Yankees fans loved Brian Cashman’s blunt response to turning down Juan Soto’s demand for a luxury suite

The Yankees GM had no regrets.

Juan Soto’s decision to sign with the Mets for a record-shattering deal wasn’t much of a surprise within baseball circles. The number was always going to be astronomical, and the Mets had deep pockets to make it happen.

What was surprising, though, was how the Yankees’ bid may have collapsed over refusal to give Soto a free luxury suite at Yankee Stadium.

According to the New York Post, Soto wanted the Yankees to provide his family with a suite for the duration of the contract. The Yankees — having already made Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge pay for their own suites in the past — didn’t want to ignore precedent and give Soto a multimillion-dollar perk. Instead, they offered Soto that suite at a discounted rate.

Mets owner Steve Cohen, on the other hand, was more than willing to give Soto a suite at Citi Field and got the deal done. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was asked about the suite saga, and he essentially said that a player making that much should be OK paying for his own suite.

Via MLB.com:

“Some high-end players that make a lot of money for us, if they want suites, they buy them.”

Cashman also added that he had no regrets about how the Yankees handled their negotiations. And Yankees fans loved how Cashman implied that Soto could have afforded his own suite because, well, look at that contract.

Giancarlo Stanton’s agent responded to Brian Cashman’s remarks by urging players to avoid the Yankees

The Yankees are a chaotic mess and free agency hasn’t even started yet.

Few MLB teams committed as many errors as the New York Yankees in 2023. General manager Brian Cashman has now added to that unfortunate tally of self-inflicted blemishes.

Last week, Cashman talked about the health of designated hitter/outfielder Giancarlo Stanton in an interview with the New York Daily News. While saying that yes, Stanton remained important to the Yankees’ plans, he also made cutting remarks about his player being “injury-prone.” (Note: Stanton has missed at least 50 games in each of the last two seasons.)

Cashman would later clarify these remarks. Still, even while (kind of?) complimenting Stanton’s hitting talents, Cashman seemingly couldn’t help but continue to fan the flames of comments that almost certainly wouldn’t sit well.

More from the New York Daily News:

“We try to limit the time he’s [Stanton] down,” Cashman said. “But I’m not gonna tell you he’s gonna play every game next year because he’s not. He’s going to wind up getting hurt again more likely than not because it seems to be part of his game. But I know that when he’s right and healthy — other than this past year — the guy’s a great hitter and has been for a long time.”

I don’t know what Cashman was thinking because there’s virtually zero chance any rational-minded human being wouldn’t take exception to being critiqued like that in a public setting. Naturally, after catching wind of Cashman’s criticism, Stanton’s agent, Joel Wolfe, responded with a passive-aggressive statement that essentially warned pending MLB free agents from signing with the Bronx Bombers. This is awful news for a team that figured to be a major player in this year’s MLB free-agent period.

Oh, what’s that? Stanton’s agent also represents phenom Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto? Uh-oh.

Well, that’s just about the worst possible outcome for Cashman, isn’t it?

Not only did his disappointing Yankees miss last year’s postseason, he might now have to backpedal his comments about Stanton’s health in order to keep New York’s clubhouse together for a hopeful big rebound in 2024. It’s a good thing the New York media is famously kind and fair and won’t pounce the moment Cashman’s team inevitably falls short of its goals and expectations.

Oh, right. Bravo to Cashman. He has probably brought the Yankees’ coming firestorm upon himself.

Yankees fans crushed GM Brian Cashman after he called the season an unexpected ‘disaster’

Everyone saw this coming except for Brian Cashman.

The New York Yankees went into the 2023 season with legitimate World Series aspirations. This was a ball club that had won 99 games in 2022, re-signed AL MVP Aaron Judge to a monster deal and boasted MLB’s second-largest payroll. At least that was how the Yankees front office saw it.

Fast forward to now, and we’re nearing August with the Yankees at the bottom of the AL East standings, losers of nine straight and essentially out of the wild-card race. You can’t blame Yankees fans for wanting to see consequences at the top as longtime general manager Brian Cashman put together this roster.

Well, they’re not going to enjoy hearing what Cashman had to say on Wednesday.

