NFL Draft: 6 Vikings defensive targets on day 3

The Minnesota Vikings aren’t likely to have many day three picks, but there are some gems out there to be had.

The Minnesota Vikings are currently slated to have five picks in the 2023 NFL draft. They are likely to use them as currency to trade up and down in the draft.

What they won’t have is 10 picks on day three to add a lot of depth to the roster. Last year, the Vikings drafted six players in round four or later to add depth that was void due to Rick Spielman’s poor drafting.

This year, I expect the Vikings to pick five or less times on day three. Just because they will have less swings doesn’t mean they can’t find talented players. Here are six defensive targets the Vikings should prioritize on day three.

6 offensive targets

30 Browns prospects in 30 days: Brodric Martin, DT, Western Kentucky

Martin could help improve the terrible run defense from last season.

Last year’s run defense, especially in the middle of the defensive line, for the Cleveland Browns was downright dreadful. They have improved it significantly, adding Dalvin Tomlinson in free agency, but there is still work to do. The team needs to add depth in the draft and nose tackle Brodric Martin from Western Kentucky would provide solid depth to stop the run.

Martin is a big powerful player at 6-foot-4 and 337 pounds with long arms that he uses to bat passes down and the line of scrimmage. He knows how to use his arms with decent hand placement and plays with good leverage against offensive linemen. He has the strong base needed to take on double teams and keep his linebackers clean to make plays behind him.

Martin is an older prospect, which could mean Andrew Berry stays away, but he has shown some flashes at times as a pass rusher too. He has a nice swim move that he uses from time to time to split double teams and get after the quarterback.

Breaking down Dane Brugler’s 7-round mock draft for the Colts

Here’s who Dane Brugler had projected for the Colts.

With just over a week until the 2023 NFL draft, the mock drafts will be out in full force as analysts try to project what the Indianapolis Colts and the rest of the league will do.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic dropped a seven-round mock draft Monday and while there were no trades involved at any level, he had the Colts hitting several areas of need.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the mock draft from the Colts’ perspective:

2023 NFL draft: Chargers had meeting with Western Kentucky DT Brodric Martin

The Chargers are looking to shore up the depth chart at the nose tackle position.

The Chargers met with former Western Kentucky defensive tackle Brodric Martin this past Sunday, according to The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler.

Martin totaled 81 tackles, 37 solo tackles, nine tackles for loss, four passes defended, and two sacks during his collegiate career for the Hilltoppers.

Miller also earned an East-West Shrine Bowl invite, where he had two tackles and a fumble recovery.

Towering at 6-foot-4 and 337 pounds with 34 3/8-inch arms, Martin is a stout interior defender who is strong at occupying double teams and eating up space to clear the way for linebackers.

With Austin Johnson and Otito Ogbonnia still working their way back from their significant knee injuries and Breiden Fehoko now on the Steelers, Los Angeles could be in the market for more nose tackle depth.

Martin projects as a sixth or seventh-round selection.

Rams meeting with Western Kentucky DL Brodric Martin

The Rams are meeting with Brodric Martin, the big defensive tackle out of Western Kentucky

The Rams’ defensive line will look much different in 2023. Greg Gaines landed with the Buccaneers in free agency and though A’Shawn Robinson is still available, there are no indications that he’ll be returning to Los Angeles for another season.

That has made the D-line a big priority entering the draft and the Rams have already shown interest in multiple prospects – Western Kentucky nose tackle Brodric Martin among them.

According to Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network, the Rams are meeting with Martin this afternoon after talking to the Chargers on Monday. Martin is projected to be a Day 3 pick but he’s an intriguing prospect with good upside.

He’s 6-foot-4 1/2 and 337 pounds with 34-inch arms, bringing great size to the defensive line as a nose tackle. He had two sacks and 19 total hurries last season at WKU, primarily lining up as the nose tackle up front.

