s next.”

Irvin was signed to the Lions practice squad in November. He was elevated for the maximum amount of three games when he took the field against the Cowboys in Week 17. In his three games, Irvin recorded one sack in his debut. He was among the Lions’ lowest-graded players by PFF in both Week 15 and Week 17.

Irvin could have still been elevated once the playoffs begin, but it seems the Lions are content to have James Houston returning from injured reserve in the pass rush specialist role Irvin has been filling.

Best and worst PFF grades for the Lions loss vs the Cowboys

The best and worst PFF graded players for the Detroit Lions in their loss against the Dallas Cowboys

Even after a night’s rest, the sting lingers from the Detroit Lions’ 20-19 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, a defeat that can only be described as tough in every sense of the word.

Considering the competitiveness between two playoff-caliber teams, there were pivotal moments in the game where execution could have been different for the Lions. Unfortunately, the conversation now revolves around the referee error that nullified the potential game-winning two-point conversion for the Lions. Overcoming such challenging situations is tough, but this resilient team is poised to move forward, gearing up to face the Minnesota Vikings next week.

While some Lions delivered masterful performances last night, others may hesitate to review the tape. Here are the best and worst PFF grades for the Lions against the Cowboys.

Tre Brown, Bruce Irvin questioning officials after Lions get screwed again

The NFL has no tradition they hold more sacred than screwing over the Detroit Lions.

The NFL has no tradition they hold more sacred than screwing over the Detroit Lions with poor officiating. The Seattle Seahawks benefitted from it earlier this season in their Week 2 win over Detroit, which was marred by horrific officiating from start to finish – much of it going against the Lions. Last night Detroit got the shaft yet again, this time from Brad Allen’s crew.

In case you missed it, it looked like the Lions had pulled off an upset over the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the first visiting team to win in Dallas this year. However, Taylor Decker’s touchdown was wiped out after officials claimed that Decker did not report as an eligible receiver.

The Lions got two more tries at their two-point conversion but couldn’t close the deal. We have since learned that Decker most definitely did report – but it appears that Allen simply ignored him and walked away while Decker was trying to inform him.

Even worse, Lions head coach Dan Campbell says he explained the entire play to officials before the game even started.

It’s an awful way for the Lions to lose such a critical game for playoff positioning. A lot of players are voicing their displeasure with the officiating, including current and former Seahawks. Here’s cornerback Tre Brown calling for refs to have to give press conferences after games.

And here’s Bruce Irvin (currently with the Lions) taking note of Detroit’s 0-6 record and lopsided penalty yardage in games that Brad Allen calls.

Unfortunately this is just the latest footnote in a long, sad history of Detroit suffering a disproportionate amount from NFL officials failing to do their jobs well.

If it’s not going to be the Seahawks, there’s no other team we’d rather see hoisting the Lombardi than the Lions.

Lions sign TE Anthony Firkser, elevate defensive vets Bruce Irvin and Tyson Alualu for Week 17

The Detroit Lions filled their vacancy on the 53-man roster by signing tight end Anthony Firkser from the practice squad. The move comes in advance of Saturday night’s game in Dallas against the Cowboys.

The move was necessitated by tight end Brock Wright being out with a hip injury. Firsker played two offensive snaps in Week 16 as a practice squad elevation. The six-year vet was added to the Lions practice squad earlier this season.

Detroit also elevated two veteran defensive players for the game in Dallas. EDGE Bruce Irvin and DT Tyson Alualu will be up on the active roster for the game. It’s Irvin’s third and final practice squad elevation and the first for Alualu.

Also, the Lions confirmed that CB Chase Lucas is back on the team’s practice squad after going unclaimed on waivers.