Cashman spoke to the media ahead of the Yankees’ game against the Nationals, and the overall message was that he’s been shocked to see this season play out as it has, calling it a “disaster.”

That’s where the lack of accountability angered Yankees fans. Cashman essentially described the dreadful season as a fluke that happened at no fault of his own, adding that the roster he constructed looked like a playoff team in spring training.

Job performances — particularly for front offices — aren’t judged in spring training. He has to know that. No wonder Yankees fans weren’t pleased with Cashman’s comments.

Don’t listen to Brian Cashman, who wants us to feel pity for the poor Yankees

The Yankees want sympathy. Don’t listen to them!

I’m not one to talk about signs of the Apocalypse, but has anyone checked if Hell has frozen over yet? What about whether the earth’s waters have risen above the mountains? I mean, I know we can see those beautiful natural works of art from a distance, and they seem okay and still majestic, but are we sure the oceans haven’t eclipsed them?

I only ask these pressing questions because it looks like the Yankees are asking for sympathy. Yes, the New York Yankees, once famous for buying every good player seemingly every year in free agency en route to World Series after World Series and laughing about it, are having a rough go of it lately. And they want you to know it’s been hard.

Excuse me?

Brian Cashman, your table is ready. Let’s hear your grievances, buddy. Oh, you want to talk about the 2017 ALCS for some reason? Why not!

From The Athletic:

“The only thing that stopped us was something so illegal and horrific. So I get offended when we start hearing we haven’t been to the World Series since ’09.”

Those are some of Cashman’s thoughts on criticisms of an ongoing Yankees championship drought. The 2010s were only the second decade (behind the 80s) in the storied franchise’s existence where they didn’t win a title. And Cashman thinks his beloved “Bronx Bombers” were robbed by the cheating Astros … in a conference championship series.

Brian, please continue. I would say you have bigger problems to worry about, but I need to hear more before making a reasonable ruling that won’t upset Yankees, Lakers, and Duke Nation. It’s only fair.

More via The Athletic:

“Because I’m like, ‘Well, I think we actually did it the right way. The only thing that derailed us was a cheating circumstance that threw us off.'”

Okay. Look. I’m not about to downplay what the Astros did, which I don’t think I must elaborate upon. But does Cashman really want us to feel bad for the Yankees? The Yankees???

Sure, the Yankees have never necessarily broken the rules with their exorbitant spending that blows everyone out of the water. And yeah, nothing says it’s illegal for you to be self-righteous about having the largest coin purse, among other things. Both tenets are frowned upon by baseball fans (rightfully), but they’re not against the rules.

But if there were a team I would feel pity for in feeling the direct brunt of a cheating scandal; it would certainly not be a squad with 27 championships. Not the Yankees. Not the evil Empire of American professional sports. They might as well have John Williams’ classic deep organ following them around.

Not to mention that it’s worth noting Tipico Sportsbook has the Yankees at +1200 with the fifth-best odds to win the 2022 World Series. That’s pretty good! I think they’re okay!

Besides, Brian, can you expand upon what happened in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019?

Let me guess. Someone was cheating there, too, and that’s what prevented you from capturing glorious No. 28?

Let’s hear it. We’re all ears, good sir. What’s the next excuse?

WATCH: Yankees GM Cashman adds talks with Bumgarner’s agency to offseason to-do list

It is already on the table that New York wants to go after Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg, who both come off outstanding runs in the 2019 World Series.

The Yankees have plans to pursue big-name pitching during the off-season. It is already on the table that New York wants to go after Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg, who both come off outstanding runs in the 2019 World Series.

Now, General Manager Brian Cashman is adding former Giants ace Madison Bumgarner to his wish list.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday that Cashman confirmed the 30-year-old is a guy the Yankees will try to sign during free agency.

“I will definitely talk to Bumgarner’s agency,” the Yankees general manager said. “I haven’t. But I will. He’s been a tremendous player for a long time.

“We’re going to look at everybody that’s out there, obviously. Starting pitching is important, and he’s been one of the game’s better starting pitchers for a long time. So we’ll certainly have a conversation.”