Martin would be a logical replacement for Gaines, even if they’re different types of nose tackles; Gaines is much shorter and compact, whereas Martin has a more impressive frame for a defensive lineman.

Colts’ 7-round mock draft with trades

In this mock draft, the Colts make a few trades early on.

The Indianapolis Colts are less than a month away from the start of the 2023 NFL draft, which means there is going to be a lot of information and projections coming out of the woodwork over the next few weeks.

That includes conducting mock drafts and projecting what the Colts will do with their nine selections. We should expect a number of trades as general manager Chris Ballard has never gone through a draft without making a deal in some capacity.

We’ll be tracking the Colts’ reported interest in the 2023 draft class so be sure to keep up with latest updates via our tracker.

Here’s our latest mock draft projection for the Colts, included with a few trades:

Report: Colts scheduled for top-30 visit with DT Brodric Martin

The Colts are scheduled to host Western Kentucky DT Brodric Martin for a top-30 visit.

The Indianapolis Colts have one of the best interior defensive line duos in the league, but adding depth to both defensive tackle spots is always on the checklist for this regime.

It’s partly why the Colts reportedly have a top-30 visit scheduled with Western Kentucky defensive tackle Brodric Martin, according to Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network.

With DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart leading the way at the top of the defensive tackle depth chart, the need for depth is there. Martin is projected as a Day 3 pick and profiles mostly as a run-stopper working from the one-technique position.

Though we don’t have his testing numbers, Martin is listed at 6-foot-4 and 334 pounds with 34 3/8-inch arms and a wingspan of 84 1/4 inches.

Martin is known for his strength against the run and ability to set an anchor on early downs even if he may be limited as a pass rusher.

Considering the depth needed behind Stewart at the one-technique position, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Martin’s name was called by the Colts on Day 3 of the draft.

Chiefs to host Western Kentucky DT Brodric Martin on top-30 visit

The #Chiefs have another top-30 visit scheduled and this time it’s with a big defensive lineman from Western Kentucky.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to bring in 2023 NFL draft prospects for top-30 visits.

According to The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler, Western Kentucky’s Brodric Martin has a top-30 visit scheduled with the Chiefs (and also another with their Super Bowl LVII opponent the Philadelphia Eagles). Weighing in at 6-foot-4 and 334 pounds at the East-West Shrine Bowl, this hulking defensive tackle prospect is a handful in the trenches. He’s practically immovable in the interior run game, but don’t get it twisted, he has some range to chase down ball carriers too. His 34-inch arms are big for an interior defender and give him an advantage against some of the smaller, squatty interior linemen that he’ll face in the NFL.

As a fifth-year senior in 2022, Martin posted a solid season with the Hilltoppers. The name of his game will always be run-stopping, but he finished the year with 31 total tackles, two tackles for loss, 15 stops, two sacks and 22 pressures on the year.

Kansas City has a lot of needs along the interior defensive line with only three players currently under contract for 2023. Only one of those players (Chris Jones) played any significant measure of snaps for the team in 2022.

Again, if you’re not familiar with top-30 visits, these are the opportunities that NFL teams have to bring draft prospects into team facilities for a variety of reasons. This ranges from medical evaluation to culture fit to simply getting to know a player better. In some cases, it’s as much selling a player on your team and what they’re about as it is learning about the player. Teams are only permitted 30 of these visits (hence the top 30 visit moniker). Every team uses them differently, but in the past the Chiefs have used them on anything from top draft choices to undrafted free agents.

Vikings 2023 7 round mock draft 6.0: Versatility reigns supreme

In the latest seven-round mock draft, @TheRealForno has the Vikings trading back, getting more picks and drafting versatile players

The Minnesota Vikings have a lot of different ways they can go in the NFL draft. There will be some discussion on what needs are most important but the Vikings can address most of them through both free agency and the NFL draft.

I have now done five mock drafts for the Vikings this offseason and they all have taken a slightly different turn each time. This one has the Vikings trading back and focusing on the defense.
